About Pacific Vision Foundation

In 1977 a group of enthusiastic ophthalmologists, including our Chair Emeritus Bruce Spivey, MD, founded Pacific Vision Foundation (PVF). The Foundation was initially created to support the California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) Department of Ophthalmology. Today, PVF is a pioneering, high impact, sustainable social enterprise that is dedicated to outstanding eyecare, education and community service. Our mission is to provide excellent eyecare to all regardless of ability to pay.

We have established the Pacific Vision Eye Institute in the heart of San Francisco, just two blocks from City Hall. As of January 2019, 23 ophthalmologists and optometrists have offices onsite, along with the Lions Eye Clinic, CPMC Department of Ophthalmology, and the Low Vision Rehabilitation Center. Onsite is also the technology forward Education Center, that hosts the Ophthalmology Residency Program’s Grand Rounds weekly lecture and other medical conferences.

With our new state-of-the-art Ambulatory Surgery Center, slated to open in late 2019, Pacific Vision Eye Institute will add to its wide range of eyecare services to include eye surgery – All in one convenient location.

About Barkan

Pacific Vision Foundation supports educational and research activities within the CPMC Department of Ophthalmology, which includes hosting Barkan Day. Dr. Hans Barkan, whom the day is named after, served as the Department Chair from 1928-48 and formally instituted the residency program.

Barkan Day is broken up into two segments. The afternoon begins with the research symposium which features research presentations by residents with faculty and alumni as mentors who return to learn and share new discoveries and trends in the ophthalmic world.

The day transitions to cocktail hour and a gala dinner. This year at the dinner we will honor the contributions of one of our founders, Bruce Spivey, MD. With Dr. Spivey’s global notoriety we are expecting a number of international guests to attend the festivities.
