was a white woman from Kansas. His parents met while attending theUniversity of Hawaii. Barack was twoyears old when his parents separated.His father moved back to Kenya. His mother married a man fromIndonesia. They had one daughter.Barack moved to Indonesia with hismom, stepfather, and half-sister. He was six years old.

Barack graduated from ColumbiaUniversity in 1983. He studied politics.He also studied how the United Statesworks with other countries. Barackbegan working for an Americancompany that did business with othercountries. He decided to move toChicago in 1985. happened to him while at Harvard. Hemet a lawyer named Michelle Robinson.They fell in love. They were married in1992. They have two daughters, Maliaand Natasha. He became the firstAfrican American president of theHarvard Law Review. It is an importantjournal written by students.

Barack graduated from Harvard in1991. He graduated with honors. This was a great accomplishment! He moved back to Chicago. He becamevery busy. He encouraged people tovote. He worked for a law firm thathelped protect people’s rights. He alsobegan teaching law at a college.

In 1996 Barack became even busier. He was electedan Illinois statesenator! Whilesenator, heraised funds tohelp families whodid not makemuch money. He also worked

to help poor families afford to go tothe doctor.

In 2000 Barack ran for the U.S. House of Representatives. He didnot win the election. He ran for statesenate again in 2002 and won. In 2004Illinois voters elected him to the U.S. Senate. He was the only AfricanAmerican person serving in the U.S. Senate. He was only the fifth black U.S. senator ever! He has proposedmany new laws. He proposed

legislation that would help end the Iraq War. He also wanted to pass lawsthat would help poor Americans gethelp when they are sick.

In 2004 Barack gave a speech ontelevision. It was at a meeting calledthe Democratic National Convention.He told Americans that it wasimportant to get along with oneanother. Many politicians and otherpeople liked what he said. He decidedto run for president of the UnitedStates. In 2008, Americans electedBarack as the first African Americanpresident! And in 2009, PresidentObama won the Nobel Peace Prize!
