Introduction to Wigging

Greetings everyone!

This is my favorite cartoon ... and explains the *FUN* of wigging perfectly! Here are some extra hints to keep in mind before using these files.

1. This pdf compiles my experience in wigging through the last 10 or more years. Ihave played around with doing the SAME THING .... Many different ways. Therefore ...you may find a pdf on doing High Hair - two completely different ways. Rather then get-ting confused ... think of this as a way of covering your bet. Meaning ... if one of my tech-niques to achieve the end result doesn’t work for you ... perhaps the other will.

Also ... as my work has evolved ... so have my techniques. Bottom line ... read throughthe pdfs ... practice your wigging ... and retain what works for you!

2. Feel free to print out the pdfs and use for your personal use as much as you wish. That is the beauty about individual pdfs ... you can simply read the page - or print out asyour need occurs.

3. NEVER wig when you are STRESSED! Hair will just end up flying all over you — andpretty soon - so will the doll <G> hahaha. If you like WINE ... honestly have a glass whilewigging!

4. DON’T expect your hair to turn out EXACTLY like the photo (either in your head ... oron the pdf). Miniature Hair is JUST like your REAL hair. There are good hair days andBAD hair days! WORK with how the hair is flowing and your results will be MUCH better!

5. HAVE the right tools! Basically if you have several small travel size misters filled withdistilled water ... one mister with a drop of conditioner to take those frizzies .... anotherwith a few drops of fabric stiffener for setting your hair and lastly one ... just to use toclean off your hands or *style*. Then a few corsage pins and knitting needles for curls.Lastly a pleater.

Alright ... lets start wigging! DANA

Basic Wigging Techniques

1. Select doll body. (If you would like the easiest way to make a part, simply tell your doll body re-tailer to cut a center slit (or side) into porcelain during greenware stage. This forms a natural looking

part.

2. Create a hairline. I look into the mirror, and see how my hair line goes from ear to ear. Then I put amatching line of glue around the doll’s head from ear to ear.

Next, take your finger and smear the glue upwards.

3. Separate hair fiber from main hunk of hair. You need a section about 3" long, and about 1" wide.Make sure this section is very thin. Separate strands with your finger nail if necessary to make eventhickness.

Lay this over head from neck to nose, patting gently to adhere to glue.

Then put a thin line of glue from ear top to ear top. Lay a piece of hair over this. You are effectivelymaking a cross. Now hold the whole thing down gently, and let dry.

You can pick with corsage pin if desired to comb.

4. Arrange hair.

Lift sides and gently twist to back of head. Wrap a thread around as kind of a mini rubber band.

Now design as desired in the following photo samples. These are meant to be inspirational not amust do! Half the fun is to create on your own.

Men’s Hair

Men’s hair can be easily achieved by cutting apart sausage curls, and pullingthem at both ends gently. Now glue to your doll’s basic hair line. I even use this forside burns.

For wavy santa beards, simply use a pleater (see page 5)

Horizontal Part

There are 3 basic ways to make a part in a dolls hairline:

1. Cut part gap into the head of doll during greenware stage - then fire as usual.2. Use a pie shape piece of fimo - blend onto head top, groove part and bake.3. Use a horizontal part. This is very effective and easy as shown below.

Glue a prepared strip of viscose across the top of the head

When the glue is dry, fold the section back on itself and comb the two partstogether.

Repeat for the other side of the head making sure the part is well definedand the second section butts right up against the first section. For more inforead the Alexa pages (12 and 13).

Basic Pulled Back Sides

1. Create a basic hairline.

2. After pulling up sides and attaching to top and/or back, tie with thread to secure.

I use pins to hold my twists and sections of hair in place before permanently attaching.

I also add a drop of glue underneath twists to secure.

Now tie a pretty bow, add fat sausage curls to the back, and cut a couple shorter for that nice thick bang lookin front.

Bangs

The easiest way to make nice big poofy bangs is simply to make a sausage curl on say a (US) size 5 or largerknitting needle.

When completely cool, and dry - cut curl in half HORIZONTALLY.

Then, put a line of glue across forehead, and with a tweezers, gently pick up this half of the curl and attach.

Curls

There are three main types of curls:

1. Spit Curls2. Tendrils3. Sausage Curls

Each is made the same. The only variance is how much fiber you put on your curling rod(knitting needle). The more fiber, the bigger the curl. Therefore, a spit curl would useroughly 1/3 of the fiber a sausage curl would use.

How to wrap a curl:

1. Separate a small bunch of hair. THIN, THIN section of hair. Take your plant mister (I al-ways put a small drop of Downy in for static control) and mist your strand.

Smooth gently with fingers.

Next take your curling rod, and wrap the hair around it, similar to wrapping florist tapearound the stem of artificial flowers. If you don’t know this technique, go to your local floristshop, and theywill be happy to show you.

Page 7: BASIC WIGGING FOR BEGINNERS - Dana of Miniature Art CD/basicwigging.pdfDANA. 4 Basic Wigging Techniques 1. Select doll body. (I f you would like the easiest way to make a part, simply

7

2. Take several of these rods when full with hair, turn on your blow dryer and dry them. Af-ter they are set, gently pull off the rod - and enjoy instant curls!!!

One variation is to make REALLY fat curls, cut in really small pieces and pick slightly with a corsage pin topuff them up.

Use these for ‘puffy bangs’ or to cover the whole head with for a modern look.

Towering Curls

Take a lady doll with a groove cut in for a part.

Make her hair line, and gently press hair into groove.

Do a basic upsweep in previous directions..

Then take your larger needle, make LOTS of sausage curls, glue around head and back of neck as shown.Add feathers on top and decoration as desired.

If you can’t achieve the height, sculpt a cone shaped piece of fimo.

Bake.

Glue on head (**HINT** - sculpt fimo piece from a matching color).

Next wind, wrap curls on top of this.

Use size 00 pointed end needles for tendrils and ‘spit’ curls, size 3 and above for sausage and man curls.

**TIP**

Take a tightly curled curl ... gently pull the very end with tweezers and you willhave a very nice tendril to glue on to your doll’s head.

The key to curls is to CUT out the part you want from main section. This way you don’taccidently pull away the curl.

More advanced curl hints:

Once you are proficient at making basic curls that are made and THEN glued on the doll ....try using a *3rd* hand to hold your doll and roll curls DIRECTLY on to the doll’s head.

Pleating Hair

There are 3 sizes of pleaters that I use ...1/4" for ethnic andchildren’s hair, ½" for almost everything else and 1" for sexyVeronica Lake hair.

To pleat hair, simply take conditioned viscose, lay on top of the pleater, push the hair intothe grooves, blow dry (with the diffuser on the end to prevent hair from blowing out) and letdry.

Style as desired.

To create Hillary’s blonde, sexy look simply pleat two sections of viscose and glue on asshown.

Then take a corsage pin and gently comb out extra hair.

Lastly mist a light layer of setting solution on hair and pat down to get rid of excess frizzies.

Mildred (red hair) is done the same way, except her hair is cropped short with a scissors.Mildred was sculpted by Nancy Cronin and dressed by DANA.

Pleated bangs can also be effective:

Wigging EVEBridal tutorial by DANA

Step 1. Take your 1" pleater and pleat a section of viscose.

Take hair out while still damp and *PUSH* backwards to flatten/soften curls as shown in photo #2.

Step 2 . Glue a realistic hairline on doll’s head.Step 3. Lay strip of pleated hair from ear to ear as shown in photo.

Carefully make edges meet in the back.

Use a corsage pin to carefully *comb* hair into place as shown in photos above. I actually mistedthe wave slightly, and put a more defined groove into hair and let it air dry to soften.

(This was a bonus tutorial for those of you that purchased EVE material kits. If you have any otherquestions - please email me at [email protected])

BUNS

There are two easy way to make buns. The one shown to the right - is simply a hank ofviscose that you have tied in knots repeating until you have tied 3 or 4 knots on top of eachother and then pulled the ends tight.

Cut off end, tuck to inside and glue bun on the head of hair.

ADDITIONAL HINTS

Leave the tail end long, then plait or twist and glue to the doll’s head.

Tie your knots into a bun then lightly mist with your mister.

THEN while still damp, carefully SQUISH the bun into the table top to create a *flatter*looking bun.

This is the difference between the blonde bun and the red head.

If you are making a period (medieval) style hair ... why not take your flattened bun and aneedle and gold thread, and carefully weave in and out of the curl folds with pearls for areally really pretty and easy vintage look?

This is all achieved with an (added) on bun. To create a bun from your basic wiggingcross ... simply turn to the next page.

MORE ABOUT BUNS

To create this look, simply do your basic Wigging cross, pull back sections of hair, and twist and twist (also knownas SNAKEY ROPES) then glue/pin into place as desired.

NOW the fun starts!

Are you ready to wig? And hahahah not WIGG OUT? To finish these basic techniques andbefore you start to hair Alexa, take a moment and study her position, face, and pose thatyou ended up with.

Now is the time to figure out HOW you are going to showcase her strong points … and per-haps hide the ones you don’t like as well! Did she drape better on top then bottom? Didyou accidently spill some glue on part of the dress?

I initially had Alexa with a bit more *head on* view ... but her eyes were so pretty (that Itilted the doll a bit to showcase that pretty lace top and embroidered robe ... and still haveenough face to do the drastic but steamy hair covering half her face look).

Wigging Alexa

Carefully follow the instructions on the next page.

Wigging Alexa

1. Take conditioned piece of viscose and place on 1" pleater.

Blow dry and gently roll out of pleater.

2. Glue half of hairline, and place half of pleated hair on.

Let dry.

3. Now insert plastic baggie on top of hair (from Step #2) .... and put a line of glue on thepart, and put other half of pleated hair on top of glue/baggie.

Let dry.

4. Flip back top layer of pleated hair, spread carefully around rest of head with corsage pinand gently style into place.

This is literally all I did to achieve the top wigging photo. If necessary, take a knitting needle, and gently curlthe bottom of hair upward to give a to give a bit more curl.
