A closer look at ourrespondents…

Rural dwellingPastoralist community.Most are married as young as 12 years oldAll respondents are ChristiansThey guard their customs and traditions jealouslyMen typically speak for women and make decisions

in the family/community. Most of them do not access medication from health

centers they only believe in their own traditional herbs.

CARE AND SUPPORT FOR PLHIVHIV testing is done in the hospital which is far from

the villageOne group has heard about ARVs and know that it

prevents the virus from developingAnother group do not believe there is treatment for

HIVNo HIV program in the church or communityNo HIV services provided in the communityNo places in their community that provide care for

PLHIVNo support groupsOnly hold prayers , one group said: “we leave them to

God”

BASIC KNOWLEDGE & INFORMATION ON HIVLittle knowledge on HIV. There is a common belief that the community

ATTITUDESOne group strongly believe that PLHIV should

not hold positions in church or in the community. The other group is accommodative.

They generally don’t believe that they can contract HIV

CONCLUSIONThey have little knowledge about HIV and AIDS

and need more and accurate information.Most of them are illiterate and cannot read HIV

information.They believe in their cultural norms, some of

which are riskyDue to sensitivity of the topic and nature of the

group there may be need to combine FGD with individual interviews or self administered questionnaires. Most were too shy to speak openly.

They welcome GSP “come every week” they said.
