If you think BAFTA is about one Awards ceremony a year, think
again: our year is packed with film, television and games events, fundraising and archive activity, a number of prestigious Awards ceremonies and much, much more.
The British Film Academy was formed on 16 April 1947 when a group of the most eminent names in the British film industry gathered together under the chairmanship of the great British director, David Lean. Their fundamental aim was “to recognise those who had contributed outstanding
creative work towards the advancement of British film”. Eleven years later, the Academy merged with the Guild of Television Producers and Directors to form The Society of Film and Television Arts, before becoming officially known as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in 1976.
We currently have around 6,500 industry members from across the globe. The members remain at the heart of what we do; as well as voting for our Awards, many members give their precious time to help inspire, enthuse and mentor the next generation of talent.

As a charity we aim to inspire people of all ages and all
backgrounds to connect with and learn from the most successful people in the business. There is a wealth of creative and talented people out there and BAFTA wants to ensure that this talent is nurtured and supported.
In the UK, we run over 250 learning events and initiatives across film, television and games every year: masterclasses, lectures, competitions, mentoring schemes and industry debates. For the younger generation, BAFTA Kids provides a fantastic opportunity for them to use their creative minds and explore the many opportunities that are out there. For those who are beginning to establish their careers, BAFTA Crew provides a networking and skills development programme bringing young professionals together with major award-winning talent.
We provide opportunities for young people, career starters and emerging talent to access advice and make the connections they need to progress.

The BAFTA Archive is a precious history of the Academy, of
people who have participated in British film and television over the last 67 years and more recently games, and of the techniques they used. We at BAFTA would like to see this history preserved and made available to those interested in and passionate about the moving image through exhibitions and as online resources.
We want everyone to know about the moment when Audrey Hepburn and Richard Attenborough won Best Actress and Best Actor awards respectively in 1965 or when Four Weddings and a Funeral won a magnificent five BAFTAs in 1995. BAFTA would like to keep these memories alive and with your help we want to make a wealth of material available and accessible for generations to come.

A BAFTA driven campaign with the aim of connecting young people with some of the best film, television and game makers, who will help inspire and guide their careers in the industries.
We at BAFTA want to support emerging talent
from all walks of life to use their creative skills in a career within the moving image. Initiatives include mentoring, scholarships, masterclasses and in-school talks.
We already work with a range of partners and schools such as the BFI Academy, STEMNET, Speakers For Schools, Into Film and IdeasTap.
We want the campaign to benefit as many people as possible but also to harness our industry expertise in order to both recognise those with talent and aptitude from all backgrounds and support their development through more targeted programmes. Our research shows that having access to others in the industry is a major factor in success, so we continue to seek your support in bringing together the best of today’s talent to inspire and inform the industry and audience of tomorrow.

The moving image plays a huge part in our lives, feeding our
minds and imaginations and helping our culture to grow. BAFTA’s Learning & Events programme encourages the public to deepen their understanding of this art form, it nurtures new and emerging talent and helps to ensure the creative industries we support achieve the highest standards.
To continue supporting, promoting and developing new and diverse talent in the film, television and games industries we want to:
• Assist more outstanding talents in need of financial support with a BAFTA Scholarship;
• Further diversify the film, television and games industries, ensuring our learning audiences not only reflect the diversity of our industries (as they currently are) but match the diversity of the UK population as a whole;
• Engage young people across the UK in a range of exciting craft roles in the film, television and games industries;
• Introduce more talented individuals to mentors who can demystify the industry, offer guidance, and champion their ability;
• Help young people discover how they can find out more about how the industry works from the experts themselves.

The BAFTA Breakthrough Brits initiative seeks
out the stars of tomorrow and supports their career development over the course of the year. The Breakthrough Brits are chosen by a jury of industry experts after a UK-wide open call for applications and nominations. We are currently supporting 18 outstanding individuals through a bespoke year-long programme, offering mentoring, guidance and invitations to BAFTA events.
Since the announcement in September 2014, actor and writer Jonathan Asser went on to win the Writer Film/ Television trophy at the British Academy Scotland Awards for his remarkable screenplay for British prison drama, Starred Up.

Each year BAFTA’s Scholarships Programme assists
students in need of financial support to undertake a post-graduate course related to a career in film, television or games. We offer a range of global scholarships annually, with programmes in the UK, USA and Hong Kong.
When the UK programme began in 2012, Daisy Jacobs was awarded almost £10,000 to help fund her MA in Directing Animation at the National Film and Television School. Now a BAFTA scholar alumna, Daisy recently won the FremantleMedia UK New Talent Award at this year’s Women in Film and Television Awards.
Her animation film The Bigger Picture has also won a range of awards at numerous festivals including Creative Innovation in a Short Film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival and Best Graduation Film at this year’s Annecy International Animated Film Festival. It is nominated for Best Short Animation at the EE British Academy Film Awards in 2015 and the Oscar for animated short film.

The BAFTA Rocliffe New Writing Forum helps new writers
develop their work under the guidance of the very best in the business and introduces them to the industry.
Each year, BAFTA holds several calls for submissions of film and television script extracts. Targeting aspiring screenwriters, each entrant receives feedback on their script from a panel of industry experts and a lucky few have their work performed, giving them a fantastic opportunity to take their writing career to the next level.
Louis Paxton’s script The Spare Room was featured at the TV Drama Forum in April 2014 and was subsequently picked up by BBC Comedy. Louis is now on his third draft for BBC Three and has a show in development with a well-known television producer.
“Thanks again for all your help, Rocliffe was an incredible experience and it really has given me a lot… The Spare Room was the first time I’d written for television, and I used the deadline of Rocliffe to push it out and ensure people would read it. I’m so pleased I entered!”

The BAFTA Young Game Designers initiative and
competition has grown over a number of years offering 10 to 18 year olds the chance to learn about digital technology by designing their own game, learning from professionals and further developing their winning games.
Dan Pearce’s BAFTA journey started when he was awarded the BAFTA Young Game Designers prize in 2010 aged 16. He pursued a career in games and just three years later was named one of
BAFTA’s Breakthrough Brits. He is now an independent game developer and his creation Castles in the Sky (in collaboration with Jack de Quidt) was nominated for Debut Game at the British Academy Games Awards in 2014.
Dan was nurtured through the BAFTA Young Game Designers initiative and has said that winning this prize was undoubtedly one of the best things that could have happened to him and his team.
