BALINESE FOLKLORE
The Legend Of Timun Mas
Once upon the time, not far from a jungle, lived a couple of farmers. They have been
married for many years, but still not have a child yet. Everyday they prayed to the God for a
child. One day a giant passed their house and heard what they were praying, “Hahahahaha...
on!t worry farmers. " can give you a child. #ut you have to give me that child when she is $%
years old.& 'aid the giant. The farmers were so happy, they didn!t thin( about the ris( of losing
their child later. 'o they agree to ta(e the offer without thin(ing first. Then, the giant gave them a
bunch of cucumber seed. “)lant this seed, and you will get a daughter.& 'aid the giant, “*eally+
Oh.. Than( you giant& -ried the farmers.
The couple planted the cucumber seed carefully, and the seed became into a big golden
cucumber. hen it was ripe, they pic(ed it. They cut out the big cucumber very carefully and
they found the beautiful baby inside. They were so happy. They named the baby Timun /as, or
Golden -ucumber. 0ears passing by and Timun /as grown into a beautiful girl, but her parent
happiness turned to fear when her $%th birthday came. They had to (eep their promise to the
giant. He was going to ta(e Timun /as away. #ut they didn!t want to lose their beloved
daughter. “Timun /as, ta(e this bag. "t can safe you from the giant.& 'aid her father. “hat do
you mean father+ " don!t understand.& 'aid Timun /as. *ight after that, the giant came into their house. “*un Timun /as 'afe your life& shounted her mother panic.
The giant was angry and (new that the farmers wanted to brea( their promise. He chased
Timun /as away. “Oh, no hat should i do now+& Timun /as was in panic, because the giant
getting closer and closer. Then, Timun /as opened the bag and threw a handfull of salt. "t
became sea. The giant had to swim to cross the sea, but unfortunately he safe from the sea. 1ater,
Timun /as threw some chillies and it became a jungle full of trees. The trees had sharp thorns,
and hurt the giant!s body. However, the giant was still able to chase Timun /as. "n the cruel
situations, Timun /as too( her last magic stuff. "t was a (ind of shrimp pasta, terasi. 'he threw it
and became a big swamp. The giant fell into it, he get panic because he couldn!t breathe, “hat
happend+ " -an!t breathe 2oooo...& 3t last he was drown and died.

JAYAPRANA AND LAYONSARI
A long time ago in the kingdom of Kalianget, a small village in North Bali,
there lived a powerfl king, whose name has long !een forgotten" It happened that
an epidemi# str#k the whole village, killing most of the villagers" One of the few
srvivors was a little !o$, #alled I N$oman %a$aprana, the onl$ person in his famil$
to have !een spared from the disease"
I N$oman %a$aprana had to live in a lonel$ and sad life" One da$ he met the
king&s #hief minister, who was a generos man" ' N$oman, will $o !e willing to live
in the pala#e and serve the king ( , ) o*ered the king&s aide" After a moment of
#onsideration, N$oman a##epted the o*er"
In the pala#e, %a$aprana grew p to !e#ome a handsome, !rave and
intelligent $ong man" At the age of + he was a!le to do ' Kakawin ), #hant and
sing poeti#al te-ts written in old %avanese langage" No wonder %a$aprana !e#ame
the apple of the king&s e$e" .he king thoght it was the time for %a$aprana to get
married" /e was to #hoose one of the king&s maids to !e his wife" /owever, none of
the maids appealed to him"
.he king then sggested that %a$aprana #old look for a girl of his own #hoi#e
otside the pala#e" /e went to the market and he saw a ver$ !eatifl girl, #alled Ni
N$oman La$onsari, and fell in love with her" La$onsari too later fell in love with %a$aprana" .he lovers were then engaged to get married"
Soon, the wedding #eremon$ took pla#e in the pala#e" Ever$!od$ was ver$
happ$" .he !ride and the !ridegroom appeared to !e a perfe#t #ople" /owever, the
king was not happ$ at all" /e was str#k !$ La$onsari&s !eat$, !e#ame #ra0il$
en#hanted !$ her and immediatel$ envied %a$aprana" In his heart he said, '
%a$aprana does not deserve this !eatifl woman" /e is onl$ m$ servant" I am a
king" La$onsari shall !e m$ wife" )
After the wedding part$, the king smmoned his #hief minister, 1aha 2atih
Sanggaling" /e e-pressed his anger to this lo$al man" ' La$onsari is too pre#iosfor a servant like %a$aprana" I want her,) he said angril$" .he king then had a
#nning idea to get rid of %a$aprana" ' 3o to .elk .erima 4 a small distri#t to the
west of the kingdom, and kill him there, !t $o mst not let La$onsari know a!ot
this,) he ordered"
.he following da$, %a$aprana got an order from the king" /e was to go to

.he following morning, %a$aprana and Sanggaling set o*, leaving the sad
La$onsari in tears" Arriving in the 6ngle of .elk .erima, %a$aprana did not see an$
enemies arond" /e asked Sanggaling a!ot the enemies" In response to the
9estion, Sanggaling prod#ed a letter the king had given him and asked
%a$aprana to read it" It read, ' %a$aprana, I have ordered $o to this pla#e !e#ase I
want to get rid of $o" Sanggaling is to #t $or head o* and La$onsari shall !e m$
wife") After reading the letter, %a$aprana reali0ed that the king&s order was 6st a
devilish trap" /e was lo$al and o!edient to the king" Sanggaling then killed him"
1eanwhile, in the pala#e, La$onsari was #onvin#ed that something !ad hadhappened to her hs!and, 6st as a 8o#k of #rows #ame and per#hed on the trees
arond the pala#e" 'La$onsari,) the king #alled her, 'I feel ver$ sorr$ that m$
!eloved man, $or hs!and, has died in the 5ght in .elk .erima" I nderstand how

where the kingdom&s weapons were stored" .he king ran after her 9i#kl$, !t it was

The Legend of Bali Strait
3 long time ago, lived a very rich family in #ali. The father was 'idi /antra. He wasvery famous for his supernatural power. He lived happily with his wife and his only child /ani(
3ng(eran. /ani( 3ng(eran was a spoiled son. He also had a bad habit. He li(ed to gamble.
#ecause of his bad habit, his parents soon became poor. They always advised /ani(
3ng(eran to stop his bad habit, but he never listened to them. "nstead he (ept on begging for his
parents to give him a lot of money.
The parents didn!t have the heart to see him begging. 'idi /antra then went to 3gung
/ountain. There lived a mighty dragon with his great supernatural power. He could provide

(new the prayers.
5/y name is 'idi /antra. " have a problem. /y son li(es to gamble. He has made me
poor. 3nd now he as(s a lot of money. 5 e6plained 'idi /antra after he met the dragon.
'idi /antra said the prayers and rang the bell. 'uddenly, jewelries came out from thedragon7s body. He was very happy and immediately brought the jewelries home. This time 'idi
/antra wanted /ani( 3ng(eran really to stop gambling.
The son then promised. #ut soon he bro(e the promise and he didn!t have any money
again. He heard that his father got the jewelries from the dragon living in 3gung /ountain. 'o
he stole the bell.
3fter arriving at 3gung /ountain, /ani( 3ng(eran rang the bell. The dragon (new him.
5" will give you anything you want but you have to promise to stop gambling. 5 then the dragon
gave him the jewelries.
'uddenly he had a bad idea. He wanted to (ill the dragon and stole all his jewelries. The
dragon (new his plan and with his great power he (illed /ani( 3ng(eran. 'idi /antra was very
sad. He as(ed the dragon to bring his son bac( to life. The dragon agreed but they had to live in
different places.3fter a few moments, /ani( 3ng(eran lived again. Then 'idi /antra used a stic( to
ma(e a big line between them on the ground.
4rom the line, water flowed. 'oon it became a river. 4inally it became a strait. "t
separated 8ava and #ali. )eople then named the strait as #ali 'trait.

ON=E pon a time in Bali, a man and his wife were pra$ing" .he$ have !een
