District & State 4-H O-Rama
Junior & Senior 4-H’ers
OBJECTIVES
• Targeted Life Skills: character, healthy lifestyle choices, and responsible citizenship. • To provide opportunity for faculty to share educational and career opportunities in the fields of
aquaculture, fisheries management and aquatic sciences. Representatives from universities and state agencies will be available to visit with participants and answer questions.
• To create more interest in the pleasure of fishing. • To increase the participants’ knowledge of fish in Arkansas and improve their accuracy in casting
through practice. ELIGIBILITY Each county may enter two Junior and two Senior 4-H members at the District 4-H O-Rama. The top seven (7) Senior 4-H’ers from each District O-Rama will be eligible to participate in the Arkansas 4-H O-Rama. ACTIVITY Both Junior and Senior activities will be conducted according to the regulations outlined in the 4-H leaflet “4-H Sport Fishing” available on-line. Each contestant is encouraged to furnish his or her own equipment. A rod/reel combo and practice plugs will be available at the district and state activity. There will be no division for fly fishing. The activity at the Arkansas 4-H O-Rama will be the same as the district activity for Seniors. JUDGING Each contestant will be judged on accuracy in casting. Each contestant will also be required to identify ten common Arkansas game fish, tested on game regulations and fishing ethics, tackle identification, fish anatomy and aquatic ecology. The points and score sheets for all of these activities are available on-line. AWARDS The first-place winner will receive a ribbon (Junior and Senior division at District 4-H O-Rama; overall winner at Arkansas 4-H O-Rama). Second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place winners will receive ribbons. No ribbons will be awarded for zero scores. Fishing tackle donated by The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission will be given as prizes to first-, second- and third-place winners. PREPARED BY Hope Bragg, Instructor, 4-H Youth Development. Revised by Hope Bragg 12/2018 .
