Non-profit brings summer jobs to youth

Local non-profit, The Intersection is celebrating a summer of successful job creation. The program, which focuses on high school students with leadership potential, has been campaigning for job opportunities for the city’s youth over the summer. However, the initial campaign, called the Southeast Youth Jobs Coalition, began in 2013 because of a spike of violence in the city. A large amount of this violence was perpetrated by young people, allegedly 46% of crime was done by youth, despite them only being 20% of the population. The end of the year, 235 people were killed. In response, The Intersection created the 235 Lives campaign that aims to create one job for every life lost to violence.

The coalition’s summer work branches off of that idea. After a series of listening campaigns in Southeast that were expanded through the Perkins home and Roland Park areas, The Intersection decided that job creation should be a top priority.

“We asked residents if they had the resources, what would they do to reduce crime? Overwhelmingly, they said more job and work opportunities were needed to make the youth successful and keep them off the streets,” said Ifetayo Kitwala, a student leader at The Intersection.

Kitwala said that underprivileged youth in the city have a number of barriers they must break through, including stereotypes that prevent businesses from hiring them. She said there’s a generational misunderstanding in Baltimore which puts youth at a disadvantage since they are not given a chance to thrive. Through jobs, she said that youth can learn vital social skills as well as establish connections in the workforce.

“Hiring youth has long-term benefits for everyone: it teaches young people how to be successful on the job; provides employers with energetic teens to help their organizations reach their goals; stimulates our local economy; and reduces crime, violence, and welfare dependency,” states The Intersection’s GoFundMe page, which asks for donations to aid job training.

The Intersection engages in a variety of community events and programs to shift the negative perception of youth, Kitwala said. For

example, they often host Open Mic nights where young people can share their stories, as well as volunteer at homeless shelter and read to children at schools. Kitwala said this is a way to connect the youth to the world around them and bridge the divides between generations in Southeast.

Kitwala said that she was shy as a child but her first summer job allowed her to open up and realize her leadership potential.

“Once I started learning what a job can do and the sense of responsibility and skills you learn that important in the communication and customer service fields. Jobs can help and influence and break up this barrier getting out of college, and out of high school, and not knowing what to do with your degree,” she said.

Currently they have secured 28 jobs and aims to have 50 by the end of the summer. Members of the organizations went door to door to Southeast businesses to explain their cause. Kitwala said some of the participating businesses include Spartan Pizza in Highlandtown and Patterson Park Dry Cleaners and Laundry. The program is run through Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake’s Hire One Youth Program, so applicants must fill out that application. They are then added to a database that employers can use to pick somebody who fits their business. Businesses also have the power to interview applicants; they’re not just haphazardly assigned. Applicants must be between the ages of 16 to 21, as stated by the Hire One Youth rules. The coalition was supported by the Southeast CDC, Creative Alliance, Banner Neighborhoods, and Breath of God Lutheran Church.

On Thursday, June 30, the Southeast Youth Jobs Coalition is hosting a finale event at The Intersection’s offices at 518 S. Conkling Street. The event is called “An Ending to a New Beginning” and will celebrate the progress the student leaders have made so far.

“We’re calling it that because even though the summer is ending we are still working on the project past it and finding more jobs as we go,” said Kitwala.

More information on the The Intersection and the job coalition can be found at www.baltimoreintersection.org.

Former Haussner’s site to possibly become apartment complex

by GIANNA DECARLO [email protected]

A Baltimore-based developer is seeking feedback from locals on a plan to build apartments at the former location of Haussner’s restaurant. The initial proposal would build apartments with retail space on the first floor. The 28,000 square-foot building at 3244 Eastern Avenue has been vacant for almost a decade after the closing of Dunstin’s Steakhouse and Seafood in 2006.

Haussner’s was well-known in the community, with it’s old-style food and ornate furnishings, since it opened in 1926 by William Henry Haussner. It served it’s last meal in 1999 and was then donated by the Haussner family to Baltimore International College culinary school.

The condition of the building, whether it will have to be completely rebuild, and what remains inside it are all unknown.

The property was originally scheduled to be auctioned off on June 30, but the sale was cancelled a few days prior due to it being sold. This is the second time this has happened to the location, with an auction being cancelled in May of 2013 due to possible negotiations.

Not too much is currently known about the plan for apartments, but the developer will devolve more details at a community meeting, The Highlandtown Business Association and the Canton Community Association will host the public forum between residents and the developers on Wednesday, August 5 at the Southeast Anchor Branch Library at the corner of Eastern Avenue and S. Conkling Street. Everybody is encouraged to attend and share their thoughts and suggestions to the developer.

Brian Sweeney, the president of the Highlandtown Community Association, said they are expecting a good turn-out.

“I think we’re going to get a lot of interest. I really don’t know what to expect but nothing will surprise me. A lot of people are concerned about it because they look at it through a nostalgic eye. It’s a high profile building, it’s got a lot of history,” he said.

The meeting will be lead mostly by the developer who will describe the proposal to residents. The residents will then have to opportunity to express their concerns and voice their opinions which will influence the development.

Sweeney said that the Highlandtown Community Association will wait to hear the public’s feedback before supporting or opposing the plan.

He says it will not be an easy sell but he is “cautiously optimistic”. He said that the

developer does realize that parking will be an issue with an apartment complex and they will apparently have one parking sport per unit.

“I hope everyone with an interest in the future of Highlandtown will attend. I do hope they can make something of it. It’s been an eyesore for a while,” said Sweeney.

The empty building has been owned by Joseph A. Schultz since 2011. He also owns the building across the street from the former Haussner’s building from 3301-3307 Eastern Avenue which has also not been sold yet.

motorist delays and travel times,” the report states.

It then uses this as a reason to enhance biking and walking routes as well as improving public transportation. To do so, they suggest first improving street network connectivity through new links including the Central Avenue bridge extension, the Brewer’s Hill north-south connector and the Boston-Broening Connector. The plan will employ traffic management strategies including curbside management, signal timing, and deployment of Traffic Enforcement Officers. It will create transportation hubs in Harbor East, Canton, and Highlandtown by improving connectivity between the water taxis, buses, bicycles.

“Increased use of non-single occupant vehicle transportation modes is essential to accommodate the expected growth in Southeast Baltimore. Equally as important are Transportation Demand Management strategies by employers/ employment centers that make walking, biking, and transit more cost competitive, convenient and appealing,” it reads. “Improving upon the ability of Southeast to accommodate new trips requires: Increasing travel options to and within Southeast through expanded and prioritized transit and biking networks, enhancing connections between travel modes within Southeast, employing traffic management strategies.”

To also limit congestion, the plan supports the construction of the Red Line Light Rail system, which Governor Hogan axed last month, and the continued funding of the Charm City Circulator and Harbor Connector.

One of the biggest issues residents wanted the plan to address was the proposal to remove residential parking spaces along Aliceanna and Boston Sts to reduce congestion during rush hours. This would’ve turned Aliceanna into a two-way street, something that upset residents, who needed parking and worried that Aliceanna would be unable to handle the influx of vehicles.

The plan briefly addressed this issue with somewhat of a compromise.

Their current proposal is to “provide 2nd right turn lane during PM peak hours (4-7 p.m.) by allowing PM peak hour restricted on street parking on Aliceanna Street between Boston and Chester Streets.”

It is likely this arrangement will be changed based on community feedback.

Traffic signals will be reconstructed at key locations.

The locations are:East Pratt Street at Washington StreetEast Fayette and BroadwayPonca Street at Boston StreetBoston Street at Hudson Street and

Montford AveTo increase access for visitors, it focuses on

Pratt St. at President St., suggesting to “remove one of two right turn lanes and install wayfinding signage to encourage vehicles to travel further east to access Fell’s Point and Canton via Central Avenue and Broadway.”

The plan calls for a left turn lane and a through lane on the eastbound and westbound approach at South Broadway St. and Eastern Ave. and at South Broadway and Fleet Sts. Also, it calls for a removal of bike restrictions on the Canton Promenade, the implementation of a bike-share program, and a MARC parking lot in Bayview at 5600 Lombard Street.

The plan for Southeast will establish a formal Transportation Management Association to facilitate employer/employee programs and incentives including ride shares, subsidized transit passes, parking and ride shuttles and guaranteed rides home.

A common complaint from those in the community involve large trucks and tracker trailers creating noise and shaking buildings by going down streets they are not allowed to. The plan takes this into consideration, and will update truck route signage and create traffic mitigation zones so they will be correctly instructed on how to enter and exit.

The DOT held two public meetings earlier this month to discuss the plan.

They are accepting comments on the transportation plan until August. To provide feedback, contact [email protected].

“It is very important that they hear from you. Our streets are crowded and only growing more so. We must ensure that the City and its consultants understand the need to create a multi-modal transportation plan with out-of-the-box thinking! Maybe that’s better bus service or Circulator-type routes, maybe it’s a more robust water taxi service, maybe it includes protected bike lanes and bike shares, maybe it’s all of this and more -- and I’m sure it includes many things I haven’t thought of – and the City hasn’t either,” wrote Delegate Brooke Lierman about the plan.

Lisa Quina is a master of turning trash into treasures. As a stylist and home designer, she brings new life to classic and oftentimes abandoned furniture and fixtures, making them modern and stylistically relevant. Her store, Barefoot Dwelling, at 101 N. Haven Street showcases her work and hopes to gel with the funky and creative tastes of Baltimore residents.

Barefoot Dwelling has two other locations in Severna Park and Frederick, Maryland. Originally, Quina sold her products through online sellers like Etsy.

She acquires the furniture, which can generously be described as “fixer-uppers”, mostly through estate sales, garage sales, and auctions. Quina said there’s an online community with resources and information on upcoming sales.

She is willing to travel as far as possible if she knows she’ll have a successful haul and if the items fit with her general style.

“There’s a little bit of a science to it,” she said.

Quina is rejuvenating and repairing vintage pieces while still referencing back to the customs and styles of their past. Her inventory includes, but is not limited to, pieces that are inspired by the mid-century modern aesthetic.

“We take something and recreate it in a way that is personally appealing to you. It’s already appealing in style, it’s already appealing in scale, it’s already appealing in all these ways but to make it fresh and current is what we try to do. And that’s what we enjoy and it works out really well.”

For example, in the back end of the store is a large, slightly rusted spotlight. Quina said this was found on the side of the road. She has plans to add a base or stand to it and said that it will be reused as anything from a chandelier to a floor light.

“There’s no rules about this. That’s what we

love, finding a problem and finding a solution.”She always lists items “as is” at first, in case

buyers want to DIY renovations or keep it in its natural state. If the buyer wants the upgrade, they work out a cost and proceed. Quina works with Highlandtown Upholstery to fix fabrics or install new foam.

Her future goals are to feature other forms of art in her store, such as jewelry and clothing from local artisans. Most of her sales have come from California and New York but she hopes that city locals will embrace her vision as well.

“We’re not really specific about authenticity of the time period over style. We like to use these vibrant fabrics that are very graphic and more modern,” she said, saying that most furniture manufacturers favor solid prints and are more accurate to the style’s time period, but not as creative or expressive.

“It all has to be a little bit unpredictable, a mixture of the precious and the natural and organic, and very functional. It has to be useful and multi-use is even better.”

At the entrance of the shop is a painting of stern-looking older man, with eyes that seem to follow you as you walk. Quina laughs when it’s pointed out and says that the right person will find the painting and it will fit in their home perfectly.

For her, a piece that fit perfectly was a large 15 foot wooden work bench she retrieved from a garage in Baltimore. She said it used to be used in a old hardwood store but she has since re-conceptualized it as the counter and center-piece of Barefoot Dwelling.

Some of the joy of the job comes from getting to know the stories of the original owners. Behind the counter is a small collage of old pictures from houses Quina has visited. She said she loved the diversity and unique lives the photos represent.

“It’s another side of the story that we’re beginning to tell more to people. We love doing this, we love getting this furniture because they people and history are so cool.” For Quina, in her products and in her designs, the priority is to represent the interests and nuances of the customers. Your home should be personalized. If home is where the heart is, then that home has to fit you.

“There’s nothing more important in a house then reflecting who you are. Nothing can be beautiful if it doesn’t have any personality.”

For a list of products for sale or more information, visit Barefoot Dwelling’s website at barefootdwelling.com.

What sets Practical Pet Protocol training classes apart from the rest in Baltimore?

We keep you in control, teaching you how to deliver commands such as sit, down, come, stay, heel, and place.

We expose your dog to real-world distractions during the training process, ensuring the training is solid and reliable. After all, these new behaviors need to stick even after the group sessions have ended.

We’ll teach you a time-tested approach that will enable you to ad-dress any behavioral relapses or new behavior problems before they get out of hand, without needing to call on a trainer.

We address not only the elements needed for basic obedience, but also the elements needed for a basic, functional relationship with your dog. We show you how to develop a bond of mutual trust and respect that will allow you to keep a positive influence on your dog’s behav-ior.

You will receive a 40+ page booklet and free access to our mobile app to make your independent practice with your pet easier and more effective.

BALTIMORE GUIDE 9WEDNESDAY, JULY 29, 2015

To our readers:

Thank you so much for your participation and support for our 2015 Reader’s Choice.

In the Southeast, we’re lucky to have so many businesses, organizations and individuals doing an extraordinary job providing services to and caring for the community – and this is your chance to recognize them all.

The establishments listed first received the most votes, second listed got the second most votes, and so on.

This year, we see many new businesses that won your hearts, like Mayuree Thai Tavern and Alma Cocina, as well as old favorites like DiPasquale’s Italian Marketplace and Aqua Plumbing that can’t be beat.

So even if you’re a new resident or somebody who has lived here for 50 years, the Reader’s Choice is an invaluable guide to the best that Southeast Baltimore has to offer.

This couldn’t have happened without you. Thank you and enjoy!

What is a better pairing than rock and opera? For doubters, the Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) will make you believe with their dynamic and high-energy performances that combine the two unlikely styles.

Founded in 2007, BROS perform has performed a variety of original rock theatre performances through the visions of talented artists and DIY resources.

Where they perform varies but they’ve hosted a few shows at the Creative Alliance. Earlier this summer, the Creative Alliance and BROS hosted a “Rock Opera 6-pack” which included six one-act 25 minutes play back-to-back.

BIRDS HOUSE by Andy MindzAk

Buying and selling and trading

Last week I wrote about the Baltimore Orioles being buyers at the trade deadline, however that was before they were swept by the New York Yankees. Sure, they took two out of three against the Tampa Bay Rays but now they sit in third place in the AL East with a 48-49 record and are seven games out of first place. At this point, they could be buyers but could also be sellers.

One potential trade partner could be the San Diego Padres. The Orioles have been looking for another outfield bat along with Adam Jones and San Diego has one in Justin Upton. ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark has mentioned the Orioles have had talks with the Padres about Upton and could even include another pitcher such as Andrew Cashner or Tyson Ross.

That move would be a great haul for Baltimore although I’m not sure at what cost. Baltimore’s offense has been putrid the past month. After a torrid June in which the O’s scored 148 runs, second most over that span to the Toronto Blue Jays, their bats have fallen silent in July. In 20 July games, the Orioles have scored 66 runs, 26th in the league. Cashner is a quality arm, although does have injury issues, and Ross is another decent arm they can put in the rotation.

While that trade makes sense from a buyer’s perspective, there could be some options out there if the O’s are looking to sell. One option they can pursue is Chris Davis. While I would love to see Crush in Baltimore beyond this season, as he will become a free agent after this year, there are teams looking for a first baseman, most notably the St. Louis Cardinals. With their first baseman Matt Adams out since May thanks to a torn right quad, they can certainly use a power bat in their lineup.

These next few days will be interesting as the deadline is almost here, and with the Orioles not exactly gaining ground in the AL East race, things can go either way. Wei-Yin Chen will be a free agent after this season and if Baltimore is selling, he could be shipped off as a cheaper starting pitcher option compared to Cole Hamels.

Whichever direction they go, I just hope they go all-in one way or the other. If they are going to sell, try to get as much as possible. If they are going to beef their team up, I hope they commit and get the right talent that will help them not only make the playoffs but have the ability to go far into October.

Whatever happens, next week you can be sure to read about it here.

Friends and family remember Leto’s love for lifeBy ERIK ZyGMOnT [email protected]“We didn’t think we’d need all this space, but obviously we did,” said Diane Posko to a couple hundred friends and family mem-bers gathered at Fell’s Point’s Polish Home Club last Friday to celebrate the life of Kimberly Leto.

Posko, Leto’s sister, said that Leto would not have wanted the event to be sad. “She would love for us to all focus on how much we all loved her and her smile and laugh,” Posko said. She also mentioned her sister’s “abso-lutely wicked” sense of humor and deep affinity for the spiritual.“Although Kim was not associated with a specific religion, she was very spiritual,” said Posko. “She had an uncanny ability to understand these ancient texts.” Jan Dietrich, a spiritual mentor for Leto, said that she “really valued the presence of God in her life.”

Janney Street Park has no obvious signage indicating that it is a city park, save for a weathered rusty sign hanging from the park’s chain-linked fence with the acronym POS—indicating that the park is or was affiliated with Program Open Space, a program that conserves natural

Cathy Gentry didn’t think that neighborhood parks could disappear, but she may find out otherwise.Last November she and some of her Janney St.-area neighbors attended a meeting of the city and the Baltimore Development Corporation informing them that the nearby Pompeian Olive Oil Company was interested in expanding and would like to buy Janney Street Park from the city—and the city was considering selling it to them.
