Women’s Committee Irene Morris, Liz Glass and Denise Ryan GAY PARI AT THE BYC FASHION SHOW - This year’s Fashion Show was held on Thursday, October 1, 2009. The evening was a huge success. The BYC raised $7,600.00 that will benefit the Carman Road School for the Physically Disabled in Massapequa and the Babylon Rotary Club, Clergy Cluster Food Panty. Irene Morris started the Fashion Show several years ago and we were happy to continue this wonderful event with her guidance. The success of the evening was due the dedicated and hardworking individuals on the Fashion Show Committee. Gina Capitano and Kelly Pape put on a fashion show to remember featuring fashions from Ooh La La, Pandemonium, Fitness Incentive, Bunger Surf Shop, Lacrosse Unlimited and Village Bridal. Our models and committee displayed make up and hair styles by The Make Up Studio New York, Posh, Village Salon and Spa and K’s Hair Design. Megan Kelly and Karen Gambino created a beautiful setting for our show that was spectacular. Beth Walters, Christine Lanza, Bonnie Rondinello and Dina Brandenstein collected and put together so many wonderful raffle baskets that were all donated by local businesses and individuals in our area. Donna Valenti donated the delicious truffles that were at each place setting. Gail walker sold over 150 tickets to the show. Jeanne Collins and Mary Grace Gleason did a wonderful job checking in and seating our guests. Kristine Calamari, Bernadette Broderick, Louise Guastella and Sue Greco sold over $4,000.00 in raffle tickets

and Joann O’Hara collected dollar bills from everyone for a 50/50 raffle. Nick Giampetro did a great job with the sound and music for the show. Yvonne Albanese put together a beautiful program for the evening, as well as all our advertisements. Barbara Schaefer and Katherine Fallon did a great job on the labels for the basket descriptions. Jason and Mike, the BYC Stewards,

Fashionistas Beth Walters and Liz Glass

were a huge help the entire night. Alice Rogers, Jennifer Rogers and Sharon Donnelly served a lovely spread of cheese, crackers and grapes for each table and concluded the evening with a delicious cake donated by Jacquelines’ Patisserie. Charlie Spencer from the Babylon Rotary Club shared information with us regarding the food pantries in our area and Maria Parascandola

shared information with us about her son Devon, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy and all of the amazing benefits that her son’s school provides for children with disabilities. Thank you to everyone who participated - the Fashion Committee, all the local merchants, the models, the stores that provided the fashions, the studios that provided us with makeup and hair styles and of course, all of the wonderful people who attended our show and gave generously. If you did not attend the show but would like to make a donation, you can do so by calling Liz Glass at 321-4145 or Irene Morris at 661-5133. The Makeup Studio New York was kind enough to give us coupons for $20 off your first services at Village Bridal, Village Salon and Dynasty Limo. We still have some left. Anyone interested, please call Liz Glass at 321-4145. See you next year!

Entertainment Doug Williamson, Ralph Benzakein and Rod Bisson MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - Monday Night Football attendance has been strong! It has been regularly in the high 20’s peaking to about 50 for

the last Monday’s game with the Jets playing Miami. Week 2: Colts vs. Dolphins. We were treated to beef teriyaki and rice made by Bernadette Broderick.

Week 3: Panthers vs. Cowboys. We were treated to Bernadette’s cooking again with homemade chili and cornbread which was supplemented with some of the leftovers from the Irish party.

Week 4: Packers vs. Vikings. We were taken down to the bayou by Alyssa Van Bourgondien’s BBQ’d Chicken, Jambalaya, and spicy dirty rice.

Week 5: This was a big one as Jets and Miami fans abound, but we had enough food to go around with a joint effort from Jim Miraval with his baked ham and pea soup complimented by Bill Hueber’s hot wings and topped off with “Heart Attack Potatoes” by Alyssa Van Bourgondien. SEPTEMBER 29TH

Special team players from Sequams West were Andrew & Allison Capone. Members were treated to Pierogies, sausages, penne a la vodka, chicken wings, nachos, two different kinds of chili and lots more. Some great desserts were also served before time ran out. The delicious fare had guests hoping for overtime. Can’t wait till next season! OCTOBER 7TH HAPPY HOUR – The October 7th Happy Hour rounded out the season with a Cuban menu provided by hosts Carl and Sandy Galian. Carl and Sandy's very capable crew included Billy & Michelle Kern, Jimmy & Debbie Woltmann, Barbara Schaefer and Sandralee Capitain. 75 happy BYC members enjoyed the Galian's homemade crabcakes, skirt steak, Cuban pork, black beans and rice, key lime shrimp, gazpacho and other treats. - BYC COOKING COMPETITION – The BYC held its first cooking competition on Sunday, October 11th. If you missed it, you’ve probably already heard that you should mark your calendar for next year’s event. Seven teams of contestants wowed the crowd with tasty samplings of cream of mushroom soup, rice balls, chicken cordon-bleu, moussaka, short ribs, mushroom lasagna, tiramisu, pear crisp and other delicious morsels too numerous to mention here. Tables were creatively and stylishly decorated with themes varying from Traditional French Elegance

to satirical P.E.T.A. (People Eating Tasty Animals). Judging was conducted upstairs by a team of chefs headed by our own John (Monty) Montgomery. Awards were presented in several categories, but the judges overall favorite was the Capone/Kennedy team. The People’s Choice Award went to Kelly/Ryan team.

Special thanks go to Monty of Sea Levels Restaurant in Brightwaters, who, along with his judging expertise, provided a selection of wines for our members to sample. You can judge Monty’s talents at his restaurant Tuesday through Saturday with live entertainment on the weekends. Sea Levels also holds monthly cooking classes for aspiring contestants (or just for fun). For more information, visit www.sealevelsrestaurant.com or call 631-665-8300.

Plenty of work went into making this first ever BYC event a big success. Leslie Brophy conceived, proposed and executed her plan to perfection. We are all grateful (and well-fed) for her hard work. APPRECIATION PARTY – Your Board of Governors went to town with a lovely beefsteak dinner in appreciation of our members who volunteered over the season. There was no shortage of delicious

appetizers. These included pesto pizza, boneless chicken wings, brie in phyllo cups, Trudi’s chowder and more. Dinner was delicious steak, BYC Au gratin potatoes, carrots, salad and dinner rolls. Desserts abounded!! Chocolate covered Oreos, homemade chocolate chip cookes, brownies, apple cake, bundt cake, pecan bars…..Mmm. Everyone enjoyed the evening and everyone was well fed! The highlight of the evening was Kevin and Kathy O’Brien receiving the BYC Family of the Year award. Kevin and Kathy have true BYC spirit and have gone above and beyond helping out at the Club. Congratulations!

From the Secretary Barbara Schaefer The Annual Meeting was held on October 14th. There was a good turnout which was nice to see. Thank you to all who came. Each Committee Chair gave a report for the year. The 2010 Slate for the Board of Governors was approved. Eight members were nominated to be on the Nominating Committee. A vote was taken and the Nominating Committee for 2010 was elected as follows:

Greg Aitken Jerry Dunnells Aileen Eppig Dave Hyer Larry Schaefer

Regatta Marty O’Connell and Tom McGowan The Regatta desk has been pretty busy wrapping up another very successful sailing season. The BYC Men’s and Woman’s Championship race went off on an overcast, occasionally rainy, occasionally breezy Saturday. Racing started at 10:30 and lasted until 5:30. In all 9 teams participated and 12 races were held. Although it was a long day, it was a lot of fun too - many laughs were had while some serious racing was done. Since the Flying Scots used were supplied by the Club, to keep it fair the race was designated as a

round-robin event; whereby each crew changes boats after each race. To facilitate the boat changing, we towed one of the floating docks out on the bay and anchored it. At one time, during a flight change, there were nearly 15 sailors on the float - what a sight it was! Congratulations to the winning teams who will represent the BYC at the GSBYRA bay championship in the spring. The Woman Champions: Lindsay Brink, Daisy Holzmacher & Christine Mulle. For the Men’s: Dave Hyer (lite), Commodore Ken Goodwin & Matt Brink. Thanks to Larry Schaefer, Joe Mulle, Pete Capitan, Dave Hyer (classic), Carl Galian, Rich Tesoro and everyone else who pitched in to make this a successful event.

The final wrap-up event of the season was the Louis H. Orr Invitational Race and what a way to finish up a season. The near summer like day with blue skies and friendly winds made for a delightful afternoon jaunt around bay. During the race, Callie O’Connell captained There n’ Back and escorted a photographer from lisail.com around the course where he had taken many shots of the fleet on different points of sail. The race will be featured in an upcoming issue of this online publication so keep a lookout at http://lisail.com. If you register (it’s free, takes a couple of minutes and an email address), you’ll receive a notification

when new issues are posted. In all, twenty four boats showed up for the event which was followed by a well attended reception and awards ceremony. Fittingly, the awards were presented by Libby Orr and her son Nick. The winner for the spin division: Kevin Padden (SBCC) on Rettsie and for the non-spin: Jerry Dunnells (BYC) on Chanson. Special thanks to the Race committee: Joe Mulle and Pete Capitain, who picked two great courses for the two fleets. To Chris Sicignano for loaning Sybaris for Committee Duty. To the reception volunteers and food preparers: Marceil O’Connell, Deb Goodwin, Kathy Farrell, Sandralee Capitain, Christine Mulle, Barbara Schaefer, Patrick O’Connell and the ‘Chili Guy’ Jerry Dunnells. Speaking of Jerry… The BYC Corinthian series also concluded and Jerry Dunnells on Chanson will once again reign as ‘Corinthian King’. Commodore Ken on Intrepid landed a 2nd for the series followed by Harry Manko on Full Circle.

In closing, I’d like to share a tidbit from the Regatta report given at the Annual meeting.

This year the BYC Regatta had set up 90 starting lines that were crossed by 221 boats carrying over 550 sailors.

It is satisfying to look at these numbers and know the BYC Regatta program is alive and well and making significant contributions in facilitating events for its members and the bay community as well.

Co Chairs Report Joe Mullé “A lesson learned” – Earlier in September we decided to race Wild Blue II in the Commodore’s Cup. While gearing up we invited the Galian family to race with us. We were a few feet away from the dock when we heard this grinding noise. We forgot a line to the dock…. I attempted to release the winch & cleat but the tension was too much and into the briny deep the winch went. Now with any 46 year old boat parts are not easy to come by so we grabbed a few poles & nets and tried to locate the elusive part. A support team developed on the dock suggesting where it might be and after numerous tries we felt we had narrowed the search area. Carl volunteered to go in the water and try to find the winch. The first dive was unsuccessful, but on the second he found one winch and base! The winch was reinstalled the next day, ready to go. Besides a healthy dose of humility, the lesson learned was “You are never in too big a rush to untie the boat.” A few boatyard updates: I would like to thank everyone for their patience and flexibility as we attempted to keep the yard organized this year. With the season winding down please make arrangements to remove your boat from the boatyard no later than the weekend of Nov 14th. Doing so really does help us in getting the BYC fleet stored for the off season. You may have noticed an increase of sailboats in the boatyard and out on the water off the Club a few weeks ago; LISOT, a north shore junior sailing organization, asked to use our facilities to get their sailors acclimated to local conditions for the Mid-Atlantic 420 Championships held at Sayville Yacht Club October 11-13. Over two weekends they were down at the BYC early in the morning and sailed well into the late afternoon, relishing the breeze we take for granted.
