LearningOutcomesStudentswillbecomeabletowritesimplemusicinfourpartsinconcordancewiththetraditionalrulesofharmony,voice-leadingandcounterpoint.Theywillalsobecomeconversantwiththefollowingmusicalelements:7thchords,modes,non-harmonictonesandanintroductiontomodulation.Studentswillcontinuetodevelopmusicianshipskillsofeartrainingandsightsinging,andwillbereadytocontinueontoAdvancedTheoryI.InstructionalMethods:Thiscoursewillinvolvelectureandclassdiscussion,in-classproblem-solvingexercises,ear-trainingandsightsingingexercisesinandoutsideofclass,groupdiscussionsandproblem-solving,individualcomputermusicwritingassignments,andtextbookreadingassignmentswithhomework.GradingEachquizandexamwillbeworthanumberofpoints.Thefinalexamwillbeworthtwiceasmuchasaregularexam.Thetotalpointsearnedthroughoutthesemesterwillbecomputedtodeterminethefinalgrade.Writtentheorygradeswillbeworth60%ofthesemestergrade,ear-training15%,andsightsinging15%. Gradingscale: 90-100% A 80-89% B 70-79% C 60-69% D Below60% FHomeworkAssignmentsStudentswillbegivenregularassignmentsoutofthetext,avarietyoflisteningandsightsingingassignments,andcomputerlabworkwiththecomputerear-trainingprogram.Assignmentsaredueatthebeginningofclassontheduedateandwillbeworthanumberofpoints.Lateworkwillnotbeaccepted.QuizzesandTestsMostquizzes,andallunitandmidtermexams,willbeannouncedaheadoftime;smallquizzesmaybeunannounced.Attendanceateveryclasssessionistheonlywaytoavoidmissingunannouncedquizzes.StudentsscoringaDorFonaquizortest(otherthanthefinal)mayretakeitwithinoneweektoimprovetheirgrade,butcanonlyincreasethatgradeuptoaC.
