Position Description The overall role of the Leader, Production Business Management is to provide leadership for the development and delivery of AEDE and Extension Programs that provide managers of agricultural production businesses with tools, information, and analysis to manage their firms. The Leader, Production Business Management works collaboratively with AEDE Faculty and Program Staff as well as Extension Educators and Specialists to create, manage, support, market, and deliver quality programs. This position reports to the Department Chair with input from Extension Assistant Director, Agriculture and Natural Resources. Economic Outlook for Equipment Dealers Top Issues in Agriculture Trying to Answer the Cash Rent Question - What is Equitable and Sustainable? Enterprise Budgeting and Breakeven Costs Extension Education Extension Program: Rural Appraiser and Professional Farm Manager Education: I serve as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Ohio Chapter of the American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers. The organization is made up of rural appraisers, professional farm managers, attorneys and other agricultural professionals. In this role I organize and coordinate the educational offerings and continuing education requirements for the real estate and appraisal licensure. I also teach and provide educational materials in the areas of land value, managing cash rental arrangements and cost control at each of the educational offerings. The 2012 Annual Meeting evaluation showed all participants rated the educational program as Good or Excellent. Comment from 2012 attendee, “Most informative CE (Continuing Education) available as a rural appraiser and the relationships with fellow appraisers & managers are priceless.” Agricultural Lender Education: I co-coordinate agricultural lender educational seminars each year. In this role I serve as the co-coordinator of these educational offerings and currently organize, coordinate and teach portions of three agricultural lender workshops each year. Consultations with agricultural lenders are an important part of selecting educational objectives for these educational offerings. Evaluations showed that lenders improved their knowledge levels by 30% (Examining Potential Profitability for 2013) to as high as 73% (New Dairy Technologies) across nine topics. Agricultural Policy and Outlook Education: I serve as a teacher and co-facilitator as a part of Extension Policy and Outlook meetings targeting agricultural producers and professionals. My educational objectives are improving participant understanding of land value economics, cash rental economics and arrangements and crop cost economics. Two meetings evaluated showed that 100% and 98% of participants “agreed” or “strongly agreed” that I “helped them understand these issues” taught. Ohio Ag Manager Team: As a part of the Ohio Ag Manager team I participate in monthly conference calls to generate ideas for the monthly Ohio Ag Manager online newsletter. This Ohio State University Extension newsletter focuses on educating clientele in the area of farm management. I author several article a year for this newsletter. In 2012 the Ohio Ag Manager Website had 706,650 visits and 2.1 million page views. Ohio Tax Management Education: I serve as a part of a team planning and conducting the Ohio Income Tax Schools and the Ag Issues Tax Schools for income tax preparers in Ohio. I teach Income Tax Issues for Agriculture and Natural Resources and Ethics to Income Tax Preparers. I also prepare curriculum and teach material on Timber Tax Management as a part of Timber Management Workshop for Ohio landowners. On a 5 point Likert scale, OSU Income Tax School Participants stated that they had a knowledge gain on average of 0.57. Applied Research: Ohio Enterprise Budgets In conjunction with other Extension professionals and industry sources I develop enterprise budgets for targeted commodities important to Ohio producers. These budgets are used as stand-alone educational pieces and used for developing educational programming. The AEDE Enterprise Budget website had 866 “Pageviews” January 1 -30, 2012. Ohio Cropland Values and Cash Rental Rates Research: I conduct research on land values and cash rental rates through surveying agricultural professionals, rural appraisers and farm managers in Ohio. Data is collected by surveying agricultural lenders, farm managers and rural appraisers through

mailed and online surveys. Data is collected, analyzed and summarized annually in the OSU Extension Factsheet "Ohio Cropland Values and Cash Rents 20XX-20XX". Ohio Farm Custom Rates Survey Research and Summary: Together with Extension Educators I conduct survey research of custom farming providers and clientele on farm custom rates, labor rates, building/land/machinery rental rates, and other farm related practices. Research is summarized annually in an Extension Factsheet. "Ohio Farm Custom Rates 20XX". Collection and Dissemination of Input Price Data Collection of input price (fertilizer and fuel) time series data from Green Markets (Industry Newsletter) and Ohio agricultural retailers for use in research, publications and presentations. Fertilizer Pricing Research and Returns to Storage for Fertilizer Research Volatility in fertilizer markets has led to cost uncertainty in crop production for Ohio farmers. Using data series collected from Ohio retailers and Green Markets (industry newsletter) data, storage alternatives have been analyzed for returns to fertilizer storage for use in presentations and articles. Wages and Benefits for Farm Employees The “Wages and Benefits For Farm Employees” study is conducted and summarized in an OSU Extension Factsheet.
