Use of Catalase Test

The catalase test is primarily used todistinguish among Gram-positive cocci

Staphylococcus are catalase-positive,

members of the genera Streptococcus andEnterococcus are catalase-negative.

Coagulase Test

differentiates strains of Staphylococcus aureusfrom S. epidermidis and other coagulase-negative species

S. aureus strains are usually capable ofcoagulating EDTA-treated plasma in the tubetest and will produce clumps of cells in theslide test.
