Lecturer biography Vincent H. Resh has been a professor of Environmental Science, Policy & Management at theUniversity of California, Berkeley, since 1975. Professor Resh has been an adviser to United Nations' agencies for over 20 years in evaluating human impacts on water resources in developing countries in Asia and Africa. He was the senior environmental consultant to the Mekong River Commission for over 10 years, and has advised the governments of Thailand,Bali, and Singapore on water issues. He also serves on various science advisory boards in California. He received theUniversity of California’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1995 and has taught about issues related to water and the environment to over 20,000 Berkeley undergraduates.

Excursion: Balinese Life. Spend the daylearning about daily life on the island of Bali.Visit a local school to meet the students andtheir teachers. Also, visit a traditional Balinese housing compound to observe the local lifestyle and traditional activities. Continue to the rice fields to learn aboutsubak, an ancient irrigation system still in usetoday. This cooperative system is more than ameans to water fields. It is an extension oftemple culture. If you wish, you can try yourhand at planting or harvesting rice. If youchoose, surrender your feet to a traditionalBalinese foot massage, a relaxing experience.

in Tampak Siring where the water from a bubbling spring is believed to have healingpowers. The temple, built in 926, features two bathing pools where the Balinese hold purification ceremonies. Continue to the Sacred Monkey Forest of Padangtegal near the village of Ubud to see the long-tailedmacaques who live in this rain forest and tolearn about this sacred area. Conclude with avisit to Ubud’s famous market, where you willfind batiks and other textiles, silver jewelry,woodwork and other traditional crafts. Local Flavor: Enjoy a lunch of Balinese cuisine in Ubud.This evening, gather with your fellow travelersto bid farewell to Bali at a Farewell Dinner.Day Thirteen b

American architect Jim Thompson, whoworked for U.S. intelligence during World War II, settled in Bangkok after the war. He becamecaptivated by Thai culture and arts. With acharismatic personality and a keen eye for colorand design, Thompson introduced the world to Thailand’s silk industry and helped countlessvillagers in the process.

Over some 20 years, “the best known foreigner in Bangkok” became an authority on Thai art, built a unique home that attractedluminaries and ushered in new dyes to createthe brightly colored silks we see today.

The Silk King with CIA connections disappeared in the Malaysian jungle while vacationing with friends over Easter weekend in 1967. Despite extensive investigations, hisdisappearance remains a mystery.
