First WordDear Colleagues,This month’s edition of Al Fahal contains project update news reaffirming just how PDO continues to create value for our stakeholders and all Oman, no matter how testing the circumstances.The success of our Bahja Rima cluster in achieving higher production is truly impressive. Its growth journey has seen a significant oil production increase of over 30% in two years, and its leaders have tabled a business plan which offers 45% growth to 94,000 boepd by 2021 from conventional, low unit technical cost (UTC) projects.This is a particularly gratifying feat within the global upstream oil and gas industry, especially in this challenging, capital-constrained environment. Moreover, as a result of this programme, Bahja Rima is set to become the highest producing cluster in PDO within five years.At the same time, despite the economic challenges, PDO remains committed to staying the course on all its major enhanced oil recovery projects and the safe and successful completion of the alkaline surfactant polymer (ASP) trial at Marmul is an exciting step forward.The pilot produced a positive outcome on a number of fronts, including 1,488 days of Lost Time Injury (LTI)-free operations, with 30% of incremental oil recovery, surpassing the trial’s initial 20% target.The success, despite many planning, execution and operational challenges, has laid the ground for a possible wider application across PDO, potentially realising more than 200 million barrels of incremental volume.This magazine also reports on the progress at Ghaba North where a major oil project has come on stream one month ahead of schedule, US$18 million under budget and after recording seven million manhours without a Lost Time Injury.The project in the Qarn Alam cluster was commissioned on 31 August and is the third field being developed by gas oil gravity drainage (GOGD) after the Fahud and Natih fields. The project began gradually adding oil production from September and is set to reach its peak of 12,600 barrels per day next summer. The field recovery will be increased by about 11% to reach 20% with a reserves volume of about 38 million barrels.Our mega projects at Rabab Harweel and Yibal Khuff also continue to make notable progress, with the on-site arrival of six injection compressors at the former and the latter’s adoption of the Flawless Project Delivery (FPD) programme, underpinning its on-track execution.Finally, I’d like to reiterate Shell Upstream Director Andy Brown’s message to a recent town hall of PDO leaders, also featured on these pages. Andy paid tribute to the tremendous work which is being done here but also challenged us to ask ourselves: is there anything more we can do to help Oman during this challenging period? PDO has celebrated its third Process Safety Day with a stress on the importance of maintaining the strength of process safety barriers when things change.Thousands of staff and contractors participated in more than 70 engagement sessions at the Coast and Interior where team leaders, supervisors and managers used the reflective learning method which involves facilitated interactive group discussion.Through simple and engaging videos, an emotional connection was established with those attending which helped them relate better to incidents. Participants had the opportunity to discuss with colleagues, learn from each other and gain new insights.A special Process Safety Day webpage was also created where all the related material was available for easy access across the organisation and contracting community. And, at the end of each 90-minute session, participants were encouraged to identify a personal action in answer to the question “What are you going to

do differently?” and load personal commitments on the webpage.In 2014 the key message for the inaugural Process Safety Day was “Know Your Role and Play Your Part which was followed in 2015 with the theme of “No Leaks – Own Your Barriers.” This year, the theme was “I Keep My Barriers Strong All The Time.” Following the progressive trend over the last three years the effort has been to make people aware of, and understand, their precise role and how to manage process safety barriers and thus avoid undesirable incidents.

Functional Maintenance and Integrity Manager Rashid Al Harthy said: “Asset Integrity and Process Safety Management (AI-PSM) is a crucial matter for our survival and future success.“We work in an industry that involves operation of processes that contain flammable materials at high temperatures and pressures. When something goes wrong, it can go very wrong. Looking at the history of oil and gas industry it is easy to recall the dramatic consequences of major accidents to people, the environment and to reputation of companies involved.“Keeping our product in the pipe/facilities from the moment we start drilling until the moment we deliver our products to our customers is a must. Our facilities must operate with “no leaks” or incidents will occur that can cause serious injuries to our employees, contractors or neighbours, or negative environmental impact, considerable financial losses and other unwanted consequences.“Process safety requires the management of hazards from design through to the construction and operation phases. This takes the commitment of each of us, from process design through to engineering, operations, maintenance and all the roles that support these functions.“We have to control our risks by establishing and maintaining process safety barriers that act as a control against identified hazards.”Rashid added: “Good process safety management does not happen by chance and requires broad level visibility and constant active engagement with the workforce.“We must never become complacent about major accident hazards. We must never assume that we can relax our requirements on one barrier because another barrier will prevent an incident. We must retain a ‘chronic unease’ with regards to process safety that presses us to look for any emerging hazards or breakdown in our controls.“Everybody taking part in the event realised that all of us, irrespective of our discipline or location, technical or non-technical, Coast or Interior, has an important role to play in process

safety management and can make a difference between safe operations and a serious incident.”Process Safety Engineer Deepak Rajoria said: “Positive feedback was received from participants and the key objectives achieved after the engagement sessions. “People understood their role in managing process safety barriers, recognised that we cannot rely on just one barrier and were asked to go out and verify that the barriers they are responsible for are in place and working, even when things change.”

A major oil project has come on stream one month ahead of schedule, US$18 million under budget and after recording seven million manhours without a Lost Time Injury.Ghaba North in the Qarn Alam cluster was commissioned on 31 August and is the third field being developed by gas oil gravity drainage (GOGD) after the Fahud and Natih fields.However, Ghaba North is a more challenging venture due to the nature of the reservoir fracture, a thinner oil rim and a stronger water aquifer. The project began gradually adding oil production from September and is set to reach its peak production of 12,600 bpd next summer. The field recovery will be increased by about 11% to reach 20% with a reserves volume of about 38 million barrels.The Field Development Plan (FDP) for Ghaba North began in early 2006 to redevelop the field using a GOGD production mechanism by drilling gas injection, producing and observation wells to enhance oil recovery by about 11%.The construction of facilities started in mid-2014 and these were fully commissioned in August, delivering a large production station accommodating sweet and sour oil and gas handling units. These consist of four bulk and test separators, four gas lift and gas injection manifolds, three gas compressors, two surge tanks, three export pumps and multiple flowlines and pipelines.Qarn Alam Cluster Leader Shaikhan Al Khaduri said: “The commissioning of this project ahead of time and at lower than the estimated cost would have not been realised without proper and close collaboration among the concerned parties in the Oil North Directorate (OND), Central Project Delivery (CPD), Well Engineering and various functions.“It has been challenging to deliver such a major and strategic project, and therefore it is a rich source of lessons that can be taken to ongoing and future projects in the Company.“It was a challenge to determine the optimum recovery mechanism and potential ultimate recovery increase because of subsurface uncertainties in highly fractured reservoirs; and many challenges have been faced in constructing a large footprint plant to accommodate sweet and sour production, gathering and testing facilities.“Furthermore, collaboration and integration with various parties, including contractors and vendors, were major challenges during the execution phase.”At the outset of the project, a small engineering team managed different interfaces with engineering and construction personnel and material suppliers. A further hurdle was the limited availability of qualified and experienced construction contractors in the local market for the handling and planning of the construction scope for novel materials.

However, CPD and OND colleagues, in partnership with the main contractor Al Hassan Engineering, were able to overcome challenges by ensuring a high degree of collaboration and integration through meetings, workshops and site visits.Oil & Gas Portfolio Manager Said Al Maktoumi said: “The design and procurement support were done in country, and the entire building activities were completed by local construction contractor Al Hassan with the support from Local Community Contractors.

“The full commissioning and start-up activities were completed by competent PDO design, commissioning and operation personnel and the procurement and vendor management were handled by our CPD project team.”Ghaba North should add an average of about 8,000 bpd in the coming five years. It has also contributed a social investment of US$ 9.1million.Shaikhan said: “I am proud to see the facility come on stream after more than five years of hard work and joint effort from the project, engineering, operations and construction contractor teams.“The fact that the facility is sour and was executed as an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) strategy meant we encountered additional challenges compared to conventional EPC projects. These challenges were overcome with the dedication of effort and focus. Thanks to all who were involved in the execution of the project.”

Ras Al Hamra Development Project Manager Ahmed Al Shaibani has successfully completed the National Chief Executive Officer programme under the supervision of the Institute of Capability Development at the Diwan of Royal Court.

Ahmed was selected for the first cohort as one of 30 high-potential leaders out of 1,500 candidates who have undergone an extensive evaluation process.

The programme is unique in the Sultanate as it aims to provide a highly specialised business knowledge for senior-level individuals in leadership positions in 12 months. It delivers a transformational learning experience for senior Omani executives and enhanced leadership skills by helping them broaden their business knowledge and acquire strategic capabilities that can be applied in both the Sultanate and the global business context.

The programme’s strategic partners include the International Institute for Management Development in Switzerland, one of the world’s premier international business schools, and McKinsey, the leading global strategic consulting company.

Infrastructure Director Sami Lawatiya said: “This is a strategic initiative aimed at identifying and developing a community of world-class competitive Omani CEOs to reinforce the nation’s economy.

How GOGD WorksGas is injected above the oil into a secondary gas cap, which developed as the reservoir pressure declined. This controlled injection prevents any further drop in pressure and lowers the gas-oil contact.The gas flushes the oil out of the reservoir rock into the fracture system, lowering the gas-oil contact. Some of the gas mixed with the oil held in the rock, encourages flow into the fracture system where gravity drainage then takes over.

PDO has awarded three key contracts valued at US$330 million to Omani businesses for work in the north of its operations.Executives said the agreements were further evidence of the success of its In-Country Value (ICV) strategy to build a thriving SME sector and retain more of the oil and gas industry’s wealth in the Sultanate.Under the terms of the deals, earthworks will be carried out by Local Community Contractor (LCC) Najed Al Ahliya at PDO fields at Fahud, Lekhwair and Yibal and by Sarooj Construction Company at Qarn Alam and Saih Rawl. Additionally, Rukun Al Yaqeen (RAY) International will conduct electrical work across the entire north of the PDO concession area.

The contracts, which were signed at an official ceremony at Mina Al Fahal, will run for four years with options to extend into the future.The three companies have all pledged to uphold PDO’s rigorous standards on safety, quality project delivery and ICV, including the development and Omanisation of other LCCs and SMEs.Managing Director Raoul Restucci said: “This is a truly special day for us, as these contracts are testimony to the trust that PDO is placing in local companies to deliver high-calibre work in our fields, safely, responsibly and efficiently.“This is about realising our ICV ambitions to work with top-quality Omani SMEs which are staffed with committed and dedicated professionals. driver for professionalism, the propagation of values, raising the standards in the industry and developing a skilled national workforce.“We attach great importance to safety, corporate social responsibility and ICV and one of our objectives is also to ensure we hire and train Omani youngsters from our area.” And RAY International Group Chairman Dr Tahir Al Kindi said: “PDO is a very sophisticated school which shares its expertise and knowledge. It has been very supportive to us since we started 10 years ago and, through this assistance, we have progressed to becoming solution providers, introducing a number of new technologies to PDO, while at the same time sharing its commitment to safety and ICV.“This new contract is a great opportunity for us to further enhance our relationship and build up our numbers of skilled Omani staff.”

Najed Al Ahliya was formed in January 2012 and started its activities under the guidance of PDO’s ICV and LCC development programmes as an active sub-contractor on a number of major service contracts. It proved its technical capability and financial status as an independent contractor and has executed a number of construction projects including well pad locations, roadworks, and civil engineering activities.The firm has more than 150 shareholders drawn from its local community of Maqshan and is diversifying its business in construction, infrastructure and oil and gas. It has an active corporate social responsibility programme, supporting many local families and sponsoring the college education of more than 20 students. PDO ICV Operations Manager Khalfan Al Busaidy said: “PDO management and the ICV team are keen to continue the successful mission of developing Omani enterprises in specialised fields that will ultimately add value to the economy, and achieve the local objectives of making use of the talented workforce and Omani products/services.”

The Bahja Rima team has tabled an ambitious plan which is set to make the cluster the highest producing in PDO within five years.Leaders have dubbed the cluster the “Land of Diamonds” because of its rich potential and proposed a programme offering a 45% growth in production to 94,000 boepd by 2021 from conventional, low unit technical cost (UTC) projects. This would be a feat almost unprecedented in the global upstream oil and gas industry, especially in the current challenging, capital-constrained environment.Bahja Rima, which has more than seven billion barrels of oil in place, has already recorded a 30% increase over a two-year period with the addition of a huge volume of hydrocarbon resources.Cluster Leader Hamed Subhi said: “The success came from giving focus to all fronts of the business. In our long-term planning, and all fields have or are undergoing Field Development Plan (FDP) updates.“The studies have not been limited to the large fields, as the cluster is also at the forefront of PDO’s effort in unlocking value from small field assets, with FDP studies for 16 fields outsourced to Omani consulting firm Target Oilfield Services as part of the ‘Small Fields’ contract.”Bahja Rima is a cluster of 30 fields that is located in central Oman. It is characterised by its geographically scattered brown to green fields. Activities range from exploration/appraisal to development which imposes challenges as well as opportunities.Whilst considered ‘small’, the Bahja North and South fields contain oil-in-pace in excess of 1.7 billion barrels and so provide an excellent chance

to drive growth in a mature, low cost per barrel cluster. This is being done whilst demonstrating strong ICV credentials by developing skill sets and workflows of local consultants which are already being deployed internationally.Bahja Rima New Oil has grown in the last couple of years from three rigs drilling about 60 wells to seven rigs drilling 130 wells per year. New Oil production has increased four-fold with the yearly average rising from 2,400 bpd in 2014 to almost 9,400 bpd in 2016.Early monetisation of high value projects is a key driver for Bahja Rima. The cluster is using the ‘Early Development Facility’ (EDF) concept to accelerate production from the key Sadad North, Hawqa and Asfoor projects.Although Sadad North was only discovered in March 2015, strong co-operation between Exploration and the cluster resulted in a field handover within six months and to date over one million barrels of oil have already been produced. With the ‘EDF’ track being actively progressed, it is envisaged that the field will be delivered without a cash loss to PDO. This is a significant achievement, especially during times of uncertainty surrounding oil price developments. The accelerated development at Hawqa field from 2022 to 2018 should result in a net present value of US$500 million.Another critical success factor is that the existing stock of over 800 wells is well managed through focused integrated well and reservoir reviews. Daily monitoring of the production performance through Lean principles using the NIBRAS exception-based

surveillance tool has resulted in eliminating unnecessary time wasted on checking the wells, enabling immediate reaction to issues or opportunities.Furthermore, the expansion of the scope for hydraulic fracturing across several fields, turning the long-term closed-in wells into a valuable asset by intensive reviews and open-ups, and focus on the artificial lift system, have resulted in a significant increase to annual No Further Action (NFA) production and field management. The cluster NFA decline was arrested from around 10% to 6%, resulting in an NFA production increase of 4,000 bpd at a low UTC of around US$5 per barrel.The growth of production and number of wells is linked to the execution of several projects, such as the Greater Rima project, which has led to the de-bottle necking of the oil pipeline water disposal capacities. New pipelines were also built from Thuyfut all the way to Rima station, which also had its capacity upgraded.Three new stations are going to be operational within the coming two years; Zauliya gas plant (ZGP), Hawqa EDF and SDDN EDF. The fast-tracked engineering project is a key enabler in reaching the cluster’s potential as PDO’s top performer by 2021.Hamed said: “The huge growth of well stock, increase in oil and gross production, and rise in hoist and rig activities are placing a huge challenge on the Operations team which is doing a tremendous job.“Our success did not come by luck, but by using the strength of our people and giving them the right space to put their technical thoughts and creativity into action. Doing things differently, challenging the obvious and taking calculated risks have been key success factors.“The Hawqa and Asfoor appraisals, Zareef low resistivity pay projects, Zauliyah fracking and SDDN production through the well test unit are examples of success by doing things differently. We are now referring to Bahja Rima as ‘The Land of Diamonds’!”

Quality Assurance Engineer Nasser Al Azri has scaled Mount Kilimanjaro to promote the work of the Oman Cancer Association, of which he is Secretary General.Nasser raised RO 10,000 after taking seven days to climb the 19,000ft mountain, the highest in Africa, and planting the flags of Oman and OCA on the summit.He said: “To reach the peak with all the hazards of the terrain and the weather portrays the positive impact of a healthy lifestyle, a major component of prevention in cancer control and management.”OCA is a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation whose strategy is centred on cancer patients, survivors and their families. It strongly advocates and believes in the individual taking responsibility for their health as a means of combatting the disease by avoiding smoking, obesity and unhealthy foods.Nasser, a keen hiker, was in a team of 11 climbers, including nine from Oman.He said: “Once again, the Oman Cancer Association has not only reached the heights but has remained there!”

The Finance Operations (FCE) team has showcased its crucial work in driving Lean and continuous business improvement during a visit by Managing Director Raoul Restucci.The department was established last October with the aim of creating a PDO-centric central set-up to focus on process standardisation and efficiency.Staff presented several initiatives that have led to greater simplification and effectiveness and showed their newly endorsed key performance indicator (KPI) visuals.The team also displayed its “Continuous Improvement Idea Board” which has a total of 36 ideas, including 19 which have already been completed and implemented.At the end of the session, Raoul expressed his “extreme pride” in the cohesion and creativity shown.Head of Finance Operational Excellence Fadyah Jahadhamy paid tribute to the “astonishing

amount of quality work” being carried out due to the professionalism of staff.She added: “It’s about delivering first-class work, day in, day out, with a continuing focus on improvement.“The focus is to continue to deliver Lean projects and have the knowledge and expertise needed to advance the agenda for our vision of becoming world class by 2020.”The FCE team is at the forefront of embedding Lean methodology in all its processes, such as standardising the Asset Master Record (AMR) issue, and collaborating and business partnering with PDO engineers and contractors.Furthermore, it has developed an efficient budget planning tool for easy Management Information Reporting (MIR) and the elimination of reports that add no value to the business.Finance Director Haifa Al Khaifi told her FCE colleagues: “You should all be so proud of your achievements. I definitely am.”

PDO has made a major advance on its enhanced oil recovery journey with the safe and successful completion of its major operation at the alkaline surfactant polymer (ASP) trial at Marmul.The pilot produced a positive outcome on a number of fronts, including 1,488 days of Lost Time Injury (LTI)-free operations, with 30% of incremental oil recovery, surpassing the trial’s initial 20% incremental recovery target.The success, despite many planning, execution and operational challenges, has laid the ground for a possible wider application across PDO, potentially realising more than 200 million barrels of incremental volume.ASP was piloted in the Al Khalata reservoir to recover residual oil by reducing the oil-water interfacial tension through a five-spot inverted pattern consisting of one injector well, four producers, one data gathering observation well and a sampling observation well.A custom-built surface facility was designed for ASP mixing using produced water and a specialised flow loop to process the produced fluids.Incremental oil gain was assessed through the deployment of dedicated multi-phase flow meters at each producing well to reduce uncertainties and improve quantification of ASP-related incremental oil gain.Desaturation assessments were carried out through detailed surveillance activities that involved a comprehensive suite of logs and evaluation tools, including novel techniques that were used for the first time.

Successes included:• LTI free operations for 1,316,061 manhours • Stable operations throughout the pilot

(good injectivity, uptime, accurate chemical dosing, sampling and analysis, as well as detailed surveillance)

• A reduction in saturation level to an average of 29% from an initial level of 59% at the start of the pilot

• Prevention of scale formation through successful and early deployment of a scale inhibitor

• Production of saleable quality oil, free from emulsion and with only a maximum 1% increase in water saturation over water flooding.

The incremental oil gain coupled with the measured reduction in saturation demonstrated by the pilot translates into more than 80 million barrels of additional recoverable oil that can be extracted from the Al Khalata reservoir through ASP technology.Marmul-RTQ Cluster Leader Hisham Al Siyabi said: “This will significantly increase the field’s ultimate recovery, and bring it closer to top quartile performance. Additionally, the trial’s successful outcome has laid the ground for a wider application of this method within PDO, potentially realising more than 200 million barrels of incremental volumes that could be tapped from heavy oil reservoirs across South Oman.“The better-than-expected incremental oil gain, coupled with the oil quality received at flow loop, uplifts the commercial outlook for ASP full-field implementation. Feasibility work for this to

The Yibal Khuff mega project has adopted a methodology to help eliminate problems which can occur in project delivery and delay oil and gas production.

Such flaws can impact the successful commissioning, start-up and first cycle of operations.

The Flawless Project Delivery (FPD) programme provides a methodology which aims to prevent such technical defects being built into the project in the first place.

The approach is two-fold: firstly, preventing known flaws being engineered into the project; and secondly, stopping them being built into it, thereby ensuring that the contractor is executing work to professional standards.

FPD focuses on a number of critical areas such as cleanliness, tightness, integrity, operability and preservation.

In 2015 a dedicated FPD team, led by FPD Lead Evert Schuiling, was established to support the Rabab Harweel and Yibal Khuff projects, as well as conventional gas ones executed within the Central Project Delivery department.

and safe” has been adopted by his colleagues who also support both the Engineering and Procurement project phase as well as supplying co-ordinators to aid site construction.

Yibal Khuff FPD Co-ordinator Kalpesh Bhinde said: “The Yibal Khuff project (YKP) has been adopting the FPD principles from the early design stages and has been very proactive in the implementation.

“Quality is being identified as one of the key enablers of this project which aligns seamlessly with the FPD goals.”

The team’s result-driven, practical approach sets a standard for FPD implementation in PDO.

Yibal Khuff Facility Delivery Manager Abdullah Jabri commented: “The YKP aims to simplify and integrate the FPD process into the already established quality management process.”

At present, the majority of activities for the YK project take place at Petrofac (the Engineering and Procurement - EP - contractor) offices in Sharjah and Chennai, while initial site construction activities have only just started.

Around 270 potential flaws have been identified for the EP phase, and an integrated team

consisting of an FPD co-ordinator and “Q captains” from both PDO and the contractor is working to implement flaw mitigations.

Execution is fully on track as was confirmed during a recent external Operations Readiness Audit, testimony to how FPD is successfully embedded within the project.

Kalpesh said: “We are now focusing on keeping the momentum in the EP phase, while at the same time engaging with the construction contractor and setting up an FPD organisation for the construction phase.”

Yibal Khuff Project Manager Anton Brouwer added: “Quality is the number one value driver for the YKP. Flawless Project Delivery and quality both aim for the same goal: zero defects and a flawless product.”

In an effort to keep the project team up to speed with the latest developments, a quarterly FPD newsletter is being issued. This is just one of a number of initiatives that provides FPD information and highlights to the wider audience. More importantly, it gives FPD a face by putting Q captains in the spotlight, explaining their roles and recognising their performance.

Evert said: “FPD is not an isolated responsibility - we all play a role in the journey to ultimate project – and PDO – success. It’s all about hydrocarbons in the pipe without undue delay!”

Abdullah Mahrouky, Commissioning and Start-up and FPD Manager, concluded: “The YKP considers the FPD programme as good business.

“Simply put, if you fail to rigorously implement the FPD programme, then the negative result spectrum can range from small to catastrophic, with potential to cause human, social, environmental, financial and reputational harm.”

The Rabab Harwell integrated project (RHIP) has taken another major step forward with the on-site arrival of six injection compressors after the team overcame a range of engineering, design, manufacturing, testing and transportation challenges.The high-pressure, high-sour centrifugal compressors will be used primarily for partial recycling at Rabab and miscible gas injection in the Sakhiya and Dafaq fields to enable recovery of 100 million barrels of condensate and 240 million barrels of oil respectively.The units are organised in three trains and have a total design capacity of 16.5 million cubic metres per day. They have been specially manufactured by MAN Diesel and Turbo Schweiz AG in Zurich to withstand high injection pressures of 450 barg.The handled gas, which contains 50,000 parts per million of toxic hydrogen sulphide, as well as corrosive carbon dioxide, dictated the use of novel materials and gas-drying facilities, with the utmost priority being placed on health, safety and environmental considerations.

The RHIP is the largest single site installation of rotating equipment in PDO with 28 compressors of various types - centrifugal, screw and reciprocating - and more than 140 pumps representing a total procurement spend of more than a quarter of a billion dollars, excluding engineering and construction activities.Each of the six compressor packages comprises three main skids: a compressor, gearbox and motor of an assembled length of about 20 metres as well as separate auxiliary systems. The heaviest skid in each compressor weighs a staggering 80 tons.The packages are being manufactured, packaged and tested in more than 10 different countries, including Oman where six lube oil coolers were fabricated and tested, supporting the local economy and boosting the In-Country Value contribution.Key to the success of the delivery of the order was to standardise the design with the injection compressors at Harweel 2AB along with the use of PDO experience and knowledge in the field of high-pressure, high-sour environments. compressors for Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) is one of PDO’s corporate milestones for 2016. The achievement came through close follow-up at regular management progress review meetings in three locations: Muscat, Sharjah (the engineering and procurement - EP - contractor base) and Zurich (the vendor’s base), as well as specific steering committee meetings attended by Technical Director Amran Al Marhubi.Site transportation of injection compressor skids and their auxiliary systems was one of the challenges due to the heavy lifting involved. Most of the skids were shipped to Sohar Port and local logistics contractors were employed for site delivery, including the transport of air coolers, which were manufactured locally in Sohar by Arabian Industries Manufacturing.RHIP Project Manager Abdullah Al Aufi said: “We are proud to see the injection compressors have been safely and successfully tested and delivered to the RHIP site.

“We established a really energetic team, which was well connected with the EP contractor and vendor to build a healthy working environment to closely manage the execution throughout various stages and promptly overcome the challenges.“The team collaboration and management support was instrumental in achieving this corporate milestone.”RHIP Facility Delivery Manager Ahmed Al Hassan said: “The journey is still on until the injection compressors are resting safely on their respective foundations and are thereafter commissioned. Shell Upstream Director Andy Brown has appealed to PDO to redouble its efforts on safety and cost control during a town hall session with Company leaders.

Andy paid tribute to the “tremendous PDO machine and organisation” during the hour-long session, in which he also covered various aspects of Shell’s activities and performance.

Referring to the low oil price environment, he said: “This is a time of enormous uncertainty.

“The projects we are executing are getting a lot cheaper…and we need to ask ourselves how on earth are we going to stay competitive in a world where everybody is getting better rather fast.”

on safety, adding: “It is not about doing silly things. It is not about sacrificing safety. It is about being smarter.

“My challenge as a shareholder in your business is: are there ways in which we can discharge our duties, keeping production high but continuing to find ways to unlock this at a lower cost?

“Are there ways that you as a company can help the state of Oman through these difficult times?”

Andy said PDO’s ability to adapt to the changing circumstances was “essential” to the country’s progress and urged PDO executives and managers to “ask what more can we do? What else is out there?”

And he paid tribute to the level of innovation already taking place at PDO, especially the scale of technology deployment and the focus on Leaner ways of working, commenting: “You are achieving almost the impossible.

“When I look around, it is fantastic.”

Managing Director Raoul Restucci said the current difficulties in the oil and gas industry meant that the outlook was going to be tough for several years, and issued a rallying call: “It is all hands on deck to really get control of costs as much as we can.

“Both on safety and also on the cost front, we feel enormous pressure and we will all have to pull together.”

More than 50 leaders and asset managers from Shell have visited PDO to learn more about Lean and accelerate its implementation in their own company.

Managing Director Raoul Restucci and People and Change Director Ibtisam Al Riyami hosted the “Go See” engagement which showcased PDO’s continuous improvement (CI) journey.

The gathering also included a presentation on PDO’s Lean Management System, a Kaizen event on operational excellence and a live demo of using exception-based surveillance in day-to-day well and reservoir management.

The visitors included Simon Roddy, Shell Upstream’s Vice President of Cost Leadership and Continuous Improvement, and Richard Howe, Vice President Deepwater, Global Production Excellence.

Learning About Lean

They took part in a question and answer session with Managing Director’s Committee members, who shared their Lean learning and experience, and also participated in six Gemba walks at various work locations where they met staff and practiced CI ways of working.

Oil South Operations Manager Ali Al Lamki said the Shell contingent was “inspired and energised” by the visit, adding: “There were several reflections and commitments about how

to replicate the success PDO has achieved, and to follow up for more learning.”

The visit was part of a three-day Shell Asset Manager Conference in Oman.

Change Programme Consultant Salim Al Mahruqi said: “The “Go See” at PDO was considered one of the key sessions in the conference.

RAH Project Celebrates New First For Oman

Raising Lifting Standards

A new system for lifting operations training has been launched focusing on providers with industrial accreditation from international certification bodies.The move is part of a drive to improve and bring greater consistency to lifting standards, cut Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) and reduce costs.PDO will no longer separately approve such training. Instead, the Company is advising all hoisting and lifting approved training providers to obtain accreditation from the following bodies: the Association of Industrial Truck Trainers (AITT), the Independent Training Standards Scheme and Register (ITSAR), the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPOSR), the Road Transport Training Board (RTTTB) and the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF).The final date for issuing the current lifting permits under the old system was September 1. Licences issued on or before that date will remain valid for three years, so the last validity date for current lifting permits, with the PDO logo, is September 1 2019.The Lifting Equipment (UEQ3) team has recruited four Omanis as lifting assessors based in the Interior. These will conduct planned and structured competency assessments in the workplace, in-field and on the job to provide assurance of compliance. Lifting Engineer Fahad Al Rabani said: “The new system is being adopted to reduce the cost of hoisting and lifting training and to ensure consistency of training to international standards. “It will also allow contractors to use accredited lifting operators in any location in Oman, as ABA (Accreditation Body Association) accreditation is recognised internally by PDO, by other operators in Oman and internationally.”PDO has suffered eight LTIs related to lifting so far this year, with most incidents due to non-compliance with standard lifting procedures.Senior Lifting Engineer Khalifa Al Jamoudi urged personnel to:• Always comply with the standard lifting

procedures and never take a shortcut• Carry out all lifting activities under proper

supervision• Stay out of the ‘line of fire’ • Permit only competent people to be involved in

lifting operations.He also appealed to banksmen to ensure a clear view of the surroundings of forklift truck movement paths and told those not directly involved in loading to stay in a safe area away from the operation.Khalifa said: “All contractors who are involved in lifting operations are required to ensure and confirm the competence of lifting crew and all lifting operations are to be carried out in compliance with PR 1708 and PR 1709.“The UEQ3 Lifting section is here to provide any support or consulting services, so don’t hesitate to call if you are in doubt.”

The Ras Al Hamra development project (RAHDP) has broken new ground by becoming the first residential scheme in Oman to build homes using Light Gauge Steel (LGS) technology.LGS, which has previously been employed in offices such as the Bait Al Bushra building, has been used for Saham Heights, a striking new addition to the RAH estate.LGS primarily ensures a faster construction process and it was therefore decided to undertake a pilot project as a prototype within the RAHDP to test the key performance indicators for potential use in the future phases, and hopefully lead the construction market to adopt new and alternative building techniques.The pioneering methodology involves lightweight steel components which are constructed in frames; these components are assembled on- site to create the structural frame of the building, a proven time saver compared to conventional poured concrete structures.The work is mainly divided between two teams, on-site and off-site, which cuts down the amount of labour and construction waste that is generated at the site. This also means the ratio of supervisors to workers is improved, leading to better quality control and less health, safety and environment (HSE) exposure.As using LGS was a new departure for the Sultanate’s residential market, the RAH team faced a number of challenges.

These included:

• Integrating current RAH sustainability and quality standards with the new LGS concept

• Availability of skilled and experienced labour in the market to carry out the work

• Providing LGS-oriented HSE training for unskilled personnel

• Finding qualified vendors to integrate their products and services within the new environment

• Maintaining the same levels of quality attained

by previous conventional construction technology.

These challenges impacted the overall delivery schedule and therefore the success criteria objectives for this project. However, this methodology clearly demonstrated the time benefits and that it should be considered for future projects if the required skilled labour is available and the other learnings are adopted.Despite the site area constraints, the project - which comprises 25 residential units and associated infrastructure – achieved approximately 1.5 million safe manhours with no Lost Time Injuries since its inception.The LGS for Saham Heights was supplied by a local manufacturer at a cost of US$ 2.46 million, boosting In-Country Value (ICV). The project team also achieved an ICV ratio of 59.23% for local goods compared to a target of 40.54%, and 29.98% on local services against the 20.82% committed to initially during the tendering process.For the first time, the RAH team used a group of 12 Omani scaffolders, who were from the first batch to be certified with Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) training.And, in line with the Company drive on cost control, it undertook a scope optimisation and value engineering initiative which resulted in savings in excess of US$1.1 million.RAH Development Project Manager Ahmed Al Shaibani said: “Teams from various disciplines have shown strong commitment to work together on design and logistics challenges, while delivering these units to high quality standards.“The achievement of this Infrastructure Directorate milestone is a testament to inter-disciplinary collaboration, hard work and effective project management.”And Saham Heights Contract Holder Amroo Hinai said: “With internal staging of the project timeline and continuous monitoring of procurement and productivity, the RAH team managed to execute the project within time and budget constraints.”

If you have visited any of PDO’s mature fields, such as Marmul or Saih Rawl, you might have wondered if there is sufficient space to drill any more wells. Urban planning originates from town planning and this is exactly the sort of question that it helps address.In PDO, this approach is applied to off-plot surface facilities and supporting infrastructure to aid in the conceptual decisions about, and definition of, future surface infrastructure and wells. This process of urban planning is described in a corporate guideline (GU-820) released this year. This sets out a standard methodology for how to conduct urban planning with the early involvement of all disciplines and has been rolled out across PDO.An Urban Planning (XGG1) team has been created within the Geomatics department and focal points appointed within Central Concept Engineering

The Central Project Delivery (CPD) leadership team has congratulated staff and contractors for their progress on the Saih Nihayda and Kauther depletion compression phase 2 projects after a top-level engagement in India.CPD Manager Shihab Barwani, Gas and Oil Portfolio Manager Said Maktoomi and Project Manager Saleh Hammadi attended the first steering committee meeting with Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor Larsen & Toubro at its office in Baroda. Senior executives from the main compressor vendor General Electric also attended.The meeting came 150 days after the award of

both the SNDC2 and KDC2 contracts to L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Ltd.All parties underlined their commitment to deliver projects as per the agreed schedule. On the second day of the visit, Shihab and Said addressed the project team, which is centralised in Baroda, on CPD’s current and future plans and heard from the team on the project’s progress. There was also a presentation regarding project initiatives and a development programme for young construction engineers.Shihab said: “This was a great opportunity for me

to see closely the hard work put in by our team.”And Said added: “I would like to applaud the project and L&T for the team spirit shown and would encourage all to maintain the same approach until project completion.”The purpose of the projects is to install second-stage depletion compression at the Saih Nihayda and Kauther gas plants to sustain production following a natural decline in reservoir pressure.Saleh said: “I’m honoured to have the CPD leadership team visiting the project team and appreciating the efforts put in by all.”

Urban Planning Creates Value

(UEP2) and each asset. Early use of this guideline has already created value for PDO in terms of increasing recoverable volumes, earlier decision making, capital expenditure (Capex) savings, and lower health, safety and environment (HSE) risks.In Saih Rawl, urban planning early in the project development ensured that wells were drillable and the associated infrastructure could be accommodated. Integrated urban planning enabled these wells to be drilled despite insufficient space to accommodate standard pits and pads.This has allowed the maturation of one million cubic metres of oil in the re-development of this field, which created US$150 million in value. Field Development Centre Manager Junaid Ghulam said: “70% of our field developments are for brownfields and urban planning plays a critical role in generating additional value from these fields.”

Tangible benefits have also been achieved with earlier decision making in the field development process. Approximately one month has been saved by including all relevant disciplines and stakeholders in urban planning from the earliest stages.In areas such as the Qarn Alam cluster, overlying and neighbouring reservoirs have different shareholders, such as Government Gas and BP. Here, competition for the available land is managed by an integrated working group using a common database, which is available to staff via PDO Earth.Recent projects have demonstrated that urban planning can save approximately 10% in off-plot Capex, or about US$100 million in the next five years for PDO’s congested fields. These savings come from optimising the routing of flowlines and overhead lines, as well as the location of manifolds and from sharing well pits and pads.Engineering Project Delivery Manager Julian Masters said: “Urban planning is very important in making quality decisions, especially for our cluttered off-plot scope. Right now, with the prolonged low oil prices, I believe good urban planning really helps us push forward cost effective projects and the new guideline will help us all to do this well.”Importantly, urban planning has also helped reduce the risk of future safety and environmental incidents, particularly during rig movements. Early involvement of drilling engineers ensures there is sufficient access for rigs and their movements, with appropriate clearance to overhead lines and flowlines/bulk lines.

PDO women’s network Hawa celebrated Omani Women’s Day in style to mark the social and economic achievements of women in the Sultanate.Hundreds of female staff gathered for a group photo and the cutting of a special cake by Managing Director Raoul Restucci.At an executive level, there are four females on the Managing Director’s Committee, a beacon for the region and industry, and a strong and growing female talent pool.Raoul thanked PDO’s women for being “key players” and making a “huge difference.”He added: “We want PDO’s workforce to be representative of the diversity of our business, our portfolio and our stakeholders.“We need our workplace to be inclusive when it comes to gender, ethnicity, age, and so much more and to ensure that we capitalise on the variety of viewpoints and experience this diversity brings, so that together we can make the right decisions for our business, now and in the future. Simply put, diverse and inclusive teams drive high performance because everyone feels valued.“Women have consistently made a significant contribution in the workplace to both public and private sectors and their role continues to expand with more opportunities being created.”The Company has 963 women employees, including 826 Omanis. There are 470 Omani women working in technical functions (including Petroleum Engineering, Well Engineering and Exploration). The number has nearly doubled in the past five years and tripled since 2006.Omani women also occupy 356 positions in non-technical functions compared to 266 in 2011. مجددا استمرارها في إيجاد القيمة ألصحاب الشأن وللسلطنة برمتها مهما استعصت الظروف.وفي هذا السياق، نجح فريق مجموعة “ريما-بهجة” العنقودية في تحقيق معدالت إنتاج عالية مما يدعو حقا لإلعجاب؛ فقد شهدت رحلة نمو الحقل زيادة كبيرة في إنتاج النفط تربو على 30٪ في غضون عامين، وطرح الفريق القيادي خطة عمل تستشرف نسبة نمو قدرها 45٪ بحيث يصل اإلنتاج إلى 94 ألف برميل في اليوم

حقلي فهود ونتيه. وبدأ المشروع تدريجيا في إنتاج النفط منذ سبتمبر المنصرم، ومن المتوقع أن يصل ذروته بمعدل 12600 برميل 11٪ ليصل إلى 20٪ حيث يبلغ حجم المقبل. وسيزداد معدل االستخالص من الحقل بنحو يوميا في الصيف

احتياطياته زهاء 38 مليون برميل.كما واصل مشروعانا العمالقان “رباب- هرويل” و”جبال- خف” تقدمهما الملحوظ مع وصول ستة من أجهزة الضغط في موقع المشروع األول وتبني المشروع الثاني برنامج “إنجاز المشاريع بدون أية أخطاء” مما يدعم
