Introduction to Business

Course DescriptionIntroduction to Business is the first course in the business curriculum providing an overview of the role that business fulfills in our global economy by satisfying consumer wants and needs. Students will learn about the everyday business world along with being introduced to business basics such as starting a business, ownership types, operations, ethics, management structure, marketing, advertising and finances. Personal consumer and financial topics will also be studied within the context of our market economy including budgeting, money management, investments, credit cards, insurance, consumer credit and rights. Successful completion of this course will fulfill the Consumer Education graduation requirement.

PrerequisitesNone

Marketing

Course DescriptionThe focus of Marketing will be two-fold: It will introduce students to a marketing career, and it will prepare

students to be consumers. Students will learn about their rights and responsibilities, the use of credit,

comparative buying, satisfying wants and needs, marketing research, product planning, and advertising and

sales promotions. They will also learn how they can enter the marketing profession in our new consumer

driven economy. Successful completion of the Consumer Education module will fulfill the Consumer Education

graduation requirement.

Course DescriptionSales is a course designed to teach the steps of selling ideas, products, and services in detail. Everyone will be

selling in one or more of these areas during his/her life, so this course will benefit everyone. Selling principles

will be studied for preparation and presentation of a sale. This course will stress application activities as well

as text book knowledge. Successful completion of the Consumer Education module will fulfill the Consumer

Education graduation requirement.

Accounting

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to give the student a basic understanding of the fundamentals of accounting activities including the interpretation and analysis of records, statements, etc. It illustrates how systematic records form the basis for decisions that businessmen, industrialists, and government are confronted with every day in business. The college-bound business administration major is encouraged to take advantage of this course and the second year course offered during their junior and senior year. A supplementary unit on income tax for individuals and business is provided by the federal government for additional study. The students also have the opportunity during the course to complete two practice sets which represent the entire set of financial records for two companies. Many of the principles learned can apply toward establishing an efficient system for personal use. Successful completion of this course will fulfill the Consumer Education graduation requirement.

Project Lead the WayCourse DescriptionProject Lead The Way’s (PLTW) premier high school program, “Pathway To Engineering” is a dynamic four-year course of study integrated into the students’ core curriculum high school program that provides students with real-world learning and hands-on experience. The combination of traditional math and science courses with innovative Pathway To Engineering courses prepares students for college majors in engineering and engineering technology fields. This program is highly recommended for students interested in engineering and technology-related career paths. “Pathway To Engineering” courses engage high school students through a combination of activities-based, project-based, and problem-based (APPB) learning. APPB learning not only creates an environment for applying engineering concepts to real problems, but also prepares students to: solve problems, participate as part of a team, lead teams, speak to a public audience, conduct research, understand real-world impacts, analyze data, and learn outside the classroom. Project Lead The Way provides an excellent foundation for addressing and implementing real solutions to real problems with contemporary technology and applied logic.

Engineering Graphics

Course DescriptionThese sequential courses continue to provide the fundamentals in the principles of mechanical/technical

drawing and computer aided design and drafting (CADD). This course will continue from previous topics on to

new topics including design process and presentation, threads and fasteners, developments and intersections

with pattern layout, surface modeling, conceptual mass designs, 3-D design and solid modeling, 3-D

renderings, and complex assembly drawings using AutoCAD, Inventor, and 3D Studio Max software. Students

interested in engineering related careers are encouraged to enroll in these sequential CADD courses.

PrerequisitesCADD/Drafting 2. Open to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Available for Honors Credit

Types of projects student will be working on...Blueprint reading, freehand sketches, 2-D CADD drawings—multi-views, auxiliary views, section views, 3-D

design and solid modeling, sheet metal developments & intersections, implementing Autodesk Inventor

software—3D parts, drawing sheets, and animated & detailed assembly presentations.

CADD Computer Aided Design & Drafting

Course DescriptionThese two courses provide the fundamentals in the principles of mechanical/technical drawing and computer aided design and drafting (CADD). All students enrolled in these courses will work on personal computers equipped with AutoCAD software. Topics include 2-D drawings, pictorial views, isometric, oblique, and multi-view drawings, orthographic projection, polyhedron model construction, proper dimensioning techniques, introduction to basic 3-D drawings and 3-D CADD, auxiliary views, section views, threads and fasteners, assembly drawings, and an introduction to architectural drawings using AutoCAD software. Students interested in engineering and architectural related (including Interior Design) careers are encouraged to enroll in these sequential CADD courses as these careers require the use of CADD software.

PrerequisitesNone: Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors

Types of projects student will be working on...Blueprint reading, proper lettering, dimensioning, 2-D freehand sketches, pictorial views—isometric, oblique, and orthographic views, 2-D CADD drawings—single view & multi-views, threads & fasteners, basic auxiliary views and section views, and 3-D design and solid modeling.

Architectural CAD/Drafting

Course DescriptionThese sequential courses provide the fundamentals in the principles of architectural drawing using computer aided design and drafting (CADD). This course will build on material learned in CADD/Drafting I & II or Architectural/CADD Interiors. Topics include fundamentals of residential design, proper architectural dimensioning techniques, blueprint reading, materials used in construction, door/floor/window treatments, the preparation of presentation drawings including floor plans, elevations, alternative building materials, estimating materials and building codes, presentation renderings with a “walk through video” presentation of the house, and the completion of a set of architectural working drawings for residential and/or commercial structure(s) using AutoCAD and AutoCAD Architecture, Revit Architecture, and 3D Studio Max software. Students interested in Architectural-related careers are encouraged to enroll in these sequential Architectural Drafting courses upon completion of CADD/Drafting 2 or Architectural CADD/Interiors.

PrerequisitesNone: Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors

Types of projects student will be working on...Basic residential floor plan design, complete set of working blueprints for a residential structure, 2D sketches, various kitchen designs, foundation plans, wall sections, electrical plans, plumbing plans, HVAC (heating, ventilation, and cooling) plans, roof designs, stairs, detailed elevations, door and window schedules, 3D design and renderings, animated walk-through of an interior space, commercial structure design, conceptual mass elements design, non-traditional structure design, plot plans, topography, and house orientation on plot plan.

Architectural CADD/Interiors

Course DescriptionThis year-long course is an introductory study of CADD and Interior Design. It provides an introduction to the use of computer-aided drafting & design software for use in interior design. It also introduces the student to the elements & principles of design, such as line, shape, space, balance, rhythm, proportions, and variety through a series of projects using CADD. This course will familiarize students with interior design uses of architectural and CADD software, 3D modeling, and CADD rendering techniques for presentations. The student will learn to use the computer as a design and technical tool to create functional details & analysis. The software covered in this year-long course are AutoCAD (2D & 3D), AutoCAD Architecture, Revit, 3DS Max, and/or Autodesk Viz. Content will include learning to draw basic 2D and 3D designs, basic architectural dimensioning techniques, spatial planning, building codes, architectural rendering, animation, presentations, home furnishings equipment & accessories, creating a personal interior design portfolio, and future career opportunities. This course is highly recommended for students with an interest in architecture and/or interior design.

PrerequisitesOpen to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors

Types of projects student will be working on...Blueprint reading, floor plan sketches, CAD drawings of floor plans, residential traffic pattern analysis, universal design, physical & psychological needs analysis, creative 3D furniture design and modeling, creative color wheel, design boards, realistic client-based design projects of interior/exterior residential/commercial spaces, budget planning, spatial planning, and client analysis.

Studio TV

Course DescriptionStudents enrolled in Studio Television Production will produce The Barrington Bulletin weekly school news program. Students in this class also produce the District 220 video magazine. The course will stress the development of the following studio and field production skills: project planning, scripting, camera operation, composition, editing, sound recording, lighting, crewing, news reporting, news anchoring, programming and production management.

PrerequisitesThere are no prerequisites to enter Studio Television Production I. Interested students must fill out a course application that can be obtained in the library or from your counselor.

Types of projects student will be working on...Students will develop ideas and produce short video segments for The Barrington Bulletin and the District 220 video magazine. The Barrington Bulletin is broadcast throughout the school and on Comcast channel 97. The District 220 video magazine appears on the District 220 website. Students may also develop projects for local and national film/video festivals as well as for a variety of other purposes within the school and community.

Video Production

Course DescriptionThis course provides a unique classroom experience where students learn the fundamentals of video production through the creation of video projects using Final Cut Pro, iMovie HD, Photo Booth and other video enhancing applications. Video Production is a hands-on course that empowers the student with the ability to integrate video projects in conjunction with many aspects of BHS. Students will complete a variety of video projects throughout the course of the class including making music videos, animations, documentaries etc.

PrerequisitesNone: Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Available for Honors Credit

Types of projects student will be working on...Students will create videos for the new stadium’s jumbotron, Barrington channel 97, school commercials, senior breakfast video, public service announcements, sports highlights etc. Video Production students have created projects for the Chicago Bulls, Bears, ESPN, NFL Films, American Film Institute, FOX News Chicago, Chevy and the Great Minds Foundation. In the school year 2007-2008 Video Production students won 7 Emmy Awards and 3 Crystal Pillars from the Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Digital Arts

Course DescriptionDigital Arts is a broad, hands on survey of computer based art production. Class projects are designed to

immerse the student in the dynamic field of computer arts. Students will use the computer as a creative tool

and incorporate digital media in their process and delivery format. Projects may include digital photography,

mixed media, illustration, animation, digital video and sound editing. Students are encouraged to develop

their own solutions and approaches to a wide variety of assignments. Collaboration is encouraged and

occasionally required.

PrerequisitesNone: Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Available for Honors Credit

Types of projects student will be working on...Digital Collages, Self Portraits, Landscapes, Flash Animation. Digital Arts students have created graphics for

the new stadium’s jumbotron, school activities, local businesses and musicians.

Information Processing

Course DescriptionDevelop keyboarding speed and accuracy necessary for business and college success. Learn shortcuts in MS

Word to quickly produce personal, academic, and business documents such as business letters, envelopes,

resumes, research papers, tables, charts, and advertisements. This one-semester course meets the prerequisite

for Information Processing II, Computer Applications I and Web Page Design 1.

PrerequisitesNone: Open to freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors.

Types of projects student will be working on...Become a faster, more accurate typist, Learn to properly format documents, Format and compose Business

Letters, Format several types of business and academic documents, Explore for careers and prepare for job

Course DescriptionPrepare for college and business success with Computer Applications. New students and employees are expected to be proficient in MS Office--PowerPoint (presentations), Excel (spreadsheets), Access (database management), and Word (documents) Students completing this course with a B or higher may be eligible to receive Harper College credit for CAS 160.

Webpage Design

Course DescriptionStudents will be introduced to the W3C standards as they build web pages using Adobe Design Premium

CS3 software (Dreamweaver, PhotoShop, Fireworks, and Flash). Features include graphics, image maps,

navigation bars, lists, tables, forms, and cascading style sheets. Students will develop an electronic portfolio

to show potential clients. Students completing this course with a B or higher may be eligible to receive Harper

College credit for WEB 150.

PrerequisitesInformation Processing (course or exam), Graphic Arts, Digital Arts, Video Production, or CADD.

Types of projects student will be working on...Students develop and publish an electronic portfolio showcasing their websites.

Animation & Game Design

Course DescriptionThis introductory course in computer programming begins by exploring the concepts of how computers work,

how information is processed, and how programs allow the user to define and control a process. Starting

with the animation of 3-D objects, and later by developing sophisticated computer games, students will learn

higher level algorithmic thinking in a structured programming environment. Students will utilize easy to

understand computer interfaces (ie ‘drag and drop’) without having to learn a specific computer programming

language syntax. No prior programming experience is necessary.

PrerequisitesSuccessful completion of an introductory computer-based elective in the Applied Arts department, a grade of

B or higher in Geometry A or B, and/or approval of Department Chair.

Types of projects student will be working on...Story boarding, Sims character animation, life-like movement, basic and advanced game design, game

mechanics, final project of your choosing.

RoboticsCourse DescriptionThis introductory course in language specific computer programming begins with programming the movement of robots on a computer screen, followed by learning to program free standing robots. In this class students will learn to write their own computer programs from an object-oriented perspective. Number systems key to computer programming, flowcharting, algorithm development, structured programming, and step-wise refinement will follow. AP Computer ScienceCourse DescriptionThis course introduces students to the formal concepts of object-oriented computer programming, including program design, control structures, data structures and algorithms using the Java programming language. Concepts included in this course will be language syntax, error debugging, defining classes and methods, graphical-user interfaces (GUI), HTML and applets. Students will also study advanced concepts and techniques such as objects, inheritance, abstract data types, arrays, lists, queues, trees, searching, sorting, and recursion. This course includes a major emphasis on the AP Computer Science Gridworld Case Study, and prepares the student to pass the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam. Students enrolled in this course are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement test administered in May. While it is helpful to have some prior programming experience (ie Robotics), it is not a requirement for this class.

Computer Programming

Course DescriptionComputer Programming Advanced Honors. This course is designed for the student who has successfully

completed AP Computer Science and wants to independently pursue the further study of advanced computer

science topics. Students will work directly with the instructor to design an approved individualized project of the

student’s choosing, and will then perform their own research, analysis, design, development, implementation,

testing, and evaluation of their project. Students who take this course must be self-motivated to be able to

consistently work independently on a significantly challenging project that is of interest to them.

Course DescriptionThe Graphic Arts program at Barrington High School is designed to provide students with a wide range of content within the Graphic Arts Industry. It provides a well-rounded foundation of knowledge and skills, focusing on real-life application, to prepare students for their next venture after High School. The courses cover all of the latest computer software and production techniques. Students will have a strong understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite Software including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator. Emphasis is on digital design, visual techniques, and production.

Student Occupational Studies

Course DescriptionStudent Occupational Studies is a general cooperative work program with related classroom activities. It is a program that extends the realm of the classroom beyond the school setting into the world of careers. It will provide the student with an opportunity to become acquainted with the values important to become successful in the world of work. Student Occupational Studies (S.O.S.) provides on-the-job experiences for men and women who are of junior or senior standing and are at least sixteen years of age. Students earn one half credit per semester while employed in the community and one-half credit from the classroom experi ence per semester. The Consumer Education requirement will also be fulfilled upon completion of the first and second semester. Students must obtain an application from their counselor before enrolling in the program.

Child Development

Course DescriptionThis course is an introduction into the study of children from conception through age four. Developmental

areas studied will include the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and moral. In addition, the course will

include child development theories, parenting, prenatal development, nutrition, child abuse and an awareness

of careers involving children. The skills and creative techniques learned will serve as a basic foundation for

working with children in a preschool setting.

Course DescriptionThis course actively involves the student in planning and teaching a preschool for three and four year olds.

Using their background experience from the Child Development course as a foundation, students will plan

lessons and implement activities. Students will be introduced to the different forms of formal observations

and produce a portfolio. Students will have an opportunity to job shadow in the elementary schools. Students

interested in early childhood or elementary education, psychology, social work or parenting will find the

course useful and interesting.

Course DescriptionThis course is designed to help prepare students for living on their own.

Emphasis will be placed on consumer decision making. Units of study include handling finances, taxation,

creating a resume and interviewing for jobs, purchasing food, caring for clothes, determining insurance

needs, housing choices, transportation needs and costs, and consumer services and protection. Successful

completion of this course will fulfill the Consumer Education graduation requirement.

Creative Foods

Course DescriptionThis class is designed to show students the variety of roles that food plays in our lives and how to creatively

use food to meet these roles. Students will be able to create menus and meal plans for each of the different

stages within the life cycle, along with, using food creatively in entertaining situations. This class will allow

students to learn and use a hands-on approach to change food from what you buy in the store to exciting and

inventive creations. Students will learn the basics of food preparations including but not limited to; kitchen

FashionCourse DescriptionFashion I and II are basic clothing construction classes. Students in Fashion I sew a simple garment, such as pajama pants or a simple skirt or dress, for themselves, using a pattern. Fashion II students make a more complicated garment that includes sleeves, a collar and buttons. They also construct their garment, using a pattern.

PrerequisitesFashion I through Advanced is sequential. Design & Merchandising has no prerequisites.

Types of projects student will be working on...Construction clothing, making patterns, draping fabric, and embellishing garments.Design A Line: Design and illustrate an original clothing line, choose fabrics, incorporate an original textile design, create a customer description, name the line, design a business card, develop wholesale and retail prices and then display and market the line. Students also had the opportunity to participate in Harper College’s “Challenge” in which they constructed, embellished, and modeled their garment at Harper’s annual fashion show.

Course DescriptionThese sequential woods courses are designed to teach students skills that include safety around tools and

equipment, measurement, hand tool use and identification, wood joints, board foot computation, power tool

and machine use, project selection, planning and construction. Student interest projects will be used to gain
