BACK IN THE 60s AGAIN PARTS ONE & TWO
Walled Lake Casino Showplace This is where it happened; 25 miles from Detroit on the shores of Walled Lake. It was
never a casino as its name implies, but a dance and showplace of enormous stature.
Beginning with a small dance hall and bath house, then an enormous amusement park
with a roller coaster that could be seen and heard for miles it became a music and
entertainment mecca that was a magnet for performers from every corner of the globe.
First, the big bands. No name was too big. They all came. They wanted to come.
Sinatra, Dorsey, Louis Armstrong, Laurence Welk, Glen Miller. Hundreds more
attracting thousands every week just to listen, dance, and in some years for just a few
hours try and forget the horrors of war and sons and daughters lost.
Then came television and in the 50s a new kind of music.
Radio was playing rock and rhythm and blues.
Young people turned away from the big bands.
With the death of the bands came what seemed to be the end of the
Walled Lake Showplace..

The crowds were no longer there. The bands were gone. The doors were closed.
Red and Cleo Kraemer bought the old dance hall, insulated it and installed heat for the
winters in hopes to revive what it was.
Their efforts failed. The bands were dead and no one cared. Mr. and Mrs. Kraemer
hired a few radio disc jockeys to hold record dances. The DJs would play records and
have some local rock bands perform. There was moderate success, but not enough to
sustain the owners.
It didn’t work.
That’s when it happened. Through a strange set of circumstances the Walled Lake
Showplace was not only reborn; but became a larger version of its former self.
Coinciding with the Motown Music Explosion the entire area became the focus of
entertainers worldwide with their new music. A must place for them to play, to promote
their records and themselves.
For some it placed them on a national stage and made their careers.
The throngs that came during the big band days were small gatherings compared to the
tens of thousands that now jammed Walled Lake and other venues in the microcosm
that for a fleeting era became the music capital of the world..
The Motown music explosion burst upon Detroit.
For years they came.
Bigger names, bigger crowds.
People dancing, laughing, talking, enjoying.
They came there, sang there, and played there, fell in love there.

Stevie Wonder’s first appearance was there,
The Four Seasons, now known on Broadway and other cities as “Jersey Boys” ,
Chuck Berry, the Supremes,
Rolling Stones hundreds of others.
They all came.
They made music, played a part in memories for thousands of people who flocked to
see them. All there on shores of Walled Lake in Novi, Michigan. The signatures of
every performer were inscribed on a secret wall backstage.

Then a mysterious raging fire destroyed it all.
100 men, seven fire departments and 20 pieces of equipment couldn’t save it. The wall
was gone. The Showplace was gone. Ashes in its place. All gone.
All except for the memories.
The 13 acre property where the Showplace was has remained vacant and open land on
the shores of Walled Lake. 40 years have passed. Finally, a result of one man’s
passion for its history and legacy the city of Novi has officially designated it as a park.
There on the shores of Walled Lake are plans to permanently create another special
atmosphere. A place for today with prominent reminders of the historic significance of
the land and what happened there.
Now the Walled Lake Showplace returns. Reborn. This time on television.
The music, the sounds, the entertainers, and many of the people who came week after
week tell their stories, play the music, re-live it all again and relate the real story behind
its re-birth and death..
Interest in. and popularity of these entertainment giants, their music, and stories is
global in scope.
This production will, for the first time place all of it on an international stage.

A Word About the Woodward Dream Cruise
The Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing
about 1.5 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe. Muscle
cars, street rods, custom, collector and special interest vehicles dating across several
decades.
The majority of the cars on display are those that were available and prevalent during the 1950s,
60s and early 70s. However, the Woodward Dream Cruise also welcomes vehicles of all models
whose owners have either scrupulously maintained or customized their car to create a unique
vehicle or statement. During the post-war era, people would "cruise" in their cars along
Woodward Avenue, from drive-in to drive-in, often looking for peers or friends who were also
out for a drive, and perhaps seeking an opportunity for some street racing or at least a chance to
"burn rubber" (or "light 'em up") in a quick getaway from a newly green traffic light.[3]
Nelson House, a plumber from Ferndale, initiated the idea for the cruise in 1994 to help raise
money for a children's soccer field in his community]
Organizers initially expected 30,000 or 40,000 people to come to the August 19, 1995 inaugural
cruise on Woodward Avenue in Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge, Berkley, Huntington Woods, Royal
Oak and Birmingham. About 250,000 actually showed up.[3]
It is now the largest single day classic car event in the world, and brings in over $56 million
annually for the Metro Detroit economy.[4]

PARTS 1 & 2
EDITORIAL
If you‟re old enough to remember just how popular the Walled Lake Casino was then you‟ll
probably be thrilled to hear about Lee Alan‟s plans to revive the entertainment hot spot.
The former deejay / television producer has already earned the approval of Walled Lake
officials and made his pitch to Novi‟s Monday.
Right now, it sounds like a great idea - but more details are needed.
The 13-acre site is owned by the City of Novi, which bought it in the mid-1980s to rebuild
the 13 Mile and Old Novi roads intersection.
A lot has changed since Alan brought in the likes of the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder.
Like the fees those artists now charge, our population has also increased enormously.
Is this to be a one-time or annual event, or are the plans to rebuild the venue to its former
stature?
Who are the acts Alan is looking to present?
What kind of impact would this event have on Novi‟s Music & Motor Festival?
These are just some of the questions that need to be addressed. We like Alan‟s concept.
Let‟s move forward and see what challenges it presents and how to meet them.

Some four decades ago, dressed in a dark suit and black glasses straight from the set of
MIB, Lee Alan lured thousands of Detroit teens to the Walled Lake Casino with artists like
Chuck Berry and Stevie Wonder.
The glasses are gone and the hair‟s a little thinner, but Alan wants to do it all over again
Even though the casino burned to the ground Christmas Eve 1965 and the site today is a
Novi City Park. But this time he is producing it for national television.
Built in 1925, the sprawling wooden structure played hosts to performers like Artie Shaw,
Frank Sinatra and Lawrence Welk in the 1930s and „40s. By the late „50s the Big Band era
was over, tastes and times had changed and the casino closed and was sold in 1959.
In 1960 the new owners reopened the facility and brought in Alan to promote rock and roll
shows. “The first week we had 500, 600 people. We had 1,500 the second. Then there were
about 4,000 every show. After the fourth week ABC allowed me to broadcast my show from
there.”
Over the next five years the Walled Lake Casino held shows three to four times a week
drawing 3,000 to 4,000 people a show.
Local resident Carol Crawford, who went to the prom at the Walled Lake Casino in 1960,
said she‟s excited about the project.
According to Alan, about the only big names who didn‟t play the Walled Lake Casino in the
early „60s were the Beatles and Elvis. His live radio show, which followed American
Bandstand, helped make the area nationally known and introduced performers like Stevie
Wonder to the world.

The Detroit News
NOVI -- A five part national television series from
the mind of broadcast legend and television producer
Lee Alan is in the works.
Parts 1 & 2 of series will be woven around Michigan, Motown, and Walled Lake
Casino and the days when the casino -- a dance hall -- was a magnet for such big
names as Frank Sinatra, Detroiter Stevie Wonder and the Rolling Stones.
"The casino was known around the world," Alan said. "Recording artists and
entertainment people just packed that place weekend after weekend, year after
year."
Built in 1925, the casino hosted hundreds of the biggest entertainers in the world.
When the Big Band era died out in the late 1950s, the casino was closed and sold.
New owners reopened it in 1960 and hosted sock hops at the hall until 1965, when
it was shuttered for good.
The hall and the site of the former Walled Lake Amusement Park at the south end
of Walled Lake are now vacant and bear no resemblance to their historic past.
Several books about Alan and the Walled Lake Casino have already been
published, and Alan has published his own recollections in the book "Turn Your
Radio On".
