“Accurate, Accredited, A ordable”What do you like to do with your free time? Relax, read, take a nap... We doubt you answered “Do my taxes!” The IRS estimates that between accumulating necessary paperwork, navigating current tax laws and fi lling out the required forms, the average taxpayer in the US will spend approximately 16 hours preparing their 2013 tax return. In some cases the time can well exceed this estimate. Accutax Income Tax Services is glad to help you understand the complex tax laws that make up our current tax system. In addition to helping you pay as little tax as possible, we can also make suggestions which will reduce your taxes going forward or help you save more for the future. Tom Kubiak, an IRS Enrolled Agent with more than 20 years tax preparation experience, is the owner of Accutax, and is always willing to help local taxpayers work to reduce the amount of tax they are paying. “Often”, says Tom, “simple deductions are overlooked which could result in signifi cant tax savings. Combine the tax savings with increasing your retirement contributions and you will make a measurable change on your personal fi nancial picture.”Tom and his associates at Accutax are glad to look over your situation and make some suggestions to help you save. Each of the staff at Accutax have passed the rigorous IRS Registered Tax Return Preparer exam, which demonstrates their knowledge of current tax law. Although many think that using a tax preparer can be expensive, Tom is proud to charge less than the major fi rms and often his fee is not much more than would be paid to a software company for a self-prepared return. Additionally, Tom and his staff are available year round and are happy to offer advice or tax planning ‘on the house’. Tom says: “We never charge our clients for consultations. In fact, we encourage them to make an appointment and talk to us before they make any fi nancial decisions.”Call 893-2683 and make an appointment now for a free review of your last three year’s tax returns. They will let you know if any changes to those returns would benefi t you. Or make an appointment to have your 2013 tax return prepared. If you are a new client, mention this article and receive $ 50 off the cost of your tax preparation for 2013. Additionally, this year if you refer fi ve (5) new clients to our offi ce you will receive an Ipod mini as a thank you gift! (See our offi ce for more details)

But before those doors will open, an equally anticipated event is creating buzz among local bachelors and bachelorettes who are ready for a charity auction that could land them a date with a dream-boat. On February 27 at 6 p.m. at The Paddock Lounge, 12 single guys and gals from the Capital Region will show up to walk the red carpet for a crowd, who will be ready to bid some dough. It’s all for the purpose of raising much-needed funds for Gateway House, with the potential added bonus of meeting a mate. Minimally, the highest bidder will receive a gift card to take their contestant out for some fun at one of several local businesses that donated. A $10 donation at the door from attendees would be appreciated. This year’s auc-tion emcees are Mark Mulholland of WNYT and Bo Goliber of Fingerpaint. Candidates include a Director of Business Op-erations, a producer, a business owner, a lawyer and a model, just to name a few. For the week leading up to the auction, folks can log on to Gateway’s Facebook page to get the scoop on the candidates. Even if attendees aren’t planning on bidding, donations will be accepted at the door, with all proceeds benefitting the cause. For more information on the auction or to make a donation to Gateway House of Peace, please visit www.gatewayhouseofpeace.org.

RoccoRocco is a sweet boxer/bulldog mix (DNA test) who weighs ~
50 lbs. He’s neutered, completely vetted, and microchipped. Rocco loves to curl up on the couch and enjoys when his human is nearby. He’s low key; in fact, he can seem a bit aloof at first, but only because he needs time to trust that you will not give up on him. Rocco is housebroken
JulietteJuliette is a 3 year female/spayed
Lab. mix weighing 33 lbs. She’s very sweet, full of wiggles & kisses, up to date on vaccinations
and would make a great addition to your family!
For additional adoptable pets, volunteer opportunities and low
cost spay/neuter info visit H.O.P.E. online @ www.hopeanimalrescue.org
and will let you know when he needs a potty break. A fenced-in yard is a must because Rocco deserves to run and play outside. Rocco
should be an only pet - he needs to be with a family that focuses solely on him. In fact a one-on-one situation or an older couple might be best for him. He’s smart and affectionate and will be devoted to you if you give him a chance. To learn more about Rocco, please call Joette @ 518.681.1700 or, to fill out an online Adoption Application,

Fergie & Reuben
Esmeralda came in half frozen to death with her kitten Kirby. She
is a beautiful and sweet lady who loves her loving. Kirby is a special need kitten because he has a birth defect in his back legs and cannot
walk normally because of it. He sort of hops like a bunny and fol-
lows you around wherever you go.
Reuben and Fergie are from Vidalia Animal Control
He would do best in a home without stairs or with carpeted stairs. They both have been checked by our vet, de-wormed, given shots
and are ready for a nice, toasty, forever home. (They do not have to go together)
They seem to be bulldog/lab mix 10 week old pups.
very sweet, laid back pups. They have first shots, have been
de-wormed and vet checked.

LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF
NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC off ers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your fi ling status and number of children. Workers without
children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple fi ling jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefi t. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and fi ling requirements must be met. You must fi le a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to fi le. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Pete Bardunias, President/CEO, the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County
Remember The Heart This February
This month we think of hearts, both literally and figu-ratively, so let’s start with symbols of love. As cham-ber of commerce leader, I am so inspired by the couples who own businesses both large and small within our communities. A so-called “mom-and-pop” store implies that there is a couple working together, running the business (or multiple businesses!), man-aging employees, being involved in the community, yet finding time to raise a family and have a strong relationship with each other. For example, Gregg and Karen McGowan of Capital Interiorscapes have quietly built a strong business for over 22 years, yet volunteer to help at organizations such as the Chamber of Southern Saratoga County or the Malta Business and Professional Association. Also, attendees at the chamber’s Executive Institute program last fall got to see firsthand the re-ally great love story of Neil and Jane Golub, owners of Price Chopper Super-markets. They are known for their philanthropy throughout the capital region community, and it really was a blessing to spend over an hour with them as they shared insights into running a business and keeping the fire burning in their relationship. Happy Valentine’s Day to all the couples out there! But this February is also the time to think literally about hearts – its Heart Month,
a time to remember that Heart Disease is still the #1 killer of men and women, meaning it’s also the leading reason couples’ relationships are suddenly torn asun-der. My wife learned this all too well when she found herself rushing her husband to the emergency room some seven years ago. I came literally millimeters from death at the age of 39, of a very preventable and con-trollable disease. Diet, exercise, and genetics all play a role in curbing heart disease, but the key is to take action. If not for yourself, do it for the one who loves you.
About all February has to offer holiday-wise is Valentine’s Day. So, how did this romantic holiday come about?
It turns out that “romantic” is a very appropriate term since Valentine’s Day appears to have originated from an ancient Roman fertility rite. The Roman holiday Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th to honor the founders of Rome and also to purify the women of Rome. This was accomplished as the priests of Lupercalia struck the women (gently, I hope) with the skin of a freshly slain goat called a “februa”. How amusing that my least favorite month of winter is named after the skin of a dead goat…just something else to not like about February. Anyway, Roman tradition led them to believe that this grisly ritual would assure them fertility and easy childbirth.
Another aspect of this Roman holiday was the pairing of young boys and girls for the dura-tion of the festivities. Later, as Rome was in its decline, the emperor Claudius the Cruel banned all marriages and engagements in an attempt to keep his legions at full strength. An early Chris-tian priest named Valentine defi ed the emperor and continued to perform marriages in secret. Valentine was imprisoned for this transgression and died (or was executed according to other accounts) on February 14th in 270 A.D.
As Christianity spread, the original pagan fertility fl avor of the day was replaced with cel-ebration of romantic love with the now Saint Valentine functioning as the patron saint of love.
Learning all this about Valentine’s Day didn’t increase its appeal as far as I’m concerned and I’ve decided that I MUCH prefer our modern customs of exchanging cards and fl owers with our loved ones to celebrate our affection for one another. As I’ve said before (and you can quote me), I’m pretty sure that my wife would rather get fl owers than a fl ogging with a dead animal’s skin.
Naturally, roses are high on the list of preferred gifts for Valentine’s Day. Traditionally these are roses that are cut, bundled together with baby’s breath (now where did THAT name come from?) and presented to the object of our affection.
In the past I’ve presented such roses. These days however, I’m blessed with a wife who is as enamoured with fl ower gardening as I am. So, rather than giving my one true love cut rose that can only last a week or so, I prefer to give her a gift that refl ect the everlasting nature of my affection; a fl owering miniature rose bush!
I must not be the only one who prefers to give miniature roses bushes since they are now widely available at garden centers during Valentine’s week. What many who receive one as a gift fail to realize is that miniature roses, as delicate as they appear, are winter hardy. This means that they can be planted permanently in the garden (in a very sunny spot) and will endure our harsh winter and return each spring. I (or, rather, my wife) has one that will be starting its fi fth growing season this spring. One of the reasons these little beauties are so hardy is that they are NOT grafted roses. Grafted roses have the stems of one type of rose that’s not hardy grafted to the roots of another type that is hardy. If the stems (canes) are killed over winter, the shoots that emerge from below the graft will not have the same fl owers as the grafted canes.
Miniature roses aren’t grafted. This means that, even if the stems are killed over winter, the roots will send up new growth that will produce fl owers in abundance when summer rolls around. Remember that miniature roses that are sold on Valentine’s Day have been grown in greenhouses to produce fl owers for the holiday. You’ll need to keep them growing on a sunny windowsill and wait until it’s nice and warm (June) before you transplant them into your garden. They’ll probably lose some of their leaves after the fl owers fi nish. Don’t overreact and over water when this happens. Just keep plucking off the spent fl owers and leaves and wait until planting time.
