Short Bio Dr. Mary F Barbe graduated with my PhD in Anatomy from Wake Forest University, Bowman Gray School of Medicine, Winston Salem, NC in 1987. She then completed a three-year postdoctoral fellowship under Dr. Pat Levitt at Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. She is currently a Full Professor at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia PA. Her main research focus is on: 1) the effect of repetition and force on musculoskeletal and neural systems, and their interaction in a unique rat model of work-related musculoskeletal disorder (also known as repetitive strain injury) with neurological dysfunction that matches that of carpal tunnel syndrome; and 2) examining tissue and cellular responses after spinal root/cord injury, with the goal of developing feasible ways of reinnervating the bladder and other urinary structures after denervation using nerve transfer techniques. She is currently funded by NIAMS (National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases) and NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) for these projects. In addition to these projects, Dr. Barbe is Associate Chair of the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Director of the MicroCT core, Director of the Shared Imaging Facility, and Co-Leader of CNAC Basic Science Core II (Animal models, Behavioral Testing, Pathology and Histology Core). She has recently rotated off serving as a grant review member of the Somatosensory and Chemosensory Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, and has recently served (or is serving) as an ad hoc grant reviewer for the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology, the Musculoskeletal, Oral and Skin Sciences (MOSS) IRG, and the American Institute of Biological Sciences (part of the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC)).
