The Academy’s Focus• The Berwick College Sports Academy is aimed at providing an
integrated academic pathway driven by young students sporting aspirations.
• This elite program allows young student athletes to enhance and develop their sporting talent while concurrently receiving their secondary education.
• It is crucial to the Academy that students’ academic pursuits are of the highest priority and that each student’s interest and aspiration in sport assists them in achieving high results both academically and athletically.
The Academy is committed to:
• Providing strong pastoral care for all students
• Constant monitoring of academic performance and achievements
• Providing a unique high quality specialised sports program,
allowing students to reach their full potential in their selected sport.
• Creating skills within the Academy’s students to provide unique
opportunities aimed at future employment.
Curriculum:
In 2018 and ahead the basketball program will give students the opportunity to follow their passion whilst undertaking a heavily monitored and well rounded academic program. For Year 7 and 8 students training sessions will occur during their weekly Sport Education allotted time and some extra sessions on Sports Science and Fundamental Skills during allocated Art Domain time for Year 7’s or an elective for year 8’s. The students will still be involved in their general Physical Education classes.

Sports Academy Structure

All year elective (limited places, try outs maybe required)
The Year 9 program will have four weekly periods, whilst for year 10 it is increased to 5, with 1 being designated to theory and preparation for year 11. The remaining 4 periods will have 2 periods dedicated to training and learning the structures the students will apply at our various tournaments. The other two periods will vary between training sessions, individual focused programs and fitness development These will include:
• Game tactics• Nutrition• Strength and conditioning• Game analysis• Fitness Techniques and training programs
Year 9 and 10 program
Year 11:Students will complete Units 1 and 2 of the VCE Physical Education course. Practical sessions will focus on continuing to build their basketball knowledge and skills. Students will continue to be involved in all tournaments as in previous years of the academy.
Year 12:Students will complete Units 3 and 4 of the VCE Physical Education course.There will be no interruptions to students with basketball sessions, the course will run as a stand alone Year 12 Physical Education unit. Students will still have the opportunity to participate in all tournaments throughout the year.Students are currently participating in Lunchtime Training sessions to minimise the impact on their schooling.

CONSEQUENCES Students who fail to abide by the code of ethics may be required to appear before a panel of their peers and teachers, made up from Senior Leadership Students, Student Learning Leader and Academy teachers. The panel will review cases in which students are not:
Achieving expected academic outcomes Abiding by the Berwick Basics and the Student Code of Expectations Adhering to the Sports Academy Expectations
Possible consequences include detention, suspension or even removal from the program. 1. Removal from classes which issues are arising in and contact made to the parents/guardians outlining the issues by the Student Learning Leader (SSL.)2. Continued disruption will result in a formal meeting between SSL, Academy staff and students family.3. An initial formal meeting with the student’s continuation in the program being discussed.

Basketball Academy : $600 (per annum)
This includes a Berwick College uniform, all tournament fees, transport costs, equipment and the expert coaching.We have been able to keep our costing to a minimum as our program is predominantly run by qualified teachers with basketball expertise.

The Basketball Academy began in 2014 with approximately 75 students and has now grown in 2018 to approximately 250 students. The success of the program has been its growth and retention of students.
