HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE CHILDREN WHO STUTTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - Stuttering is a frustrating and embarrassing problem for millions of peo-ple, but it can be especially tough on elementary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stuttering. They talk openly about the teasing they face from class-mates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about themselves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stuttering Foundation is available free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

It is always amazing to watch the plants spring into action after dawdling through most of spring. Ive got a couple of weeping purple beeches that seemed to go from buds to leaves in 2 days! What a show! I was just outside enjoying one of the subtler pleasures of spring; the sound of a breeze rustling through the leaves of a large maple tree. Its one of those things that you didnt even realize that you missed until you hear it again after so many months. Another thrill was the arrival of our resident hummingbirds whove finally returned from their southern home down Mexico way. I feel privileged that theyve chosen my area to nest and mate. My hummingbird feeders are filled and ready. Ah, the little pleasures of spring. One thing that wasnt so pleasurable was watching my fifteen varieties of daffodils flower and go by. This reminds me that a lot of folks will forget to recharge their spring flower bulbs at this time of year and will be disappointed next year when they get fewer or no flowers on their daffodils, tulips and other hardy bulbs. This is the time to take action. Let me briefly give you the lowdown. Think of your spring flowering bulbs as rechargeable batteries. In spring, after their flowering cycle is finished, the bulb/batteries are discharged. To get the best show possible next spring you need to recharge them. How? The first step is to snip off the flower stem. Cut the flower stem off down low; as near the base as possible. The reason we do this is to prevent the plant from putting any energy into producing seeds. For the plant, this is their most important goal so theyll use up a lot of energy to produce seeds. We have no need for the seeds and so, by removing the flower stem where the seeds are forming, well cause the plant to send all that energy back down to the bulb/battery where its stored for future use. Make sure that you dont remove any of the leaves when youre snipping off the flower stems. Think of the leaves as solar collectors that gather energy from the sun and send it down to the bulb/battery where its stored for future use. The final step is to feed your bulbs/batteries. Get your hands on some gentle, high phosphorus, granular plant food. I like the Espoma brands Flower-tone. Its gentle and Ill use it not only for the bulbs but all my flowering perennials as well. Poke some holes in the soil with a pipe about as deep as you planted the bulbs, then fill the holes 2/3 up with the Flower-tone. This is where the roots are that will be able to absorb the nutrients. You could scatter the food on the surface and some of it will eventually make it down to the roots but I like to poke the holes so I can get the food where the bulbs/batteries can make the best use of it. Dont get too close to the stems but insert your food 3 or 4 away. High phosphorus foods will also provide extra energy that your bulbs/batteries will store for future use. Thats it; just three easy steps to insure that your bulbs/batteries have stored plenty of energy so youll have more flowers next year instead of less. 1. Snip off the flower stems. 2. Leave the leaves. 3. Feed them with a gentle, high phosphorus, granular food. After the leaves have turned all yellow it means that theyve stored as much energy as the bulbs/batteries can hold and its O.K. to trim them off as well. If you find the gradually yellowing leaves unattractive, try masking them by planting them among other plants that fill in later. I like to plant daffodils among daylilies (or vice versa). The leaves are a similar shape and, as the daffodils are finishing, the daylilies are just coming into their own. Another topic I want to touch on this week is moss in the lawn. If this bothers you, you should be aware that the reason the moss took hold in the lawn is because the soil has gradually become acidic. There is a tendency for most soils to become acidic. Grass clippings, leaves and twigs decaying in the soil help make it more acidic. Lawn food applications and acidic rain also contribute. As the soil becomes acidic, it is harder for the grass to survive. As the grass (which prefers neutral soil) thins, the moss (which loves acidic soil) starts to take over. So how do we stop this vicious cycle? The answer is testing the soils pH and applying the amount of lime required to bring the pH of the soil back to neutral. Keeping the pH of the soil of your lawn at neutral (7.0) is, perhaps, the most important aspect of lawn care and, undoubtedly, the most overlooked. Besides discouraging moss, lime provides calcium and allows your lawn to make maximum use of any nutrients available. If you want to think of your lawn as a gasoline engine then lawn food would be the gasoline that makes the engine run. Lime would be the engine oil that makes sure all goes smoothly. Without oil, no amount of gasoline can make an engine run for too long. Without lime, eventually the lawn wont grow as well as it used to. Think of your soil pH test as the dipstick you need to determine youre how low your lawns pH is. These pH test kits are cheap and easy to use and, believe me, can save you a lot of time and money that youll spend on grass seed and fertilizer trying to repair a situation that could have been avoided. Lime wont kill moss but it will prevent it. Once its there youll have to rake it all out, apply lime, grass seed and a starter fertilizer and spend your time watering the grass seed constantly until it is established. Rest assured, if you care about your lawn, a pH tester is a bargain, and lime is cheap compared to lawn food and grass seed. Thanks for the read.

HOME ADDITIONS: UP OR OUT? Homeowners hoping to expand their homes are faced with a number of choices. One of the first they will have to make is which direction to take their expansion. Homeowners can choose to expand horizontally, increasing the footprint of their homes, or vertically.

Professionals urge prospective remodelers to consider the pros and cons to each expansion option, including which direction to build.

One of the first considerations is land space. Building horizontally will cut into yard space that you may have already earmarked for a pool, shed or another feature. Proximity to neighbors and the dimensions of your property will also help to determine if expanding horizontally is

    a good idea.

Building codes and neighborhood requirements also must be considered before making any reno-vations. Some municipalities may have rules in place that govern renovations. Add-ons may not be allowed to exceed certain height limits, nor may structures be built within a certain number of feet of property lines.

Homeowners who choose to build upward will have to contend with work crews and other staff being in their homes. Raising the roof may require vacating the premises at a certain point. Also, ex-

tensive renovation work will be needed on the lower level of the home, whether its to shore up the structure, clean up after the renovation or repair ceilings, drywall and other compo-nents where levels meet.

It may seem easier to expand outward, but this requires laying additional foundation for the

new building structure. Bringing in digging equipment and masons can be costly. When you build vertically, such foundation work may not be necessary if your home is structurally sound and can bear the weight of the addition.

Building out typically involves the least disruption to your life and the existing space. Home-owners should keep in mind that any renovation will require permits or variances. In addition, if the project increases the value of the home, home insurance costs and property taxes may rise. Only after all considerations have been weighed should a project begin.

Homeowners need to consider whether to build up or out when they add on to homes.

EXPLORE THE ALTERNATIVES TO GRANITE COUNTERTOPSGranite has long been a popular countertop material for homeowners looking to combine functionality with aesthetic appeal in their kitchens. But granite is no small investment, and homeowners looking to refurbish their kitchens should know there are a multitude of coun-tertop materials available to those working on a budget or those who simply want to give their kitchens a different look.

Solid wood: Wood countertops create a warm, homey interior. Butcher block counters are

less expensive than granite and do not necessarily need to be ordered from a speciality re-tailer. But wood can stain and dent and can even burn when hot kitchenware is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeowners maintain the appearance of their wood counters for years to come.

Marble: Marble tends to be less expensive than granite without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. However, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Dili-gence in wiping away spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is necessary for those who choose marble countertops.

Soapstone: This is a natural stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can sometimes have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than granite, soapstone is still high-density and will hold up well. Its impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals will not damage it.

Quartz: Quartz is a manufactured product made of stone aggregate and polymers com-pressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but requires less work to main-tain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonporous material, so it will not need routine sealing and resealing.

Glass: Glass countertops are back-painted, so homeowners can order just about any color they want. Glass will be tempered, so it is safe and heat-resistant. Glass can scratch, though, so it is not as impervious as other materials.

Concrete: Concrete is another material that can be colored to match homeowners whims. Concrete is relatively inexpensive compared to other countertop materials, but it can crack or chip.

While granite is a popular countertop material, homeowners who want something new have many additional options at their disposal.

POWER TOOL SAFETY TIPSPower tools can dramatically reduce the time it takes to complete home improvement projects. Professional contrac-tors regularly rely on power tools for cutting and sanding, and many do-it-yourself renovators follow suit and invest in power tools to help get the job done. But power tools, in spite of their usefulness, are not without risk. According to the Work Safe Center, power tool injuries account for as many as 400,000 emergency room visits in the United States each year. Power nailers, chain saws and table saws account for the greatest number of injuries. Keeping safe is of the utmost pri-ority when using power tools. Heres how:

Read all manufacturers instructions and guidelines before use.

Keep your tools clean and in proper operating condition.

Use the right tool for the job.

Always wear eye protection, such as safety glasses or gog-gles.

Wear standard cotton or leather work gloves to protect hands.

Consider the use of earplugs or earmuffs with loud power tools.

Dont use power tools in proximity to flammable vapors, dust or construction materials.

Always check that wires are kept away from blades.

Maintain a tight grip on a tool.

Do not overreach when using tools, and maintain balance.

Pay attention when working with any power tool.

Only use attachments specifically recommended for the power tools and ensure proper installation.

Unplug all power tools during breaks and anytime when tools are not in use.

    Routinely inspect tools for damage.

Keep tools stored in secure locations when not in use.

Biosolids are an organic amendment available to gardeners. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, biosolids are carefully treated and monitored residuals formed at sewage treatment facilities. They may be recycled into fertilizers to stimulate plant growth. Biosolids may help reduce the need for chemical fertilizers. Biosolids can be safe to use, but homeowners should be cautious about heavy metal content, pathogen levels and salts. Rely on only Class A biosolids, which have been treated to reduce the bacterial content and are approved for use in production agriculture. Home gardeners may want to avoid bio-solids in vegetable gardens because of the potential for heavy metal content seeping into the produce.

DID YOU KNOW? Homeowners looking for a rustic or weathered look for their flooring often rely on terracotta tile, a durable and versatile material that many feel gives a home a warm and earthy feel. Terracotta tile comes in various finishes and has proven resistant to the growth of mold and bacteria. However, because it is very porous, terracotta tile absorbs moisture quickly, which means it must be sealed somewhat regularly to prevent cracking, discoloration and staining. It also must be sealed especially well when installed in a kitchen, as terracotta floor tiles are susceptible to damage from acids, alcohol, oils, and vinegar. Installation of terracotta flooring is labor intensive and is therefore best left to professionals.

VEGGIE GARDEN TIPS FOR BEGINNERSPlanting a vegetable garden can be a worthwhile endeavor for anyone who has an available patch of land. Gardens need not take up much space, and even apartment dwellers with-out yards can plant small gardens in containers they place on terraces or window boxes.

Although establishing a garden is easy enough, beginners may make a few mistakes along the way. Those who already have paved the garden way before can offer novice garden-ers some worthwhile tips.

One of the first decisions novice gardeners must make is which crops to grow. This will help determine how much land you will need and which supplies or soil amendments will be necessary. According to The Old Farmers Almanac, a com-mon error for beginners is planting too much and more than anyone could ever consume, so its best to start small and be proud of that small garden.

Plants such as peppers, squash and tomatoes produce throughout the season, so you may not need many plants to provide for your needs. Less prolific plants may require a greater investment to produce a similar yield.

Locate your garden in an area that gets adequate sun. Many vegetables need between six and eight hours of sunlight per day. Without enough light, they will not bear as much and could be susceptible to insect infestation. Vegetables and fruit also need plenty of water because theyre not very drought-tolerant, so keep gardens close to a water source.

Another good tip is to locate the garden near the house or barbecue grill. This way you can easily harvest fresh produce and use it when cooking.

Soil preparation is also key. Till the soil and remove debris like rocks, sticks and hard clumps of dirt. Work with organic mate-rial, such as manure or compost. Apply mulch after planting to help maintain moisture levels in the soil.

Plant the tallest crops at the rear of your garden bed. Work forward with shorter crops. Try to leave a foot or more be-tween planting rows.

Its easy to get a garden started and enjoy fresh food for many months to come.

THE POTENTIALLY HARMFUL EFFECTS OF MOLD IN YOUR HOMEThe presence of mold in a home is a sight few homeowners want to see. In addition to being unsightly, mold found in a home can be unhealthy.

While certain cleaners may prove effective at removing mold, homeowners who want to re-move existing mold growths and prevent future growths may benefit from gaining a greater understanding of mold and why it grows inside homes.

    What is mold?

Mold is a blanket term used to describe fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. Many species of mold exist, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that some estimates suggest there may be more than three hundred thousand different species of mold. Common indoor molds include cladosporium, penicillium, alternaria, and aspergillus.

    Which conditions promote mold growth?

Homeowners may notice that mold tends to grow in specific areas of their homes but not in others, and thats because molds grow best in certain conditions. Warm, damp and humid conditions, such as those found in poorly ventilated bathrooms and basements, make ideal breeding grounds for mold.

What are the effects of mold exposure?

Molds are a natural and resilient part of the environment, but mold growth indoors should be addressed and avoided. Mold spores are tiny and invisible to the naked eye, and when these spores attach to wet surfaces, they begin to grow. Once these spores begin to grow, they can then affect people in various ways. Roughly a decade ago, the Institute of Medicine

found sufficient evidence to support a link between exposure to indoor mold and respiratory tract issues, such as coughing and wheezing in people who were otherwise healthy. The same report found that mold may trigger asthma symptoms among people with asthma and hy-persensitivity pneumonitis, a disease in which the lungs are inflamed when a person breathes in certain dusts he or she is allergic to, in people susceptible to that condition.

Some people who do not have a preexisting condition can still be sensitive to molds. When exposed to mold, such people may experience symptoms like nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation.

How can exposure to mold be decreased at home?

Adequate ventilation is arguably homeowners best friend with regard to reducing mold exposure at home. Control humidity levels in areas of the home that tend to be warm and

humid, such as the kitchen and bathroom. Install an exhaust fan in the kitchen and bathroom and a window in the bathroom if yours does not already have one.

The CDC recommends that humidity levels be no higher than 50 percent throughout the day, and an air conditioner and dehu-midifier can help you keep indoor humid-ity levels in check, especially during the summer when humidity levels tend to be their highest of any time during the year.

When renovating your home, remove any existing carpeting from bathrooms and basements and toss out soaked carpets or upholstery as well. If painting will be part

of your home renovation projects, add mold inhibitors to paints prior to application.

Mold that grows inside a home is unsightly and potentially unhealthy. But concerned home-owners can take several reactive and proactive steps to reduce existing mold growths and prevent them from returning in the future.

Poorly ventilated bathrooms are susceptible to mold growth.

RELIABLE REASONABLE RATES 10 YEARS EXPERIENCE GREAT REFERENCES

SECRETS TO KEEPING AN ORGANIZED SHED Despite other intentions, homeowners often turn their ga-rages into storage centers for random, little-used items, leav-ing little to no room for the tools and even vehicles that actu-ally belong in a garage. Such homeowners may turn to sheds to store their garage overflow and keep yard equipment at the ready, but storage sheds are not immune to clutter, and homeowners may find the very structure erected to keep them organized requires a bit of organization itself.

A well-organized shed can save homeowners time and en-ergy, as its easy to abandon or delay a project if you cant find that pair of work gloves you stashed. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful loca-tions or tossed in the trash if theyre no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for do-nations and a third for garbage. Take inventory of what you have so you know whether youre missing any items or you have something and do not need to purchase another.

Now that the entire shed is empty, you can assess just how much room you have. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equip-ment.

Shelving, racks, pegboards and any other materials that en-able you to hang or store items off the floor are good invest-ments. Visit your nearby home improvement retailer to find items that can simplify your storage. You also may be able

to put scrap wood to use to make your own storage shelves or a work bench. Ex-tra kitchen cabinets can be installed in the shed to orga-nize additional items.

In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased.

Dont forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools, such as rakes and shovels, on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible.

You also can repurpose storage solutions designed for other areas of the home. For example, magnetic knife holders can be mounted to a shed wall to keep paintbrushes organized. These holders also can be used to keep many small metal tools tidy. Metal funnels can hold twine and string. Thread through the narrow end of the funnel for a handy dispenser.

Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers and other potentially danger-ous substances should be stored high up to keep pets and

    children safe.

Make sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items. Roll in the lawnmower, wheelbarrow and any other cumbersome items. Now that more things are mounted vertically, you should find that you have more area to move around.

Taking the time to clean and organize a shed can help make anyone more productive.

Hanging items vertically frees up more space in a shed or garage.

COMMON MISTAKES MADE ON HOME RENOVATION PROJECTSHome improvement projects can turn a house into a home. Homeowners plan scores of reno-vations to transform living spaces into rooms that reflect their personal tastes and comforts.

Homeowners going it alone may find things do not always go as planned. In fact, a Harris Interactive study found that 85 percent of homeowners say remodeling is a more stressful undertaking than buying a home. But homeowners about to embark on home improvement projects can make the process go more smoothly by avoiding these common pitfalls.

Failing to understand the scope of the project

Some homeowners dont realize just how big a commitment they have made until they get their hands dirty. But understanding the scope of the project, including how much demolition and reconstruction is involved and how much time a project will take can help homeowners avoid some of the stress that comes with renovation projects. For example, a bathroom reno-vation may require the removal of drywall, reinforcement of flooring to accommodate a new bathtub or shower enclosure and the installation of new plumbing and wiring behind walls. So such a renovation is far more detailed than simply replacing faucets.

    Not establishing a budget

Homeowners must develop a project budget to ensure their projects do not drain their fi-nances. If your budget is so inflexible that you cant afford the materials you prefer, you may want to postpone the project and save more money so you can eventually afford to do it right.

Without a budget in place, it is easy to overspend, and that can put you in financial peril down the line. Worrying about coming up with money to pay for materials and labor also can induce

stress. Avoid the anxiety by setting a firm budget.

    Making trendy or overpersonal improvements

Homeowners who plan to stay in their homes for the long run have more free reign when it comes to renovating their homes. Such home-owners can create a billiards room or paint a room hot pink if they so prefer. However, if the goal is to make improvements in order to sell a property, overly personal touches may make a property less appealing to prospective buyers. Trends come and go, and improvements can be expensive. If your ultimate goal is to sell your home, opt for renovations that will look beautiful through the ages and avoid bold choices that may only appeal to a select few buyers.

Forgetting to properly vet all workers

It is important to vet your contractor, but dont forget to vet potential subcontractors as well. Failing to do so can prove a costly mistake. Contractors often look to subcontractors to perform certain parts of a job, and it is the respon-sibility of homeowners to vet these workers.

    Expecting everything

    to go as planned

Optimism is great, but you also should be a realist. Knowing what potentially could go wrong puts you in a better position to handle any problems should they arise. The project might go off without a hitch, but plan for a few hiccups along the way.

    Overestimating DIY abilities

Overzealous homeowners may see a renovation project in a magazine or on television and immediately think they can do the work themselves. Unless you have the tools and the skills necessary to do the work, tackling too much can be problematic. In the long run, leaving the work to a professional may save you money.

Home improvements can be stressful, but homeowners can lessen that stress by avoiding common renovation mistakes.

DID YOU KNOW?Neem oil is a naturally oc-curring pesticide that can be used to combat a host of landscaping pests and diseases. Azadirachtin is an active component in neem oil that can be extracted to repel and kill pests. Studies have shown that neem oil is nearly nontoxic to bees, birds, fish, and wildlife. In ad-dition, neem oil has no link to cancer or other diseases, making it a safe insecticide when applied correctly. When consumed by insects, including grubs, insecticides

made from neem oil can make those insects cease feeding or reduce their feed-ing, helping to prevent the spread of lawn problems associated with certain in-sect infestations. In addition, neem oil can hinder the mat-uration process of larvae by interfering with insect hor-mone systems, which can prevent them from breed-ing. As is the case when applying any pesticides, parents should be mindful of their children after apply-ing neem oil. Though stud-ies have not found children

are more sensitive to neem oil than adults, parents may want to err on the side of caution and prevent their children from playing in ar-eas of the yard where neem oil was recently applied.

DID YOU KNOW?Damage to a lawn may be in-dicative of various problems. Everything from insects to rodents to the family pet may be responsible for caus-ing burnt patches, holes and other eyesores. Getting to the bottom of the problem is the first step in remediation. Burning and discoloration of the lawn is often a result of high concentrations of dog urine pooling in one area. Diluting the urine by hos-ing down areas of the lawn can clear up many problems. Birds, raccoons, skunks, moles, and other rodents may feed on grubs that re-side just under the thatch of the lawn, and animals may tear up lawns in search of this delicacy. Treating the grub problem usually al-leviates damage caused by animals. Mole crickets are another common lawn de-stroyer. These insects resem-ble crickets, but they burrow beneath the turf to feed on plant roots. The mole crick-ets can push up channels of turf as they burrow, expos-

ing roots to the elements and causing the grass to die. Get-ting rid of the insects can revitalize the lawn.

HOW TO HANDLE WEED GROWTHHomeowners who take pride in their lawns and gardens know just how problematic weeds can be. Weeds can make otherwise well-manicured and thriving lawns and gardens appear unhealthy and ill-kempt. But homeowners dont have to sit back and accept weeds as an inevitable byproduct of warm weather. The following are a handful of ways homeowners can handle weed growth so all their hard work is not masked by unwelcome weeds.

Pull weeds after watering. It might seem odd to water weeds, but watering weeds can actu-ally make it easier to pull them out so they never return. When you pull weeds from soggy soil, you can more easily pull weeds entire root system from the ground. That means you arent just pulling the stems and leaves, but the entire weed from the ground.

Lay mulch. Mulch can benefit a garden in many ways, not the least
