BADM 205 Business Statistics Fall 2013
Instructor: Stephen J. Silver, Ph.D., 358 Bond Hall, Tel: (843) 953-5163 (office)
or (843) 276-5406 (Cell) Web Page: http://faculty.citadel.edu/silver/
OFFICE HOURS: Wed: 5 – 5:45; Tues and Thurs: 2 – 3, by appt. only. To make an appointment, call
me on my cell phone or contact me via email before coming to see me, otherwise I may not be in my
office. My email address is: [email protected]
COURSE DESCRIPTION: The student examines the application of statistical analysis to business
situations. Descriptive and inferential statistics, probability and random variables, and sampling and
statistical forecasting are included.
INCOMING COMPETENCY OF STUDENT EXPECTED BY INSTRUCTORS: Ability to work with
simple algebraic formulas and concepts. All students MUST have completed The Citadel's MATH 104
or equivalent.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Demonstrate the application of statistical theory to practical business situations and data.
2. Develop skills in statistical analysis and interpretation of business data.
3. Develop insight into the selection and application of statistical tests and methods appropriate to a
broad scope of business issues.
4. Integrate personal computers and statistical programs into the solution of problems and statistical
tests.
REQUIRED TEXT: There is not a required textbook for this course; in past years I have used Statistics
for Business and Economics, by James T. McClave, P. George Benson and Terry Sincich, Prentice-Hall.
You may wish to purchase that book to assist you in the course. Any recent edition will be OK and you
can save $$$ over the latest edition.
Instead, we will use course lecture notes I have developed over the years, as well as videos of past
lectures. Links to the videos are found on the last page of this syllabus. The statistics notes can be found
at http://faculty.citadel.edu/silver/ba604/statistics.pdf. The notes covering probability theory are found
at: http://faculty.citadel.edu/silver/ba604/prob_theory.pdf.
A set of problems written by me can be found at the following URLs:
http://faculty.citadel.edu/silver/stats_exercises.pdf and
http://faculty.citadel.edu/silver/prob_exercises.pdf. Please try to work on these problems and give me feedback on any difficulties you have and any
improvements I can make to them.
Many of the problems for chapters 6-10 can be done with the help of my Statistics Template. To execute
the template click HERE.
GRADING:
Item % of Final Grade
Tests I - IV (15% each) 60
Projects 1 – 3 (5% each) 15
Final Exam or Project 20
Attendance & Participation 5
Total 100
In addition to the four tests, there will be three short projects and a final exam or project. I will provide
examples and advice on the projects. Homework problems will not be graded as they are intended to
hone your skills so that you will do well on the tests. I will also make available several (ungraded)
practice quizzes. The homework and projects will be completed by the students using MS Excel.
COURSE PARTICIPATION: You are all expected to attend and participate in this course.
