Head coach John Harbaugh on his original “vision” for the Ra-vens and his team entering 2012:“Somehow, last year, and now, this year, more so than ever, I feel in my element as the head coach. It looks the way I always want-ed it to look. I remember I told the team in some of the tough moments back [in my first season of 2008], ‘I know what it’s go-ing to look like, the picture is as clear as can be in my mind, and we’re not even close to being there yet. But we will be, no matter how long it takes, we will get there, I promise you that.’ And right now, it looks as close as it’s ever looked.”

RB Ray Rice on John Harbaugh’s vision and toughness:“Coach brought a winning mentality here. He built a physical team, and him being a tough coach makes us a tough team. That’s one thing that’s great about him, because he’s got his beliefs and his ways, but we all believe in him. He’s our head coach, and if you believe in your head coach, you believe in his vision and chase what he sees. It eventually becomes the whole team’s vision. Now we’ve just got to turn this team’s vision into a reality.”

ESPN.com’s Jamison Hensley on RB Ray Rice:“He’s been the NFL’s most consistent all-around running back over the past three seasons. Since 2009, Rice has produced at least 1,700 total yards. Last year, he led the AFC North in rushing (1,364 yards) and receptions (76). Rice isn’t just the best running back in the AFC North. He’s the best in the AFC.”

John Harbaugh on the Ravens’ “aging” defense and players stepping in for injured OLB Terrell Suggs:“The point is, you never replace a Terrell Suggs. You go with the next player, and then you play defense. And I think we’ll be really good. The good thing is that we still have a lot of veteran anchors out there. People want to talk about this ‘aging defense,’ but I just don’t see it. We’ve got a lot of good, young players rolling in there. Yeah, there are some great players who are older, but they have to play at a high level to stay ahead of the young guys. So, I don’t think we’re an aging defense. We have some star players – two guys, basically [Ray Lewis and Ed Reed] – who are older guys who can still play at a high level. But the rest of them are young guys.”

NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal on the success of the Ravens’ draft: “If the NFL was a fantasy football league, the Baltimore Ravens are that guy who always makes the rest of the room say, ‘Nice pick.’ The Ravens take value. Year after year, they see a blue-chip talent fall for some bogus reason or another. And then they snap them up, coach them up and make them into Pro Bowlers.”

NFL analyst Joe Theismann on the Ravens’ 2012 outlook: “I like the Ravens. They’re getting better with Torrey Smith. Joe Flacco has played in a tough division for four seasons and is used to facing great defenses like the Pittsburgh Steelers twice a year. They’ve put together a darn good offensive line that got old and got better again. They’ve got one of the best running backs in football in Ray Rice. They’ve got a wide receiving corps that can threaten down the field. With a defense like the Ravens, they’ll make somebody pay the price.”

ESPN’s Ron Jaworski on QB Joe Flacco’s arm strength and ability to attack opposing defenses:“Arm strength – that’s Flacco’s No. 1 attribute. I get so tired of hearing how arm strength is overrated. It’s far more important than people think. … He has the strongest arm in the NFL. And he has an aggressive, confident throwing mentality. ... The ele-ment always overlooked by those who minimize arm strength is the willingness of quarterbacks like Flacco to pull the trigger. Few recognize that because there is no quantifiable means by which to evaluate throws that are not made by quarterbacks with lesser arm strength. It’s all about dimensions. Flacco gives you the abil-ity to attack all areas of the field at any point in the game.”

ESPN analyst and former Colts president Bill Polian on new Ra-vens QBs coach Jim Caldwell and QB Joe Flacco:“[Caldwell] is a tremendous support mechanism, a sounding board, a guy who knows the position, knows the demands of the position and can help Joe through the rough spots. They’re both in it together, and Jim is a great support for any quarterback. I’m a big Jim Caldwell fan, and he will be of immense value to Joe.”

Ravens executive vice president/general manager Ozzie New-some on LB Ray Lewis entering his 17th season:”He’s moving around this year as well as he has the last three or four years. His change of direction, his burst and quickness, they’re all there. I’ve watched the evolution of a young man over the years and seen how he continues to stay ahead of the curve.”

CBSSports’ Jason La Canfora on the Ravens’ dominant defense: “If there is one constant with the Ravens, it’s the ability to shut people down. A few years back, the vulnerability was on the back end, but now with youthful Lardarius Webb and Jimmy Smith at corner, and Ed Reed still making game-changing plays, Baltimore has one of the best secondaries in the NFL. It’s a tall, physical group, with no shortage of individuals with elite ball skills.”

“The Ravens’ general manager has built a perennial playoff participant through the draft, and he’s done so by spotlighting the kinds of players the organization is now known for – those who play like they’d do it for free. Gritty, tough and with a love of the game. Hard-nosed, nasty and with a certain violence. If you were choosing sides for a street fight, think about how many Ravens you’d want on your team.”

- NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport on how GM Ozzie Newsome has built the Ravens

On Aug. 15, the Ravens hosted Sherman Cypress and his family at training camp. Make-A-Wish teamed up with Sherman, a 15-year-old

boy with a life-threatening illness, to make his dream of meeting his favorite Ravens players come true. After the practice, Sherman, barely able to contain his excitement, met and took pictures with ILB Ray Lewis, RB Ray Rice, head coach John Harbaugh and many others. Not only were Sherman and his family invited out to training camp, they also were guests of the Ravens at their preseason game against the Lions on Aug. 17. To complete the experience, Sherman was given pre-game sideline access that allowed him to interact with the players, many of whom recognized him from the practice. Both Sherman and the Ravens will never forget the special time spent together.

For the third-consecutive year, five outstanding area high school seniors, who displayed remarkable academic achievement, extra-curricular participation and community service, were awarded a $5,000 renewable scholarship ($20,000 over four years to each scholar) to support their respective college educations. Funded by the Ravens All Community Team Foundation (RACTF), the scholarship program enables local youth to continue their education on a collegiate level. The Ravens have a long-standing history of service to local communities, and this fund supports those who exhibit the same commitment. Applications were accepted from students who attend public schools in Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Carroll County. The Ravens organization continued its partnership with CollegeBound Foundation, an independent, nonprofit program designed to work exclusively with local students, helping high schoolers achieve a post-secondary education. After receiving over 150 applications, the scholarship committee selected five winners. The winners were invited to attend and be recognized at halftime of the Aug. 23 preseason game against the Jaguars. This year’s winning scholars are: Maurice “Chris” Harried (Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy HS, University of Maryland, Baltimore County), Samuel Holechek (Francis Scott Key HS, McDaniel College), Bahareh Jabbari (Western HS, Johns Hopkins University), Jaspreet Samra (Western HS, Towson University) and Denise Saint-Jean (Randallstown HS, Cornell University).
