the SeaRch foR chametz - SUNdaY, aPRIl 9, 2017: a formal search for leaven (bedikat chametz) is conducted the night before pesach. this symbolizes the final removal of leaven (chametz) from the home. Before the search, it is customary to deposit small pieces of bread (ten pieces, according to kabbalistic lore) in strategic places so the inspection should have a purpose. it is traditionally carried out by candlelight, with a feather and a wooden spoon to collect the chametz. all this is set aside until morning. Why do we use a candle? “the spirit of man is the lamp of God, searching all the inward parts.”

Please return this form to: B’nai torah Congregation (attn: Elaine siegell) 6261 sW 18th street, Boca raton, Fl 33433

As soon as possible, but NO LATER than Monday, April 3rd by mail or the end of morning services on Friday, April 7th in person.

mechIRat chametz (SellINg of chametz) PaSSoveR 5777the Bible instructs that in observing pesach, all leaven must be removed from one’s home. life conditions make it impossible to literally fulfill this Biblical edict, and rabbinic authorities instituted a legal fiction: one transfers his chametz to the rabbi, who in turn sells it to a non-Jew. it is traditional at pesach-time to give Ma’ot Chitim - tzedakah to help feed the hungry. all contributions made to the rabbi’s Discretionary Fund for “Ma’ot Chitim” will go to the Jacobson Family Food pantry in cooperation with ruth rales Jewish Family service.

the transfer to Rabbi Steinhardt should be done in person, but if this is impossible, please mail in the following declaration:

i,_________________________________________________ empower and permit rabbi David steinhardt to act in my stead and behalf to sell all chametz, (leaven) possessed by me, knowingly or unknowingly and to lease all places affix my signature on this day.

SIYUm b’choR SeRvIce foR the fIRSt-boRN male - monday, april 10, 8:00 a.m. (Main sanctuary) Commemorate the fact that the first-born of israel were spared the fate of the Egyptians who were smitten during the tenth plague. it became compulsory for the first born of each Jewish family to fast on the day preceding passover. however, if the first-born participates in a Seudat Mitzvah, which is always after the conclusion of a rabbinic study, he is exempt from fasting. We earnestly request everyone who is a first-born (and those who are not) to participate in this service.

yoM hashoah - seeking important informationFor many years we have honored members of B’nai torah who are survivors,

hidden Children, and Concentration Camp liberators in a procession on yom hashoah. We have recorded their stories in a booklet that we print

for our annual commemoration. We know that our survivors are aging, and many have passed away. as a congregation, we wish to now collect the stories and accounts of our parents, grandparents, and other relatives as

they experienced the tragedies of the holocaust. if you are a second or third generation descendant of a survivor or liberator whose account we do not have, please write a short description of their experience, including names,

places, and details as they have been passed down to you. please send these recollections to lauren at [email protected].
