The pipeline has been proposed by petroleum explorer, Australian Gas Fields, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Energy World Corporation Ltd “to create a gas highway from the Bowen Basin fields to Abbot Point where it can be exported,” according to Stephen Fretwell, area superintendent for the company. The company is proposing $1.2bn development which includes the pipeline and a 2m tonne/annum Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) plant at Abbot Point (one litre of LNG is formed by compressing 600 litres of natural gas). The company has petroleum exploration licences for areas around Eromanga and has two petroleum leases at Gilmore, but at this stage had found mainly gas, Mr Fretwell said. “We can’t use the existing pipeline from the Gilmore gas field to the Barcaldine power station, but we hope to make an agreement with the owners to use the existing easement,” he said. “The pipeline offers real value to us, not only to carry the gas which the company produces, but it would allow us to take “stranded” gas, from explorers in the Bowen Basin who have found gas but have no other way to transport it.” Pipeline owners could not refuse to take gas from other producers and charged a “buy in, sell out” toll for the service, he said. For this reason landowners were unlikely to see a raft of separate pipelines, and the company intended to put junctions along the line where other gas producers could feed in product for processing at Abbot Point, he said. The letter sent to landowners was to get their contact details for an easement from Eromanga to the Gilmore gas field, and from Barcaldine to Abbot Point, and in case they were unable to use the existing easement from Gilmore to Barcaldine, he said. “At this stage we haven’t determined the actual pipeline route,” Mr Fretwell said. Under the Petroleum Act landholders could not refuse to have a pipeline easement through their properties, but the company wanted to sit down and negotiate, he said. The company would seek an easement 30m wide to build the pipeline but then it would contract to 6m for the pipe, an access track and right of way for inspections. “While we would provide compensation for the easement landholders will still be able to graze their animals on top of it, but they wouldn’t be able to put buildings or an access road over the top,” he said. Wishes collected in Blackall

A small crowd gathered at the Blackall Airport to welcome the Local Government Managers Association Wish Flight, which flew in from Barcaldine on Saturday 19 September.

Pilots Nick Clarke and Damon Fealy spent 16 days travelling to 37 Queensland Councils collecting money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation Australia, travelling in the Queensland built Jabiru J-170.

Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting work. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.

Mayor Jan Ross and Chief Executive Officer, Ken Timms presented Nick and Damon with a cheque for $1000 being funds raised by the community at the Barefoot Bowls Charity Events held in both Tambo and Blackall the weekend prior. A further $100 was donated from the sale of drinks and a sausage sizzle on the day.

BTRC CEO Ken Timms, Mayor Jan Ross present pilots Nick Clarke and Damon Fealy with a cheque for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

New gas pipeline proposed for region

GRAZIERS to the west of Blackall and in the Barcaldine region have questioned why a coal seam gas pipeline may be built through their land when there is already a pipeline from the Gilmore gas field to Barcaldine which goes via Blackall.

“The pipeline offers real value to us, not only to carry the gas which the company produces, but it would allow us to take “stranded” gas, from explorers in the Bowen Basin who have found

gas but have no other way to transport it.”

Pipeline owners could not refuse to take gas from other producers and charged a “buy in, sell out” toll for the service, he said.

“While we would provide compensation for the easement landholders will still be able to graze their animals on top of it, but they wouldn’t be able to put buildings or an access road over the top,” he said.

birds on shoulder, hooks, eye patches, not to mention ugly scars, attended the final assembly before the holidays. Many awards were presented to deserving students and staff before they took a well earned break after excelling themselves in the recent national testing for literacy and numeracy. Congratulations on the successes of Mr Smith and his dedicated staff – it was wonderful to be “aboard” such a rollicking ship even if the pirates were just a bit scary!!!!

Friday afternoon I attended the “Musomagic” production presented by the students of the Tambo State School “Bullseye Matilda Highway” Group. The performance brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience. I believe we may have an anthem for Tambo, titled “Come Outback”. The students created the emotive words of living in a close knit connected hometown in the wide open spaces of the outback. The “Musomagic” team has been working with the Tambo State School students for some years now, however this is the first time they have concentrated on a song about Tambo. Congratulations to all involved – it was fabulous.

It was indeed a pleasure to be part of the welcoming few who were at the Blackall airport to greet the flying representatives of the “Make A Wish Foundation Australia”, pilot Nick Clarke and Damon Fealy his very personable offsider. The foundation, established in 1980, makes funds available to children with life threatening illness to realize a “Wish” or a “Dream”. I understand that the first wish granted was to make a little boy a police officer. I was able to present a cheque for $1000, raised by the efforts of the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council staff and our communities, to swell the funds raised by councils all over Queensland to $38,000. I congratulate all who were involved with the “Bare Foot Bowls” events in both Blackall and Tambo, which raised the funds presented to this very worthy cause.

Economic Development Officer John Hine is happy to assist with applications to the “Farm Ready” program which can provide up to $80000 for groups of farmers to undertake projects that deliver tangible outcomes and develop strategies to assist members to adapt to climate change. He says they are practical techniques that will save people money and time, as well as improve productivity through better environmental management.

It is holiday time when there are a lot of things to do and places to see. Please travel safely, taking care to drive to the conditions of the roads. Ensure you have adequate water as the days are very dry and can be very torrid. Above all enjoy your holiday in our wonderful region.

There is a lot of talk about climate change and what we might need to do. According to Blackall-Tambo Regional Council’s Economic Development Officer John Hine, one sensible thing is to look at how businesses and households can save money by reducing electricity use.

“This does help in reducing emissions but in a practical sense can save money for everyone in the short term,” he said.

The Blackall Tambo Regional Council has arranged for Ergon Energy to give the region three staff for a week to help it identify simple, practical ways to help save money by reducing electricity use.

Beginning in the week of October 12, the Ergon Energy auditor will look at the council offices and depots, the aquatic centre, a range of businesses, including some rural ones, and several households with different structures and air conditioning types.

Businesses and households will be contacted shortly. Only a limited number of houses and businesses in the Blackall-Tambo region can be audited in the time available.

Other Ergon staff will organise workshops to let people know the ways that have been identified by which people can save money.

More information will be made available through the council website www.btrc.qld.gov.au.

The Queensland government has announced its 2009-10 arts and cultural development allocation for western Queensland.

The central west councils will receive about $143 000 of the $1.7M available statewide for the Regional Arts Development Fund, Premier Anna Bligh said this week.

Allocations include Blackall-Tambo $49 852, Barcaldine $22 500, Barcoo $17 550, Boulia $3600, Longreach $36 019 and Winton $13 500.

RADF is a partnership between Arts Qld and local councils to support the professional development and employment of arts workers in regional Queensland and allows councils to “shape arts and

cultural priorities in their own community,” Ms Bligh said.

Arts Queensland’s 2009 conference from Nov 18-20 will focus on the regional arts and the 2009 themes of: encouraging community participation and engagement through arts and culture; building strong communities; supporting vibrant regional arts and culture practice; and activating creative spaces.

A regional arts strategy will be launched at the conference, with policies and action plans to support the development of regional arts and culture from 2010 to 2014,” she said.

Full details of projects which can be funded by RADF are on the website: www.arts.qld.gov.au.

Blackall Combined Agents last week yarded a total of 3865 cattle at their fifth special weaner and store sale for the year. According to local agents, the special sale continues to prove its weight in gold.

“With the season remaining exceptionally dry in all areas, it is hard to imagine where the cattle numbers continue to be absorbed,” a spokesman said. “Undoubtedly last week the rates received at Blackall were the highest in the state.”

Police are urging motorists to take extra care on the roads after a fatality in the state’s central-west and two other car accidents over the weekend.

A 37 year old Tambo man was killed on Friday night near Tambo in a single-vehicle accident.

Police say he was driving on the Dawson Developmental Road when his utility left the road and veered into a dry creek bed. They say it appears the man wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.

On Sunday afternoon two women were treated for minor injuries at the Winton Hospital after their vehicle rolled on the Jundah-Winton Road. They were found by a passing motorist who called for an ambulance.

And also over the weekend a Winton man lost control of a car on the Landsborough Highway west of Longreach. He was also found by a passing motorist who took

him to the Longreach Hospital. The injured man’s been charged with disqualified driving.

Sergeant Wayne Lynn from Longreach police said there would be extra officers patrolling the roads over the next fortnight.

He says the spate of car crashes is not a good way to begin the holiday period.

“That’s why we see all the publicity on the radio and the TV in relation to all the school holiday traffic and what we have on now is what we call Operation Spring Break and it goes right through until the 5th of October,”he said.

Two hundred and sixty-three people have died so far this year on Queensland’s roads - 21 more than last year. Originally broadcast on ABC

Frankie Calleja, who is no stranger to the women of Blackall, has taken up a Queensland Health appointment as Director of Nursing at the Blackall Hospital.

Frankie spent four years from 2004 to 2007 working as the mobile women’s health nurse for the Longreach district.

“I was attracted to Blackall as it was one of my favourite clinic locations and it’s such a lovely town and friendly community,” she said, explaining her move here in June.

“I wanted to be back in familiar territory with a supportive team to take on such a big role with so much for me to learn.

“We have excellent facilities available and a great team, many visiting specialists to our district, and are serviced so well.”

Frankie has had a varied career, graduating as one of the first nurses from James Cook University in 1992 and working fulltime for the last 18 years.

Frankie has worked at Ayr, Home Hill and her home town of Innisfail, as well as Woorabinda.

She completed midwifery training at Toowoomba Base Hospital and then two years doing rural and remote locums at Stanthorpe, Cunnamulla, Thargomindah and Ingham hospitals.

She gained further experience from a number of positions in emergency departments around the state.

Frankie said that Blackall’s 18 bed acute facility was driven by Queensland Health’s quality improvement processes to improve services to clients dependent on their identified needs.

Megan and Matt tie the knot

On Saturday, 12 September local girl Megan Prow married Matthew Gane who moved to Blackall from the Atherton Tablelands in 2005.

The ceremony was held by Marilyn Hobbs at the Blackall Woolscour, and was followed by the reception at the Blackall Cultural Centre.

130 guests were in attendance to help the couple celebrate, with friends and relatives travelling from as far away as Geraldton, WA and Weipa and the Atherton Tablelands.

Gumby Chapman’s winning run came to an end last Sunday at the hands of Tex Hayward in the Handicap Singles Final.

In a good final, the games were close at 20-17 after 23 ends and then 29-25 on 34 ends. Tex then picked up two shots on the next end to win 31-25.

In the Trebles, Martin McKellar with subs Roy Black and Col Pfingst were no match for Ron Robinson, Mitchell Pfingst and Don Daly losing by 18-9.

There are no championship bowls this weekend due to most players travelling to Quilpie for the Trebles competition. Anyone wishing to play social bowls will be catered for with a 9am start.

The front entrance of the Blackall Arts Centre has received some long overdue maintenance work and is looking very inviting. Builder John Henderson has been working for many months repairing the courtyard, renewing verandahs and steps and his work is now complete.

The men from the local WORC camp have been painting the Centre. Long overdue for maintenance and repair work, the Centre looks fresh and inviting.

All of the work that been undertaken at the Arts Centre has been made possible by the Queensland Government, thanks to a Gritty Places Grant for which the Association is very grateful.
