Who were the Barbarians?

The term "Barbarian" is Greek in origin. TheGreeks originally levied it at any races who werenot of Greek extraction; especially those whothreatened Greek civilization andculture. Originally applied to the Persianinvaders under Artaxerxes and Darius, theGreeks later referred to the invading peoples ofNorthern Europe as "barbarians."

Their Hair

They had long barbaric hair, it was messy

and not well kept.

As a strategic maneuver against enemies,they would grease their hair with butter.

What they wore

The Barbarians had a hard life.

The Climate was rough.

They had scarce supplies, thus theminimal clothing that they wore

Running around barefoot was often anecessity

During Winter they wore animal skinaround their backs and shoulders to keepwarm.

Fact.

It is often believed that the Barbarians were

more uncivilized and rougher than the Greeks

and the Romans, BUT, one must not mistaken

their illiteracy for their innocence.

Just like the Romans & Greeks, the Barbarians

were known for their lavish banquets, only, the

Barbarians banquets were more innocent and

mild then those of the civilized Romans and

Greeks

How they got their Bad Reputation?

History has shown the

barbarians to be

civilized & far from the

uncultured stereotypewith which they have

been portrayed. They

have also been

shown to have beenstrong family. So how

did they get a bad

reputation?

Family life

Marriage and Courtship The Barbarians didnt decide marriage anydifferent than the Indians do today. EitherParents decided the match, or it was decided by

the bride and the groom themselves. Nomadic Barbarians such as Goths and Celts

were prone to a marriage tradition calledcapture.

women could also follow the same tradition topick the man she wanted called netting

Only a few Barbarians could read and writetherefore, they were unable to keep a writtenrecord of their history, unlike the Greeks andRomans who made it a point to account their

history for their ascendants. Therefore, all the information about the

Barbarians were tales passed around by theword of mouth.

If asked a Roman or a Greek, they would speakno good of the Barbarians, and why should they,considering the Barbarians participated inmaking their Empire fall.

Marriage for the NOBLE

Marriage was mostly

arranged unless of

extreme situations.

Marriage was usuallytaken place between

age 14-17 years old.

Unlike the Romans

and Greeks, theBarbarians strongly

believed in

Monogamy.

Barbarians Pass Times

During the months of summer (May-October),

barbarians were much more industrious,involved with raiding and protectingagainst raids, farming, crafting weaponsand other implements, hunting, and

fishing. Swimming and outdoor gameswere typically the way that the barbariansrelaxed during the long days of summer.

Pass Times During Winter

During the frigid monthsof the dark Northernwinter (November-April),activities were far morecurtailed. Barbarianstended to spend far muchmore of their time indoorsduring this time, andother than eating andsleeping, they had to

have a way to keepthemselves occupied.Such as Gaming,Lapidary (JewelleryMaking) and Story Telling
