e have made it to twenty-one! We have again increased the orderfor beer and cider and are now
cramming into the hall about as much as itwill hold – about 20,000 pints of some 180different beers. We cannot put all of thebeer that we have on the stillage from thestart. You will see that many casks are onthe floor below it. They can only be rackedwhen a space occurs, and so a beer that youparticularly want may not be availableimmediately. This is the only way that we cando it, so please understand our situation. We do not hold back beer; once it is ready togo on sale – and it has to be ready becausewe will not compromise on quality – it goes onsale until it is sold. I know that some peoplefind that the hall gets cold, but please bearwith us because this is to make sure that thebeer remains in the best possible conditionand after all, we are here for the beer.
CAMRA’s LocAle campaign is very importantto us but both the Pig’s Ear Festival lastDecember and the London Drinker Festival (9 to 11 March) heavily feature London beersand so we have spread our net more widelyto bring you what we hope is the best inBritish real ale, mostly from small or mediumsized breweries. We are not a ‘winter ales’ or‘dark beers’ festival but we hope that ourrange will cover all tastes. Our particularspeciality is the standard ‘session’ bitter. Thebeer list later in this programme gives youtasting notes.
In line with CAMRA policy, our beers areserved in oversized, lined glasses. With yourglass you will find a voting form for ‘Beer ofthe Festival’. Please let us know not justyour favourite real ale but cider, perry andforeign beer as well. Breweries really value
Battersea Beer Festival 20113

This event is organised and staffed entirely byunpaid volunteers, not just from South WestLondon Branch but also many other branches ofCAMRA. Any funds generated are passed toCAMRA centrally to be used for campaigning.Thanks are due to all of those who have put in alot of hard work and have given up many hoursof their free time. I know that some CAMRA members feel thatthe discount allowed on admission prices toCAMRA members is minimal, but thiswonderful venue is appropriately expensiveto hire and our policy is to recover what wefeel is a reasonable proportion of that costfrom all visitors. That way we can keep thebeer prices down and I think that mostCAMRA members will find themselvesbenefiting from that over a session.
As ever, we also have a good range ofimported beers – both draught and bottled –selected by Bar Manager Peter J Sutcliffefrom his wide personal knowledge. A goodsupply of traditional ciders and perries willbe found downstairs in the Lower Hall alongwith the country wines and a new feature, arange of bottle-conditioned beers. Alsodown there you will find the ever-popularCAMRA Tombola plus, for the first time thisyear, some pub games. Free soft drinks willbe available in both halls.
Food is again being provided by our oldfriend Kam Kamienski, whose substantialofferings, including some traditional Polishrecipes, are more than welcome on a winter’sday. Snacks are also available: pleaseenquire. Please note that the seating in theservery area is reserved for diners.
Traditionally we have supported theBattersea Dogs & Cats Home and they willbe collecting donations again this year. For asupposed nation of animal lovers, cats anddogs often get the rough end of any hardtimes, so do please support them. In 2010they re-homed 13,500 abandoned or lostanimals.
CAMRA Membership. It is often said thatCAMRA’s work is done, but one look at aboarded-up pub will tell you that it most
certainly is not. If you have an interest inreal ale and the pubs that serve it, why notjoin CAMRA? You will be one of an ever-growing movement. Over the last yearCAMRA membership has increased by some10% to almost 120,000. CAMRA is a not-forprofit body which is run locally andnationally by elected, unpaid volunteers andis completely independent of anycommercial interest. Whilst we needactivists, our real strength is in numbers. Formore information please come and see us atthe Membership Stand at the front of themain hall as you enter the festival.

aunched in 2007 by CAMRA'sNottingham branch, LocAle promotespubs stocking locally brewed real ale.
The London branches have defined a LocAleas one brewed within 30 miles from the pub.The scheme builds on a growing consumerdemand for quality local produce and anincreased awareness of 'green' issues.
Everyone benefits:public houses as stocking local real ales canincrease pub visits;
consumers who enjoy greater beer choiceand diversity;
local brewers who gain from increased sales;
the local economy because more money isspent and retained locally;
the environment due to fewer ‘beer miles'
resulting in less road congestion andpollution.
The scheme has continued to grow since ourlast festival; there are now about 70 LocAlebadged pubs across London, including 17 inour branch:
SW2 Crown & SceptreSW4 Coach & HorsesSW8 Priory ArmsSW11 Draft House Westbridge, Eagle AleHouse, Falcon, Lighthouse, NorthcoteSW12 NightingaleSW15 Bricklayer’s ArmsSW16 Earl FerrersSW18 Armoury, Cat’s Back, RoundhouseSW19 Brewery Tap, Hand in Hand, Trafalgar
Most LocAle pubs in the branch takeSambrook’s, making it very LocAle. Here atBattersea, we have 13 beers from within 30miles from the hall: look out in the list forthose marked

Great British BeerYou will recall that at previous festivalswe have had one of a series of localguides to our branch area. We have nowcompleted our series, and you can buy theset at the Products Stand. This year, weare launching a London CAMRA leaflet onthe beer styles of Britain – where betterthan at a festival where you can samplemost of the styles in one place! You willsee that some of the different beers arecolour coded in this programme. If you’veever wondered what exactly is a mild,why is ‘bitter’ bitter or just what is porter,but didn’t want to ask, then pick up theleaflet from the Products Stand.

eers are arranged generally (but notabsolutely) alphabetically by breweryaround the bar. Where there is more
than one beer from a brewer, these are listedalphabetically, not by strength. Differentcolours are used to indicate Milds, Stouts,Porters and Old Ales and Strong Bitters and
IPAs. These colours match the colour codingon labels behind the bars. Please note: not allbeers will be available all the time – somewill be ready later than others or sell outsooner. Also, the beers available may havechanged slightly since the programme wentto print.

Breweries in SouthWest LondonThe South West London branch of CAMRAcovers the London Boroughs of Wandsworthand Merton and the south-western part ofLambeth. A hundred years ago, there weresome nine breweries in the branch area. Bythe 1970s there was just one: Young’s ofWandsworth, itself ceasing brewing in 2006.A number of micros have come and gone inrecent years and only one brewery is nowoperating in the branch area. This isSambrook’s, established in Battersea in 2008,with Wandle (3.9%), its session beer, and alsoJunction (4.5%) available in several localoutlets, Including a number of Young’s pubs.Late last year saw the launch of a third beer:Powerhouse Porter (4.9%).
