MEP Euro Election Business Briefing

Web solutions companyTownTalk has celebratedten years of supporting thebusiness community bywinning a contract toprovide an entire nationalnetwork of sites in NorthCyprus.

The Barnsley-based firm have beencommissioned to produce theirbusiness networking model for all thetown centres in Northern Cyprus. Thisproject will involve the companytraining local businesses in the use ofIT and internet marketing and is thefirst time they have beencommissioned to work abroad onsuch a large scale.

The project makes use of thesoftware they have developed for theUK market and, as the main marketfor Cyprus tourists and residentsoriginates in the UK, TownTalk’sexperience and pedigree won themthe deal.

“The TownTalk model has brought businesses togetherand created a structure where firms can market themselvescollectively in an effective manner,” said TownTalk chiefexecutive Phil Davies. “If there are hundreds of businessesin a town centre and if each one ups its game by one percent, the town centre receives a huge overall benefit.

“If a business attracts an extra customer, that customermay follow up on its trade with one shop by moving on toanother shop, and such a process ensures healthy footfalllevels. The TownTalk website is simply following thetraditional marketing notions of getting everyone togetherand sharing. Another positive off-shoot of the scheme isthat it gives businesspeople who aren’t that familiar with IT

the opportunity to dip their toe in the water and startlearning through the training we provide.”

The Total-e TownTalk scheme was piloted in SouthLondon and has since moved out rapidly to a number oftowns such as Burnley, Darlington and Loughborough. Theprinciple behind the project was to turn each town into anelectronic unit so it is viewed as a brand, such asMeadowhall.

The Cyprus Project will adopt the same principles, andis expected to take around four months to complete.

For more information on TownTalk, call 0845 6865855 or visit www.towntalk.co.uk,

We are sure that many businesses will be interested tohear the views of the respective candidates and, indeed, the candidates themselves will be able to get feedback fromthose local businesses attending.

Events section of www.brchamber.co.uk.

BarnsleyWorks Success HailedBarnsleyWorks, the town’s businessexhibition and networking event, has beenpronounced a success by exhibitors andorganisers.

Carol Cooper-Smith, director of Barnsley DevelopmentAgency, said the April event had been designed to raisethe aspirations of local small firms in addition to generatingbusiness leads.

"We had a great response, particularly to our Quick BizSpeed Dating session, which brought together over 30companies and organisations in a fast-moving round ofintroductions and sales pitches," she said.

Speakers at the seminar programme included Yorkshireentrepreneur Carl Hopkins, one of Channel Four's SecretMillionaires.

Event sponsors included the Chamber; BarnsleyDevelopment Agency; The Work and Skills Board; BPLeisure; University Campus Barnsley – part of the Universityof Huddersfield – and Business Link Yorkshire.

True Grit In The Face Of AdversityA local businessman is defying the oddsby masterminding charity treks aroundthe UK and Europe, just months after hispremises were destroyed by fire.

Bruce Riley of Total 4x4 Design and his 17-year-olddaughter Sarah, who is undertaking a Motor VehicleApprenticeship at Barnsley College, are both set for thefirst trip over the highest points in Britain in August, before tackling the continent in 2010.

Next year’s journey will see the pair cover thehighest, and most difficult, drivable passes in each ofthe 24 Western European countries, covering 15,000miles on the road, 5,000 miles off-road and 2,000miles of sea crossings.

However, Bruce has arguably experienced hishardest journey after his Darfield premises went up inflames back in December.

“It took a while to come up with the idea of settingup again at my home as I was walking around in adaze for two or three months,” Bruce said. “My headwas a mess after seeing a business I had spent 20 yearsbuilding up go up in flames - it was like a bereavement. Not only did I lose garage equipment, computers and

paperwork, there were also items of sentimental valuethat were lost too.

“But I have managed to pick up the pieces of thebusiness and plan the trip around Europe, although itmade sense to defer that for a year which is why wehave opted to go around Britain first. Now I havemanaged to start thinking more clearly again, thischallenge has given me a goal to go at.”

“I am both excited and a bit scared but I’m lookingforward to it,” Sarah added. “The good thing aboutgoing around the UK first is that, if we make anymistakes, we can learn from them when we go aroundEurope. I suppose it is a big challenge to take on for a17-year-old girl but I don’t really think about it in thatway, I just get on with all the preparation work we haveto do. All my friends are interested in what we’re doingand are right behind us.”

You can follow Bruce and Sarah’s progress on theirjourney on www.total4x4xdesign.co.uk. All proceedswill go to charity.

Anyone interested in sponsoring the pair should call07858 129870 or e-mail [email protected].

OWNERS of a business forbrides have been amazed atthe enthusiasm of customerssince they branched out into‘prom’ style clothing.

Morag Jackson and SarahSharman, who run Bellisimo onChapel Street, Birdwell, say onefamily was prepared to pay upto £300 for an outfit worn atparties to mark children eithermoving or leaving school.

Morag said: “There is not sup-posed to be a lot of moneyabout but it shocks me howmuch customers are preparedto pay for what is, in effect, a

sparkly dress or dinner suitwhich will only be worn once.”

The pair started selling ‘prom’wear last year and saw demandrise steadily.

It reaches a peak in the earlysummer when most leavingparties are held.

Morag said: “We did not haveenough clothing to cope withdemand.

“We think we have cateredfor that demand this time.”

One of the tricks of the tradeis to get a wide variety of outfitsin because no school leaverwants to be seen wearing the

same dress as someone else. The pair met when Sarah pro-

vided bridalwear for Morag’swedding more than 18 yearsago.

Neither of them realised atthe time they would eventuallygo into business in 2002.

Sarah had worked for variousbridal businesses and Moragwas a hairdresser.

The pair kept in touch andSarah was working from homewhen Morag decided to joinher when the shop opened.

WORKMATES Mark Scalesand Paul Heeley reactedbravely when they weremade redundant a few daysbefore Christmas.

They set up their own firmand started trading on thefirst Monday of 2009.

Mark, 37, from Pilley, andPaul, 36, from Dodworth, had worked for 20 years atBrocol Distributors asfinishers of kitchencomponents.

They had known for 12weeks that redundancy was

likely but it was still a shockwhen the axe finally fell. They decided to set up P MFinishing, a furniturerefurbishment, woodpainting and stainingcompany.

They are based in a part ofthe building occupied bytheir former employers atLaurence Works, SheffieldRoad, Penistone. Mark said:“We had talked about goinginto business together foryears. All of a sudden, youare faced with no choice. If

we had not started thecompany, we’d have driftedaway from doing what wedid to something likestacking shelves.”

The pair said business was‘steady’ over the first fewweeks but there are signsthat things are picking up.

Mark added: “One of thebiggest shocks when you gointo business is that youhave to do things likepaying tax yourself.

“There’s help for thosestarting businesses, but notnecessarily the sort of helpyou need.”

A CLAYCLIFFE printer has won thebiggest contract in its history.

Print City at Zenith Business Parkhas signed a deal with one of thebiggest companies of its kind in theworld.

Details of the contract with theinternational organisation have notbeen divulged because of a confi-dentiality clause.

Gemma Brennan, Print City’s direc-tor for legal and administrative oper-ations, said: “Jobs have not onlybeen secured but new positions willbe created as we quickly expand.”

It is believed the firm, whichemploys 48, will have to set on atleast four or five.

The deal has come about after thefirm created a management systemincorporating a number of standards.

Barnsley West and Penistone MPMick Clapham and British PrintingIndustry Federation chief executiveMichael Johnson presented certifi-cates to the firm.

Gemma said: “Through targetedtraining and investment, we can fur-ther demonstrate a commitment toprovide a world class service to theUK trade print market.

“We look forward to developingour relationship further with the BPIF,training firm D C Training andBarnsley Development Agency.

“We are working towards gainingInvestors in People (a training stan-dard) and further improving ourstanding in the printing world.

“All our staff are highly trained andour procedures are continuallyreviewed and updated to ensure ourservice and quality are of the higheststandard.”

The firm’s clients include severalmulti-million pound UK companies.

It was established in 1989 andmoved to Silkstone in 1991.

It produces anything from businesscards to full-colour brochures.

The firm moved to its 12,000-sq ftfactory at Zenith Business Park inspring 2002 from 5,000-sq ft premis-es in Skelmanthorpe where it hadbeen based since 1994.

In 2003, the company was namedwinner of the InwardInvestment cat-egory at the Barnsley BusinessAwards after spending more than£1m on a printing press and associat-ed computer equipment.

A THURGOLAND woman ishelping others to adapt theirwardrobes to cope with therecession.

Claire Dyson, a SouthYorkshire representative ofthe consultancy Colour MeBeautiful, says she is savingpeople money.

She has worked for the con-sultancy since June 2008 andclients tend to be people over40 whose children havegrown up with time and a bitof extra money on theirhands. Claire said: “How

many women buy an outfitwhich then sits in a wardrobefor ages? That is a waste ofmoney.

“Usually, the outfit is neverworn because it is the wrongstyle and body shape.

“If you are given guidelines, you won’t make that mis-take.”

She does talks to raisemoney for charity and pre-sentations to hairdressers andtheir clients.

She also appears at schools, hotels and wedding fayres.

“Not so long ago, I saw 12people in two days. That wasslightly scary,” she said.

She was born in London butbrought up in Leicestershire.

She moved to Yorkshire inthe 1980s and spent aboutten years as a clinical psy-chologist working with chil-dren and families inPontefract.

Claire decided she neededa change and renovated acouple of houses. She didflower design and becameinterested in colour.

MORTAGE broker Bryn Arnoldhas had to deal with theunexpected since the recessionstarted to bite last autumn.

Bryn, 34, has found himselfadvising people facing redundancyor who have received warningletters from banks because theyhave missed mortgage payments

instead of brokering mortgages, helping people re-mortgage ormove home.

He operates in Hoyland as UKFCSouth Yorkshire Limited and saysthe local housing market took aturn for the worse in October lastyear. He said: “There is business tobe had but you have to work

twice as hard for it. “I have had clients come to me

for help because they say there isa three-month waiting list to seethe Citizens’ Advice Bureau.

“I recently went to see a first-time buyer who was looking topurchase a new flat for £94,500which was on the market last year

for £135,000. The client has a tenper cent deposit but lenders willnot help first-time buyersinterested in new-build flats unlessthey have a 20 per cent deposit.”

Bryn set up UKFC SouthYorkshire in January 2008 with hispartner Marie Pearson.

He has worked in the financial

advisory sector since 1997 for CISInsurance and Allied Dunbar.

After a two-year spell in thetravel industry, he worked for theHalifax and in April 2006 helpedto set a business, Relax Mortgages.

“Banks have tightened things. “My overall possible income has

declined by 60 or 70 per cent.”

THE floods and heavy rain of summer 2007 probablyturned out to be a blessing in disguise for Ros Bennett.

She used to sell saddles, brasses and other equestrianequipment at at least 12 horse shows a year.

Nearly all of them were cancelled because of theweather so Ros decided to move to a shop at ElsecarHeritage Centre.

Since opening Rosette almost 18 months ago, Ros hasachieved a steady level of sales.

She said: “I am glad we moved indoors. There is nopacking and unpacking like we had to do when we didshows.

“Stuff like cardboard boxes would also get wet andsoggy when it rained.

“I love it at the heritage centre. We have a lot ofregular customers and pick up trade from visitors.”

Ros, who lives in Silkstone, rode horses when she wasyounger and her partner George Broomhead drivescarriages.
