The Understanding by Design (UbD) provided teachers and school heads with
a framework for designed competencies for effective teaching.
Ideally, as teachers, they are actively involved with learners. At the heart of the
involvement is the teaching-learning process which is characterized by dynamism and
relevance.
However, learners are experiencing a decline in class participation.
Nevertheless, the initiative of DepEd attempts to reverse this trend. Schools offer
a new unique opportunity to reach a large number of learners to become participative.
Thus, the realization of the Teaching MAPEH using Understanding by Design
(UbD).

One of the subjects being implemented in the curriculum of Teacher Education and its
required for a graduating student, so that he/she can accomplish his/her academic grade is the
EDUCATION 15 ( SPECIAL TOPICS). One of the highlights of the subject is for us to organize
and sponsor a seminar. This subject aims to discuss a certain or special topic that has a
connection to the latest trends and issues as far as teaching and teacher are concerned, so that
future teachers like us will be aware and we can be able to handle if we encounter or
experience such. This subject is handled by our very own dean. Dr. Arlene O. Monsalve. The objective of the seminar – “Teaching MAPEH Using Understanding by Design
(UbD)”, is to provide student teachers in MAPEH accurtate information, new ideas, and skill-
enhancing activities that will reinforce the UbD which is currently used in 1st
and 2nd
year high
schools.

Every year before the school year starts. The teachers are required to attend seminars
or in-service training in order to updates the education curriculum. Yes, this is very important for
us to know how and understand well the new methods, strategies to introduce in this particular
year. For this year as mandatory by DepEd Department of Education our school, adopt the new

curriculum entitled UbD. At first UbD is a strange word for me. I do not know the meaning,purpose and the real essence of applying this UbD. However, with help of seminar sponsored
by phoenix publishing house, in-service trining, reading, and co-teachers little by little I learned
about UbD.
By its acronym UbD, it stands for Understanding by Design according to the proponents
Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, 2005. The UbD focuses more on performance, assessments
and classroom instruction. This is about on teaching for understanding and backwards
designing of curriculum. As what I erudite, UbD is a good planning design of curriculum.
However, it needs more materials, references, patience and of course time to prepare a lesson
compare to a typical teaching instructions. I hope this year we will be given ample time to
prepare, familiarize the whole processes of UbD. In addition, feed backing and constant
monitoring of this program. This is great help for us to know, if we are on the right track.

Table 1.1 was the overall rating of the seminar. The participants evaluated the
Resource Speaker; the Snacks; and the Audio-visual presentation being utilized.
Table 1.2 shows that the participants evaluated the seminar how important it is.
From the given tally presented in the table it shows that it is very important to them
because the topic is relevant to latest issues concerning education and also the
participants find it very important because of the substantial information being given and
lectured by the speaker.
Table 1.3 shows the level of understanding of the participants, they evaluated
the seminar as well as the topic according to their level of understanding, and it shows
that the participants are not the same in comprehending the topic.
