History

During World War I, the families from the island of Cuyo headed by the family Llanera

and family Cabrestante left their municipality due to hardship suffered caused by the Spaniards.

As they travelled through their sailing boat, they saw a beautiful island. Enthralled with its

beauty, they stepped over and cleared the vicinity and later they decided to settle in the place.

While clearing the area, they named this new found place “Lagundi”- a kind of herb

abundant in the place. As the years passed by, more people came and settle in this place.

During World War II some Japanese also visited the place and called the place little

Tokyo because they almost outnumbered the Filipinos. Since this place had been visited by the

Spaniards who spread Christianity, majority of the inhabitants are catholic up to this day.

In 1905 they changed the name of this place from Lagundi to San Miguel in honor to

their patron saint Saint Michael Archangel. His feast is celebrated every September 28-29.
