Baron & Budd Public Interest Scholarship Program 2011-2012

APPLY NOW

The William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law is pleased to announce

the 2011-2012 Baron and Budd Scholarship Program, which will provide scholarships of

$4500 to support four to six students who commit to working a minimum of 300 hours

during the academic year with a non-profit organization providing legal services to

underserved individuals or communities.

An interested student must arrange an organizational sponsor for his or her

proposed work before submitting an application for the scholarship. A sponsoring

organization must be a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit providing legal services and/or

advocacy to underrepresented individuals or communities in the central Texas area.

Government agencies, labor unions, and legislative offices do not qualify. A Scholar

must work under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

The scholarship is open to 2Ls and 3Ls who have completed the on-line FAFSA

www.fafsa.ed.gov application and have established need and who have completed the on-

line law school scholarship application at https://utdirect.utexas.edu/losch/sch.WBX. The

scholarship is distributed as a merit scholarship through the Financial Aid Office. (If you

have questions about how the scholarship might affect your financial aid package, please

consult the Financial Aid Office.) Scholars must work the required 300 hours between

August 24, 2011 and the last class day of the spring 2012 semester. In the event that a

Scholar does not meet the hours requirement within the prescribed timeframe, the Scholar

may be required to repay the scholarship.

A student who has already received this scholarship is not eligible to reapply. A

student may not receive academic credit and the scholarship for the same work.

Scholars will be selected based on their credentials, their commitment to public

service, their financial need, and the sponsoring organization and proposed work.

Scholars will be selected in early July and early September. The first deadline is

noon on Friday, July 1, 2011, and recipients will be announced by Friday, July 8. The

final application deadline is noon on Friday, September 2, 2011, and the recipients will

be announced by Wednesday, September 7. Applicants who apply in July but are not

selected will automatically be considered in the September applicant pool, unless they

notify Mary Crouter ([email protected]) that the application is withdrawn.
