The search for the most adorable tot lasted two weeks in April and saw thousands of entries from proud parents across the country who were all keen to see their little one fronting Asda’s in-store and online advertising during our two week baby and toddler event.

Our baby and toddler events, which run four times a year, see hundreds of products reduced to fantastic value prices. From the six thousand entries, ten were shortlisted and all won £50 of Asda vouchers.

After much deliberation by judges however, the winning baby was named as six month old Cody Robertson from Glasgow. Cody was fl own to London in May for an all expenses paid photo shoot with a top celebrity photographer. He also won a £1,200 contribution to his Child Trust Fund whilst his proud mum Charlene won a £250 George shopping spree, a month’s supply of Asda shopping and an all day pampering session at the top, luxurious getaway retreat - Nirvana Spa.

Cody will be seen by over 18 million shoppers who visit Asda each week, when the campaign he is fronting will be unveiled at the beginning of our Baby and Toddler Event in October.

Earlier this year, we at Asda launched a nationwide search in partnership with the Daily Mirror to fi nd the country’s most beautiful baby, to become the face of our in-store October advertising campaign.

Bonding

8 ASDA Baby OCTOBER 2010

From the minute they are born, your baby is already amazing. Babies are born to be sociable but they need your help from their very fi rst day to develop their social skills.

Babies’ brains have a huge capacity for learning and most brain development happens before the age of three. This is the crucial time to help your child learn to communicate.

Sharing books is a wonderful way to help your child learn to talk and develop, and it’s the ideal opportunity to bond with your child and share a cuddle at the same time!

ENJOYReading

• Find a quiet place. Turn off the TV or radio so there are no distractions

• As well as reading the story, talk about the pictures. If there’s a picture of a dog, talk about a dog that you know

• Give your child time to respond to your chatter

• Don’t put any pressure on your child to name the pictures, but if they copy your words, praise them and repeat the words again

• • Don’t read for too long. Young children get bored quickly,

so little and often is best

• Let other grown-ups – grandparents, carers and older brothers and sisters – join in too

• It’s good to share favourite books again and again. Repetition helps children to understand and remember

the language they hear

• For more tips and advice visit www.readingforlife.org.uk

Pampers UNICEF This year, Pampers and UNICEF are celebrating half a decade of providing life-saving tetanus vaccines to vulnerable women and their newborn babies around the world. Since the start of the campaign, thanks to the help of mums and dads, Pampers has helped protect the lives of 100 million women and their babies in 21 countries across two continents from maternal and newborn tetanus.

Always put your baby to sleep on their back in the feet to foot position, with no loose bedding, no pillow and no stuffed toys.

Fourteen countries are now reaching completion of their maternal and newborn tetanus programmes. But even with the huge amount of progress already made, there’s still a great deal of

work to be done to help Pampers and

UNICEF reach their goal of

eliminating the disease from every corner of the world.

Fortunately, it’s so easy for Asda customers to help. From October to December, every Pampers product you buy with the ‘1 pack = 1 life-saving vaccine’ logo, means Pampers will provide

The 170 million women and their babies still at risk from maternal and newborn tetanus are some

of the most under-privileged populations living in the most rural areas of the poorest countries in the world. Without UNICEF’s help, they have little or no access to quality healthcare. The disease continues to needlessly claim the life of a newborn every nine minutes,

however is easily preventable through a simple vaccine programme given during pregnancy,

to protect both mother and unborn child through this vulnerable period

protecting the mother for three years and the baby for

two months.

AT RISKAT RISK

UNICEF with the cost of one tetanus vaccine.

In addition, this year also sees the launch of the ‘Pampers Big Kiss’ campaign supported by Pampers Village Parenting Panel celebrity mum Melanie C. Over the last fi ve years, mums and dads in the

UK have done an amazing job

raising funds for the life-saving

tetanus vaccines. Now through the

Pampers Big Kiss campaign, everyone

can be part of the global movement to help eliminate maternal and newborn

tetanus. By simply visiting the Pampers Village website www.pampers.co.uk/bigkiss you can send a ‘virtual kiss’ with the click of a mouse. And for every virtual kiss sent, Pampers will make an additional donation to UNICEF.

So now when you kiss your baby goodnight

in a Pampers nappy, you know you’ll be sending your love further by helping Pampers and UNICEF work towards eliminating maternal and newborn tetanus.

You can also help by telling other mums about the ‘Pampers Big Kiss’ campaign on facebook.

Take it smoothlyAs well as gentle tastes, your baby’s fi rst weaning foods will need to be smooth in texture. Remember, they’ve only ever had milk up until now, so they’re going to need to learn how to swallow solid foods.

Once your baby is enjoying their very fi rst taste of solids, you could try any of Cow & Gate’s Baby Balance range, made for this early stage of weaning. You could start their day with a Cow & Gate baby cereal – unlike many family cereals, they have no added salt or sugar and each serving provides 1/3 of your baby’s key daily vitamins.

A HEALTHY START TO YOURBaby’s Weaning Journey

Your baby’s fi rst tastesAt the very start, your baby’s fi rst weaning foods should be simple and gentle in fl avour. Many mums start off with baby rice, like Cow & Gate pure baby rice, made up with their usual milk. This helps to introduce your baby to a subtle new texture with a familiar taste, making it less strange for them to eat.

Pureed sweet fruits and vegetables like pear, sweet potato or butternut squash are also great fi rst weaning foods as babies are born with a natural preference for sweet tastes.

Feeding Feeding

Weaning is an exciting time for both you and your baby. Together, you’ll explore a whole new world of taste and texture, some of which your baby will love, and some of which will end up on the kitchen fl oor!

Variety is the spice of life! When it comes to weaning, it’s especially important to try and introduce your baby to a wide variety of foods during their fi rst 12 months, as this is when their food preferences are being formed. Different foods also contain different nutrients, so ensuring your baby eats a wide variety of food from breakfast through to dinner will help give them a healthy, balanced diet.

Cow & Gate’s range of jar meals contain more vegetables than any other baby food range and have absolutely no artifi cial fl avourings, colourings or preservatives, so you can be sure they’re tasty and full of the nutrients your baby needs to help them grow up happy and healthy.

If you’d like some ideas on varied recipes for your baby, our handy interactive meal planner on cowandgate.co.uk has plenty of inspiration.

At the end of the day, weaning your baby is something that can’t be done in a hurry – it can be a very gradual and messy process, so be patient and have fun!

CORE MUMCoreMum is part of the Corewellness programme, supported by TENA which is designed to support your health and wellbeing. Kari Bø, a world expert on core muscle fi tness, has developed the programme which features exercises to improve the body’s core muscles with particular emphasis on strengthening the pelvic fl oor and abdominals that can be weakened as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. This is very common and can be treated or even avoided with the specially designed exercises within CoreMum.

At all times, but even more so during pregnancy, our core muscles are important for posture and movement. They hold our internal organs in place and help to stabilise the spine. They include the respiratory diaphragm, the abdominal muscles, the muscles of the spine and the pelvic fl oor.

Pelvic fl oor muscles can be weakened as a result of pregnancy and childbirth. Bladder weakness is a common side effect of this and up to a third of women may experience this during pregnancy and after childbirth.

Although leading experts recommend women start exercising their pelvic fl oor and core muscles before they even become pregnant, it’s

often not until an anti-natal class that women are reminded of their importance.

Whether you are expecting your fi rst baby or have given birth before, there are simple exercises to suit each stage.

The benefi ts of the CoreMum Pelvicore Technique

After just a few weeks of regular training you can expect:

•Firmer tummy

•Better overall core strength

• Improved posture, movement and control

• Reduction and prevention of back and other joint pain

• Can enhance sexual comfort and pleasure

• Prevention of bladder weakness

?WHAT IS

You can download CoreMum at www.changestomybody.co.uk

Should I consult my doctor before I start the programme? The exercises have been specifi cally created for mums and mums-to-be, so if your overall health is good then there is no reason why you should need to consult your doctor. However, if you have any concerns or questions, do speak to your doctor first. The programme is designed to suit all stages of pregnancy and post natal.

Can anyone benefi t from the programme?Yes, anyone can benefi t from the Pelvicore Technique. The exercises featured in CoreMum are of particular use to pregnant women or those recovering from childbirth. However, the CoreWellness programme, which also focuses on strengthening the pelvic fl oor, abdominal and back muscles through the exercises is suitable for all.

Children’s mouths change as they grow. And at each stage of their development, they may need a different toothpaste and

toothbrush to match their ever-changing needs. With a different set of products for each phase of

the child’s dental development, Aquafresh is there every step of the way. The product range is divided into three age

groups; Milk teeth (0-3 years), Little Teeth (4-6 years) and Big Teeth (6+ years).

The very youngest mouths need a brush with soft bristles and a fl exible neck. Aquafresh Milk Teeth toothpaste has the lowest fl uoride content in our range.

Aquafresh Little Toothbrush has soft bristles like the Milk Teeth toothbrush. Aquafresh Little toothpaste provides gentle tooth care and strengthens enamel.

Big Teeth is especially for children aged 6 years plus to strengthen teeth, freshen breath and protect teeth, gaps and gums.

You may fi nd it diffi cult to get your children to brush their teeth properly and you would certainly not be alone1.

As medical concern over children’s poor dental care mounts2, it is vital that children are educated on good oral hygiene from an early age. “Many of the teeth and gum problems that I see in my clinic stem from poor oral hygiene behaviours that have developed since childhood. I would encourage all parents to educate their children early, on an oral care regime that includes brushing and rinsing with a mouthwash”, says Dr Anthony Zybutz of BDS of 39 Harley Street dental clinic.

LISTERINE® Smart Rinse, the mouthwash specifi cally designed for children, contains fl uoride, which is proven to strengthen teeth and reduce cavities by up to 40% more than brushing alone. LISTERINE® Smart Rinse reaches the whole mouth – teeth, tongue and gums – to get to those hard-to-reach areas that kids sometimes miss when brushing. In fact, the sugar-free and alcohol-free formula attracts and tints the bits that brushing leaves behind, so children can see the proof of a cleaner mouth in the sink.

LISTERINE® Smart Rinse comes in two child-friendly fl avours, Mild Mint and Mild Berry and is available at most Asda stores.

Inspired by mums, cooked by Heinz Parents are experts in what babies enjoy – that’s why Heinz continuously develops the Mum’s Own Recipe range inspired by the delicious ideas that you send to us. Our chefs and nutritionists tailor your favourites, turning them into ready-prepared meals that help babies develop their skills in eating solid foods. Heinz Mum’s Own Recipe savoury meals are the only ready-prepared weaning foods that are carefully developed to ensure that every jar contains a source of iron. It’s essential for babies over 6 months of age to eat iron-rich foods regularly, to ensure their natural iron stores don’t get too low.

First tastes, new fl avoursDeveloping your baby’s taste buds is important during the fi rst year of eating. Between 2 and 8 years of age many children don’t like to try new

foods, so it is good to give your baby a wide range of tasty meals while you are weaning. Heinz tries to make this little adventure a bit easier, and a bit more fun, by creating recipes with a variety of ingredients that provide everything from simple fi rst tastes to traditional favourites – and some different taste sensations for when they’re a little older. For example:

• Sweet Potato with Carrot was developed from a recipe that Heather created as a ‘fi rst taste’ for baby Ross

• Caribbean Pork Casserole was inspired by Michéle, who makes it for her baby

Perfect textures At Heinz, we understand that learning to chew and cope with different food textures are other big parts of the weaning adventure. The journey – from getting used to simple purées to eating a whole pea or a piece of pasta – takes a long time. That’s

Available in Original, Reduced Sugar, Wholemeal and Reduced Sugar Banana varieties, all the Heinz Farley’s Rusks provide a good source of iron and calcium, and contain 5 added vitamins, with no artifi cial colours or preservatives.

Heinz Farley’s Rusks can be mixed with your baby’s usual milk or previously boiled water. You can also add fruits, vegetables and other ingredients to create new taste adventures.

why Heinz takes texture very seriously, across every weaning stage.

• Extra-smooth purees make up all the Heinz fi rst-stage recipes. Until now your baby has only been eating milk, so ‘solids’ are a whole new experience!

• Perfectly mashed textures in the Heinz 7 months+ savoury recipes contain lumps that are soft, small and manageable for your baby to mash easily with their tongue – a very important stage in weaning

• Carefully selected chunky pasta and bigger vegetable pieces in the Heinz 10 months+ recipes are perfectly tender – and just the right size for babies learning to chew

We take lots of care to ensure the tasty recipes we get from mums are tailored to be the best texture for baby and their growing needs at each stage of their development.

Visit our website www.heinzbaby.co.uk to register for the Heinz Baby Club and receive plenty of free samples, vouchers and coupons – as well as nutritional advice and information, from pregnancy through to your baby’s fi rst birthday.

By introducing a wide range of tastes and textures at the right time in your baby’s development, you are helping them to become a happy and confi dent eater.
