Bike-a-thon for Abigale

Here I am at 8am getting the bike-a-thon underway with BPL’s Caroline Brogden.

Last month I took part in a bike-a-thon at Fitness Flex, Doncaster, in order to raise money for local girl Abigale Cook.

Abigail, seven, has been diagnosed with Batten Disease a rare genetic condition in which she experiences seizures and dementia-like symptoms. Doctors have also told her she will eventually lose her sight and mobility and may not live past the age of 14. Abigail, who is just one in 200 children in the UK with the rare disease, has decided to come up with a bucket list of things she wants to achieve in the meantime and one of them is to “Swim with Dolphins” in Orlando Florida.

We at fitness flex were all helping push the fundraising pot past the £6,000 mark (cycling 618 miles over 10 hours) to help make the Florida dream a reality. We were even joined by BPL’s Derek the Dolphin who had it on good authority that his dolphin relatives in Florida couldnt wait to meet Abigale - she was so pleased she drew a picture of Derek....wearing a pearl necklace and a dress!!! Football played in the main hall at Penistone (with more enthusiasm than skill)

Penistone and District Community Partnership have re-opened Penistone Leisure Centre after it was closed due to cut-backs in the summer.

Sporting Penistone, the group behind the re-opening, was founded in early 2011 as a result of the closure and is governed by a voluntary board formed from local residents and users of the facility together with Penistone and District Community Partnership. Thanks to the exceptional efforts of the board and grants from the Co-op Community Fund, Peak Parks and Penistone Town Council, along with donations and tradesmen giving their services for free, not to mention the outstanding generosity of the people of Penistone and the surrounding areas the centre has made a remarkable recovery.

Martyn Housden a Director of the Penistone and District Community Partnership told The Barnsley Eye;

“Since the re-opening, some things have gone more easily than expected, while others have proved harder. We have developed a good team of instructors who use the venue and we currently have about 10 hours of classes in the main hall attended by about 150 to 200 people each week which is a good foundation. At the moment the main hall is also available to rent and the gym will soon be up and running”.

BPL Celebrate 2012 with a National Award

2012 has been wonderful yet challenging year for BPL which culminated in the Barnsley Metrodome winning a National Fitness Award. (Right).

The recession has hit many businesses hard over the last few years but BPL has had to be innovative to combat the challenges, we have shown that even in tough times, with the right mentality and work ethic, businesses can still thrive.

BPL has improved their facilities at the right time and in the right areas. People who are cutting back due to financial difficulties can still have family fun without the expense of booking a holiday abroad.

Back in February 2012 the Barnsley Metrodome opened its highly anticipated 1 million pound water park, Calypso Cove, which saw the overall visitors increase by nearly 7,000 with a footfall of 21,700 visitors during the Easter holidays. The Metrodome also completed the refurbishment of the fitness suite to cope with the increase of membership demand.

Royston Leisure Centre had refurbishments on the pool area and BPL further increased its portfolio by opening a brand new gym, Fitness Flex in Doncaster town centre.

The Olympic effect had an incredible impact at several BPL sites. The Metrodome received 50,062 swimmers, a huge increase of 49% on the previous year.

Since 2012 the number of gym memberships across Barnsley Leisure Centres has increased by 32% from 7202 members to over 10,000. As previously mentioned, the year culminated in a remarkable achievement with the Barnsley Metrodome made it down to the final six from hundreds of applicant. That in itself is a great achievement. However BPL got one stage further and were recognised as the Local Authority/Leisure Trust Gym of the Year at the National Fitness Awards.

BPL Chief Executive, Tim Wilson said: “We have had one fantastic year in 2012. A year filled with national pride and success with the Olympics and Paralympics. The conclusion of 2012 brought an early Christmas present for BPL with us winning at the National Fitness Awards, the sense of pride was sincerely overwhelming.

We hope 2013 is just as successful and continue to offer an outstanding service to our customers”.

Businesses have taken the opportunity to explore how Barnsley-born Christian missionary James Hudson Taylor’s links with China could benefit his hometown’s economy at a special event.

Impressive numbers of business people defied inclement weather to attend Monday’s meeting at The Civic, Barnsley, held by Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce and the James Hudson Taylor Group, which examined the economic, educational and social openings that Mr Hudson Taylor’s worldwide profile could generate for Barnsley.

Mr Hudson Taylor first visited China in 1854 and over 70 million Chinese Christians boast Barnsley as their spiritual home today, with many expressing their intention to visit the town, along with an estimated further 30 million people from elsewhere in the world.

The event saw businesses engage with a range of speakers, expert in areas of Chinese culture, language, business ethics and education, and discuss the effect a tourist boom would have both on the town and the businesses within it.

The prospect of transforming The Arcade within the town centre into a ‘Chinatown’-type quarter was also raised and favourably received.

Owen Gleadall, President of Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce, said: “We believe there are huge opportunities for us to exploit from creating strong links with Chinese Christians, and other Christians from elsewhere in the world, who wish to visit Barnsley and trace James Hudson Taylor’s past.

Green is for Go at Local Bike Company A local man has turned his passion for classic BMX bicycles into a budding environmentally-friendly business with free help from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber.

Glynne Ensor and his wife Keeley have teamed up to launch Ree-Cycle, based on Hillside Court in Rotherham, which is the ideal place for any BMX or biking fanatic - offering new, used and reconditioned BMX, lowrider, mountain and dirt bikes.

Keeley is the Director of Ree-Cycle and received assistance from the Chamber through the Regional Enterprise Programme (funded by ERDF), in the form of marketing tips from Business Advisor Jav Khan. (Pictured right with Glynne).

A long-standing biking enthusiast, Glynne has created something of a relaxed ‘Aladdin’s Cave’ for fellow bikers with a large range of spares, accessories and clothing available – in addition to providing a ‘bespoke’ service for those wanting to purchase a bike. glynne said: “The bikes we sell are put together by hand with care and our customers really like that personal touch. The bonus is that we are helping the environment by using parts and bikes that would otherwise have been destroyed.”

A national charity has extended its thanks to local car dealership Polar Ford, based on Wakefield Road, for their efforts in collecting hundreds of gift-filled shoeboxes which have since been distributed to disadvantaged children in developing countries over Christmas.

The shoeboxes, put together by members of the public, schools, church and community groups, contained everything from sweets and toys to toothbrushes and felt-tip pens. They were distributed to children living in orphanages and hospices in countries such as Bosnia, Montenegro and all over Africa who would otherwise have had no

presents to open over the festive period.

Over 8,500 gift-filled shoeboxes were collected by Polar Ford and other dealerships in its parent group Ford Retail, which has supported the charity for the past seven years.

Simon Barrington, Executive Director of Samaritan’s Purse, the charity which organises the Operation Christmas Child shoebox appeal said: “We would like to thank Polar Ford and all the members of the public who wrapped, packed and brought in their shoeboxes. Thanks to them, many thousands of children, who otherwise wouldn’t receive presents, knew they weren’t forgotten at Christmas.”

Star Slimmer Tony Happy to Gain PoundsA Barnsley man has gained over £350 by selling clothes which were three sizes too big for him and a new career.

Tony Rigby joined his local slimming world group in March and has lost over 4 stone. Realising that he needed a whole new wardrobe and being strapped for cash after losing his job in February, He took to the internet to solve the problem. He listed just 45 items of clothing and sold them all, with one item bagging him £77.

Tony says ‘I hated being overweight and tried doing something about it on my own but it didn’t last very long, I was miserable and never lost much weight so gave up’. I always thought slimming groups were just about women so I was really nervous about joining a group but now wish I’d have done it sooner! I instantly felt at ease and the bonus was seeing that the consultant was male and I wasn’t the only man in group!’

Tony began following Slimming Worlds Food Optimising eating plan, which is a big hit with men and women alike as everyone can eat hearty meals and still lose weight brilliantly. ‘The great thing about this plan is that I never go hungry, in fact it’s the opposite, I eat more now that I did before! it’s about healthy eating, whatever your appetite, no fads and no gimmicks!’ Now I cook fantastic filling meals like Spaghetti Bolognese, Roast dinners and Curry’s in a low fat way and lose weight whilst still enjoying a drink on the weekend and meals out too – brilliant! I’ve always believed a happy ending was possible for everyone, even though I’ve been a singleton for quite a few years - I wouldn’t have much credence as a romantic novelist if I didn’t. Still, even I was quite surprised at the way I fell in love last year. And you can keep your grand gestures – it happened thanks to a roll of brown tape.

Yep, there I was courting a nice chap whilst I was preparing to move house and he brought me some flat packed boxes. And a roll of brown tape in case I didn’t have any. And I was rather knocked back at the daft silly small thoughtfulness that he’d think to bring some tape up. Simple as that – fell hook line and sinker due to that little kindness.

Funny isn’t it – the effect that being in love can have on you. I’d forgotten what an intoxicating drug love can be. And at the moment I’m a fully-fledged addict with no intentions to go to rehab.

As the Troggs said ‘Love is all around’ and you’d be surprised how many stories I pick up when I’m doing talks – people eager to tell me their tales of how they and their partners got together. Recently doing a talk at Worbrough, an 83 year old lady came up to me and tapped my Autumn Crush book, which is a story about life’s abilities to grow new buds just when you think all hope may be gone. ‘That’s me,’ she said. ‘Going round the clock and discovering Spring again.’ It turns out that 68 years ago, she and her then-beau fell out rather dramatically. She took up with another boy, her man fled to Wales heartbroken. The lady married and was happy, but always wondered what happened to her lost love. Widowed in the nineties and alone for many years, her granddaughter searched for him on the net a couple of years ago – and she found him and he had also lost his partner in the nineties and was alone again. He gave our Worsbrough lady a surprise phone call – ‘I was fifteen again,’ she sighed to me. Anyway – to cut a long story short, they were married last year. ‘And was he worth waiting for?’ I asked. ‘Oh yes,’

she beamed. Couldn’t make that up, could you?

I knew what she meant – love really does take you back to being a teenager again. The mirror quite adamantly tells me that this must be an internal metamorphosis only – but then love, thankfully, is a bit short-sighted. I remember having a huge crush on a friend of mine when I was in my twenties, me: size ten figure, Farrah Fawcett-Major hair (it was ‘in’ at the time!). He however was madly in love with a Newcastle-brown swigging portly girl with lank hair and teeth with which she could have eaten an apple through a barbed wire fence. He was besotted. But thank goodness love needs a Labrador and a white stick, otherwise there would be a 3 million mile long queue outside Angelina Jolie’s and George Clooney’s doors and no postmen needed anywhere else on Feb 14th.

So, may I wish you all a very merry Valentine’s Day. I hope this copy of the Eye finds you getting giddy about sending a Valentine’s card and setting the wheels in motion. Or just using the occasion to take some time out to spend with your loved one. But don’t lose hope if you’re planning to spend the day holed up watching the TV. If ‘it’ happened to me over a roll of brown tape, ‘it’ could happen to you in an aisle in Morrisons, walking the dog in the park or buying a fish in the market. Fact, my friends, is always much stranger than fiction.

You know you need to exercise, but finding the motivation to get moving is sometimes a challenge. On days when exercise is the last thing you want to do, an extra dose of motivation helps you take the first step.

Analysing your exercise style allows you to choose physical activities and the best time of day to aid in your exercise motivation. Here are some tips to help you stay motivated;

Healthy Lifestyle Tips for 2013

Create a PlaylistMusic offers a motivator when it comes to your overall mood and attitude toward exercise. Create a playlist of songs that make you want to move. Songs with a steady, fast beat often work well for exercise motivation.

Share Your GoalsIf your friends and family know about your exercise goals, you might be more inclined to stay on track and reach them.

An exercise partner, either a real person or a virtual partner, is one way to share your goals.

Work Towards SomethingIf the general health benefits of exercise aren’t enough to motivate you, give yourself something more to work toward. An athletic event, such as a race or triathlon, is an example of something that might motivate you to work out.

Go to Bed EarlyWhen you feel refreshed, you are more likely to have the energy and motivation to exercise.

Give It 10 MinutesGetting started with your workout is often the most challenging part. If you can actually get yourself out the door, you might feel motivated enough to continue with your exercise.

It can be that simple. Tell yourself that you only need to exercise for 10 minutes. After the first 10 minutes pass, you are usually in the groove of your workout and continue.

Album ReviewBe honest, when was the last time you actually played this album all the way through? It might have been a UK chart-topper, be a fixture on every “classic album” list, and the catalyst for post-punk, Oi!, New Wave, New Wave of Heavy Metal, indie rock, grunge, industrial and all that followed, but the Sex Pistols’ only studio long-player is still seen less as a rock album and more as a sociological artefact from a bygone era. When the album was reissued last month - I was horrified to find that I didn’t actually own it on CD. The only copy I had was an old festering vynil copy in my loft and a recorded C60 cassette version I had taped from said vynil version to listen to in my battered Ford Fiesta. There was even a “skip” on the second chorus to “bodies” which I always include when I’m singing along by force of habit.

Listening to the whole record digitally, (for the first time I may add) it is unbelievably good. Of course, I have heard the pistols on CD but it’s always been a mish mash of stuff from singles, compilation albums and soundtracks. Despite what you may have heard, they sure can play! Steve Jones guitar evokes Johnny Thunders of the New York Dolls. Paul Cook’s drumming keeps everything tight. Matlock’s songwriting has plenty enough melodies and as for the sneering Lydon...has England ever produced a better front man?

Don’t let yourself be fooled by Malcolm McLaren, the band’s avaricious and rent-a-quote manager, that the Sex Pistols were some kind of social experiment that he had fabricated. I reckon he was just hanging on to their coat-tails, milking the phenomenon for all it was worth.

If the listener today wonders just why it was that this 12-song album more than shocked, frightening a nation half to death in 1977, the clues are still here....the fact that even now as I write this piece - I was very reluctant to use the fourth word of the album title for fear of letters being sent to the magazine in complaint. I even blocked out “the B word” on the cover to make sure. Proof that even today..... the Sex Pistols are still a band you would never turn your back on and are still able to shock like no other. December saw Ska Legends Bad Manners, fronted by their enigmatic frontman Buster Bloodvessel, appear at The Picturedrome in Holmfirth for a sensational night of Ska Ska Ska!

The crowd at The Picturedrome were treated to a fantastic night comprising of Ska classics by Buster and the band that included many of their hits (11 of which were in the top 20). Lip up Fatty, Ne-Ne, Na-Na, Na-Na, Nu Nu, Special Brew, The Can Can, My Girl Lollipop and Walking in the Sunshine were all on the set list.

Crowd participation was high on the agenda and Buster (real name Douglas Trendle) seemed full of energy and never stopped moving, clearly showing that Bad Manners are still a brilliantly, entertaining live band to see now, just as they were in their 80’s heyday. PB

Barnsley Football Club last month appointed David Flitcroft as the new permanent first team manager.

Flitcroft outlined his thoughts and feelings on the job ahead at Oakwell.“Your life experiences bring you to a point where you either sink or swim and when I first took the job against Peterborough, you don’t know how you can lead that group; you don’t know if they want to be a part of what you’re doing, part of your message or if they’re going to follow you. And I think as a number two you always have that fear, a lot of numbers twos have failed and don’t want to make the step up.

“When I made the step up and realised I had a reaction from the players and a positive one from the staff, then I found that I could lead this group and I wanted to lead the group and I enjoyed it. Now that honeymoon period is over I’m sure I’ll be judged on what I do from this moment onwards. The word I’ll be using quite a lot is a ‘connection’. That connection is key to the success and the battles ahead that we’ve got.

Although performances on the pitch is key to winning over the Barnsley public, David Flitcroft says he and the players will need to engage with the community.

“We need to find the happy medium between getting out there to be seen doing the right thing and getting fans into the stadium,” he added. “The football players are responsible for what they do on the pitch, what they do on the pitch - the message will go out there – that will bring supporters in in itself. The board have made a stance to bring ticket prices down. Times are hard, times are hard for all those people out there in most towns and cities and Barnsley’s no different. If it gives a helping hand, once we’ve got them into the football club, we have to make sure

they enjoy the football product and that’s something we’ll be working tirelessly on.

“We’ll sit down with a team of people and try and decide on fresh projects. If we keep trying at new projects and initiatives and new ways of trying to excite fans, that’s something we’ve got to look into.”

Flitcroft’s message to the fans is clear and simple,

“Let’s hear that support and we’ll give you something to shout about.”

The Jazz Si’s enhanced looks and stylish extra features has been appealling to younger drivers who want their car to stand out from the crowd.

The Jazz Si wears 16-inch Chronos alloys which set it apart from standard models. A chrome sports front grille and rear spoiler add to the sporty look. Stylish embroidered carpet mats and Si branding on the boot lid and glove box highlight the car’s high specification. Customer feedback showed that younger Jazz owners were keen to stand out from the large number of other Jazz cars on the road.

They preferred bigger wheels and enjoyed the additional stylish touches of the first generation Jazz Sport. The Si grade has been launched in response to this, and combines sporty good looks with the Jazz’s fuel-sipping engine, low running costs, low emissions, value for money specification and C-sector space and practicality.

The Jazz is one of the UK’s most celebrated models, winning around 30 industry awards for reliability and customer satisfaction. Now built in Britain, Honda Associates will be ensuring that the Jazz maintains this level and continues to delight customers. The

Si grade is priced at an additional £870 over the 1.2 SE and 1.4 ES models, but offers nearly £2,000 worth of extra equipment. Both the 1.2 and 1.4 Si models launch with great PCP packages offering an APR of 5.9% over three years with a 25% deposit, or for 7.4% over three years with a 10 per cent deposit.

Potholes on Barnsleys roads could be much easier to spot in future, thanks to a design idea created by students in Italy. The initiative was uncovered by road maintenance campaign website, potholes.co.uk, as it continues its efforts to improve the state of the UK’s roads.

Domenico Diego and Cristina Corradini have designed the “Street Safe Initiative,” which comprises a brightly-coloured layer of asphalt a few inches beneath the surface of the road, which becomes visible when the road surface breaks up, making potholes easier to see and avoid.

The Eye reckons it’s a novel idea but... should we be looking at how to reduce costs by doing the job right in the first place, rather than creating expensive solutions that only have an effect once the pothole is already there? The Jury is out....let us know your thoughts.
