5 month old Terrier mix pup. Friendly, curious and full of energy. He looks
like a little Benji Dog. Fully up to date on all shots. Fully vetted and ready for
a loving home.
There are 3 of these beautiful babies. They are about 9 weeks old, have had
their first set of shots and are ready for their forever homes.
These two would love to be able to go home together. They were brought in
by an older woman who was going in to assisted living and could not keep them.
They would really love to be back in a home and
away from the shelter life they have found them-
selves in. Fully vetted and up to date on shots.

Texting And Driving Is An EpidemicOf the many dangers on the road, text messaging while driving is one that is entirely preventable. Putting down your phone when driving can prevent thousands of injuries and even death.
According to Students Against Destructive Decisions and Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, in-stant and text messaging while driving tops the list of driver distractions. Evidence gathered by these organizations has suggested that more than 3,000 vehicle fatalities and about 300,000 col-lisions a year can be attributed to texting conversations while the vehicle is in motion.
The Web site Distraction.gov notes that, in 2010, 3,092 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver and an additional 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver. Some people are now saying that texting while driving is equally as dangerous as driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs in terms of interfering with individuals' driving abilities.
Texting creates a crash risk 23 times greater than driving while not distracted, according to the United States. Department of Transportation. Although it may seem like a driver's eyes are off the road for only a nominal amount of time, texting gener-ally requires about 4 seconds, which is 4 seconds drivers are not looking at the road. At average driving speeds, that can mean driving about 360 feet, or the length of a football field, without looking.
But messaging while driving is not the only danger associ-ated with phones and operating a motor vehicle. A study from Carnegie Mellon University found that using a cell phone while driving reduces the amount of brain activity associated with driving by almost 40 percent. Therefore, texting or sim-ply speaking on a phone while driving involves a manual dis-traction, a visual distraction and a cognitive distraction. All of those distractions add up to trouble.
Many areas have banned the use of cell phones while driving. But such laws are difficult to enforce. A 2009 Pew Research study on teens and distracted driving found that nearly half of all people between the ages 12 to 17 have at one time ridden in a vehicle where the driver was engaged in texting. Fifty-two percent of phone-owning teens ages 16 to 17 said they have talked on a cell phone while driving.
In response to the rise of texting-while-driving accidents, some organizations have taken an eye-opening approach to educating drivers about the dangers of texting. In 2010, AAA of the Carolinas started airing an evening public service announcement showing graphic images of a teen driver texting then get-ting involved in a 3-car acci-dent. The ending slogan stat-ed, "You drive, you text, you die." Other campaigns focus on the positives instead of the negatives, with Facebook groups promoting people who choose not to text and drive.
Any activity that takes a driver's attention away from the road can lead to accidents. This includes eating, chang-ing radio stations or address-ing unruly children in the back seat. Making an effort to reduce distractions -- espe-cially putting down the phone while in the car -- can consid-erably reduce accident rates.

Things To Do Before Buying A Used CarUsed cars can be quite a bargain. Whether purchased from a dealer, private citizen or even a family member, a used or preowned vehicle can prove just as reliable as a new vehicle but at a fraction of the cost. While plenty of people have had good experiences purchasing a used vehicle, consumers know that a used car is never a sure bet. However, shoppers can employ the following tips to learn as much about a used vehicle as possible before any money exchanges hands.* Ask for a vehicle history report. A vehicle history report can show potential buyers how many owners a vehicle has had as well as the vehicle's accident history. A vehicle with several previous owners and an extensive accident history is one many consumers would prefer to avoid. Consider it a red flag if a seller, be it a dealership or private seller, does not want to share the vehicle history report. For a nominal fee, the Department of Justice's National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (www.nmvtis.org) provides information about a vehicle's title, its odometer data and certain aspects of its accident history.* Test drive the car under as many conditions as possible. When test driving a used car, try to drive it in as many conditions as possible. Test the vehicle on hills, in stop-and-go traffic and test how the vehicle responds to accelerated speeds on the freeway. * Have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic. Once the vehicle changes ownership, it will need to pass inspection before you can legally drive it. However, many used cars are purchased as-is, meaning you won't be protected if the vehicle fails inspection after you have paid for the car. As a result, it's important to have the vehicle inspected by your own mechanic before any money changes hands. The mechanic can point out any issues with the vehicle and give his rec-ommendation as to whether it's worth buying.* Research the model of vehicle. Before buying a used vehicle, it also helps to research the spe-cific model. Some models have better reputations for longevity than others. Such research won't
necessarily be easy, but auto-related consumer magazines typically produce stories examining the frequency of repair and maintenance costs with specific models.Buying a used car requires a leap of faith, but a few tricks of the trade can make consumers much more confident that they will find the right vehicle.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
Business Owners Must Get Involved To Shape Our Future
The media is full of stories about economic con-cerns, political battles, and community issues. In re-cent weeks there were arguments over who won the latest political debate, or what the hot topic was at the last town meeting. Various stories were told of commu-nities either struggling to stay within the state-mandat-ed 2% property tax cap or lobbying their constituents to override it. Environmentalists warned of invasive spe-cies in Lake George and clamored for the Champlain Canal to close in order to prevent the spread of tiny, spiny waterfleas. And of course everyone wanted to know how long the latest construction delays were on the Twin Bridges. If you’re a business owner in the region, now’s the time to join one or more local or regional organizations that can protect your interests and help shape a better economic future. Few other areas boast the resources and choices we have in southern Saratoga County. For example, the Saratoga County Chamber, based in Saratoga Springs, is one of the largest, most powerful and far reaching busi-ness groups in the entire state. At the other end of the spectrum, three business/professional associations (Ballston Spa, Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake, and Malta) plus the Mechanicville-Stillwater Area Chamber of Commerce cater specifically to
the needs of individual, tight-knit communities. The orga-nization I represent, located in Clifton Park, is somewhat of a hybrid. We are seen at venues such as Historic Lock 19 or the Saratoga County Fair just as often as a regional conference or speaking out on behalf of manufacturing, retail, agricultural and marine interests. If your business is not currently involved, please inves-tigate the possibilities and join the one(s) where you fit in best. It will make a difference for your bottom line and ensure that you have a seat at the table. Other interested parties are loud and vocal – how about you?
Albany, NY (July 31, 2012) –Do you have a love for animals and want to support a great local cause? Join with the Gold-stein Auto Group and bring your empty bottles and cans to a Goldstein dealership and support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society. The Mohawk Hudson Humane Society’s “Empties For Animals” campaign helps support the mission of the organization, includ-ing sheltering, adoption, education, advocacy and the preven-tion of cruelty to animals. This year’s goal is to raise $125,000, in honor of the Society’s 125th Anniversary. To reach the goal, the Goldstein Auto Group will need to collect more than 1,500,000 cans and bottles. The 2012 "Empties For Animals” campaign has raised over $46,000 during the first half of this year, an increase of $12,000 or 34% over the same period last year. The 2011 campaign raised a total

of more than $74,000 and collected 925,000 cans and bottles. Volunteers sorted all those bottles and cans, based on the originating distributor, which in turn generated $.08 per can or bottle instead of the regular $.05 redemption fee paid at stores. Monies from the program were used to benefit the more than 6,500 animals cared for by the Society in 2011. “We are very pleased to continue our partnership with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and support the 2012 “Empties For Animals” campaign. We would like to thank all of our custom-ers and the members of the community who have generously donated to such a worthy cause,” said Alan Goldstein, President of Goldstein Auto Group.

Lots of folks have been asking if it’s too late to plant fall bulbs. The answer is no. You can plant daffodils and all the other spring flowering bulbs until the ground freezes. We need to plant these bulbs in the fall because thy need to get chilled over the winter for at least 8 weeks. I know I don’t have to tell you that our winters last WAY longer than 8 weeks so there’s still plenty of time to get them in. Whether we’ll get any warm days to tackle the task is another question. Maybe we’ll have an “Indian Summer” still. There’s always that hope. Business at my birdfeeder has been a brisk as the weather lately. I’m happy to see that there are lots of Tufted Titmice again. I haven’t seen too many the last few years. I don’t know what happened but they seem to be on the rebound in my area at least.
With the return of cold weather, gardeners must find comfort indoors. My houseplants, which have had to share my attention with their hardy outdoor cousins, now revel in the care lavished on them. Some of them spent the summer outside and have gotten trimmed back to help them adjust to lower light conditions indoors. My collection of miniature geraniums gets groomed and trimmed for the first time in a couple of months. As the sun dives toward the southern horizon, the light in my south windows improves. This will stimulate a new flowering cycle to cheer me up during the crisp, cold days ahead. For me, having flowering houseplants makes the winter months more bearable, keeping my spirits up when spring seems far away indeed.
The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all flowering houseplants. Their prolific flowering habit and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. We’ve all heard stories of great grandma’s prize violet whose descendants are still grown and loved by current family members.
The first requirement to consider for African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many find that a bright north window is the ideal spot. They also thrive when grown under fluorescent lights. Violets require daytime temperature of 70 degrees or more and need to be kept above 64 at night to thrive. They like their soil to be kept lightly moist by not soggy wet. You’ll want to use room temperature water to avoid shocking them. Use a good African Violet food about every 4th or 5th watering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They’ll flower more if they fell a bit cramped. Use shallow plastic or ceramic pots; clay pots dry too quickly to be beneficial to African Violets.
If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night then you may have trouble keeping African Violets. A cousin of the African Violet, the Streptocarpus (AKA: Cape Primrose) is a great alternative. The Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as the African Violet. It should also be kept evenly moist but is far more forgiving than the violet of ac-cidental dryness.
For the very cool home, consider the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when tem-peratures drop below 60 at night and won’t be happy if it gets warmer than 65 in the daytime. Keep them barely moist and feed about every forth of fifth watering during the flowering period. It’s not uncommon for a Cyclamen to maintain a flowering period of three months or longer if not over watered.
These three plants are all excellent candidates for indoor color due to their modest light requirements. Remember, the most common mistake folks make is over watering. If your house is dry and you want to provide extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel filled tray and fill the tray with water. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating water passes by the leaves. Be sure the pot isn’t actually sitting in the water but on the gravel above the water. Nothing kills a plant more quickly than drowning.
If you’re lucky enough to have a south-facing window or, better yet, a sunroom, then there’s almost no limit to the flowering beauties you can grow. Thanks for the read.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con- ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. J.M.
