LEICHVILLE-Gun-bower coach MattHawken has praisedthe character of
his side after the Bombersinflicted Huntlys first loss ofHeathcote District FootballLeagues season, despite acrippling injury toll.
Te Bombers got awayto a strong start against theHawks at Leitchville to laythe foundation for their
16.11 (107) to 10.13 (73)victory on Saturday.
Te win was the fourth ina row for the Bombers, butit came at a price as omGerman (quad), Jason DalSanto (knee), Joel Helman(broken collarbone) and WillBrereton (hamstring) wereall injured.
Were happy with theresult, but it was a brutalcontest and with 10 minutesto go until half-time wewere down to no bench,Hawken said.
o get over Huntly on a
big ground with the situationwe were in, I was ecstatic. We worked really hard
early to build a lead andwere able to hang in duringthe second half.
In terms of wins, its asgood as Ive been involvedin given we were playing anopposition that was flyingand to have lost four blokesby half-time it was aphenomenal effort.
Last years HDFL RisingStar Adam Decicco (twogoals), ruckman-forwardCameron Ross (four goals)and the in-form Jackson Mc-
Ewan were the best for theBombers, who now have a21-day break until their nextgame against Heathcote.
Having been strongstarters this season theyhad outscored their opposi-tion 144-23 in their previousthree first terms the Hawkswere forced to play catch-up
footy after trailing by 24points at quarter-time and
then 31 at half-time.Chris Gleeson (four)
and Harry Whittle (three)combined for seven of theHawks 10 goals.
Mount Pleasant ralliedfrom a slow start to overhaulHeathcote by three points atPigeon Park the first matchthis season decided by asingle-figure margin.
Coming off two hidings, the Blues won 11.13 (79)to 11.10 (76), with thematch-winning goal kickedby yler McNamara fromthe boundary.
Earlier, the Blues hadbeen slow out of the blockswhen they trailed 5.0 to 1.3at quarter-time.
We slow to get going, butI was really pleased withthe way the boys were ableto grind it out, Blues coachDerrick Filo said.
It was one of those gameswhere we won ugly, butyoure happy to get the fourpoints and move on.
We lost two playersearly, so there wasnt a lot ofrotations for the last two anda half quarters.
Te Blues lost midfielder
Paul Clemente (calf) andveteran defender ChrisBlack (corkie).
Not only did the winimprove the Blues to 3-2,but they retained the Peterand Cliff White MemorialShield in what was the 20thinstallment.
Both clubs are very pas-
sionate about the shield. Itsa great day for both clubs, soits good to be able to win itagain, Filo said.
Nathan Byrne and NickGrigg kicked three goals
apiece for the Blues, whosebest two were midfieldersAdam Richardson andJason Shaw.
Te Saints had goodplayers in Mitch McLean,Marc Millard and Jake Con-don. Rikki Stephens kickedthree goals.
Elmore has won two ina row for the first time since2012, backing up its victoryover LBU last week with a25-point triumph over WhiteHills at home.
Te Bloods led by onepoint at three quarter-time,but finished the stronger of
the two sides to pull awayfor a 14.15 (99) to 11.8 (74)victory, ending a string ofseven-straight losses againstthe Demons.
Elmore coach AlexGleeson says the reason forthe strong finish was simple conversion.
Te Bloods kicked 9.13
in the first three quarters, before finishing with 5.2 inthe last.
Te boys responded wellin the last quarter, but youlook at the scoring shotswe had 29 to 19 and onlywon by four goals, so weneed to keep working on ourscoreboard pressure being alot better than it has been,Gleeson said.
Phil Lobb, James Harneyand Danny Brewster allkicked three goals forthe Bloods.
It was an emotional dayfor White Hills following thedeath from cancer on Fridayof Eddie Scarff, who only afortnight ago was officiallyrecognised as a club legend.
Its a sad day for the cluband theres quite a few ofour players who have had alot to do with Eddie over the
years, Demons coach CarlHardingham said.
We wanted to make surewe went out and played withheart today, which we didand the effort was there, butunfortunately, we couldntcome away with the win.
Jake Ward and SamFrawley kicked three goalseach for the Demons.
North Bendigos SamBarnes booted the first sen-ior double figure bag of goalsof the season across the AFLCentral Victoria region with
his haul of 11 against Lock-ington-Bamawm United.

Barness bag of 11 includ-ed five in the final term, while team-mate Brady
Herdman snagged six beforesitting out the final quarter.
In the second half we gotback to the style of footy wewere playing last year, whichwas pleasing. Te big thing Ispoke about before the gamewas effort and communi-cation that wasnt there lastweek (loss to Colbinabbin),Bennett said.
Brett Strange was out-standing in the ruck for theBulldogs in constantly givinghis midfielders first use ofthe ball.
