Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces 2013 Summer Season

at Oregon Ridge Park, the Meyerhoff and Strathmore

BSO’s Summer season includes Baroque, Gershwin, annual Star-Spangled

Spectacular, The Matrix Live in Concert and music from The Legend of Zelda

Baltimore, Md. (April 9, 2013) — The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra today announced its programming

for the Summer 2013 concert season including selections from Baroque masters, The Matrix Live in Concert,

a celebration of Gershwin’s Greatest Hits, music from the classic video game The Legend of Zelda and the

opportunity for young singers to share the stage with the BSO. See page 3 for a complete calendar of events,

including venue and ticketing information. Artist biographies begin on page 5.

The summer season begins with Baltimore’s favorite Fourth of July tradition: the Star-Spangled Spectacular

at Oregon Ridge Park (Cockeysville, Md.) on July 3 & 4, featuring patriotic favorites that culminate in a

brilliant fireworks display. Maestro Robert Bernhardt leads the BSO in selections such as Tchaikovsky’s 1812

Overture, Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever and more. The program also features soprano Katie Van Kooten,

singing songs from America’s soundtrack. Each concert begins with the National Anthem, sung by the

winner(s) of the BSO’s sixth annual “O, Say Can You Sing?” singing competition. (Full details about the

competition, including audition information, will be announced at a later date.)

On July 11 at the Music Center at Strathmore and July 12 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, BSO

Concertmaster Jonathan Carney will lead the orchestra in a concert featuring the Masters of Baroque,

celebrating music that expanded the size, range and complexity of musical performance. Highlights from

late Baroque music include “Winter” and “Summer” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Bach’s Orchestral Suite

No. 3 and Handel’s Royal Fireworks Suite and Water Music.

On July 13 at the Meyerhoff, the BSO presents The Matrix Live in Concert. Composer Don Davis will lead

the orchestra as it performs the soundtrack to a live screening of the 1999 science fiction action film starring

Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne and Carrie-Anne Moss. The Academy Award-winning movie has been

praised by film critics and audiences alike for its innovative visual effects and cinematography.

Maestro Case Scaglione joins pianist Jon Nakamatsu and the BSO in Gershwin’s Greatest Hits on July 25

at the Music Center at Strathmore and July 26 at the Meyerhoff. Mr. Nakamatsu’s 2007 all-Gershwin

recording with Jeff Tyzik and the Rochester Philharmonic featuring Rhapsody in Blue rose to number three

on Billboard's classical music charts and earned extraordinary critical acclaim. The BSO will perform

Rhapsody and more in this concert of his best-known works.

The BSO’s summer season closes with a presentation of The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the

Goddesses, July 27 at the Meyerhoff. While the Orchestra performs melodies from Ocarina of Time, The

Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and more, fan-favorite scenes from the games will flash on a jumbo screen

above the stage. Patrons are encouraged to attend the concert dressed as their favorite Hyrule characters.

Summer 2013 Artist Biographies

Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

The Grammy Award-winning Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (BSO) is internationally recognized as having

achieved a preeminent place among the world's most important orchestras. Acclaimed for its enduring

pursuit of artistic excellence, the BSO has attracted a devoted national and international following while

maintaining deep bonds throughout Maryland with innovative education and community outreach

initiatives.

The BSO made musical history in September 2007, when Maestra Marin Alsop led her inaugural concerts as

the Orchestra’s 12th music director, making her the first woman to head a major American orchestra. With

her highly praised artistic vision, her dynamic musicianship and her commitment to accessibility in classical

music, Maestra Alsop’s leadership has ushered in a new era for the BSO and its audiences.

In addition to the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, where the orchestra has performed for 30 years, the

BSO is a founding partner and the resident orchestra at the state-of-the-art Music Center at Strathmore, just

outside of Washington, D.C. With the opening of Strathmore in February 2005, the BSO became the nation’s

only major orchestra with year-round venues in two metropolitan areas.

Robert Bernhardt, conductor

Star-Spangled Spectacular

Conductor Robert Bernhardt brings a unique combination of infectious enthusiasm, a style of ease and a

depth of musicianship to the podium. Equally at home with symphonic masterworks, opera and popular

music in a variety of genres, Mr. Bernhardt’s conducting activity reflects his versatility and broad musical

taste. He is music director emeritus of the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, having recently completed

tenure of 19 years as that orchestra’s music director. Mr. Bernhardt also holds the title of principal pops

conductor of the Louisville Orchestra, where he celebrated 30 years during the 2011-2012 season. He has

previously served as artistic director and principal conductor of the Rochester Philharmonic (1995-1998),

music director and conductor of the Tucson Symphony (1987-1995), and principal guest conductor of

Kentucky Opera (1991-1996).

Mr. Bernhardt enjoys a special relationship with the Edmonton Symphony; he appears several times each

season conducting Light Classics, Pops and holiday programs and hosts a four-day Symphony Under The

Sky Festival over Labor Day weekend. He is also a frequent and regular guest conductor with the Boston

Pops. Other guest conducting engagements include appearances with the symphony orchestras of Colorado,

Detroit, Houston, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, St. Louis, Seattle, Tucson, the Pacific Symphony and the

Iceland Symphony, among others. Mr. Bernhardt made his Carnegie Hall debut in 1978 in a series of

concerts with PDQ Bach.

During his tenure with the Kentucky and Chattanooga Opera companies, he conducted fully staged

productions of more than 40 operas, including Don Giovanni, La Traviata, Rigoletto, La Bohème, Il Trovatore,
