BarnegatLight’scommercialfishingindustrybeganinthelate1800’sanditsreputationcontinuestogrowtothisday.Commercialfishingisthelifebloodofourcommunity,thelivelihoodofmanylocalresidentsandthusourheritage. SeveralgenerationsoffishermenmaketheirhomeinBarnegatLight,NJ.EachdaynumerouscommercialfishingvesselsdepartfromBarnegatLight’sdockstoheadoutintoopenseas.Eachexcursionisunpredictable.Overtheyearsaswellasjustrecently,tragedieshaveoccurredresultinginthedeathsofdedicated,devotedfishermen. Islandareembracinganewcommunityprojectcalledthe“Fishermen’sStoryMemorial”.Amagnificentbronzesculptedmonumentisunderconstructiontohonorallthosewhohavediedatseapursuingtheirlivelihoodbycommercialfishing,whichremainsthecountry’smostdangerousprofession.Theconstructionofthismonumentwillservetohonortheirmemoryandbecomeaplaceofreverenceandreflectionforfamilymembers,friendsandthegeneralpublic. TheprojecthasbeenapprovedbytheNJDEPandthesiteofthemonumentisintheBarnegatLighthouseStatePark,themostfrequentlyvisitedStateParkinNewJersey.Itwillsitjusttothewestof“OleBarney”certainlythemostrecognizedLighthouseinNewJersey.Thecompletecostoftheprojectisestimatedtobeinexcessof$80,000.Mostlocalresidentsandsmallbusinesseshavealreadydonated.Fundraisereventsarebeingheldbutweareinneedofmoremoney. GREAT BLUE HERON

The tall, long-legged great blue heron is the most common and largest of North American herons.

Greatblueheronsarewaders,typicallyseenalongcoastlines,inmarshes,orneartheshoresofpondsorstreams.Theyareexpertfishers.Heronssnaretheiraquaticpreybywalkingslowly,orstand-ingstillforlongperiodsoftimeandwaitingforfishtocomewith-inrangeoftheirlongnecksandblade-likebills.Thedeathblowisdeliveredwithaquickthrustofthesharpbill,andthepreyisswallowedwhole.Greatblueheronshavebeenknowntochoketodeathbyattemptingtoswal-lowfishtoolargefortheirlong,S-shapednecks.Thoughtheyarebestknownasfishers,micecon-stitutealargepartoftheirdiet,andtheyalsoeatinsectsandothersmallcreatures.

Beach Plum JellyABarnegatLighttreasure,wildbeachplumbushesgrowclosetosealevelnestledinthedunes.Aboutfivefeethighwithjaggedeggshapedleaves,theybearwhiteblossomsinearlyMaytoJune.Ifweathercondi-tionspermit,purplefruitberriesareabundantinSeptember.Beachplumjellymakersbraveticks,thornybushes,andcrankypropertyownersforagingforthesetangyberriesaboutthesizeofamarble.Hotspotsareadeepdarksecretasberriesarescarcedependinghowtheweatherhasinfluencedthistemperamentalandunreliableharvest.ComeAugustyouwillhear“anyberriesthisyear?”AsbeachplumjellyissuchalocalprizemanyhopeforeverySeptember.

Recipe1 1/2 gallons of fresh beach plums the goal is 4 cups pure strained juice7 cups sugar1 pkg certo pectin (sure gel)

• Combine washed berries and 1” of water in a large pot boil for 20 minutes

• Pour through jelly bag or metal sieve• Combine 5 cups of this fruit juice, 7 cups of sugar and 1pkg

of pectin• Bring to a full rolling boil -- continue for a full minute• Ladle into 1/2 pint sterilized jars - tighten lid and then un-

screw 1/2 turn to allow air to escape• If lid does not pop down -- refrigerate - in a few hours jars

SINBAD,Thewell-traveleddogmascotoftheCoastGuardcutterCamp-bell,hadjustreturnedfromJapanbedeckedwithcampaignbarsandbattlestars.Hisbiography,“SinbadoftheCoastGuard,”wasonthenation’sbookstands,andhewasrevelinginthefamewhichhesojustlydeserved. SinbadhadjustcompletedapersonalappearancetourwhichtookhimtoNewYorkCity,Baltimore,Detroit,Chicago,andneighborhoodcitiestoonumeroustomention.Displayingalltheboredomtypicalofhumancelebrity,however,Sinbadshowedthathewastiredofitall.Afterhavingpresentedwiththe“keys”tonumerouscities,SinbadmadeastopoverinWashington,D.C.,bothforrestandtoseehisformerskipper,CaptainSamuelF.Gray,atHeadquarters.IgnoringalltheattentionbeinglavisheduponhimbyabevyofSpars,andforgettingallmilitarycourtesytemporarily,Sinbadclosedhiswearyeyes,andfellasleepintheCap-tain’sOffice. ItwasimperativethatonehundredcopiesofSinbad’sbookbesentoutthatafternoonfordistribution,andtheCap-taindecidedtohaveSinbad“autograph”them.TheonehundredbooksandaninkpadweresetoutonatableandSinbadwascalledtodothehonors.Herefusedtobudge.Hewastiredaftersomanypersonalappearances,andwasmakingnobonesaboutit. LiftingSinbadbodily,Iplacedhimonthetablealongsidethebooksandtheinkpad.WhileaSparopenedeachbooktotheflyleaf,IliftedSinbad’srightpawontotheinkpadonehundredtimesandimpressedhis“autograph”onasmany

books. Withoutonceawakening,Sin-badautographedtheentireonehundredbooks.

Bytheriver,peekingthroughthetrees,finallytheysawthelight.TheyventuredintoCamdenlookingforthelightship.AllthattheyknewwasthatitwasneartheBenFranklinBridgebutnotmuchelse.Circlingwhatseemedforhours,theywereonthestreetwherethelightshipwassupposedtobelocatedbuttheshipwasnowheretobefound.

AttheendoftheroadtheDelawareRiverflowedandlookingoverthetrees,theyspottedthetopofthemastandthelightofthelightship.Ah,theywerenear!Asigncoveredbyleaveswasnailedtoatreeattheentranceofthedirtroad.Thescenedrasticallychangedandtheexcitementgrew.

Theyleftthecitybehindandenteredaboatersparadise.Thedirtroadwaslinedwithlarge,lushtrees.Thelotwaslinedwithamarveloushistoryofantiqueboats.Justaroundthebend,themastscrownedwithlightsthatonceguidedshipssafelythroughBarnegatInletandtheredbowoftheBarnegatLightshipwasvisible.

RodneySadlersmiledandwelcomedthevisitorsthattooksuchaninterestinhislightship.RodneyisthecurrentowneroftheBarnegatLightship.AfterthelightshipwasdecommissionedonOctober13,1967itwasdonatedtoChesapeakeMaritimeMuseum,St.Michaels,MD,whereitremainedthereuntiltheearly1970´s.ThenitwassoldtoHeritageShipGuildforfloatingdisplayatPennsLanding,Philadelphia(PA).ThegroupdisbandedandtransferredownershiptothepresentownerMr.RodSadlerwhostartedanewgroupcalledCamdenMuseumandLearningCenter.Mr.Sadler,ownerofthePynePoyntMarineServices,wantstorefurbishtheshipandmoveittotheCamdenwaterfront.In1980,RodneyS.SadlerfoundedhisMarineServicesinNorthCamden.In1992,hewashiredbyCamdenCountytoopenandoperateWigginsParkMarina,whereheiscurrentlytheharbourmaster.SadlerhasvolunteeredhistimeasthePresidentofSaveOurWaterfront.Currentlythelightshipisonprivateproperty.Nopublicviewingisallowed.
