The public transport in Nitra dates back to the year 1866 when the first omnibus served as the only kind of public transport. It was a carriage drawn by horses.
1922-1925 – era of Omnibuses.
The first bus in Nitra was Ford. It was a private bus. People liked it.
In 1948 – the private buses were canceled. The urban public transport arose. At that time, there were 5 buses and in 1950 7 buses.
1987 – 1990 - Nitra was considering the construction of tram lines.Later that idea failed due to the severe financial difficulties.
One of the most important parts of public transport in the past was railway. There is a narrow gauge railway in the open air museum Agrokomplex.
Public transport in Nitra city is highly developed at the
present time. Modern buses are more
comfortable, safer and quicker.

The history of railway station in Nitra dates back to the second half of the nineteenth
century.
The main building was built around 1876, and extended with train dispatcher offices in 1921. Nowadays design of the building dates back to 1925, after the electrification of the station
was finished.
Nitra does not belong to main railroads and the significance of railway transport is only
regional.
There is a tourist train which is called “Nitra Express“. It operates from April to
September. The length of the route from Svätopluk square to the castle and back is 5
km. It lasts 45 minutes with 15 minutes break.
