The weekly newsletter of St Bartholomew’s School. POSITIVITREE SEAT INSTALLED Student mental health is a topic previously surrounded by stigma but recently it has become more of a priority in schools. This change is extremely positive and we should all be doing our best to support this. At St. Bart’s we raised the profile of this topic during Mental Health Awareness week in May and have some ongoing projects to contribute towards student mental health. An example of this is our Positivitree, a tree in the Nature Reserve at school, surrounded by a bench where students can come to sit when talking through concerns with staff. The bench is on the patio that was laid by students in the Sixth Form earlier this year. Additionally, students in the Sixth Form can use this place for quiet reflection and peaceful meditation, or simply somewhere you can go to be removed from the bustle of school life. Surrounding yourself with nature is proven to be calming and to positively affect your state of mind so we feel this is the perfect spot for Sixth Form students to retreat to when they feel overwhelmed. During the current exam season, with exams becoming more pressurised than ever, we hope the space will prove particularly useful for students who need a break from this exam stress. Ciara Beal, 2019/20 Head Girl PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION MEETING On 19 June at 7pm the Parents’ Association will vote on how to spend the money raised during the year. All parents are welcome to take part in this meeting in the new Wormestall Meeting Room. This is one of most joyful meetings of the PA calendar where we choose which projects to allocate money to from the bids put forward by Houses, faculty heads, subject teachers and extra curricular organisers. We’d love to see you there. Email [email protected] with any queries. YEAR 7 VOCABLICS QUIZ Y7 have successfully completed their second Vocablics quiz with the majority of tutor groups increasing their scores. Like Manchester City, 7C2 retained their title as Vocablics champions and some 42 students across the year group achieved full marks, which is very impressive. The progress awards went to Jessica Wadge-Berrospi in 7P1 and Thomas McNeil Aitken in 7P3. A new set of words will be released after half-term. POSITIVITREE SEAT INSTALLED Student mental health is a topic previously surrounded by stigma but recently it has become more of a priority in schools. PE Road to Wimbledon This year’s annual St Bart's tennis singles tournament, organised in conjunction with the LTA, saw a record 54 students involved, the most successful to date! All players had a minimum of 3 matches to play, all trying to qualify for the Berkshire County finals.

Due to the large number of students involved the final rounds are still to be played and will take place this week. The winners will be announced shortly. Congratulations to all involved; they played in great spirit and demonstrated the growing strength of tennis at school. Year 7 Football Season Report The St Bart’s Year 7 football team capped off a tremendous season with a resounding win in the West Berkshire Final just before half term, beating John O’Gaunt 8-0 in an excellent all round team display, including four goals for George Alsten. This win built on the success the team have had in the county cup this year, beating The Embrook School, 10-0, Desborough College, 6-0, Edgbarrow School, 2-0 and Furze Platt Senior School, 2-1 on their march to the final. The final was played in front of a large crowd at Bracknell Town FC against Reading Blue Coat School. In a game that was remarked on by the officials as the best school final they have seen in terms of excitement and quality, the boys played some superb football, but unfortunately finally succumbed to a bombardment of long throws in extra time, going down to a header in the last minute before penalties. This should take nothing away from an excellent performance, as on another day this was a game that could have easily gone the other way. We look forward to seeing the team progress and hopefully experience even more success in future years.

Tuesday Morning Boxercise Class Continues 8am – 8.20am All years boys and girls are warmly invited to attend this inspirational Tuesday morning club in the Sportshall which is run by an external coach. Come and have a go!

BEE SWARM On the last day before half term, a swarm of bees was spotted on a small tree near the entrance to the School. The area was cordoned

off and a local bee keeper arrived to remove the bees. However by the time they were all suited up with an agreed plan of action the bees thought otherwise and swarmed off in the direction of City Playground!

HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED We are expecting 3 Sixth Formers (all boys) from our German partner school to join us for the school year 2019-
