Sharpe Last Thursday, the RCHS Concert Band trav- eled to Madison Central to compete in the District 11 KMEA Concert Band Fes- tival. This annual rite of spring involves many re- hearsals on two or three complicated pieces of mu- sic. The band is judged on their performance and then on a group sight reading. The sight reading entails playing a piece never seen before. This year the RCHS Concert Band prepared “River Wind” by Frank Erickson which featured Mackezie Craig soloing on horn, “Tocata” by Girolamo Frescobaldi which featured the woodwind section, and "In Flight” by Samuel R. Hazo featuring percussion- ists Jarrett Hamm and Dylan Hillard on snare and timpani solo. The RCHS Concert Band includes Seniors: Matt Fields (trombone), Mallory Harper (percussion), Dalton Hutton (alto saxophone), Elliot Jackson (percussion), Ethan Miller (trumpet), and Sarah Morgan (flute). Jun- iors: Mark Berry (trumpet), Megan Gray (percussion), Jarrett Hamm (percussion), Jake Mink (trombone), Kyle Shelton (percussion), Josh Stallsworth (tenor saxophone), and Will Walker(trumpet). Sopho- mores: Adam Alcorn (trum- pet), Michael Brewer (trom- bone), Sarah Burdine (per- cussion), Caleb Coffey (flute), Laiken Coffey (trumpet), Rylan Cromer (alto saxophone), Matt Gonzalez (baritone), Jamie Bands perform at KMEA Concert The RCHS Concert Band under the direction of Mr. Greg Daugherty. Kirby (flute), Hannah Tyler (clarinet), and Mary Weaver (tuba). Freshmen: Mackenzie Craig (french horn), Tyler Elam (percus- sion), Dalton Gray (clari- net), Jodi Hellard (flute), Austin Helton (alto saxo- phone), Dylan Hillard (per- cussion), Brandon McFerron (euphonium), Emily Mullins (clarinet), Jeffrey Rowe (percussion), Josh Smith (alto saxo- phone), David Wynn (trum- pet), and Derek Wynn (trumpet). 8th grade: Timmy Baugh (tuba), Shelby Brown (percussion), Allison Estes (trombone), Jessi Harris (oboe), Shanoah Shelton (clarinet),Sierra Smith (clarinet), Levi Sparks (trumpet), and Casey Walker (alto saxophone). The very next day, the RCMS Concert Band trav- eled to Madison Central for their competition. They also worked very hard preparing their pieces. They played “Reflections” by James Swearingen which featured Shelby Ponder on solo flute, and “Andromeda Overture” by Mark Williams which featured trumpet soloist Levi Sparks. The RCMS Concert Band includes: clarinetists - Kamryn Brinegar (7th), Adriana Damrell (8th), Sara Dawson (8th), Kristen Forrester (7th), Samarah Lovins (7th), Jessica Mason (7th), Amber Rice (7th), Faith Saylor (7th), Shanoah Shelton (8th), Sierra Smith (8th); cornetists: Heather Allen (7th), Dana Hatfield (7th), and Laney Poynter (7th); flutists: Rebecca Abrams (7th), Amelia Berryman (7th), Caitlin Daugherty (7th), Ericka Goodman (8th), Tiffany Horn (8th), Shelby Ponder (8th), and Krystal Smith (8th); on the french horn: Cassidy Adkins (8th)and Samuel Coffey (8th); on the oboe: Jessi Harris (8th); per- cussionists: Shelby Brown (8th), Austin Collins (8th), Rachael Davis (7th), Tommy Hurst (7th), Jay Imaide (7th); on the alto saxophone: Zeb Davis (7th), Aaron Pevley (7th), Bobby Prickett (7th), and Casey Walker (8th); on the tenor saxophone: Brooke Fields (8th); trombonists: Allison Estes (8th), Zach Hayes (8th) and Josh Neeley (8th); trumpeters Casey Chatelle (7th), Grant Mosley (8th) and Levi Sparks (8th); and on tuba: Timothy Baugh (8th). The RCHS Concert Band scored a high Profi- cient Plus in playing and a Distinguished in sight read- ing! Congratulations to all those who participated in the KMEA Concert Band Festival. You did well in representing Rockcastle! And special congratulations to the 8th graders who are members of both bands: Timmy Baugh (tuba), Shelby Brown (percussion), Allison Estes (trombone), Jessi Harris (oboe), Shanoah Shelton (clarinet),Sierra Smith (clarinet), Levi Sparks (trumpet), and Casey Walker (alto saxophone).. You worked hard! And on a special note I want to share with the band the compliments of Ms Julie Hamm, mother of Lady Rocket Holly Hamm. She was very grateful for the band’s support of the Lady Rockets during the 2011 season and tournaments. She felt that the experience would not have been the same without them and wanted the entire band to know how much they are appreciated. Go Rockets! Coming Events May-2011 Spring Con- cert Band Notes Fundraising is a neces- sary part of any band pro- gram to help offset the high costs and provide opportu- nities for all students who wish to be involved in the music programs here in Rockcastle. This Friday, April 1st – Theme Party. It will be held in the High School Cafete- ria at 6:00. Everyone is welcome! This event in- cludes dinner, auction, and entertainment! Monday, April 4th – Pizza Hut Night! Start plan- ning now to eat out. Whether dining in or carry- ing out, mention the band and you can know that you helped them out. April 16th – 2011 Main Street Car and Tractor Show. This event will take place at Mt. Vernon El- ementary with registration starting at 10:00am and awards at 2:00. DJ "Coun- try Charlie" Napier will be presiding and there will be food and fun for all! Come on out – there'll be trophies and door prizes galore! Six members of the Rockcastle Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution met with the Rockcastle County High School Book Club on March 25th. Each DAR member read a book chosen by the book club. Then each DAR member led a discussion with the group of students who had read the same book. Mrs. Laura Durham, retired librarian has arranged this activity with Mrs. Janet Wells, cur- rent librarian, for the last several years. Pictured seated: Laura Durham and Tonya Cook. This year, the banquet will be held Satur- day, April 23rd at 7 p.m. The classes of 36, 41, 46, 51, 56, 61, 66 and 71 will be honored. Please keep in mind that all graduates and all friends are welcome to attend and renew old friend- ships and relive old memo- ries. If your class would like to have a room to meet in prior to the banquet to just sit and talk, please call the school at 606-758-8512 and arrangements will be made.
