Introducion

Internaional Fashion Academy, beter known as IFA Paris, offers students undergraduate courses in design and markeing, and postgraduate courses in design, business, communicaion and luxury brand management in an environment of mulidisciplinary collaboraion. With schools in Paris and Shanghai, IFA Paris is at the forefront of fashion and luxury educaion and offers courses that reflect the breadth of opportuniies available in this vibrant industry.

The Bachelor course in Fashion Design & Technology was created with the vision that French fashion educaion needed to internaionalize to remain compeiive in the rapidly changing fashion industry by combining our French draping heritage with the modern globalized world of fashion design.

To succeed in today’s fashion world, designers need to do much more than competently sketch garments on sheets of paper. To achieve the goal of transmiing a broader range of competencies, IFA created its innovaive curriculum that addresses the needs of world-renowned fashion companies by bringing its students into a workshop environment from the first year. The course develops their creaivity while also teaching key technical skills needed to succeed in this compeiive industry.

Paris School

IFA Paris was established in 1982 to combine French fashion heritage with the modern globalized world. As the only school in Paris offering all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses taught in English, IFA Paris caters to a highly internaional student body from all corners of the world.

Recently relocated to 18-24 Quai de la Marne, IFA Paris overlooks the famous canal of “Ourcq”and is at the heart of the developing 19th arrondissement. The new locaion has trippled the size of the previous academic faciliies and added extensive new ameniies to benefit students, including bigger classrooms, a student lounge space, and a resource and study center. The building will also house several new fashion workshop spaces to accommodate hands-on projects.

This vibrant and arisic neighborhood is also home to many cultural landmarks, including the MK2 cinemas, Point Ephémère performance space for concerts and ballets, and le

CENTQUATRE art centre with a wide range of cultural offerings, exhibits and high-profile fashion shows. The district is also the locaion of other presigious schools devoted to creaive arts, including École Naionale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris-La Villete (ENSAPLV) and the Conservatoire Naional Supérieur de Musique, and is close to the École Internaionale de Créaion Audiovisuelle et de Réalisaion (EICAR). “The 19th” is emerging as one of the most exciing and simulaing area for students in all of Paris, and IFA Paris is excited to become a part of this neighborhood.

Shanghai School

Founded in Shanghai in 2002 in partnership with the Shanghai University of Engineering Sciences (SUES), IFA Paris is the first Sino-French joint-venture in fashion educaion and is today seen as the leading school in the fashion and luxury goods sectors in China. It is considered as one of the best performing schools in terms of combining teaching to creaivity and business sense. Its teachers, most of whom recruited globally, are all experienced professionals in the world of fashion.

Thanks to innovaive iniiaives and in partnership with the fashion and luxury goods and service industries, IFA Paris is also the only school in Shanghai to offer first and second cycle courses taught enirely in English.

The School is ideal for Chinese and internaional students with a global outlook, who wish to pursue careers in the fields of creaion, fashion, design, luxury and business management. It is also intended for those looking for sales and media posiions such as business managers or roles in large organizaions offering fashion or luxury goods and service.

Consequently, it remains the place where contemporary fashion designers including Marin Margiela, Rick Owens, and Alber Elbaz choose to live and work. In recent history, Paris has turned almost every part of its economy into luxury through fashion, jewelry, beauty care as well as gastronomy, wine and travel. Paris remains an essenial stop for young fashion and luxury professionals who wish to understand the cultural, industrial and market forces that shape the fashion world today.

Shanghai is an open and extroversive metropolis and its ascent into the ranks as a fashion capital is no doubt a serious topic. Since late 19th century, Shanghai has been the fashion center of China. The Shanghai style has travelled the world in the 1920s and 30s, and has recently re-emerged with fashion designers’ innovaive worksof fusion trends. Remarkably, it is the country’s consumers who are transforming today’s China into the world’s largest market of luxury and high-end fashion products. With internaional fashion and jewelry brands - from luxury to mass markets - forming the prosperous retailing scene in the city’s numerous fashion districts, Shanghai is unquesionably China’s Mecca for the fashion and luxury industry.

Teaching and Learning Methodology

research demands of their future workplaces. Students are encouraged to be flexible, resourceful, socially co-operaive and culturally aware of the relevance of global events and market trends. Tasks are set at levels of being achievable and saisfying at each stage, whilst demonstraing individual creaivity and capacity. In

pracice, there is a balance of direct class and face-to-face learning, guided study and personal study ime, together with expectaions for homework assignments.

For those students who do not ulimately wish to be designers, the skills and atributes developed on the program will equip them to take up a broad range of design careers, or to progress a specialism further by studying at postgraduate level.

IFA aims to provide a fully inclusive educaional experience for all students that prepares them for the possibility of an internaional fashion-related career and travel, and communicaion with others across cultural and language divides. All bachelor level classes are taught in English.

Students are primarily taught in workshops that simulate the working environments of Fashion industry design rooms and offices. Learning aciviies develop the process of reflecive learning and problem-solving and of paience in working across language barriers.

Curriculum

The course is organized around 3 Ateliers lasing each 30 academic weeks Each atelier encompasses specific module groupings structured around various themes.The 3 Ateliers correspond to the 3 levels idenified within the Higher Educaion Framework. The course is constructed in compliance with the Bologna Convenion principles and grant paricipants, upon compleion, a total of 180 ECTS (60 ECTS per Atelier or year).

The underlying raionale behind this course construcion is to allow students to be immersed in an environment that mimics what their working condiions will be like in a fashion studio. The assessment strategy uses a perfect balance between summaive and formaive assessments in order to improve skills not only on core disciplines but also in project planning and ime management. Projects are concurrently conducted between all modules in order to improve students’ transferrable skills, allowing them to link skills and competencies from various domains.

Deuxieme Atelier: ExperimentaionThe second atelier is conducted as the second year of the Bachelor Course. Under the Higher Educaion Programs

framework, the second atelier is equivalent to a HE Level 5. In this stage of their learning experience, students are

invited to develop their creaivity through experimentaion. Specific themes such as men’s wear, children’s wear or kniing workshop will be covered through interlinked module. The pedagogical objecive is to improve paricipants’ criical thinking.

Troisieme Atelier: ImprintThe third atelier is conducted as the third year of the Bachelor Course. Under the Higher Educaion Programs framework, the second atelier is equivalent to a HE Level 6. In the final process of their learning experience, students will focus on expressing their own voice as a designer. Through the development of a Mini-Collecion they will be asked to think in terms of personal creaivity, appropriate construcion techniques, contemporaneity and unique selling proposiion and posiioning. The final objecive here is to prepare a unique porfolio of garments to be used as stepping stone for job search within the industry or access to the Master Course at IFA called “Master of Arts in Contemporary Fashion Design”.

IFA Career and Alumni Center:The 3 Ateliers will be complemented on a yearly basis by 60 hours of industry relaions. Students will get the opportunity to atend special guest lectures given by industry professionals. Field trips to factories, studios and workshops will also complement the series of guest lectures. Through IFA Career and Alumni Center’s database, students will be able to be exposed to the latest and most current industry techniques while increasing their own professional network of contacts.

The third year collecion

The final stage of the course aims to consolidate, synthesize and extend students’ previous learning. They are supported in their negoiaion and proposal of a personal concept and its creaion to follow through a mini-collecion to a professional level of realizaion and presentaion. This will provide an opportunity for paricipants to demonstrate and confirm the evoluion of their unique strengths and their career aspiraions. The major final collecion project comprises disinct but interrelated units, each one represening a criical phase of the development process and each demanding its own paricular skills combined with creaively expressing students’ interests and taste.

Upon successful compleion of their personal collecion students will be able to plan, criically review, consolidate and extend a systemaic and coherent body of theoreical and pracical knowledge and design work. They will uilize specialized skills across a discipline; and apply diagnosic

As the strategic aspect of their markeing research is completed, students are invited to develop their own logo and implement the visual idenity through the creaion of a catalogue and a look-boo which gives them, in addiion with their porfolio, a complete array of documents allowing them to promote themselves professionally when graduaing.

The annual IFA Paris Graduaion Fashion Show is the pinnacle event for graduaing students to showcase what they have learned throughout their studies, and to reveal their intricate designs to fashion media and fashion company representaives. Ater innumerable hours of research, sketching and design, the best graduates will display their work on the runways of their own fashion show. Combining their imaginaion, industry trends, and guidance from IFA’s faculty, graduates demonstrate their readiness to transform their dreams into reality at IFA Paris’s Graduaion Fashion Show.

The world of fashion is always looking for fresh designers with original ideas. As a fashion school, IFA Paris coninues to grab headlines from different enterprises, luxury brands, famous designers and prominent media personaliies. Every year, hundreds of disinguished guests from the fashion industry and media atend IFA Paris’ Graduaion Fashion Show to find the next promising young designer who will work for their company, or to meet tomorrow’s rising star of the fashion world.

Faculty

Aleksandra OlenskaFollowing several years assising at Dazed & Confused magazine, Aleksandra Olenska honed her style on the MA at Central Saint Marins, whereupon her talent was immediately picked up by 10 Magazine, Italian Vogue, W and Self Service, among others. Her idiosyncraic approach has appeared on the catwalks for Clements Ribeiro, Peter Jensen and Roksanda Ilincic, just to name a few. She has created insillaions for SHOWstudio, a line for Topshop, and provided consultancy services for brands including Céline, Daks London, Pringle, Tom Ford and Vanessa Bruno.

Sophie DulaurentGraduated from LISAA and IFM Paris as a disincion student, Sophie Dulaurent coninued her fashion career with Peclers and Lidewij Edelkoort. She then worked for Balmain, Maje, Vanessa Bruno as stylist and trend analyst.

Irfan CheemaIrfan Cheema graduated from La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne and has been in the industry since 1999. He was menswear designer for ChenOne, brand manager and art director of Texilion, and a lecturer on patern making and draping in La Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

Lise Parmenier As a graduate of Studio Berçot, Lise Parmenier met the well-respected designer Veronique Leroy, and later became her business partner. Lise then spent six years working in the studio of Belgian designer Marin Margiela, and launched her own luxury womenswear brand.

Andreas GrimbergBorn in Germany, Andreas Grimberg came to China in 2005 and created fashion products for key European account fashion retailers like Kauhof, Karstadt, Metro, Takko, Kik, Orsay and Pimkie. He started a markeing consuling company in China, Parallel, to support Chinese fashion producers with European market-entry strategies. He also supported European fashion companies with sourcing, product-placement, supplier-controlling and QC aciviies in China.

Tanja WiednerTanja Wiedner graduated from ESMOD, Academie Internaional de Coupe de Paris, and University of Munich. She then worked for top fashion brands such as John Galliano, Zadig & Voltaire, Valenino, Karl Lagerfeld, and Chrisian Lacroix as patern designer. Before joining IFA Paris, Tanja was a patern design lecturer at Parsons.

Admission Requirements

• High school graduates or above • Above 18 years of age• A strong interest in fashion• As modules in Paris and Shanghai are taught in English, it is preferable to have the requisite language skills before commencing the course.

• When applying to our school in Paris, non-naive English speakers are required to provide an IELTS score. An overall score of 5.5 is preferred. • In Shanghai, students whose English proficiency is below par are required to atend addiional language classes.
