SPORT ON THE BARCOOMagpies put on good show

Friday evening saw the start of the Blackall Magpies Footy Season with a trial match against the Barcaldine Sand Goannas at the Blackall Showgrounds.

A minute’s silence was held in remembrance for past president Gwynne Stockwell before the start of an entertaining game of football broken up into 20 minute quarters.

Barcaldine settled into the game well and at the end of the first quarter led 18-0. Thanks to some fine backline movements Blackall players started full of enthusiasm but took some time to find their feet.

The second quarter saw some good hard defence and attack by both sides with Blackall’s Tom Reddy crossing wide out to make the half time score 18-4.

The third quarter produced opportunities for both sides to score points. However simple handling errors seem to start creeping into both side’s game. A dropped ball by Barcaldine saw Adrian Walker of Blackall score under the post and Matt McLane converting the try making the score 18-10.

The final quarter saw the Magpies attacking the Sand Goannas’ line on a number of occasions. Finally Kenny Grahame dived over and McLane converted to make the final score 18-16 with Barcaldine victors.

President Jeremy Barron appreciated the fact that Barcaldine had travelled over to give the Magpies a trial match.

He also welcomed the presence of Peter Hauff and the junior Magpies and their workers in the canteen, and the sponsors who are back on board this year.

Blackall had a good turnout of loyal supporters who turned up and supported the players, and they are now all keen to see the 2011 season get bigger and better.

The Blackall Magpies will travel to Longreach on April 16 for a double header which will see them play the Winton Devils.

-- Tony Hauff

Blackall Magpies to star on the small screen

Producer Shane Gaunt, presenter Ben Dobbin, camera man Chris Forsyth and sound guy David McGregor-Jones from The Footy Show after filming at the Magpies training on Tuesday night.

The Blackall Magpies were in the spotlight on Tuesday as the focus of a segment filmed by a visiting camera crew from Channel Nine’s The Footy Show.

Producer Shane Gaunt, presenter Ben Dobbin, cameraman Chris Forsyth and sound guy David McGregor-Jones visited Ilfracombe and Blackall to film segments about rugby league teams in outback Queensland.

During their visit to Blackall, the crew filmed footage at the Jackie Howe Centre, the Black Stump, the Woolscour, the Blackall Magpies’ training session and the Prince of

Wales Hotel. At the training session Ben

Dobbin donned a Magpies jersey to give the team some unusual coaching as part of the light-hearted segment.

Shane Gaunt said the show chose to film a segment about the Blackall Magpies because of the story of how the club did not have a team for many years, while the Ilfracombe Scorpions were selected as the original club of North Queensland Cowboys player Matt Scott.

Mr Gaunt said it was extremely interesting to visit western

Queensland and the crew was enjoying their time in Blackall.

“The locals here are extremely accommodating and so respectful with what we want to do with the filming,” Mr Gaunt said.

“We really enjoy coming out to these country towns.”

Blackall was initially suggested as a location for a segment by new presenter Ben Dobbin, a Condamine local with contacts across rural Queensland.

The segment will air within the next few weeks with an exact broadcast date yet to be decided.

From the Editor

Autumn is definitely here with the mornings much cooler. The days however are just beautiful.

Banksia and Mulberry are the new Blackall street names which have been given to two unnamed Streets in the Industrial Estate. The unnamed street adjacent to Salvia Street will be named Magnolia Street in keeping with the tradition of plant names for streets in Blackall. The unnamed roads in the subdivision on the Ravensbourne Road will be Frames Lane and Glenora Lane.

A Remote Area Planning and Development Board Meeting held via teleconference held on Friday morning and a Blackall Tambo Wild Dog Advisory Meeting held via video link in the afternoon ensured the end of the week was as busy as the beginning.

There has certainly been a variety of events to attend in both Blackall and Tambo. A seminar and information day regarding breast cancer and related women’s health issues was held last weekend, supported by The Breast Cancer Association of Queensland and our own West’n Breast Support Group. Survivorship Issues involved many high level medical

practitioners along with associated health workers who were able to advise western women on their personal issues. A gourmet lunch and a lot of laughter topped off a really great day.

The Tambo Historical Group were able to showcase their recent work which was to give a make over to the heritage buildings, the old Tambo post office, Mulhern house and the Tambo Court House. The group will man the buildings during the tourist Season and give historical information. I have to congratulate the Tambo Historical Group on their enterprise as there are a growing number of motor homes and vans on the Landsborough Highway right now.

On Tuesday morning I was

fortunate enough to be able to attend the Blackall State School annual Butterfly Day for the girls from Year Seven through to Year Twelve. There were a number of workshops to attend on makeup, grooming, cookery and self esteem. The presentation featuring the female teachers and school support staff was very well received as was the workshop on the dangers of social networks. A gourmet lunch was served featuring dishes with an Asian theme, congratulations to the chef and her helpers. The table settings were very feminine as were the hall decorations. A special treat was the laser skirmish action which was set up in Memorial Park. Congratulations to Linda Whysall and to the teaching staff on what could only be called a very special day in any girl’s life.

The columbarium at the Blackall Cemetery is in place and landscaping and finishing off will ensure the site will be of a suitable standard to complement the existing facilities.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK

The year is getting busier and busier by the week, and I greatly appreciate all the information that everyone is sending me. It really makes the paper that much better and more interesting.

With Easter just around the corner and tourist season fast approaching, the calendar is filling up. With that in mind, I’d like to remind everyone to give me ample notice of your events and news. It’s always nice to include

photos with stories, but that sometimes can’t happen without prior organisation.

Similarly, if your organisation is holding an event I can’t attend, it’s fantastic to receive information and photos from someone who was there.

We have two colour issues coming up in the near future so advertisers should get in touch as early as possible to book their adspace. The first colour issue will

hit the shelves on Thursday April 21, the day before Good Friday.

The week after Easter there will be no paper, due to the number of public holidays that week.

The week after however, Blackall will be treated to another colour paper on May 6.

Advertisers during these weeks should be aware of a $65 colour surcharge to cover the cost of colour printing.

Visiting priests get taste of westBlackall had some visitors from

overseas to share in some western Queensland hospitality this week.

Catholic missionary priests Fr Marcel, Fr Thadayoose, and Fr John belong to the Heralds of Good News Missionary Society from the Mother Theresa Province, India.

The priests are visiting western areas of the Rockhampton Catholic diocese before they are appointed to a parish within the diocese for the six year duration of their missionary experience.

They have travelled north to Mackay and south to Bundaberg and now are in the western parts of the diocese for a few days to familiarise themselves with this area.

Brian Heenan, bishop of Rockhampton, will appoint them

later in the year to a parish where they are needed.

After travelling to Barcaldine they continued on their journey to Blackall and gathered with members of the Anglican, Uniting and Catholic communities to share in an ecumenical bible reflection for Lent.

Local ministers Rev Beth O’Neill, Rev Scott Ballment and Fr Matthew Moloney gathered with parishioners and welcomed them with a cup of tea and shared in their stories.

Later that day renowned local fisherman Br Terry Kingston led them to the Barcoo River to share in a little recreational fishing. Alas his reputation was not as good as it has been recently as there was no yellow-belly to be caught

this day. Well known local Marie Messer even went as a support and advisor but still no yellow-belly to be seen.

A few “Barcoo Grunter” were caught however and with some local mutton chops, lunch and billy-tea was served.

Fathers Marcel, John, and Thadayoose have been staying at St Patrick’s with Fr Matthew and will share in an anointing mass on Friday with the students of St Joseph’s and local parishioners.

After celebrating weekend mass on Saturday evening in Blackall and then mass on Sunday in Tambo, they will journey back to Rockhampton for the “Mass of the Holy Oils” and the next stage in their introduction to the diocese.

A new exhibition will open at the Grasslands Art Gallery in Tambo from April 27, showcasing paintings by Gladstone artist Melanie Jai.

Through the Looking Glass is Ms Jai’s artistic attempt to understand and portray the inner world of her autistic son.

Ms Jai said she hopes her paintings will inspire understanding, compassion and acceptance for those affected by mental health issues.

“Each artwork tackles a base emotion that we all experience at some time, the difference being that Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) sufferers experience these strong emotions all the time,” said Ms Jai.

“This has become my inspiration,

my vessel through which to feel what my son feels, to attempt to understand his world.”

Exhibitions manager Mia Kempel said that by focussing on child-like subjects such as Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, puppets and dolls, the works evoke an imagined adventure trail of Ms Jai’s son’s experiences.

“By using a highly stylised portraiture, Melanie connects with the fairytale land of villains and heroes that her son so often retreats to,” said Ms Kempel.

The exhibit will run until May 13, and is presented by the Tambo Arts Council and Queensland Arts Council and supported by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation.

Blackall students get taste of agricultural life

High school students from Blackall State School had the opportunity to attend the Australian Agricultural College in Longreach last week as part of the school’s agricultural program.

Twenty students visited the college as part of the Rural Vocations Pathways program held at the college.

The students stayed in residential accommodation at the college during the week and participated in activities such as horse mustering, farm machinery education, first aid and workplace health and safety.

The school will hold four visits to the Longreach pastoral college throughout the year for students studying agricultural certificates, with one week-long visit per term.

The students who visited the college are currently undertaking

either a Certificate I in Rural Operations, or a Certificate II in Agriculture.

Principal Jason Smith said the students greatly enjoyed the opportunity to participate in the practical activities held over the week.

“We think it’s a vital part of education, and we fully support students who are interested in pursuing agricultural careers,” Mr Smith said.

Physical education teacher Mr Ossipow accompanied the students on the visit and said the trip renewed the students’ interest in the agricultural sector.

“They all had a fairly good time, were excited about it and I think the college worked them pretty hard during the week,” Mr Ossipow said.

Former Blackall resident Bob Fallis caught up with next door neighbour Meg Irvine this week while on a tour of the Woolscour.

Bob was a member of a 45-person tour of western Queensland being undertaken by the Mackay Rural Production Group, which has been in operation and undertaking fact finding tours for 38 years.

The group toured the Woolscour while in Blackall and enjoyed a camp oven dinner afterwards, and

heard about Blackall’s industries from Simon and Christine Campbell and Sally Cripps.

Bob’s family used to own a dairy in Blackall and Fallis’s Crossing, a dry weather Barcoo River crossing at the end of Daisy Street, is named after the family.

Bob enjoyed seeing the many changes that had taken place in Blackall.

Blackall and Tambo youth will soon have new places to hang out, with the development of new youth centres for each of the towns.

The Blackall centre was funded by the Community Gambling Benefit fund and will be located in rooms below the Memorial Hall.

The centre will feature a technology space with computers, a media room with a television and DVD player, an air hockey table and a pool table.

The Tambo youth centre will be located in the front rooms of the Tambo Shire Hall, with a technology space, pool table and

board games. The centres are scheduled to

open within six months, and will initially be open for one day a week.

Blackall Tambo Regional Council sports and recreation officer Lisa Goodman said the new youth centres address the need to provide more services for youth in the district.

“It’s just giving them a space to be themselves and allowing them a leadership role to have some say in what they want from the centres,” Lisa said.

A panel of speakers that would be held in high regard in international circles brought an audience of 80 much needed information when the Breast Cancer Association of Queensland held its annual seminar at Blackall on the weekend.

Dr Shireen Senewiratne, who undertakes more immediate breast reconstructions than any other surgeon in Queensland, said she was amazed at how far people had travelled to attend.

People came from beyond Longreach and from around Alpha as well as from Blackall, Tambo and Isisford areas.

She said that although the seminar was different to the way the subject was approached in a city, the concerns were much the same.

Dr Chris Pyke, a specialist in breast endocrine surgery, said he and fellow specialists were very aware they were not offering the full service to their patients.

In response to a question about whose role it was to talk to patients about follow-up, Dr Pike said it used to be the surgeon who was the gatekeeper but a multi-disciplinary care approach was used now.

“The awkward thing is that you feel no-one is in charge anymore,” he said. “I would probably say the doctor or person you feel you have the best relationship with should be the one.”

Speakers were also questioned about genetic factors and were given a link to a National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre website that calculates the risk - http://www.nbocc.org.au/risk/yourrisk.html

Regular exercise was promoted as one of the effective ways of reducing the risk of getting breast cancer.

“Walking for an hour a few days a week will help a lot,” Dr Pyke said.

Lymphoedema, physiotherapy, psychiatric and sexuality issues were also covered comprehensively by speakers.

Heather Morton, who is the organiser for the regional West’n’Breast support group, said the day had helped make breast cancer sufferers and their families more aware of the issues surrounding diagnosis and recovery.

“They were all subjects and experts we don’t have access to easily,” she said.

Heather also felt the day had helped to spotlight the West’n’Breast group for local people.

“When we went through all this, there was nothing for people.

“We’re not counsellors but we can share our experiences, which we feel can help.”

The group also makes up pamper packs and raises money to assist women with their costs.

Heather said there was a contact person for every town in the west.

“The number of women recently diagnosed is scary. I would just like to say to people, be kind to yourself and others.”

There was a positive atmosphere at the Blackall Cultural Centre on Tuesday with Blackall State School’s second annual Butterfly Day.

The day aims to build self esteem among girls from Year Seven to Twelve and featured a range of workshops, activities and inspirational talks.

The theme of the day was “Free to be me” and the event was held in the Blackall Cultural Centre which was decorated for the occasion in shades of pink and purple with balloons and butterfly motifs.

The day kicked off with a talk about healthy relationships from Charleville’s Grace Ironside, who

was on reality television show World’s Strictest Parents last year.

The girls then enjoyed a morning tea of butterfly cakes and fresh fruit before launching into a series of rotational workshop activities.

One group of students learnt about hair, makeup and skincare, while another learnt about healthy relationships with the final group assisting to prepare a healthy lunch with chicken noodle salad and spring rolls.

After lunch the students got to participate in laser skirmish and mosaic art workshops.

Students also watched a video consisting of motivational

messages from the female teachers and staff.

A live butterfly release was scheduled to finish out the day, but had to be postponed when the butterflies were not delivered on time.

School chaplain Linda Whysall said the day was one that the girls really looked forward to and attracted a lot of community support and sponsorship.

“The support really shows the girls how much the community is behind them and willing to believe in them and all of that is a great message for the girls,” Linda said.
