THE 2019 WORLD ECONOMIC FORUM GLOBAL RISKS REPORTindicates that the majority of companies are dependent on biodiversity, either directly or indirectly, through their supply chains.

5 of the 7 most likely and highest impact risks are environmental:

Failure of climate-mitigation and adaptation. 800 million people in over 570 cities will be vulnerable to rising sea levels in 2050.

Extreme weather events. In 2017, the consequences of these led to acute food insecurity for 39 million people in 23 countries.

Biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse. 200 million people depend on mangroves to sustain their way of life.

Man-made environmental disasters. Aquifer contamination due to waning stream flows means that over 650 million people in 50 cities may have less access to potable water.

Natural disasters have caused increased disruption of the production of goods and services (up 29 % since 2012).

urges all stakeholders and sectors to actively participate in and contribute to the process of developing this new biodiversity framework, to achieve the goal of Vision 2050, “Living in Harmony with Nature”: by 2050, biological diversity will be valued, conserved, restored and used in a rational manner, maintaining the ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and providing essential benefits for all.

The post 2020 framework must be sufficiently ambitious if we are to achieve vision 2050.

• The new targets should be aligned with SDG Agenda 2030 and other international targets.

• All sectors of society should be involved.

• Biodiversity should be integrated in the economy.

THE CONVENTION ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY (CBD)

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDG)An obligation to humanity and to the planet, assumed by 193 countries.

In 2016, J. Rockström and P. Sukhdev showed a new way of presenting the SDG´s, to prove that the natural capital goals (SDG 6 Clean water and sanitation, SDG 13 Climate action, ODS 14 Life below water and SDG 15 Life of terrestrial ecosystems) must be achieved in order to attain the other Goals.

• We are a society that is dependent on our oceans and soil for our food supply.

• Our safety and well-being are intrinsically linked to a stable, predictable climate.

SBBI FRAMEWORK - MAIN PROJECTS 2016-2018

AWARENESS RAISING AND VOLUNTEERISM

Environmental Volunteers

In 2016 and 2017, each year 5000+ volunteers took part in 90+ beach and river clean-up actions organized by De-cathlon in collaboration with 40+ stewardship entities and with the Fundación Biodiversidad. The goal of the initiative was to improve natural areas in spaces used for outdoor sports near Decathlon centers and stores, and to involve citizens in the conservation of our beaches and rivers.

Clean Beaches

The purpose of this program, organized by Unilever in collaboration with the Fundación Biodiversidad program ´Chiringuitos Responsibles´, was to highlight the importance of biodiversity and raise awareness of good practices among all beachgoers, particularly youth and children, while instilling values such as sustainibility, recycling and respect for the environment. TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

The CONAMA Business and Biodiversity Working Group

established in 2012, analyzes issues of interest to businesses in the process of integrating biodiversity in their management and business models The SBBI collaborated in the 2016 and 2018 editions, which focused on the mitigation hierarchy, and the role of the private sector in international strategies and biodiversity protection, respectively.

The workshop, ‘Identifying the needs of Spanish companies and organizations to address biodiversity in natural capital assessments’

organized by Ecoacsa Natural Capital and held at the Fundación Biodiversidad, served as a meeting point to help identify needs and opportunities for Spanish businesses, and as an aid in the Natural Capital Protocol improvement process. See more +

Publication ‘A Practical Guide to Ecological Restoration’

The Guide provides an operational approach to facilitate the incorporation of Ecological Restoration, as the optimal focus and methodology for ecosystem recovery. Over 100 experts contributed to the Guide, which is referenced in the National Strategy on Green Infrastructure, Connectivity and Ecological Restoration as a recommended methodolo-gy. The official presentation in November 2018 at Business and Biodiversity Forum, at COP14 at CBD Sharm El-Sheikh and at CONAMA, received extensive coverage in the press and within the sector. It has since been presented in other forums. See guide
