Burt Brown Barker (1874-1969), son of Oregon pioneers, grew up in Salem ,Oregon . He g raduated from Wilamette University, University of Chicag o an dHarvard . Barker received a law degree from Harvard law School . He practicedlaw in Chicag o and New York City . He retired from practice in 1938 . He an dhis wife and daug hter moved to Oreg on and settled in Portland . Barker hiredthe firm of Lawrence and Holford to design an eleg ant h ouse, appropriate fo rentertaining . Barker became the first vice-president of the University o fOregon . This position was mainly a public relations post . He was a pas tpresident of th e Oregon Historical Society and a leading h istorian . He wa sconsidered a national auth ority on Oregon pioneer Dr . John McLough lin and wrot emany articles about him . The house is significant for its association wit hBarker and as a rare example of th e French Renaissance style as used by EFL .
