We are seeing an encouraging year on year growth in participation numbers for BAJA SAEINDIA including the electric powered version of BAJA, one of a kind across the globe.

BAJA SAEINDIA is a student driven competition and it gives me immense pleasure to see the passion, zeal and enthusiasm with which the students approach this event. They undergo a full product development cycle right from the design and conceptualization of their ATV's, to manufacture and to finally test and competing, all in less than a year. They simultaneously also have to focus on their academics and social commitments. This surely is no mean feat and I admire and heartily congratulate each and every student who is participating in this mega event.

I would also like to express my gratitude to all the Industry Judges who have taken valuable time out of their schedule for BAJA SAEINDIA. Their guidance and feedback are crucial aspects of the learning process for the students. I wish all the best to all the participating teams and I hope to see some great innovations and even greater passion from all of you.

With increasing participation over year on year, I am pleased to announce that close to 400 teams have registered for the 12th Season of Mahindra presents BAJA SAEINDIA 2019 which includes 58 eBAJA teams. This event challenges engineering students to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive the severe reprimand of a rough terrain. As in real work situations, these future engineers work together as a team to discover and resolve technical challenges in design, test, manufacturing, as well as business issues. It also gives students the first-hand challenge of pursuing their passion while managing real-life demands and priorities.

The tremendous efforts of BAJA Alumni committee has improved our communication with the student community and the organizing team through BAJA SAEINDIA Forum, BAJACME, Facebook and Twitter.

TECHNICAL INSPECTION READINESS

Mr. Sanjay NibandheDeputy Director, HTC and FID ARAI, Chakan & Chairman, SAEINDIA Western SectionHead - Technical Committee, BAJA SAEINDIA

Over the period of time, old teams learnt how to clear Technical Evaluation (TE) however new teams see it as a challenge. The TE criteria will be more stringent this year. Most important is Driver & other teams Safety. We won’t compromise in any aspect of safety requirements and risk. For driver safety, material strength, weld quality and assembly related clearance needs to comply 100%. Safety gears & mounting will be checked very carefully for position & manufacturing date.

BAJA SAE INDIA has grown a lot since its inception. With time the management of event has improved to a much greater scale and now we are successfully hosting 363 teams for Virtual BAJA and around 300 teams for both the main events. The inauguration of the second event at IIT Ropar has given us an additional dimension to improve the event over the coming years. Both the Pithampur and Punjab events are now ready to host the teams on a larger scale, both national and international. Every year we are getting outstanding support from the industry, both financial and technical support, which has boosted our efforts and helped us in improving the standard of BAJA SAE INDIA.

RISING STANDARDS OF BAJA SAEINDIA

1. With BAJA SAEINDIA entering into the 12th edition, how has the technical inspection criterion strengthened over the years?

Following steps to follow for design and manufacturing –a) Understand rule by reading the rule book several times.b) Selection of material with proper calculation for physical properties.c) Ensure design of fixtures and templates before actual manufacturing. d) Ensure no sharp corners & bolting which may create injury.e) Ensure good finish and workman ship for overall manufacturing.

3. How should the teams improvise during designing and manufacturing to keep compliance with the rulebook?

A person who is driving this ATV is more important and we care all those young members coming forward to take up challenges & perform under given environment. With increasing challenges every year, the risk needs to be minimized. The design should take care of all issues which may arise during dynamic events. The teams should ensure safe frame which can absorb sudden impact loads and have minimal deflections on role cage. Every joint, hardware should be safe to work in extensive conditions.

2. Why should safety be the highest priority for the teams while designing the BAJA vehicles?

The support we get from industry is not only financial but also the experts come down to ground zero to take this event to a level at which it sits now. Every year we get participation from around 200 Static Evaluation and Technical Evaluation Judges and are actively involved in various evaluations throughout the event. The technical support received from the industry helps us make this event more challenging improves the quality of participation. Companies like GM, Cummins, Continental, etc. who also sponsor the international BAJA events, bring in their experience form SAE International and boosts Indian event to reach international standards. The support from the industry has been phenomenal throughout the journey and we look forward to get the same support in the years ahead.

2. How according to you, the support from the industry has contributed towards the growth of BAJA SAE INDIA as a brand?

EXPERT SPEAK

Dr. K.C.VoraSr. Deputy Director and Head, ARAI Academy & Overall Advisor, BAJA SAEINDIA

1. How has the designs of the buggies improved over the years and what will be your advice to the teams for making lightweight yet robust designs?

Designs of buggies have improved tremendously in terms of build quality, aesthetics, durability, reliability and optimization. The overall average weight of the vehicles is now varying from 125 to 300 Kg, which was 300 to 575 Kg when this event started in India. Similarly, acceleration has improved from 0.2 to 0.7 m/sec2 to 1.0 to 5.0 m/sec2, which is an indication to the amount of research work done by the teams to optimize their design. Compact designs, benchmarking, optimization of roll cage, selecting best material, CAE analysis are some of the major areas of improvements. Teams have learnt to conduct DFMEA and DVP at component, sub-system and vehicle level. History of failures and Lessons Learnt of last few years, has helped teams to make the improved buggies every year.

2. Any tips for the teams on the “key aspect of benchmarking” before finalizing their designs?

Teams have to benchmark vehicles in the competitive environment in order to understand and to strengthen the potential of their vehicles.

provides a base on which they are going to build their thought process and then come up with an optimum design. Various attributes to be benchmarked are as follows - Performance, Weight & Compactness, Driveability, Driver Assistance Systems, Noise & Vibration, Go Green capability, Safety checks, Thermal energy management, Vehicle dynamics & handling.

3. Where does Indian buggies designs stand with respect to the top international teams?

The performance of Indian teams with respect to design has improved a lot compared with international teams over the past 2-3 years. The era has come when the Indian teams have started giving tough challenge to teams at International level and bringing home victories. The Indian buggies have become more refined & robust and as a result, they are performing well in events like Design Evaluation, Suspension & Traction and also Endurance race. Although there are still some areas to work upon like material selection &teams needs to focus on various attributes, while deciding geometries and parameters to perform really well in the events. 4. How do you think the Static Evaluation events have evolved over the years at BAJA SAEINDIA?

to make it more challenging and competitive for the teams. Based on benchmarking done by the

organizers abroad, the Design Evaluation has become tougher & robust. Last year, we tested a Mathworks: Matlab based software to record the scoring live and automatically collate the data to remove the manual scoring in future. The Judges Selection criteria and getting R&D Heads at Baja site has been a proof of remarkable support from the Industry. From team's perspective, the improved presentation skills, posters presented during the reports and materials like 3D printed prototypes are all the results of the journey BAJA SAEINDIA has traveled and we all aspire to improve it more for the years to come.

Based on the observations and the lesson’s leant over the past 4 years of eBAJA we have made some prominent changes to the rulebook and improve the knowledge and understanding of the teams over Electric Mobility concepts. The specifications of this year’s Electrical Kit are 48V, 110 Ah Battery Pack and 6kW BLDC Motor. We have fixed these specifications in order to align with the last year’s kit. One of the prominent changes made in this year’s rulebook is that students can choose their own supplier for the Electrical Kit’s based on the specifications we mentioned. However, the components shall be certified by authentic certification authorities and comply with the Automotive standards mainly to ensure the quality & safety aspects.

The country is moving in the direction of “All Electric” and with these changes we are looking forward to establishing the standards of the competition and increase the understanding of the students on the Electric Mobility concepts making them ready to conquer the future. Going forward we want the students to reach to the position where they design their own battery packs, controller and motors according to their performance requirement.

The initiative of eBAJA will prove to be the major mile stone for implementation of Electric Vehicle policy declared by Government of India. This event is helping to create confident Engineers who have started to learn the integration of Electric Motor & Electric Energy with Mechanical Drive train. Multi disciplinary students coming together to design & develop a new All Terrain Electric vehicle, for an all India Engineering student’s competition, by applying the fundamentals of Engineering and run on the track. Organizing Committee will be happy to see these Engineers becoming part of EV product development, promotion & progressively growing in India.

It has been always stated that EV’s in real sense are not Zero Pollution vehicles, but pollution elsewhere. However, with the advent of harnessing Solar Energy, Wind Energy, and Hydro power Energy, and alternate renewable sources of energy, majority of consumption and incremental demand of energy will reduce the demand on Grid.

The rule book has been attempted to completely define the specifications with utmost clarity. This will help participating student Teams to prepare their designs nicely, with better understanding of their eBAJA buggy for Virtual BAJA. The new Rules will provide learning opportunity for students to explore the best designed Electric Drive train and experience of selection process of kit items towards high performance versus longevity of energy stored in battery. In turn the students become ready for industry in terms of techno

Being associated with BAJA has always been a special experience for me. I started my journey with BAJA as a participant 4 years back as a captain of an all-girls team and it has been a wonderful journey since then. I had got a unique opportunity to lead the Alumni Committee which has given me immense exposure to people management, understanding the overall event in each aspect. Being a part of BAJA is a never ending learning experience and I am happy to be an integral part of it and make a difference to every engineer’s career

BAJA SAEINDIA has much to offer the team members than merely the experience of building and racing a vehicle. Being associated with BAJA, I have learned a lot. The skills and techniques developed throughout the different stages of this journey include project management, communication, team work and the most important thing is “creativity”, which is something most of us want more in our daily work lives. There is no doubt that the knowledge and skil ls learned from participating in this competition will carry over into the professional world.
