THE JOYFUL NOISE, “WE ARE ONE”
CAPITAL DISTRICT – The Joy-ful Noise was a contempo-rary Christian music ministry well known in the Capital District region and beyond, during the years of 1969-1993. The Joyful Noise was a large group of young peo-
ple, led spiritually and musically by Mr. Bill Womer. The Joyful Noise was the core of what would later evolve into “Christian Music Ministries”. The positive side of social media, as well as the unfortunate passing of key members, has stirred interest in a reunion of The Joyful Noise, with the recognition, that still, “We are One”. A reunion is planned for October 10, 2015 focused on reuniting and catching up. The reunion will cul-minate with a barbeque dinner and an evening Praise and Worship service at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Many of the songs spanning three decades when young lives were forev-er impacted by this experience will be sung together again. We will also be including all the parents and family members in the Saturday night service who supported each of us dur-ing our “JN” years. During these early planning stages we are interested in help locating former members, and identifying folks to assist on various committees that have been formed. Please visit the Facebook page for Christian Music Ministries if you are a former member and want to connect, or contact us at [email protected]

TIPS FOR GETTING YOUR VEHICLE ROAD TRIP READY
(NAPS)—As the weather gets warm, vacationers will begin to set their sights on the open road. Whether it’s to get up close to that landmark that you’ve always wanted to see, visit old friends or visit extended family who live just a few states away, road trips offer great flexibility and excitement.
While just about any vehicle will serve its purpose for a road trip, there are ways to modify a car or truck to make the ex-perience more convenient and comfortable. In fact, the Spe-cialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) estimates that Americans spend $33 billion annually on products that en-hance the performance and styling of today’s vehicles.
“There is something exhilarating about a leisurely drive, whether it’s sitting in a comfortable air-conditioned car with a great sound system or in a convertible with the top down,” said Peter MacGillivray, SEMA VP of communications and events. “What’s really great is being able to personalize the vehicle to fit the needs of the drivers and passengers.”
Below are a few tips and tricks on how you can make your vehicle ready for your next big road trip.
• Toprotect the vehicle’s exterior fromany rockyweatherand/or road conditions, a paint protection film is an effective way to preserve the finish of your car, truck or SUV. For best results, this film should be professionally installed and ap-plied on areas such as the hood, bumpers, mirror backs and other places that might be prone to scratches and chips.
• Don’tunderestimatetheimpactagoodnavigationsystemcan have on your road trip. Aftermarket GPS and navigation systems with state-of-the-art technologies can be in-stalled in just about any ve-hicle. Starting as low as $50, there are tons of options available to help you stay within your budget and get you to your destination.
• Finding enough space isoften a problem encoun-
tered when traveling on a road trip. To make room for per-sonal items, consider a roof rack or cargo box to transport large pieces of luggage. Organizers for the trunk, center con-sole and on the back of seats are available to help keep items in order and in arms’ reach.
• Awirelesstirepressuremonitoringsystemcangiveyouanaccurate reading of your tire pressure at all times. By having sensors on each of the tires, the air pressure can be moni-tored and sent directly to your smartphone device, alerting you when one or more of your tires is low on pressure. This can help minimize any tire problems you might run into.
Regardless of how you modify your vehicle, it’s always a good idea to have a roadside emergency kit in tow. Premade kits include items such as jumper cables, a flashlight, emergency
whistle and a first-aid kit. You never know when you might need these things, so it is better to be safe than sorry.
Wherever you’re headed, there are a variety of dif-ferent automotive after-market products and ac-
cessories available to modify your vehicle in preparation for a road trip. To learn more and find out where these products are available to you, visit www.semaignited.com

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrass-ing problem for millions of people, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutter-inghelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

These beautiful babies are lab mixes. One was born with a docked tail. They are in be-
tween 8 to 9 weeks old. They had to wait a bit till there was
room to get them safe but now they are. These pups have
been vet checked, had shots, wormed and more.

WONDERFUL HOMES NEEDED FOR WONDERFUL
ANIMALSCAPITAL DISTRICT – Capital District Humane Association, Inc. (CDHA.NET) is an all-vol-unteer, no-kill animal rescue group that has been saving animals of all kinds through-out the capital region and beyond since 1988. Our goal is to place each animal in our program in a wonderful home where it will be treat-ed like a valued member of the family. We re-home dogs with no charge for surren-der. Since CDHA is a rescue group and doesn’t have a facility of its own, all its dogs are in foster homes and dogs are showcased at pet adop-tion clinics held three times each month.

As usual at this time of year, folks are having problems with what they like to refer to as “ground bees”. First of all, I’d like to set the record straight; there are some bees that lay their eggs in the ground but they are mostly solitary creatures. These bees generally go unnoticed. They aren’t the culprit that generates the calls I get concerning swarming, stinging insects that come from holes in the ground and that have yellow and black stripes. These aren’t bees but are, in all likelihood, yellow jackets. I just want to be clear about that since bees catch a lot of blame for activities that they aren’t responsible for. Our valuable honeybees aren’t at all aggressive like yellow jackets. Let’s cut the honeybees some slack since they are one of our most valuable assets. Of course the calls I’m getting are from folks who have somehow annoyed a hive of soil dwelling yellow jackets, usually while mowing the lawn or pulling weeds in their gardens. What they are most concerned with is not whether they are bees or yellow jackets but how to get rid of them. Bear in mind that yellow jackets will build their papery nests not only in the ground but also in hollow trees or any hollow area. For some reason, perhaps it is the damp soil, there seem to be more ground nests than normal. The first step is to find the entrance hole. This should be done very carefully. Anyone who’s ever had a run-in with yellow jacket knows that they get mighty testy when you move into what they consider “their” territory. Once you’ve identified the entrance hole to their nest by observing them come and go, just walk away and gather your assault weapons and wait until dark. The reason you’ll wait to attack until after the sun sets is a matter of safety. Yellow jackets, like other wasps and hornets, use polarized sunlight to navigate. Once the sun sets, they cannot tell east from west or even up from down. This gives you a big advantage, and you have no chance of getting stung. Your equipment will consist of a flashlight, a flat rock to cover the hole or a wad of newspaper to plug it up. Your weapon will be a can of aerosol hornet & wasp spray….the one that shoots a stream 20 feet. After dark, move up on the hole and empty the spray into the hole and then cover the hole or plug it up. That’s it! You’ll never see another yellow jacket emerge from that hole. In any case, whenever you need to spray wasps or hornets, always work after dark by the light of a flashlight for the safety it will provide. One of the more aggravating chores of the season is rearing its ugly head as the weather heats up: WEEDING. As much work as soil building and planting can be, I don’t find them as annoying as weeding. It’s like doing dishes, or mowing the lawn; a lot of work and when you’re finished, you’re simply back to square one again. No progress, just maintenance. Since there are a lot of things I’d rather be doing, anything I can do to minimize the amount of weeding (or mowing or dishwashing for that matter) is effort well spent. I can get a dishwasher to wash the dishes, I can get a bigger lawnmower to mow faster, but what can be done about weeds? Years ago, when I had my first vegetable garden, I was getting discouraged by the amount of time I spent hoeing and pulling weeds. It wasn’t a large garden but, between work and other pursuits, I didn’t have time to devote to weeding (which I hated anyway). Then, I read a letter in a gardening magazine about using paper and straw as a weed barrier in the garden. It sounded great to me! I laid the paper grocery bags on the soil to block out the sun and then straw on top to hold the paper in place. It worked great then and still does (although I now must use the biodegradable leaf bags since paper grocery bags have gone the way of 8 track tapes and cars that you could maintain yourself). Best of all, at the end of the season, the paper and straw can be turned into the soil, adding valuable organic matter. I owe a debt of gratitude to whoever wrote that letter. They saved me many hours of weeding over the years; a task I can certainly live without. Thanks for the read.

STARS FOR OUR TROOPSCAPITAL REGION – Stars for our Troops is a grassroots orga-nization that is growing fast across the USA. We take retired American Flags with embroidered 2 inch Stars, remove the Stars, put the Star in a pouch with a statement the reads: “I am part of our American fl ag that has fl own over a home in the U.S.A. I can no longer fl y. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nurs-ing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. Families and friends need to contact us so we can share the Stars with their loved ones. Dona-

EASY WAYS TO MODERNIZE YOUR 10-YEAR-OLD VEHICLE(NAPS)—New cars offer the latest in infotainment, safety and convenience but what if you aren’t in the market for a new ride? Fortunately, there are many aftermarket products that can add value to a car you’ve already paid off, and are often more advanced than factory-installed features on the road today.
“The aftermarket offers an array of options for car and truck owners,” said Chris Kersting, presi-dent and CEO of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA). The trade association represents the $33 billion automotive specialty equipment industry that includes thousands of products that are available to enhance a vehicle’s styling, performance, comfort and conve-nience. “Install these items into your older vehicle and you’ll have all the latest technologies to enhance your driving—and your passengers’—experience.”
Bluetooth
Integrating wireless functionality from your phone and other devices is an easy way to add convenience and, most importantly, a safer hands-free experience to your daily drive.
The simplest and least expensive option is a stand-alone universal Bluetooth kit that works with any car stereo and comes with a small speaker and microphone. This option does not require any modifications but is limited to hands-free calling only.
A New Receiver/Head Unit
The best option for adding Bluetooth calling and streaming is to purchase a new stereo with this technology built in. If music is your major motivation, you won’t have to retire your old CDs, as there are plenty of units that still offer a disc player as well as a USB port to connect with your phone or with a portable drive for MP3/WMA playback, and an auxiliary input for universal connectivity.
Sound
Now that your trusty transportation has some new hands-free audio features, it’s probably time to upgrade the sound quality in your ride. Go for speakers that fit in your car’s pre-exist-ing mounts, and add an amplifier and subwoofer for a clear and dynamic audio experience. Make sure you match your new speakers to the correct speaker wire for peak performance.
Heads Up Display (HUD)
Aftermarket Heads Up Display (HUD) units mount to the dashboard in front of the steering wheel and project data onto a transparent screen or a transparent film mounted on the wind-shield in your line of sight. This allows you to receive turn-by-turn navigation, vehicle speed information, and lane guidance instructions while keeping your eyes on the road.
Portable Navigation Device
Smartphones offer plenty of navigation options, but the latest portable navigation devices (PND) go beyond simple driving directions. PNDs offer voice command, spoken direction, large screens, and real-time traffic updates. Many units even search points of interest from Yelp, Google, Trip-Advisor and more.
Blind Spot Monitoring
Relatively new even in the latest vehicles, blind spot monitoring systems detect cars that may be out of your line of sight. The kit relies on two front and two rear sensors mounted to the bumper that work together to detect a vehicle in your blind spot, and an LED display inside your vehicle lights up on the appropriate side when one is detected. An audible alarm will then sound if you then signal and intend to change lanes.
Rearview Camera
Rearview cameras help drivers see what is behind them when the car is in reverse. A complete setup includes a camera mounted to the rear of the vehicle, a receiver, and a display mounted on the dashboard. Major manufacturers of aftermarket head units offer camera add-on pack-ages to their receivers with in-dash display, and some GPS units offer the add-on as well, mak-ing the update inexpensive and easy to install.
Vehicle Tracking and Telematics
There are a few products that offer detailed information about your vehicle via real-time no-tifications from your smartphone, including driving habits, fuel, engine and battery monitor-ing, and engine trouble code translation. The device will even send mobile alerts when the car arrives at a certain location, travels beyond a preset GPS “fence” or exceeds a specified speed limit...ideal for anyone who wants to keep tabs on their 10-year-old car when others are behind the wheel.

TIPS TO MAKE FAMILY SUMMER
EXCURSIONS A BREEZE
(StatePoint) Shuttling the family from place to place
is hard enough on a typical day, but when you are out of town for a summer trip or even just out for the day, keeping your ducks in a row can be even more challeng-ing.
Here a few ways to make your excursions this summer a total breeze.
• Use mapping technologyto plan your route ahead of time -- but be flexible. Smart-phone apps that update in
real time can keep you in-formed about road closures, bumper-to-bumper traffic and other road trip snafus to minimize your stress on the road.
•While you may need only
your thoughts to keep you occupied, don’t forget to pack plenty of diversions for the kids. Book, toys and games will help keep the tired phrase “are we there yet?” at bay on road trips and
keep kids entertained.
• There`s nothing quite asannoying as watching your smartphone’s battery slowly dwindle down, especially when you need it most. Look for a combination AC adapt-er and travel battery charger in one, such as Panasonic`snew QE-AL102K and QE-AL201K, which wrap the two into a hybrid mobile charger that can keep you juiced even when you are nowhere near an outlet.
• If you are going on alengthy road trip, get your car inspected before de-parting. Be sure your car is equipped with a spare tire and the basic tools needed to handle common roadside issues.
• Take your family’s dietaryrestrictions into consider-ation when you are traveling somewhere new. Will there be menu options for fin-icky eaters? Some research ahead of time can save you time when the kids are fuss-ing. If need be, don’t forget a bagged lunch for the road in a cooler, along with favorite snacks and drinks.
When you are on the go this summer, have fun with con-fidence. Don’t leave home without the tools, technolo-gy and knowledge you need to enjoy the experience.

HIGH TECH CAN MAKE DRIVING SAFER(NAPS)—More than 420,000 people are injured each year in motor vehicle accidents involving distracted drivers—but technology can help reduce your risk by improving your awareness behind the wheel, no matter how old your vehicle may be.
Safe Solutions
Safe driving starts with smart decisions. The Consumer Elec-tronics Association (CEA) firmly believes safety is paramount in a moving vehicle, and a driver’s highest priority must be maintaining safe control at all times. That’s why CEA supports legislation that bans texting while driving and places strict limits on the use of electronics by novice drivers. CEA also developed the Innovating Safety campaign to help consum-ers and improve awareness and understanding of the broad spectrum of safety-enhancing technologies available today.
Distraction Behind the Wheel
All kinds of things can distract you when you’re driving—us-ing your phone, daydreaming, talking to your passengers or paying attention to anything other than the road ahead. Statistically speaking, newer drivers are over-represented in fatality and injury crash statistics, and studies have found that teens are more prone to dangerous distractions while driving.
Innovation Can Improve Drive Safety
For parents wondering what they can do to improve their teenagers’ driving habits, there are all kinds of products avail-able to help. Some products limit cell phone usage and tex-ting abilities and create incentives for good driving behavior. Other devices connect you to your car, even when you’re not
in it, letting parents access information on their teens’ driving habits, set “safety zones” and monitor vehicle location.
More advanced driver-mon-itoring solutions track the driver’s eye movements and whether the driver’s hands are on the wheel. This tech-nology can then initiate corrective action when the
driver’s behavior appears to match that of a distracted person. Other high-tech safety products include blind spot indicators, back-up cameras and crash avoid-ance systems that help driv-ers increase their awareness of other cars, pedestrians and dangerous obstructions. Additionally, voice-activated GPS navigational systems enhance situational aware-ness.
New-Car Tech For Your Old-Tech Car
The primary vehicles for most American drivers are more than 11 years old. For-tunately, many technology companies are developing a broad range of aftermarket devices that can be installed seamlessly in most cars to enhance the safety.
For expert advice on solu-tions and installation for your vehicle, look for retail-ers whose installers carry the CEA Mobile Electronics Cer-tified Professionals (MECP) certification. There are more than 3,500 MECP installers in the U.S. These experts have the training to ensure you pick the right solution and the skill to install it correctly.
After all, smart driving starts with smart decisions.
