so the truth will be known

America, ini-promote niya ang sarili from 6DBB to 10th Degree Red Belt Grandmaster.

So far

The leadership of the WSB-WSBP will not tolerate and remain silent about this.

PANTAS MELITON S. GERONIMO JR. sent a letter to BARAS MAYOR KC ROBLES

forewarning her of the grand evil design of this person to change the history of Sikaran, citing

various legal reasons.

PANTAS GERONIMO retained a lawyer to handle the legal action to be initiated by the

WSBP against this person. (It’s about time.)

Name/Infringement.” Said SEC Decision states in part: “The use of the word “sikaran” and its

propagation as a distinct Filipino art of self-defense was started as early as 1958 by the group of

Page 4: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

Meliton C. Geronimo.” Take note: this person claiming to be the “Grandmaster and Hari ng

Sikaran, daw” was born in 1959 or one year after GM/SUPREMO GERONIMO started to

propagate Sikaran. ….” Complainant was able to prove that…the word “sikaran” was coined by

Meliton C. Geronimo, propagated it as a unique Filipino art of self-defense, with exhibitions and

tournaments conducted inside and outside the country…” “…The coinage of the word “sikaran”

and the use of the Filipino terminologies in the commands of “sikaran” as a martial art received

recognition and award from the Institute of National Language (Exhibits “C” and “C-7”).” SEC

ordered the Respondent (Ang taong nagpapanggap na “Grandmaster at Hari ng Sikaran.”) …”

that the use of the word sikaran be removed from the corporate name of “the Respondent.”

According to PANTAS MELITON S. GERONIMO, Jr., nais niyang balaan ang lahat na

At maaaring maidamay sa kasong isasampa bilang accomplice or co-

conspirator.

Sa Lesson Plan/Program of Instructions (POI) ng Sikaran Standardization prepared by the

PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD SIKARAN BROTHERHOOD PANTAS MELITON S.

tunay na History of Sikaran.

BALANCE BETWEEN GOOD DEEDS AND BAD DEEDS

By; Mantas-Marangal Emmanuel es Querubin

9th

Degree Red and White Belt, Reg. No. 87

Every good deed must be rewarded, like every bad deed must be penalized. Examples of

good deed in the World Sikaran Brotherhood, is the individual’s direct or indirect service and

support in the development, propagation, betterment, and growth of Sikaran. The individual must

have the respect for and of the community and possess a good moral character. The individual

must also have a high spiritual development and contributed to the advancement of Sikaran.

Fortunately, majority of Sikaranistas are of the good deed variety, making the World

Sikaran Brotherhood a brotherhood of God-fearing and God-loving group of individuals.

However, like everything else in this world, there is always an opposite element, in this

case a wrong deed. The failure to uphold the requirements of law, rules, duty or obligation are

wrong deeds or violations. Other examples of wrong deeds are contravention, breach,

infringement, misconduct in word or deed and any transgression. Please read the article entitled

“so the truth be known”, authored by Mantas-Dalubhasa Elpidio Seletaria, 8th

Degree Black

Belt WSB International Coordinator.

It is unfortunate that even with Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo’s legacy of courage,

dedication and excellent example of good deeds there is still some who chose to “reside” in the

other side of the fence. What is more disgusting is the fact that there is this individual who has a

consanguinity relation to the Supremo and yet alienate himself from the goals and aims of the

World Sikaran Brotherhood instituted by the Supremo himself as bequeathed by his father

Cipriano Geronimo, his grandfather Bonifacio Geronimo, and the several Sikaran masters before

him. Adding insult to injury, this no-good individual aligned himself with the few good-for-

nothing members (most of whom have been expelled) who wanted Sikaran to be their

“palabigasan.”

Between good news and bad news, most people select to hear the good news first.

Between the good deeds and bad deeds, we will deal with the good deeds first. For a better

comparison, both good deeds and bad deeds will be based on the 5th World Sikaran Brotherhood

Tournament held on March 10, 2017 to coincide with the 90th birthday anniversary of Supremo

Meliton C. Geronimo.

On this momentous event there were several firsts that are classified as good news. There

were delegations from the United States, Canada and even Sweden. Although there are no

physical participation, from Australia, Italy, and the Middle East, they however, sent

representatives whose spiritual presence was more meaningful than the physical attendance of

some.

Jaime Geronimo, a high-ranking official of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the

Philippines and once the Acting-president, refused to participate in the program held for the 5th

Page 8: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

World Sikaran Tournament of Champions. Jaime Geronimo flatly told Janet Geronimo, the

Presidential Assistant for Executive Affairs that he will not join the festivities. To make it even

worse he was asking the citizens and officials of Baras NOT TO JOIN OR SUPPORT THE

EVENT MARKING THE 90TH

BIRTHDAY OF SUPREMO MELITON C. GERONIMO.

However, the Mayor of Baras, KC Robles, and Nini Ynares, the Honorable Governor of Rizal,

and the majority of the Provincial and Municipal officials stood behind Pantas Meliton S.

Geronimo, Jr. and the World Sikaran Brotherhood and gave their all-out support.

Prior to the tournament, the WSB President Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. assisted by

high-ranking officials, such as Mantas-Marangal Romeo Paje (5th World Sikaran Brotherhood

Championships Director) , Mantas-Marangal Louelle Lledo, Jr. (WSB State Director for New

Jersey), Mantas-Marangal Andy Sanano, Jr. (United States Country Director and State Director

for Florida), and Mantas-Marangal Emmanuel Querubin (Executive and Technical Assistant to

the Supremo) conducted a Seminar for Tournament Rules and Regulations and assigned the

Tournament Officials. Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. also distributed the officials’ uniform,

which was used for the first time and which he had custom-made with his own money.

Another First in this Tournament was the presence of First Aid Technicians from the

Philippine National Red Cross. The presence of these first aiders prevented serious injuries to the

contestants. In fact, when a contestant was knocked out cold, it was the Vice-Governor who

transported the injured player to the hospital for treatment in his own personal car and stayed

until the injured player was given the “good-to-go” release by the treating doctor.

There are several officials who were honored with first time awards. Some were

bestowed loyalty awards, some were bestowed Leadership Awards, and some were vested the

Highest Award in the World Sikaran Brotherhood known as the Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo

Award of Honor.

Due to failing health as a result of several episodes of Stroke, Supremo Meliton C.

Geronimo, on March 10, 2015 passed on to his son Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr., the leadership of

the World Sikaran Brotherhood, on the event known as the “Passing of the Sikaran Torch.”

The commitment of the Geronimo family to the cause of Sikaran, cannot be more

obvious than the picture above shows. Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo, suffering the ill effects of

several bouts with stroke tried his best to be part of the event. Mrs. Ruth Spaulding Geronimo, as

she has always, is beside the Supremo. Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. expressing his gratitude

to his parents, as his son Zach Ramsey Melton sets his sight to the future

On March 7, 2015, the most meaningful Sikaran event of the second decade of the second

millennia took place in front of the Municipal Hall of Baras, Rizal. Witnessed by more than

3,000 participants, the success of the Passing of the Torch surpassed the expectations of

everybody concerned, especially the Preparation Committee, headed by Ms. Janeth Geronimo.

Jaime Geronimo who spent considerable time and effort, not only in not electing Meliton S.

Geronimo, Jr. President of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines but more in

convincing the non-participation of the citizens and officials of Baras in the event known as

“Passing of the Sikaran Torch.”

When Pantas Meliton S. Geronimo, Jr. saw his name in the list of the recipients of the

“Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo Award of Honor”, he said that he cannot accept it for

“delikadesa,” since as President he will be signing the award. However, the Executive Council

and the general membership unanimously and overwhelmingly decided that he should accept the

award because he deserves it. A member, whether he was serious or just in a jest, recommended

Jaime Geronimo to receive the award. However, the Executive Council rejected the

recommendation and even hinted that Jaime Geronimo must be expelled and stripped off his

rank, and his name be permanently removed from the membership journal (this process is now in

progress).

EXPERIENCE, AWARDS, AND

POSITIONS HELD IN THE MARTIAL

ARTS

Andy Sanano was born in Legazpi City, in the Province of Albay. He learned the rudiments of armed and unarmed fighting, from his grandfather and uncles who were the caretakers of their family art,

the Labing-Tatlong Hampas system of Arnis de Mano. His adversary in training was the banana trees and

the tall cogon grass while walking in the field. Little did he know that he was being prepared to someday take over their family art.

When their family moved to Manila, he sought training in the other fighting arts. He joined the

Sikaran class at the Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines gymnasium in Pasay City. His insatiable appetite for the fighting arts led him to join the Pering Cruz Dojo where the curriculum included Karate,

Judo, Ju-jitsu, Aikido and Arnis de Mano, where his growing-up "play in the fields" started to have

meaning.

Relatives, adopted Andy in 1961, after his father passed away. After receiving his Black Belt in Sikaran/Karate at the age of 18 his adoptive parents brought him to San Francisco, California. While in

San Francisco, Kempo was added to his martial arts repertoire.

He joined the United States Air Force and was eventually stationed in Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, where he retired after 20 years. He also served for 16 years as a Reserve Lieutenant with

the Rapid City (South Dakota) Police Department assigned to the Special Response Team (SRT),

sometimes referred to as SWAT in other Police Agencies. While in the service, he trained in all the martial arts that came his way, like Tae Kwon Do,

Uechi-ryu Karate, Shotokan Karate, White Crane Kung-Fu, Aikido, and other weapon arts. He holds

high-ranking Black Belt Degrees in several martial arts, including an 9th Degree Red and White Belt

(Reg. No. 844) from the World Sikaran Brotherhood. To honor his family art, he consolidated all the systems he learned and formed the Sanano Martial Arts System (SMAS) with numerous affiliates all over

the United States.

His expertise in the martial arts won him several gold medals in competitions and tournaments.

He was also honored in several Halls of Fame by different National and International Martial Arts organization. He was also one of the most sought after Martial Arts Instructor in various workshops and

seminars.

In 2010, Andy and other Filipino Martial Arts Teachers formed the Matawguro Association

Filipino Martial Arts Education for Arnis de Mano, of which he is the International Coordinator. Also in 2010, the United Fellowship of Martial Artists, with headquarters in the East Coast, vested on

Andy an Award of Excellence, for the Propagation and Development of the Filipino Martial Arts in the

United States. His other awards are:

Dante is a 3rd Generation instructor of Filipino Martial Arts. Dante began training in

Filipino Martial Arts at the age or 5. During that time his father, a World War II veteran, trained

him as a necessity, for fear of another World War. Even though the training was very difficult

Dante enjoyed it and he even continued to train in Filipino Martial Arts throughout his

adulthood, becoming a key member in the world’s largest Sikaran Organization, known as the

World Sikaran Brotherhood of Philippines.

When Dante immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada in 1977 he wanted to continue his passion

for martial arts and also increase the profile of the growing Filipino community. In November of

that same year he decided he could do his part by opening the first martial art school in Canada

that offered Filipino Martial Arts. Back in the 70’s this was a big gamble as many Filipinos and

non-Filipinos were only familiar with martial arts such as Karate, Taekwondo and Judo. Dante

has been credited by the World Sikaran Brotherhood of Philippines as being the first to open a

Sikaran Arnis School in Canada. Sikaran became a place where many Filipinos, both new

immigrants and Canadian born, could come together to learn a part of Filipino culture. It also

assisted many new immigrants with their integration into Canadian Society, and for those

Canadian born, help teach them the values and beliefs of Filipino culture. Dante has been

highlighted in local news many times both inside and outside of the Filipino Community. He has

been highlighted for his work with the community and his tireless effort in increasing the profile

of Filipinos in Winnipeg.

In the early 80’s he was interviewed by CTV as one of the first Filipino candidates for

the Winnipeg Police Force. After 5 decades, Sikaran Arnis School of Martial Arts Canada has

grown and Dante now has many students (both Filipino and non-Filipino) that have opened their

own Filipino Martial Arts schools and still recognize him as their grandmaster. His teachings can

now be found in Philippines, Canada, United States and Costa Rica. Dante continues to give

back to the Filipino community and is currently in contact with Jon Malek, in order to assist him

in his research project on the Filipino Community in Winnipeg. Dante’s connection with the

Filipino community has continued to grow and he has not only participated in many Filipino

events in Winnipeg, but has also made connections and provided support to the Filipino

communities in Steinbach, Thompson, Portage La Prairie, and Neepawa.

Dante Alambra has been a pillar of the Filipino Community since 1977.

Dante was awarded the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 2003 for Martial Arts excellence and

work in the Winnipeg Community

Dante has been inducted into the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame 2013

Introduced Sikaran training to members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police 1992

Participated in Folkarama Pearl of the Orient throughout the 80’s, 90’s,2000’s and

2010’s.

As a pillar of the Filipino Community, since the 1970’s to present day, many new

immigrants have come to Dante for assistance. Dante has used his connections and

resources to assist his fellow Filipinos in finding work, connect with financial assistance,

finding a home, and connection with support networks to minimize culture shock.

Dante holds a yearly tournament that helps highlight the Filipino Martial Arts most

recently in May 2014 he hosted the 4th World Sikaran Tournament, where competitors from

Philippines, Australia, USA and Canada attended. This will be the 3rd World Sikaran

Tournament that Dante will be hosting (previous ones were held in 1986 and 1996).

Dante Alambra has participated and been an active member in various Filipino

Organizations throughout the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s and 2010’s and is currently an active

member of the Manitoba Filipino Business Council, Filipino Senior Citizen Organization,

Alambra Refined Martial Arts Systems Organization, Sikaran Black Belt Association of Canada,

and World Sikaran Brotherhood.

Dante is currently the Country Director of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of Canada, an

active member of the World Sikaran Brotherhood. He is also considered Master of Alambra

EMMANUEL del Espiritu Santo QUERUBIN

9th

Degree Red and White Belt

Executive and Technical Assistant to Supremo Meliton C. Geronimo

Author: SIKARAN, FIGHTING ART OF THE FILIPINO FARMER

ORIGINAL BALANGKAS OF SIKARAN

The author’s first lesson in fighting was when he was 15 years old under his paternal

uncle, Fructuoso “PCC BOY” Querubin, a professional prize fighter and younger brother of his

late father. An unfortunate accident during training caused the author to give up the dream of

being a professional fighter like his uncle and his late father who died when the author was only

5 years old.

Page 33: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

Fructuoso “PCC BOY” Querubin, the author’s

first fighting art (boxing) teacher.

While on vacation in his mother’s province of Bauan, Batangas, he witnessed his

mother’s cousin, Inong del Espiritu Santo (locally known as Kilabot) playing with some

youngsters. Kilabot was jokingly manhandling anybody who comes near him. Even if they all

gang up on him they cannot hold him down. He either applies a takedown technique, a throw or a

submission hold. That was the start of the author’s training in “Babag”, the term Kilabot called

his system. Literally, Babag means fight.

The author was also schooled in the use of different weapons. Aside from the baston,

Kilabot was also very proficient in the use of the tungkli (also called pingga), a medium length

carrying stick Batanguenos use in plying their merchandise of kolambu (mosquito net) and banig

(a type of floor mat used to sleep on). A farmer by calling, Kilabot was an expert in the use of

the karit (sickle), the dulos (reaper), the gulok (machete) and the palakol (axe). He can likewise

throw any of the weapons and hit the target dead center at 10 yards.

But Kilabot’s favorite weapon was the kudlit, a 4” version of the balisong. Due to its size,

the kudlit was very easy to conceal and very handy to employ .The blade was only 2½ inches

long concealed in the handle which was about 4 inches long, 1 inch wide and ½ inch thick. He

said that you do not need a longer blade, emphasizing that the short blade will be more than

enough protection, all you need to know is where to hit. Besides being a farmer, Kilabot was also

the local barrio butcher and well acquainted with vital points. Other than the blade, kudlit had

other tactical uses. The use of the blade was a last resort application. The most common use of

the kudlit was hitting vital points with either end while holding it tightly hidden in your hand.

The kudlit, given to the author, became his favorite secret weapon.

Page 34: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

In 1957, through an uncle, who was involved in heavy machineries and infrastructure, he

met Toru Tomada, a Japanese engineer who was part of the Reparations Effort in the Philippines.

Toru Tomada was a black belter in Goju-kai Karate. Although not a certified Karate instructor,

Tomada was willing to have anybody interested, like the author, train with him. The author

trained earnestly with Tomada Sensei. Every training session consisted of punching, blocking

and kicking. There was only one kick, the front kick and it was executed low to the groin or

medium height to the stomach. There were no high kicks or other kicks. The only other part of

the training was doing the Sanchin kata over and over again. The only sparring was pre-arranged

sparring involving punching and front kick.

After more than a year, Toru Tomada went back to Japan and was replaced by another

engineer named Kenji Kurusawa. Like Tomada he was a black belter in Karate, but not a

certified instructor. His type of Karate was different. His style had more kicks and the stances

are wider than Goju-kai. Kurusawa said that his school is called Shuko-kai, an off-shot of Shito-

ryu. Unlike Tomada, Kurusawa performed more katas. Kurusawa’s training involved the

repetition of the katas and the basic techniques of punching, blocking and kicking. It was

unfortunate that Kenji Kurusawa stayed in the Philippines for only several months.

The author continued his Karate training on his own combining what he learned from

Toru Tomada and Kenji Kurusawa.

In 1958, the author, a Corporal in the Philippine Air Force Reserves, heard about Captain

Meliton Geronimo of the Philippine Air Force and the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the

Philippines. The author joined the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines calling his

Karate school Samahan sa Ikauunlad ng Karate sa Pilipinas (SIKAP). In English it meant

Society for the Improvement of Karate in the Philippines (SIKAP). Later the school’s name was

changed to Sikaran Pilipinas (SIKAP). Captain Meliton Geronimo appointed the author Director

for Research and Standards.

Page 35: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

The author trained under Captain Geronimo. He was fascinated by the variety of kicking

techniques of the KBP, which Captain Geronimo said were Sikaran techniques. The most

intriguing techniques were the biyakid (spinning heel kick), the pangbali (stomping kick to the

knee) and the panampal (roundhouse kick to the face using the crook of the foot between the

instep and the shin). Another variation of this kick is using the ball of the foot to hit the temple or

the cheek bone and the use of the shin bone to break the knee.

Captain Meliton Geronimo took the author to Baras, Rizal and introduced him to the

surviving masters of Sikaran. Part of his responsibilities as Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the

Philippines Director for Research and Standards was to assist Captain Geronimo in formulating

the curriculum for Philippine Karate, a metonym title for Sikaran. The author undertook an in-

depth study and research about Sikaran. He interviewed the remaining practitioners of Sikaran in

Page 36: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

the town of Baras and adjoining towns in the Province of Rizal and chronicled the history of

Sikaran and took pictures to preserve the history of the truly unarmed fighting art of Filipino

origin.

It was also at this time that the author met Daniel Rendal of the Rendal Innovative School

of Filipino Fighting Arts. The biggest innovation that Tata Daniel, the title he prefers, introduced

was the use of protective gear in the practice of Arnis de Mano. He maintained that to make

Arnis de Mano a sport it is necessary to use protective gear to achieve realism in combat and

validate the one-strike-one-kill principle of the Filipino fighting art.

Interestingly, Captain Geronimo also preferred using protective gear in the full-contact

sparring practiced by the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines.

The boxing techniques from PCC Boy, the Babag techniques from Ingkong Inong del

Espiritu Santo, the Arnis techniques from Tata Daniel Rendal and the Karate lessons he learned

from Toru Tomada and Kenji Kurusawa complemented the author’s training in Sikaran.

At that time, black belt promotions in the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the

Philippines were done by the All Japan Karate Federation, upon the recommendation of Captain

Meliton Geronimo. The author was promoted to 1st Degree Black belt. Two years later, the

author to was promoted to 2nd

Degree Black Belt.

In 1960, the author joined the YMCA Judo Club to complement his martial arts skill. He

learned Judo from Engineer Fortunato “Boity” Sevilla, then Vice-president of the Philippine

Page 37: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

Amateur Judo Association, Francisco Alvina and Professor Perfecto Mendiola, a guest instructor

at the YMCA Judo Club. Professor Mendiola was responsible in the widespread dissemination of

Judo when it was introduced in the Philippines in the 1930’s.

To complement his martial arts skill, the author studied Judo

from Professor Perfecto Mendiola (left) and Fortunato “Boity” Sevilla

Engineer Sevilla, at that time was a Sales Engineer at the Araneta Heavy Machineries. He

invited a Heavy Machineries consultant, Japanese Engineer named Ryusuke Ohtake who was a

3rd

Degree Black Belt in Wado-ryu Karate to train at the YMCA Judo Club. Ohtake and the

author became very close Karate training partners at the YMCA Judo Club.

Ryusuke Ohtake of the Japan

Wado-kai doing the Heian

Yondan and Ceferino Vasquez

(bare-chested) of the Japan

Karate Association (Shotokan)

were the author’s Karate training

partners and associates.

Page 38: balance between good deeds and bad deeds filena si “Tommy Gunn” sa pelikulang “Rocky V” (1990) ni Sylvester Stallone na tinuruan para maging boxer ni “Rocky.” Nang matuto

Thereafter, Vasquez, Ohtake and the author became Karate training partners at the

YMCA Judo Club. At that point in his martial arts life the author has been exposed to the four

major styles of Japanese Karate, Goju-kai, Shuko-kai (Shito), Wado-kai and Shotokan. This

exposure to the various styles of Karate gave him a clearer understanding and better appreciation

of the Sikaran techniques that Captain Meliton Geronimo was teaching and propagating.

To help in the administration of the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines, the

author introduced Engineer Fortunato Sevilla and Professor Perfecto Mendiola to Captain

Meliton Geronimo. Engineer Sevilla and Professor Mendiola became close advisers of Captain

Geronimo and played major roles in the establishment of the syllabus of Sikaran.

In connection with the author’s job as Operations Manager of the Philippines

International Magazine (a cultural magazine), he traveled all over the Philippines from Batanes

to Jolo. During his travels he took the opportunity to undertake a research about the various

fighting arts of the Philippines.

The author met several martial arts teachers and practitioners, but almost all were

exponents of stick fighting. Their arts were known under different names but were from the same

origin. In the Visayas and Mindanao regions, the most common name of the stick fighting art

was eskrima, estokada and kali. In the Tagalog region of mainland Luzon, the predominant name

was Arnis de Mano. In Central Luzon, Brokil was the accepted name.

In Jolo, the author met Hadji Kiram Ijiran, a school teacher who was an expert in Koon-

tao and Silat and very knowledgeable in the history of the Muslim fighting arts. Koon-tao,

originally brought by Chinese traders and merchants, due to its similarity with Silat from

Indonesia, assumed a Muslim personality all its own and was later considered a Muslim art. In

Cotabato, Marawi and Zamboanga, the author also met several Muslims who were proficient in

both Koon-tao and Silat.

In 1965, the author was appointed Philippine Correspondent for Black Belt Magazine,

published in the United States. The author’s first article was entitled “Sikaran – A Dying Art”, in

the April 1966 issue. This was followed with another Sikaran article entitled “It All Started 800

Years Ago”, in the June 1966 issue.

In November 1966 the Asian Karate Association recognized Sikaran as a sovereign and

independent Filipino Unarmed Fighting Art of distinct origin. Meliton Geronimo was granted the

title of Grandmaster of Sikaran and was awarded the rank of 10th

Degree Red Belt. Thereafter all

promotions in the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines were given by Sikaran

Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo, honored by the Asian Karate Association, the All Japan Karate

Federation and the Korean Karate Association. Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo promoted the

author to 4th Degree Black Belt.

In 1967 the author became the first Sikaran instructor to teach Sikaran outside the

Philippines when he was commissioned by the Karate Association of Malaysia to be Chief

Foreign Karate Instructor and was asked to select three instructors to assist him in Kuala

of the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines.

Kung-fu under Chan Keng Wan, last Master of the system who was also a guest instructor of the

Karate Association of Malaysia. He also trained in the Malaysian version of the Muslim Art of

Bersilat.

Before returning back to the Philippines in 1968, the author was introduced to the

Keishin-kai style of Japanese Karate by Eiichi Yamazaki. Yamazaki replaced the author as Chief

Foreign Karate Instructor of the Karate Association of Malaysia.

In 1969 on the occasion of the Sixth Asian Karate Championship, the author was vested

the “Koichi Kondo Award of Honor” by the Asian Karate Association. He also received the

“Meliton Geronimo Award”, the highest award of the Karate (Sikaran) Brotherhood of the

Philippines. The author was also promoted to 5th Degree Black Belt. Together with Grandmaster

Meliton Geronimo, the author published two SIKARAN Instructional Manuals.

In recognition of Sikaran as a superior combative art, President Ferdinand Marcos enlisted the

services of Captain Meliton Geronimo and his senior instructors to train the Presidential Security

Command in the art of Sikaran. President Ferdinand Marcos awarded the author and the rest of

the instructional staff Plaques of Recognition and Appreciation.

In 1970 Captain Meliton Geronimo headed the Philippine National Karate Team to

participate in the First World Karate Championships in Tokyo, Japan. In connection with the

world championships, the First World Karate Congress was held to form the World Union of

Karate-do Organizations (WUKO) to be the ruling body of Karate in the international world of

sport. Captain Meliton Geronimo and the author became lifetime signatory members of the

WUKO charter. Sikaran was recognized by WUKO as the representative body of Philippine

Karate under Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo, 10th

Degree Red Belt.

While in Japan, the author had the rare opportunity to meet the Grandmasters of the

different Japanese Karate schools, Gogen Yamaguchi of Goju-ryu, Hironori Otsuka of Wado-

ryu, Kenwa Mabuni of Shito-ryu, Masatoshi Nakayama of Shotokan, Masutatsu Oyama of

Kyukoshin-kai and many other masters, not only of Karate but other Japanese martial arts.

and masters who all considered Captain Geronimo equal in rank and title.

The All Japan Karate Federation, once headed by Grandmaster Koichi Kondo, played

host to Captain Meliton Geronimo and the Philippine Team at Utsonomiya City in Tochigiken,

where several celebrations were held to honor Grandmaster Koichi Kondo and commemorate the

defunct Asian Karate Association, the only international Karate Association in Asia before the

formation of the World Union of Karate-do Organizations (WUKO).

When the author returned to the Philippines he had a busy schedule of teaching not only

the Presidential Security Command but also the Metropolitan Command (METROCOM) of the

Armed Forces of the Philippines. He was Combative Arts instructor in the Counter-Urban

Guerilla Course of the Philippine Constabulary and the Distinguished Visitors Protection Course

of the Philippine Air Force Intelligence and Security Unit. He also taught Unarmed Combat in

the Philippine Air Force Officers’ School. He was also appointed Philippine Correspondent for

Official Karate Magazine published in New York.

In 1971, upon the request of Engineer Sevilla, brother-in-law of mayoral candidate

Ramon Bagatsing, the author headed a special unit providing security to the candidate. When

Ramon Bagatsing was elected Mayor, the author was appointed as a Special Confidential Agent,

in-charge of five agents in the Civilian Intelligence and Security Unit of the City of Manila

headed by Jess Patajo. When working close-in security and undercover, where carrying of

firearm is not an option, the use of the kudlit came in very handy.

The author played a balancing act between his job, his family and his duties to the Karate

(Sikaran) Brotherhood of the Philippines. Something had to give and in the end, when his

daughter was born, the author took a leave of absence from Sikaran.

In 1972, Captain Meliton Geronimo concentrated in the propagation of Sikaran and

relinquished all his connections with Karate even dropping all references to Sikaran as

Philippine Karate.

After the author’s article entitled “Time For Action”, the story of the formation of the

Philippine Karate Association, was published in the Official Karate Magazine, Dante Nagtalon,

PKA’s president approached the author for assistance. The PKA wanted to hold an international

invitational Karate Tournament and he asked the author to tap the contacts he made during the

establishment of the World Union of Karate-do Organizations (WUKO). He further asked the

author to train PKA tournament officials in the WUKO’s standard of officiating. Little by little

the author got involved in the technical affairs of the Philippine Karate Association.

In 1975, the PKA President requested the author to train the National Karate Team for

the Third World Karate Championships to be held in Long Beach, California. Assisted by

Louelle Lledo, the team consequently won the fourth place in the team championships. The

author and Louelle Lledo, after having been certified as WUKO International Referee, Judge and

Arbitrator also represented the Philippines in the Third World Karate Congress.

After migrating to the Unites States and promotion to the 6th Degree Black Belt in 1975,

the author taught Sikaran to neighborhood kids in Oakland, California. He also had a brief stint

as a Sikaran instructor to the personnel of the Philippine Consulate in San Francisco, headed by

then Consul General Romeo Arguelles.

In 1982 the author was promoted to 7th Degree Black Belt. Eight years later in 1990,

Sikaran Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo promoted the author to the 8th Degree Black Belt

making him the third highest ranking, next to Jimmy Geronimo, 9th Degree Black Belt Chief

Instructor of the Kapatirang Sikaran Pandaigdig (World Sikaran Brotherhood).

In 2006, the author became aware that several people were claiming to be grandmasters

and masters of Sikaran. After meeting with Grandmaster Meliton Geronimo in 2007, the author

decided to set the record straight and educate the uninformed and misinformed regarding the real

history of Sikaran, by finishing the book that he started in the 1960’s. In 2008 the book

“SIKARAN, The Fighting Art of the Filipino Farmer” was copyrighted and published.
