I would not like to comment on it,” he said. Kambar said the state gov- ernment should work hard to- wards getting classical status to Kannada, which has been pend- ing for a long time now. “Kan- nada deserves the classical sta- tus. Everyone should put in their efforts towards that,” he said. He said Kannada should be taught compulsorily at all schools from first to tenth stan- dards. “Only then will Kannada grow. "We have conveyed to the US that you will lose an ally. You cannot afford to alienate Pakistan, you cannot afford to alienate the Pakistani people," she said, adding "If they are choosing to do so, it will be at their own cost." Khar's remarks came a day after US military chief Admiral Mike Mullen accused the ISI of support- ing the Haqqani network in carrying out a string of deadly terror attacks, including an assault on the US Embassy in Kabul on September 13. He said the Haqqani network, a powerful fac- tion of the Taliban, was a "veritable arm" of Pak- istan's spy agency. Mullen's tough words marked the first time a US official had linked ISI directly to these terror groups, signaling a significant change in the American approach to Islamabad. The Pakistan Foreign Minister, who is in New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, told Geo News channel that though militants based in Afghanistan had carried out cross-bor- der attacks on Pakistan, Islamabad had not re- sorted to a blame game even though US forces are responsible for security on the Afghan side. It is in the interest of both Pakistan and the US to retain their relationship, Khar said. "So, if it is not a relationship of complete equals, them being a superpower and us not, but it is (a relationship) of sovereign equals." Both countries need each other and Pakistan wants its relationship with the US to remain intact, she said. But Pakistan?s sovereignty must be re- spected by the US, she added. Pakistan is fighting the war on terror in its own interest and the US may be a superpower but Pak- istan is not dependent on it alone, Khar contended. "Our Pakistani brothers and sisters should know that their country is not dependent on America, there is no economic or military de- pendency. Assistance has been coming from them and we would want this aid to come in a bet- ter way," she said. Recessionary trend inUS likely to impact IndiaBangalore: India is likely tosuffer a significant slowdown inexports, higher interest rates, in-stability in financial markets, in-creased unemployment and low-er growth should the US go intoa recession, according to a newreport by consultancy firm De-loitte.

Along with global integration, dependence of the Indian econ-omy on the US has grown, as isevident from the fact that theUS is the second-favourite des-tination for exporters and thethird-largest source of FDI inflowsin India, Deloitte’s ‘D’conomics’report said.

“With such deep interconnect-edness through trade, financeand confidence channels, itwould be naive to presume thatIndia will be unaffected by thedevelopments in the US econo-

my,” the report said. With a high degree of global

financial integration, any reduc-tion in US balance of trade wouldhave negative effects on manycountries. A depreciated dollarwould diminish the value of re-serves held by various countries, including India.

This would also impact theimport capabilities of variouscountries, as their import appetitewould be dependent on the USdollar, as well as the value of in-ternational forex reserves.

“However, it is possible thatthe buoyancy in agricultural sec-tor growth, major infrastructureinvestments, improvements inmanufacturing sector yields andthe robust services sector mayhelp India weather the negativerepercussions that may arisefrom the US,” the report said.

The report also indicates In-dia?s global competitiveness issuffering while other countriesare effectively eating into India’sglobal share of world trade.

Recently concluded trade andeconomic cooperation agree-ments with Singapore, Japanand Malaysia and Free TradeAgreement with ASEAN are im-portant steps for Indian busi-nesses to capitalise upon andimprove productivity such thatthe economy can continue to ex-pand its productive capacity, itwas stated.

The report concluded the timeis right to frame policies and re-main optimistic about economicprospects as building and restor-ing consumer confidence is crit-ical to avoid the consequence ofa prolonged economic slowdown.PTI

RCB keen to start on positivenote; end trophy drought

Bangalore: Having comepretty close to winning inthe IPL on two occasions,Royal Challengers Banga-lore will be desperate toclinch a major champi-onship title when they be-gin their campaign in theChampions League Twen-ty20 against Warriors at theM Chinnaswamy stadiumhere today.

“We don’t have a trophyyet. But we have the guysin form and I hope we cango all the way this time,”said AB de Villiers, echoingthe sentiment of the seniorpros in the team.

The franchisee has de-manded dividends for theirhuge investment but some-how RCB have not been able todeliver the much-sought aftersilverware.

Finishing runner-up is notwhat Vijay Mallya would like.

There will be pressure onDaniel Vettori and gold and red-clad legion to lay their handson the elusive title.

There are quite a few stars inthe RCB ranks, including themarauding West Indian ChrisGayle who had set the standsafire during the fourth editionof the IPL, but the team will cer-tainly miss the services of theIndian pacer Zaheer Khan.

The dreaded and shrewd left-arm seamer has been under re-habilitation since breaking downduring the first Test against Eng-land at Lord’s in July.

Apart from Vettori, the vastly

improved Sreenath Arvaind andAbhimanyu Mithun would misstheir mentor in Zaheer. In manyways, Zaheer’s absence couldimpact RCB’s fortunes in the fort-night-long T20 bash.

Unlike RCB, who fit into theCLT20 as a club outfit, the JohanBotha-led Warriors have the ad-vantage of playing as a provincialunit.

Vettori admitted that the lackof match practice, cohesion areissues to contend with at thestart of the tournament.

A defeat could dampen RCB’schances of qualifying for the titleround as every match is crucialin this format.

Man-to-man, Warriors are abetter side, with the nucleus ofthe South African national play-ers forming the core of this pow-

erful side. But Botha andhis accomplished Warriorswould be wary of the big-hitting Chris Gayle.

If the towering Jamaican, who is although desperatelyshort of match practice, getscracking, the Warriors couldbe blown over the IndianOcean.

Tillakartane Dilshan, whoarrived last night, and DeViliers can also be ruthlesson their day, but Gayle is ofanother league when itcomes to power batting. Theleft hander can be brutallyaggressive.

No bowler would like tobowl at him when he is infull flow. RCB would be hop-ing that he does just what

he did in the last edition of theIPL.

The contest might well be be-tween Gayle and the Warriors.

Printer copier, multifunction product market shrinks by 0.8%

Bangalore: The combined serialinkjet and page printer, copierand multifunction product (MFP)market in India totalled 666,859units in the second quarter of2011, a 0.8 per cent decline vis-a-vis the same period of the pre-vious calendar year, accordingto research firm Gartner, Inc.

Some of the ripples causedby uncertainty in the global econ-omy, primarily on account of the

downgrade of the US sovereignrating and European debt crisis, found their way to the Indianeconomy, Gartner said, assertingthat as a result, economic activ-ities slowed down slightly andprinter equipment purchases asa discretionary spend were af-fected. The unprecedented highinflation in the country also af-fected consumer spending onprint devices.

“Overall, HP, Canon, Samsung, and Epson continued to be thetop four vendors, accounting for92 per cent of the total Indiaprinter market in the secondquarter of 2011,” said Gartnerresearch analyst Amrita Choud-hury. HP maintained its leader-ship position in the India printer, copier and MFP market, account-ing for 53.1 per cent of shipments, followed by Canon with 22.9 per

cent, Samsung with 8.5 per centand Epson with a 7.7 per centmarket share.

In the A4 MFP segment also,HP was the market leader witha 58.3 per cent share, followedby Canon with 20.7 per cent,Samsung with 7.4 per cent andEpson with a 5.3 per cent shareof the market in the second quar-ter of 2011 were the other topvendors in the segment. PTI

Ask Somasekharto quit as KMFchief, say NGOs

Bangalore: Two non-governmen-tal organisations yesterday urgedKarnataka chief minister D VSadananda Gowda to removethe “tainted” Somashekhar Red-dy from the chairmanship of Kar-nataka Milk Federation (KMF)and initiate criminal proceedingsagainst him for illegal miningas per the second Lokayukta re-port.

“In fact, Somasekhara Reddyhad laid the foundation for car-rying out illegal mining activitiesin Bellary and Sandur areas ...Therefore he must be removedand initiate criminal proceedingsagainst him,” National Commit-tee for Protection of Natural Re-sources (NCPNR) convenor S RHiremath told reporters here.

Somashekhar Reddy is abrother of former Karnataka min-ister and mining baron G Ja-nardhana Reddy, now in CBIcustody.

NCPNR, along with Jana San-gram Parishat (JSP) are pressingfor the removal of Reddy fromthe chairman’s post at KarnatakaMilk Federation (KMF), he said.

He urged the state governmentto take action against 700 offi-cials, including the then Bellarydeputy conservator of forests SMuthaiah for allegedly colludingwith illegal miners.

“Irrefutable evidence” of il-legal mining and gross abuseof power by Somasekhar Reddyhas been established in the sec-ond Lokayukta report submittedby Justice Santosh Hegde, hesaid.

The report confirms the “high-handed” behaviour of So-mashekhar Reddy trying to in-fluence officials so as to carryout illegal mining activities inBellary district, he claimed.

The report also “confirms theaudacity of Somashekhar Red-dy” to ask a senior investigatingofficer whether he had the per-mission of district in-charge min-ister (Gali Janardhan Reddy) toenter Bellary, Hiremath said.

Somashekhar Reddy had“misused his powers” to get hisname deleted from the complaintlodged by Ramalingaiah, a ge-ologist in the office of the deputy

director of mines and geology,he alleged.

“When Ramalingaiah cameacross cases of illegal mining,he was informed it was beingdone at Reddy’s behest,” Hire-math said, charging that the“inordinate delay” in completinginvestigation and chargesheetingSomashekhar Reddy shows the“high-handedness” of the stategovernment.

Hiremath also demanded thatCBI should probe alleged illegalmining done by the JanardhanReddy-owned Associated MiningCorporation (AMC).

“I am optimistic that SupremeCourt’s environment panel Cen-tral Empowered Committee (CEC)will plead for court-monitoredCBI enquiry into illegal miningcase,” he said.

Court-monitored CBI enquiryalone can lead to effective anddecisive action against influentialpoliticians and officials who ei-ther connived with the miningmafia and exhibited derelictionof duty by inaction, Hiremathsaid.

Earlier, NCPNR had urged theKarnataka government to ap-proach the Supreme Court andseek a court-monitored CBI en-quiry into illegal mining in thestate. PTI

BRICS to support global eco stability through IMF

Washington: The finance min-isters of BRICS countries Brazil,Russia, India, China and SouthAfrica yesterday said they areopen to the idea of providingsupport through the InternationalMonetary Fund (IMF) or otherfinancial institutions to addressglobal economic challenges.

“The BRICS are open to con-sider, if necessary, providing sup-port through the IMF or otherinternational financial institu-tions in order to address thepresent challenges to global fi-nancial stability, depending onindividual country circum-stances,” said a joint commu-nique issued by the BRICS fi-nance ministers after their meet-ing here.

“We underscored the contin-uing need to maintain interna-tional policy coordination andcoordination through the G-20,”said the communique issued onthe sidelines of the annual meet-ing of the International MonetaryFund and the World Bank.

“We also expressed our con-cern over the slow pace of quotaand governance reforms, includ-ing in the area of surveillance inthe IMF, and for the need formultilateral development banksto mobilise more resources forlow income and developingcountries,” finance ministerPranab Mukherjee told a crowdedpress conference addressed bythe BRICS finance ministers atIMF headquarters here.

Responding to questions,Mukherjee said the issue wasraised and the consensus was

that there should be serious ef-forts made by Europeans andothers of the international com-munity. . “BRIC will be part ofthat consensus building andBRICS will contribute its ownmight and its own contributionto resolve the crisis along withG-20 and other members of theinternational community,” hesaid. “We discussed in terms ofpreparation, in terms of mutualwork on those threats which weare facing. We are trying to escapethe use of words like aid assis-tance, so on and so forth. Wewill work on the issue togetherwith the European Union andbetween ourselves,” the RussianDeputy Finance Minister, SegeyStorchak, said.

“We must also move aheadwith the comprehensive reviewof the quota formula by January,2013, and the completion of thenext review of quotas by January,2014. This is needed to increasethe legitimacy and effectivenessof the fund,” the communiquesaid. “We reiterate our supportfor measures to protect the voiceand representation of the IMF’spoorest members. We call on theIMF to make its surveillanceframework more integrated andeven-handed,” it said.

While BRICS countries recov-ered quickly from the 2008-09global financial crisis, some ofthem are now grappling with in-flationary pressures and thegrowth prospects of all the coun-tries have been dampened byglobal market instability, thecommunique said.

“In advanced countries, thebuild-up of sovereign debt andconcerns regarding the mediumto long-term plans of fiscal ad-justment are creating an uncer-tain environment for globalgrowth.

“Also, excessive liquidity from

aggressive policy actions takenby central banks to stabilise theirdomestic economies has been spilling over into emergingmarket economies, fostering excessive volatility in capitalflows and commodity prices,” itsaid. PTI

Washington: Finance ministerPranab Mukherjee on Thurs-day warned the internationalcommunity that there is dan-ger of a currency war if theongoing economic crisis deep-ens.

Such a currency war canbe avoided through dialogueand not through competitivedevaluations, Mukherjeestressed at a crowded pressconference of finance ministersof BRICS nations Brazil, Rus-sia, India, China and SouthAfrica at the headquarters ofthe International MonetaryFund here.

“Yes, if the crisis deepensfurther and there is greatervolatility in financial flows, there is an increased risk ofthis (currency war) happen-ing,” Mukherjee said in re-sponse to a question.

“But our view is that if such

tensions arise, it should beeased through the dialogueand not through competitivedevaluations,” he said.

Mukherjee pointed out thecurrencies used in BRICS coun-tries should be widely appre-ciated and should be taken into account while de-termining the ingredients ofspecial drawing rights (SDR)maintained by the IMF, asthese nations’ contributionsto global output and the econ-omy is increasingly substan-tially.

“But we are not suggestingright now, because there aremany other factors whichought to be taken into account, including free convertibilityand other things which arenot uniform, but the impor-tance of these currencies hasincreased,” Mukherjee said inresponse to a question. PTI

Pvt sector has fostered historic India‑US trade ties: BurnsWashington: The private sectorin India and the United Stateshas succeeded in fostering his-toric trade relationships betweenthe two largest democracies ofthe world, a top Obama Admin-istration official said yesterday.

“Your companies and the pri-vate sectors they represent havesucceeded in fostering historictrade relations among our twocountries,” US Deputy Secretaryof State William Burns said inhis address to the US-India CEOForum meeting here.

“The CEO Forum is a uniquechannel that allows each of ourgovernments to hear from a di-verse representation of the privatesectors of both of our countries.

Your recommendations haveinformed us and challenged usto tackle the persistent hurdleswe oftentimes face in implement-ing our shared vision of evergreater US-India cooperation,”he said.

Created in July, 2005, and re-constituted in November, 2009,the CEO Forum is an initiativetaken up by the two governmentsand the private sector to enhancebilateral trade and investment.

The forum last met in Novem-ber, 2010, in New Delhi.

While the Indian CEOs wererepresented by Tata Group Chair-man Ratan Tata, those from theUS were led by Honeywell In-ternational Chairman David Cote.

“2010 was a record-breakingyear in US-India trade, with tradein goods up 30 per cent to a highof some USD 49 billion, movingIndia up two notches to becomeour 12th largest trading partner. This is excellent progress,” Burnssaid.

“But we all recognise that thepotential for our relationship isso much greater,” he added.

Burns said the two govern-ments have created and continueto create new opportunities forgreater interconnectedness be-tween the two economies, suchas the historic civil nuclear deal, the decision of President Obamato remove Indian governmententities from export control lists, the rapid growth in defence salesand cooperation, the Partnershipto Advance Clean Energy and abilateral aviation safety agree-ment.

“And as industry leaders, youcontinue to play a critical rolein highlighting the importanceof our ties to our two publicsand to the US Congress and In-

dian Parliament. Tens of thou-sands of jobs are created in theUnited States and surely as manyin India by our respective in-vestments in each other’seconomies.

This needs to be better un-derstood,” he said.

Observing that India is pro-jected to become the world’sthird-largest economy by 2030,Burns said to reach this goal,India will obviously need sus-tained growth over the comingyears and the US will have to bepart of that equation if India isto realise this potential.

“Prime Minister (Manmohan)Singh has remarked that US pros-perity is in India’s national in-terest and the same is also truefor us – India’s rise and its con-tinued economic growth is deeplyin the American national inter-est,” he said.

At this time of global economicanxiety, the two governmentsare committed to working to-gether in fora such as the G-20,where advanced economies andthose still emerging can learnfrom one another and can forgecoordinated responses to the challenges before them, hesaid. PTI
