HEAD COACHMachli Joseph
The women’s basketball program has seen
unprecedented success since Machli Joseph was first named head coach on May 12, 2004.
During his eight seasons on the sidelines, the former Division I basketball player has amassed a record of 152-52 (.745). The Bearcats have won six CUNYAC Tournament Championships (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012), and earned automatic berths each time to the NCAA Tournament. During their 2006 & 2009 NCAA appearances, the team advanced to the second round before falling to a nationally-ranked opponent.
Joseph’s leadership has also produced three CUNYAC MVPs (Chiresse Paradise, Monique Salmon, Jessica Duleba), and a large number of players with regional all-star honors with D3Hoops.com, ECAC and other basketball publications.
One of the major reasons for his coaching success has been his ability to recruit both locally and nationally with players on his roster from as far as California, Nevada, Utah, Illinois, Michigan, and Virginia.
In his rookie season (2004-05), Joseph coached the Bearcats to a (then) team record 21 wins,
their first-ever post-season berth (ECAC), and the CUNYAC North Division Regular Season Championship.
His first season also included a win against a #1-ranked opponent (NYU), a Baruch athletic program and CUNY Athletic Conference first, and a pair of Tournament Championships with the Baruch Invitational and Manhattanville’s Castle Classic Tournament.
In his second season (2005-06), he led the Bearcats again to a (then) team record 23 wins, the CUNYAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship, and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The success did not stop there as the Bearcats defeated Mount Saint Mary (NY) for the conference’s first-ever win in the NCAA Tournament, and for his efforts, he was named the Coach of the Year by both the CUNY Athletic Conference and the Met Basketball Writers Association’s/National Invitation Tournament.
Overall, the team has won at least 19 games and played in a post-season tournament every season with Joseph as head coach.
“As a coach, I try to always remind myself of my duties: to love, teach, support & help them become successful. Basketball is just a vehicle.”
