Who wouldn’t want to experience the glamour and glitz of music’s glitterati? Well for one night only you can! Channel your inner rock star at the British Chamber of Commerce Annual Ball with the help of our little ‘rock star lifestyle guide’ that you’ll fi nd in this programme. with the band’s classic track, ‘We Will Rock You’ the top rock anthem of all time. And for those of us raised with Top of the Pops, magnifi cent!

As part of this evening’s celebrations, we’re supporting a local charity, the KELY Support Group (KELY) in Hong Kong. KELY is a bilingual local charity that offers non-judgmental, empathetic and confi dential support to young people between the ages of 14 to 24 who urgently need guidance in life. They offer the necessary confi dential advice needed to address the many concerns that adolescents and teenagers face. Let ‘s please give KELY our fi nancial support.

I’m very pleased that Standard Chartered Bank has continued as the title sponsor for the ninth year running. This indeed has been a fantastic association. An evening like this is not possible without the gracious and continued support of our sponsors, members and supporters. My sincere gratitude to all who have helped in bringing this evening together.

Lastly, on behalf of the British Chamber, I would like to wish everyone the very best for the year ahead. Warmest wishes to all and have a wonderful night!

WELCOME A

lthough the economy is still problematic in the US and many parts of Europe, I’m delighted to see that strong growth continues in Asia Pacifi c. I’m also pleased to see Hong Kong developing into the central fi nancial centre for the

region. Hong Kong now sits fi rmly in the middle of the New York/London fi nancial highway – long may it continue.

As I’ve said previously, we have a great deal to be grateful to China for; especially for the continued massive investments into Hong Kong. Together with good foreign direct investments from global multinationals and an excellent performance from our local companies, we’re indeed riding the wave. We’re no longer looking for our future position as part of China; we’re developing very nicely as part of China, thank you very much.

On this note, I welcome you to this year’s Chamber Ball, without doubt the best in Hong Kong. Tonight we celebrate our success over the last year, and I’d like to thank all of you for your continued support in building our excellent British Chamber. Tonight is the right time to have fun and our theme “We Will Rock You” seems appropriate after a good business year.

When it comes to rock and roll, this is one area where the British are right at the top of the tree, with a history of producing fantastic rock bands such as the Rolling Stones, the Beatles, the Police, Genesis, Cliff Richard, Oasis and many many more. And not to forget Queen

On behalf of Standard Chartered Bank – a very warm welcome! Standard Chartered Bank is pleased to be the title sponsor of the British Chamber of Commerce Annual Ball for the ninth consecutive year.We are excited to be supporting this

event again and delighted to be spending a wonderful evening with our friends at the British Chamber of Commerce and our valued clients and guests.

Our support of this event refl ects our appreciation of the chamber’s and its members’ work, and our collective commitment to the Hong Kong business community of which we are proud to play an active part.

This evening’s fundraising will support the work and services provided by the KELY Support Group, in an effort to raise awareness of current trends of youth drug abuse and youth suicide in Hong Kong. Such services align well with the Bank’s commitment to support the wider community in Hong Kong and living to our brand promise – to be Here for good. Best wishes to all and enjoy the evening!

The hot dogThe “Haute Dog” is sold by Serendipity 3 in New York City on a foot-long pretzel bun. The sausage is beef cooked in white truffl e oil, topped with foie gras, dijon mustard, more truffl e, caramelized Vidalia onions, and heirloom tomato ketchup. It will currently cost you US$69.

The omeletteBreakfast is believed to be the best meal of the day. The Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata at Le Parker Meridien Hotel in New York City is all here to envisage the aforementioned ideal. The breakfast dish rolls in six eggs, the tail of a roasted Maine Lobster, 10 ounces of Sevruga caviar, a chive garnish. The caviar used in the Zillion Dollar Frittata supposedly comes from the Caspian Sea sturgeon and retails at US$80-US$170 an ounce. Get your day going for a mere US$1000. SI

THE NEED FOR SPEED

Rapper mogul Jay-Z was given a $2 million Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport for his 41st birthday last year by his lovely wife popstar Beyonce Knowles.

According to the Bugatti website, the Grand Sport is able to go 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and reaches a top speed of 253 miles per hour. As you’d expect from Bugatti, the Veyron has undergone a very thorough strengthening process to cope with the loss of the roof. The carbonfi bre

chassis has been redesigned around the windscreen pillars, strengthened in the sills and thickened behind the driver. The Grand Sport still gets a 987bhp 8.0-litre quad turbocharged W16 engine.

Jay-Z adds the Veyron Grand Sport to his already extensive car collections. Some of the cars he’s fortunate enough to own the keys to include a Maybach 62S, a Ferrari F430 Spider and a Pagani Zonda Roadster.

KELY Support Group

The KELY Support Group (KELY) is a non-government funded charitable organisation, providing support services for young people with drug and alcohol addictions and chronic low self-esteem.

KELY was established 20 years ago by a student who was facing her own drug and alcohol addictions. She found that speaking openly with her peers helped her overcome her issues.

With the concepts of peer support and self-help being our main approach, KELY is one of the few bilingual youth organizations in the city that provides services grounded in non-judgmental, empathetic and confidential values. KELY’s door is open to all young people in need, reaching out to an average of 35,000 local Chinese, English-speaking and ethnic minority youth a year.

Being young in the city has become increasingly difficult for our nearly one million Hong Kong youth. Many are facing life-threatening issues such as drug abuse, chronic low self-esteem, academic pressures, physical and mental abuse, poverty and suicidal thoughts.

According to the 2009 Report of the Task Force on Youth Drug Abuse, Hong Kong has seen an alarming rise in the trend of young abusers below the age of 21. The report states that there has been a steady increase with younger first-time abusers under the age of 16 as it has grown 57.8% from 2006 to 2008, compared to 29.5% for youth aged 16 to 20 over the same period. Another disturbing trend is the fact that an increasing number of young drug abusers are female, many of whom are first time users.

Based on the most recent statistics from the Narcotics Division, the newly reported drug abuse cases by age for 2010 is 10.5% for those under 16 years, 36.8 % for those between 16 to 20 years of age. The youngest reported drug abuser in Hong Kong was only 10 years of age.

Studies have shown that there are high rates of young people in the city suffering from chronic low self-esteem – one of the root causes of young drug abuse – who are more prone to making harmful decisions.

Dr. Francis Wing-lin Lee of, City University of Hong Kong says “vulnerable young people lacking self-esteem and aspiration are regarded as more at risk. They deserve transformational change to ease rising problems associated with property crime, violence, drugs, truancy and exclusion.”

KELY strongly believes that prevention is key when it comes to helping youth who are vulnerable and at risk of harming themselves and society. Our programmes and services includes multi-

media art projects, youth forums, harm reduction workshops, peer support, circus skills training, a youth helpline and youth discussion groups.

Proceeds from tonight’s event will go towards the There’s Always Tomorrow Youth Project aimed at helping vulnerable young people with self-esteem and suicide ideation. The youth suicide rate rose for those aged 15-24, from 8.9 per 100,000 in 2008 to 11.7 per 100,000 in 2010, despite the fact that suicide rates have declined in the general population in Hong Kong. This project aims at providing critical prevention education to empower our youth to make informed life decisions as well as help them reach their full potential.

‘LOVE IS THE DRUG’ ROXY MUSIC 1975

Studio 54 in New York was the disco in the 70s and 80s. Its opening night was a huge rockstar magnet attracting the likes of Michael Jackson, Mick and Bianca Jagger, Rod Stewart, Jerry Hall, David Bowie, Cher and

Elton John. At the club’s prime, doorman Mark Benecke became widely known for hand-selecting guests from the always-huge crowds outside, mixing beautiful “nobodies” with glamorous celebrities.

Studio 54 was notorious for the hedonism that occurred there and in 1978, owner Steve Rubell was quoted in the press as saying it had made $7 million in its first year and that “only the Mafia made more

money.” Almost as famous at the club’s logo was the infamous wall sign of the “Man in the Moon” inhaling cocaine from his silver spoon which hung in the club. Not all of the famous guests had to try to get in

through the main entrance. There was actually a

VIP entrance on the back side of the club, from 53rd Street where the staff and the true VIP’s got in!

When Led Zeppelin toured North America in ‘73 and ‘75 they chartered a private jet called The Starship – a former United Airlines Boeing 720B passenger jet, leased to bands. The aircraft

was the same type as used by commercial airlines, but its owners customised it to suit the whim of their clients. It cost $200,000 to install a bar, revolving arm chairs, a 30-foot-long couch, a television set and a video player, complete with a well-stocked video library. An electronic organ was built into the bar, and at the rear of the craft were two back rooms, one with a low couch and pillows on the fl oor, and the other, a bedroom, complete with a white fur bedspread and shower room. It even had a fi replace!

Flying on The Starship meant that Led Zeppelin didn’t have to use hotels, as they could travel to and from cities in the luxury of their jet. After a show, the band was driven by limousine from concert venue to airport, as depicted in Led Zeppelin’s fi lm The Song Remains the Same. The Rolling Stones, Allman Brothers and Alice Cooper were Starship clients. Peter Frampton was the last to charter it 1976.
