O ctober has been full of tricks and treats - and it's not even Halloween! This year's Burn the Witch IV art show, recently came under attack by some rather “mysteriousforces” in the community.

Upon receiving the news of the vandalism you'll read about on pg. 7, I was truly shocked. In all myyears as a musician in the community and as a fan of local art, this has never happened to my knowl-edge. This town loves noisy street corner Prop. 8 protests and things of that nature, but an art show?

I've been privileged to know the ladies behind the annual Burn The Witch Art show since it's incep-tion. Over the years we've developed a great relationship as colleagues and supporters of eachother's work. Last year they graced the cover of Bakotopia, and this year they're back stronger thanever!

In the wake of all the damage and pain caused to everyone involved, we should all rally around theartists in this year's Burn The Witch IV. Please make plans to attend the show's opening on Oct. 17

and closing on Oct. 31 to show your love and support. Embrace the elements ofchange...

Thanks to all of this week's contributors and advertisers!

Peace,

I t's amazing how a first meetingcan forever influence your opinionof a person. The old saying, you never get a

second chance to make a firstimpression is more true than werealize. Take my first meeting withFrancis as an example.

It was 4 years ago and I was justa lowly news reporter at Clear Chan-nel. I had seen Francis around thebuilding and decided to introducemyself while we were taking abreak. I said “Hi, I'm Miranda Whit-worth. What's your name?” At thatpoint Francis, dressed as if he hadjust returned from a drum circle, introduced himself as Dr. David Ban-ner (you know, from The Hulk). Thiswas in front of five people who knewhis true identity, yet insisted he wasnot an employee of KRAB, but infact a respected member of themedical community. In my head Ipromised myself I would neverspeak to that man again. Fast for-ward four years I am now contractu-ally obligated to talk to him, butthings could be worse.

I share this story because it'simportant to know that a fleetingmoment between two people, whether it is between friends or anartist and a fan, can have quite animpact. I have been extremely luckyto introduce manyKRAB listenersto musiciansand song writersthey adore andfor the most partthose experi-ences have beengreat. 3 DoorsDown came to

Bakersfield two years ago and Fran-cis and I had the opportunity to con-duct a listener “meet and greet”with the band. The guys wereextremely nice and bent over back-wards to please their fans. Theyeven invited us back to their dress-ing room, offered an interview andrefreshments! I have to admitbefore we met the band Francis andI would occasionally bag on theirmusic but from that point on wehave thought very fondly of 3 DoorsDown and will never say anythingbad about them. The same can besaid about bands like Flyleaf, TakingBack Sunday, Panic at the Disco andRey Fresco. All were very accommo-dating and wanted to make sure thelisteners and the staff at KRAB con-nected with them on a brief yet per-sonal level.

Unfortunately, the same is not sotrue for one of Bakersfield's biggesthometown acts - KORN.

When KORN made their way toBakersfield with the Family ValuesTour in '07, we were excited to seethem and so were the fans. ButKORN didn't seem that excited tosee us. Ok, I'm sure playing in yourhometown can be exhausting - butbetween a less than friendly roadmanager and very key members ofthe band missing for the listener“meet and greet” we were left feel-ing a little bit slighted. I know thatwhen it

comes to spending time with anational act you have to leave yourexpectations at the door, especiallyif you are a DJ. However, fansdeserve a little more heart, espe-cially if they are tried and true andfrom your own stomping grounds.

The question now is can a bandredeem itself? Jared Leto and 30Seconds to Mars are on the brink ofmaking good to their fans. While Ilove the music of 30 Seconds toMars several self serious and ratherrude interviews conducted withfront man Jared Leto made merethink my taste for the group. Letodid not hide his enormous ego dur-ing a '06 interview with Blendermagazine in which he suggested hecould never give up life in Hollywoodbecause no other musician turnedactor has accomplished his level ofcrossover success. I could name afew starting with Frank Sinatra andending with Jack Black, but who iscounting? Now Leto and Mars havea chance to make things right. Aftera long hiatus due to film schedulingand strife between band membersthey are finally releasing a newalbum. As a show of “thanks” forlisteners patience, their new albumart will include 2,000 pictures oftheir loyal fans. Will it be enough? Iwill wait until I shake Leto's hand inBakersfield before I reevaluate my

opinion. Stay up to date with

For the first time in almostseventeen years that I'veknown him, my husband was

more excited to see a live stageshow than I was.

From the moment we heard'Evil Dead the Musical' was com-ing to town, Todd was planning toattend.

Todd has been an Evil Dead fanfrom the start. Myself; not somuch. Horror movies have neverbeen my thing. But I have toadmit; after tonight, I'm definitelya fan of the musical; especiallyour own Spotlight Theatre's ver-sion. The script; funny! Theactors; talented! The makeup;scary! The effects; gross! Andthe set itself was as entertainingand energetic as any of thesinging, dancing 'deadites' in thecast, offering one inventive sur-prise after another (I won't spoilit by going into detail!).

This show is rowdy, randy, andfast-paced. When five collegestudents set out for a weekend inthe woods, they accidentallyunleash an Army of Darkness. The stage is soon covered withcapering Canderian Demons, andthe audience (in the first threerows, anyway) is soon coveredwith goo and gore (special pon-chos are available for purchasebefore the show). Seating fartherback is safely outside of the"splatter zone" but the effectsare just as enjoyable from afar!

Overall this production totallyrocked, and not just in a totally80's way (even if that is when theseries first came out). It wasobvious that everyone involvedworked really hard, to pull out abrilliant show. I have to givekudos to the director, JarredClowes. Such a complex produc-tion might have crumbled underless skillful leadership; but thisshow came together like a deli-ciously gooey, if gorey, s'more. Icould fill pages with high praisefor the cast, and the crew. Thisshow is an excellent example ofwhat can happen when talentedpeople work together toward acommon goal. Bravo, all around.

'Evil Dead the Musical' hassomething for everyone, except-ing small children: Parents, leavethe kids at home! This sexy, high-energy romp has plenty of adultcontent, strong language, andsome very convincing horrormakeup effects, courtesy of Jen-nifer Sorkin.

All in all, this was a thoroughlyenjoyable night out, and worthevery penny. Call the Box Officeat: 634.0692, and get your tick-ets reserved, now; a show thisgood is sure to sell out!

Take one part "Blair Witch Project" onepart "The Entity" and, what the heck, another part "The Exorcist" and you

have the new underground movie phenome-non known as "Paranormal Activity".

Filmed for $11,000 in the director's ownhome, this little film that could was originallyreleased in 2007 where Dreamworks studiosbought it with the plans of a rem-make. Afterscreening it at Steven Spielberg's housewhere it, reportedly, scared him so bad hecouldn't be left alone in the room (this is thesame guy that made "Poltergeist" and"JAWS", the audience went nuts for it. It wasdecided to leave it as is and redo the ending(for the better - according to the director) andlet Paramount do the releasing.

It was recently screened last month at

Texas' Fantastic Film festi-val where the critics andaudience were ecstaticabout it, receiving it as oneof "the scariest moviesever made" almost unani-mously.

The story is this: a cou-ple think there's somethinghaunting their house. Theboyfriend gets a video cam-era and films as they sleep. It's filmed in a cinemaverite style ala Blair Withcand Cloverfield but the bed-room scenes are filmedwith the camera mounted inone spot and recording theridiculously creepy stuffthat happens. Little by littleit goes from creepy tobugnuts terrifying!

Instead of the usual way of distributingmovies, Paramount is doing an online petitionwhere the cities that demand it the most willget the movie. Every showing it's had sinceopening in 13 cities on September 25 (and10 cities the week after), have been sold outquickly!

So, come on Bakersfield!Let's do this!

How cool would it be tohave an intense communalevent where everyone isenjoying the movie and react-ing in the same way: consis-tently on edge and, wheneverthe lights go out in the bed-room onscreen, going "Ohcrap, here we go again"! Afterthe movie is over, everyonewill have a group "WTF"?moment. I have a feeling noone will be sleeping soundlyafter watching this film. Fol-low these instructions…

Go to the film's officialwebsite:www.paranormalmovie.com

Press the 'DEMAND IT'button. Last time I checked, we we're #40 asof October 2nd (YEAH!) but Fresno's #27.FRESNO?! C'mon! Don't let "Shelbyville" getit first, spread the word. Let's get in on thezeitgeist and give ourselves one HELL of aHalloween present.

If you don't do this, may you have someparanormal activity of your own! Mwahaha!

Let's get our own screen-ing of 'ParanormalActivity' in Bakersfieldfor Halloween.

L ocally-produced Bakersfieldart show, Burn The Witch, featured in this issue of

Bakotopia recently came underattack prior to its Oct. 17 open-ing. The following is a short re-cap of the unpleasant incident.

The Incident:After preparing artwork dis-

plays for the upcoming Burn TheWitch IV art show at the newMetro Special Events, 2801 FSt., the week of October 1,BTWIV show curatorNyoka Jamesonreturned on Satur-day, October 3, tofind that some ofthe art show'spieces had beenmoved and vandal-ized.

Shocked by whatshe found, sheimmediately con-tacted BPD to file areport and phonecalls were made. Some of the show'sexpensive pieceswere found dam-aged, placed in the restroomfacility, and in some cases - gonemissing.

The Damage:According to the BPD police

report filed by Jameson, totaldamage was estimated at over2,600.00. Some of the piecesincluded small, coffin shaped

sculpture boxes made of wood,an 11"x14" framed piece, and a6 foot sculpture. After being con-tacted, the artists were upsetand angered.

The following are portions ofreactions by some of the artistswhose art was involved in theattack.

Artist Micky Piercy ("The Cru-cifixion of Mother Earth")

"I knew my piece would becontroversial. That was my inten-tion. To me, the subject in ques-tion is the violation of our Earth... But, I want people to under-

stand what I meantby the title, "TheCrucifixion of MotherEarth" is meant tobe a parallel ...Christ was killed byhis own people. OurEarth ... she's beingkilled, by her ownpeople; we continueto pollute, knowingthe damage we'redoing ... and that'swhat I was trying tosay. I never meantto be blasphemousor disrespectful ofthe Christian faith in

any way. I was raised Pente-costal; I was raised in thechurch. And while I don't consid-er myself to be a 'Christian' I dohave a profound respect for otherpeople's religious beliefs.

The title of this show totallyfits; that's what they're trying todo, here; they're trying to burn

the witch”!Artist Jenn Williams ("Story

Boxes")“I'm just thinking, 'really?'

This really happened? Truthfully, right now I actually feel worse forthe woman whose artwork wasdamaged and moved. That's soamazingly hateful, and disre-spectful. My art is gone. Micky'sart has been damaged. We'vebeen violated ... but we still haveto go on, put on the show ... andthat's traumatic.

To me, this is not a religiousthing, at all. It's a censorshipthing. The artwork was not reli-giously motivated, so how canthe reaction to it be consideredreligiously motivated? This isn't'us vs. them;' ... this is artwork,on display ... and someone took

it upon himself to trash it andmake a jackass of himself in theprocess. That is about the van-dals themselves ... it has nothingto do with us, or our art”.

Will Burn The Witch IV flameon"? The answer is a resounding,YES!

**Don Martin of Metro Gal-leries who was out of town duringthe incident expressed his disap-pointment, and stated he is notaffiliated with any other group’sleasing of the building. Upon hisreturn, Martin has been activelyworking with artists to makerepairs and assure the safety ofthe artists and their works.

Introduction ...As yet another amazing incarnation ofBurn the Witch draws near, I find myself

not only reminiscing on years past, but alsolooking to the future.

If this empowering movement is to sur-vive, we will continue to need new blood, each year. And, while it’s true that I continueto slog through the trenches of our local artsscene, it’s important to remember that I’mnot alone. That’s especially crucial in thisyear; the fluctuatingeconomy has beentough on the arts, everywhere. It wouldbe easy to get dis-couraged, if not forthe company I’mkeeping.

As it turns out,I’m in some prettygood company. I’dlike to climb out ofthe trenches for amoment, and high-light four, among themany, who’ve workedhard to help createBurn the Witch IV.So much more thanjust pretty faces; themodels in this year’spromotional photosare strong, educated, and talented women. They, and others likethem, are the reason I continue to work for abetter arts community in Bakersfield; and Iam honored to stand beside them, as part ofthis year’s Burn the Witch.

It’s important to remember that, as thearts belong to all of us, so to is it the respon-sibility of everyone, to keep the arts alive.

Burn the Witch!~Jen Raven (BTW founder)

The Next Generation … meet the sirens.

Nyoka Jameson (BTW IV Curator)-Age: 28 -BA in Art from CSUB, working on her Mastersin Fine Art; Art Academy of San Francisco.

One of the First Four women who originallyfounded Burn the Witch, last year Nyokaserved on the BTW Board as Assistant to theCurator, and this year she’s running theshow. Nyoka is founder and President ofBakersfield’s newest non-profit arts organi-zation, Bakersfield Emerging ContemporaryArtists.

Nyoka is a skilled painter, and the leadvocalist in a local band, “Destroy theThrone.” She is very active in Bakersfield’sArts community; she has participated in ViaArte for four years; she has created and soldartwork in the ACK fundraiser, Artini; she hascreated award winning artwork for the KernCounty Fair; and she won the Best of Show

award twice at the Underground Gallery. She’s also shown artwork in Sacramento, and will be part of the upcoming January‘Cannibal Flower’ exhibit, in Los Angeles.

Nyoka is enthusiastic about taking on thechallenge of creating this year’s Burn theWitch, though she does admit, “It turned outto be a lot more work than I’d realized! Espe-cially because we had to move our growingshow to a larger venue ... and then move itagain when our venue fell through. But it’s allbeen worth it, and I want to continue to keepthis event alive. Burn the Witch has beensuch a valuable thing for the women in our

arts community, andit’s where BECA wasborn. So, while I planon serving as curatorat least through BTWV, I do intend, some-day, to hand it off tothe next curator, justas Raven handed itover to me.”

Nyoka would like tothank all the BTWartists and fans whovolunteered their timeto help bring this showto life, especiallyRobyn, Becky, andDestiny, who stayeduntil 4 a.m. with her,to complete the hang!Thank you to the BTWboard members, whohave been working so

hard in the last several months, to organizethis complex event. Also, she would like tothank Don Martin of Metro Galleries, NicholeGarvin of The Arts Council of Kern, and MattMunoz of Bakotopia Magazine, for all of theirgenerous support.

Robyn Lace (BTW IV Creative Director)Age: 28AA in Art from Bakersfield College, BS in Busi-ness from University of Phoenix, working onher Masters in Cross Cultural Education;National University.

This is Robyn’s second year to Burn theWitch.

Last year she helped us put the showtogether; this year she’s serving as CreativeDirector of our promotions campaign. Robyncame up with the concepts for this year’sphoto shoots, and designed much of the cos-tuming for them as well. Robyn is an activemember of BECA; she teaches our popularFraming and Hanging Hardware workshops, and helps us put together our raffle basketsfor fundraisers. She also acted as CreativeDirector for BECA’s ‘Muse’ group arts exhibitin March. And, she has participated in Bak-ersfield’s Via Arte for nine years.

Robyn is a true Renaissance Woman; sheis skilled in acrylics and watercolor; she’sactive in our community theatre scene; shedesigns and creates beautiful costumes andjewelry; and she’s generous with her time

and talent, when it comes to helping otheraspiring artists. “I really love teaching, andI’m happy to have the opportunity to teachthrough BECA. The artists in BECA are likefamily to me, and I’m so glad the group iscontinuing to grow. This year’s Burn theWitch will be the best one yet ... it’s myfavorite art show, and Halloween is myfavorite time of year ... and BECA artists aremy favorite people ... I can’t wait for the Burnthe Witch costume party, on October 31!”

Destiny Pledger (BTW IV newcomer)Age: 27AA in Psychology from Bakersfield College, working on her BA in Psychology from CSUB.

This is Destiny’s first year with Burn theWitch.

She was encouraged to join our movementby Robyn Lace; “Robyn had seen some of mywork, and commented on how it was good, and it ought to be shown. But, aside fromhaving some of my student artwork on dis-play at Bakersfield College, I’ve never actual-ly been part of an arts exhibit; I’d never con-sidered my masks and costumes to be ‘art’before talking to Robyn and Nyoka ... I justenjoyed creating new costumes as a hobby.Working with other women artists has helpedme to form a different opinion, about what Ido.” Destiny is askillful costumer, andalso creates somepretty amazingleatherwork masks.“All my dresses forthe show are madefrom my own pat-terns. The Renais-sance dress I’ve sub-mitted to Burn theWitch is made with40+ steel bones anda wooden underbusk;it took me about amonth to complete.”

Though apprehen-sive at first, Destinyhas since come toview Burn the Witchas “a completelyunregrettable experi-ence ... everyone hasbeen so great to work with; everyone hasmade me feel so comfortable and so wel-come ... I’m already looking forward to work-ing with all of these people, again. For anywomen who are newcomers to our artsscene, I have to tell you; this is the perfectway to jump in! Everyone is so laid back. There are no entrance fees. The openingsare parties, rather than formal receptions ...the only pressure I've experienced at all wasin getting my artwork done, in time for thedrop!”

Becky Osterdock (BTW IV newcomer)Age: 24BA in Art from CSUB, working on her teacher’scredential, as well as her portfolio for submis-

sion to a Master’s program. This is Becky’s first year to be a part of

Burn the Witch, but she did get to see theexhibit last year: “I was really impressedwith the floor-to-ceiling artwork. Just walkingthrough the gallery inspired me to paint.”Becky’s latest oils-on-canvas series ofmasks will be on display at this year’s exhib-it; “I’ve just finished some paintings that I’vebeen working on for nearly two years. Theywill finally be unveiled at Burn the Witch IV.”Becky works with ceramics, as well, and sheis skilled with pastels; she’s participated inVia Arte for three years; this will be herfourth. In last year’s Via Arte, she won firstplace for original artwork; the year beforeshe won third place for a reproduction.

Becky is good friends with fellow artistsNyoka, Destiny, and Robyn, so she reallyenjoyed working on the promotions for thisyear’s event. “The photo shoots were somuch fun! And I’m honored to be a represen-tative for Burn the Witch, in Bakotopia maga-zine. I’m so proud to be doing something insupport of the women artists in our city.”Becky also adds that she’s excited for all thefree classes BECA offers the men andwomen artists in our community; “It’s soimportant to continue educating ourselveson what's happening with contemporary art,

today. The classesand field trips to gal-leries, inside and out-side of Bakersfield, will be so valuable forour local emergingartists.”

award twice at the Underground Gallery.

Burn the Witch IV ~NEW LEADERSHIP,NEW LOCATION!

Because the showhas continued togrow in popularity andin participation,we’ve had to move itto a larger venue. Also! This year thelovely and talentedNyoka will be takingcharge of our event. She’s done a magnifi-cent job with this

year’s show. Everyone come out and supportyour local women artists as we BURN THEWITCH in 2009!

When Shirley Jackson’s short story“The Lottery” was first published inThe New Yorker back in 1948, it cre-

ated a bang wallop. Further-

more, when itis read by ado-lescents today- even afterbeing assailedby the mostextremeimagery themass mediacan dish out tothem - it stillcreates quitethe horror. Aperennial sta-ple of SouthernCalifornia highschools, fewthings are quite as satisfying as seeing sup-posed jaded teenagers looking up after read-ing the story with stunned expressions ontheir faces.

“The Lottery” does have antecedents in lit-erature. Set in an unspecified Americantown, the story calls to mind the small-com-munities-with-a-large-secret-to-hide aspenned in the works of Nathaniel Hawthorneand H. P. Lovecraft. Nothing “supernatural”whatsoever occurs in the story, which onlyadds to its power. The plotting is methodicaland bone-dry. Members of a small town gath-er in the main square for the annual lottery, and the ritual is played out with a routine pre-cision.

When “The Lottery” was first published,Jackson and The New Yorker received tons ofhate mail. Many condemned the story, abouta barbarous custom to be “sadistic, violentand modern.” Since the horror genre reliesheavily on shock and transgression, theseaccusations can be viewed as a back-handedcompliment to thestory’s power.

“The Lottery” has alocal connection aswell. In 1969, a shortfilm version of thestory for EncyclopediaBrittanica was filmedon location in the cityof Taft. Viewable atYouTube.com, the clas-sic short was reported-ly one of the most in-demand short films inpublic schools in the16mm era.

Author Shirley Jack-son, America's pre-eminent female authorof horror fiction is per-haps best known forher 1959 novel “TheHaunting of HillHouse” which wasadapted for film twice, with varying degrees ofsuccess. Jackson, whopassed away in 1965at the age of 48, was asingular and remarkable woman. Owning avoluminous collection of books on witchcraftand black magic, not a single supernaturalelement was to ever waft into any of her sto-ries. Even “Hill House,” a traditional ghost

story, can be explained away as the imagin-ings of a neurotic heroine. Her small NewEngland town that figures in “The Lottery”may have been shaped by the fact that shelived most of her life in rural New Hampshire, her husband and four children the only edu-cated intellectuals in a community of hardscrabble farmers.

Jackson has since been lauded as the oneauthor most attuned with America’s cold waranxieties, addressing the fears of a nation

confronted with theharsh realities of theatom bomb and theconcentration camp.Whatever the case,Jackson was acutelyaware of the petty jeal-ousies and isolationsof the American mind-set. In a debt of grati-tude to the creator ofthe first truly modernhorror story, StephenKing dedicated hisnovel “Firestarter”thusly: “In memory ofShirley Jackson, whonever needed to raiseher voice.”

If you haven’t readJackson’s short story,do so immediately.Resisting pat and glibinterpretation, “TheLottery” continues toshock and horrify read-ers more than 50 yearslater.

The story’s overrid-ing message to this writer, it would appear tobe that evil is the most potent when servedin the guise of unthinking tradition.

Go to www.youtube.com, and search: 'TheLottery Shirley Jackson' to see the film!
